Gwyneth Paltrow in Prada, in Venice: lovely, elegant or tragic?

Gwyneth Paltrow was all over Venice this weekend for the film festival’s premiere of Contagion, that Soderbergh movie where she dies like ten minutes into the film. Matt Damon and his wife were there too, but this is the Gwyneth-centric post, because there’s lots to talk about it.

Let’s do fashion first. For both the Contagion photo call and premiere, Gwyneth wore Prada. The orange dress (for the photo call) is kind of meh to me – I don’t like Goop in orange, it makes her skin look weird. I also find the faux-cap sleeves, with the weird draping, rather ugly. It makes her look like she has hunched shoulders, which isn’t good for Gwyneth’s naturally slouchy posture. That being said, her body looks great. I think her legs look particularly sexy, and I usually don’t use the word “sexy” for Dame Goop.

The Prada gown for the premiere was this weird condom dress with the overly-large back bow, all in this pale pink-nude color. It could have washed Gwyneth out, but I kind of like the color on her, but I’m meh on the design. Maybe if it didn’t have the mock turtle? Maybe if the darting on the bodice was done better?

I will give Goop credit for some things though – her hair and face look better than they’ve looked in months. She’s not puffy and waxy, her skin looks healthy and natural. And her blonde looks good too – bitch got her roots done for the film festival, and she’s softened her blonde with some rich-looking low and highlights.

    Orange dress: wear.a.BRA!

  2. mannequin says:

Ugh and Ick. I have yet to see Gwyneth in anything flattering. She always looks uncomfortable and stiff, like she can’t wait to get home and undress.

  3. Spiffy says:

Would have liked the ‘condom’dress much more if it wasn’t for the lowered waistline and the seams that point us directly to her boobs.

But it is much better than her orange binbag with random sleeveholes.

  4. Monie says:

That orange dress was a nice try but it makes her boobs look like they are resting by her armpits. Is she wearing Leanne’s bolt-ons for the event? lol

  5. lisa says:

I think the dress is too light in color for her skin. There is no POP. it fits well on her though
her dress scream.. I AM THE STAR of the movie or the woman on the arm of the Star of the movie..

It reminds me of that dress Nicole Kidman wore years ago.. I think in red with a similar bow but on the side not the back.

The orange dress is NO WORDS

  6. Rita says:

The organge dress is unremarkable but the frontal shot of the Prada from the waist up is Goop at her best. The bling, the hair, the makeup,….perfect. Exactly what red carpet-lovely should be.

However, the mid-drift is wtf and that bow is WTF!!

  7. ladyanne says:

Good Lord, what is that orange dress doing to her boobs ?

  8. Jenny says:

Her face looks good in the evening photo. Wonder why her hair is two differnt colors (the bottom is alot darker than the top)–extensions gone wrong? The evening dress would look better without the second seam right across her rear end. Without it, that dress would not be so bad (except from the side, it needs to extend further back in the boob area). The orange one, well, no comment.

  9. Quest says:

I love Prada but Goopy not helping that dress…it looks bad ill fitting, the boobs looking sad

  10. Super says:

In the last picture she looks almost exactly like Blake Lively! Am I the only one to see the resemblance? I like the pale pink dress though, just not on her 😛

  11. Super says:

    sorry double post 😐

  12. the original bellaluna says:

WTF? It looks like she threw on an orange sheet, belted it (really? is it Halloween already?,) and “finished” the shoulder area with paperclips.

And that big bow is ridiculous.

  13. constance says:

She’s a pumpkin! No, she’s a dish soap bottle doll!

I don’t think either dress was flattering at all. Oh, Goopy.

  14. yt says:

Although I don’t pay that much attention to Gwyneth Paltrow, I have noticed over the years that she has worn many unflattering dresses to red-carpet events. I must’ve missed the flattering ones. These two dresses do nothing for her.

  15. Cheyenne says:

    Both dresses are hideous.

    Great legs, though.

  16. jinni says:

Don’t understand why she keeps wearing dresses that make her breasts look like they hang super low. Is this really the look she wants?

  17. Cleo says:

Man, it’s too bad she doesn’t have enough time. I’d send her across Europe especially Germany and just rampage her blondeness all over the Haters til they exploded in flames from jealousy.

She is VERY blonde and VERY tall and very Silver Spoony and she’s JOOOISH!!!!!

  18. Juliet says:

The dresses do nothing for her breasts which are small enough and near nonexistent as it is.

  19. Sinder says:

She is rather plain. Her legs do look good! Whatever she is doing works!

  20. lucky says:

    what does that mean cleo?

  21. Trillion says:

I hate that “I have to pee sooo bad” pose that we see so many celebs use on the RC (as in the top shot).

  22. bagladey says:

    Both dresses suck.

  23. Hellen says:

@Rita: “the frontal shot of the Prada from the waist up is Goop at her best.”

Exactly. She looked fabulous, and I was impressed! But then I saw the bottom half (and the back) of this dress and screamed.

That orange Hefty Bag was heinous. There was nothing good about that AT ALL.

  24. blonde on the dock says:

I don’t like either dress but she is beautiful.

  25. original kate says:

no pasty white woman (including me) should ever wear that orange/coral color. no.

as for the pink dress…oh dear. when you have a long, rectangular torso a la goop, do NOT wear a dress with an unflattering seam across the hips. also, she needs a bra or at least petals – i do not need to see the goop nips with my morning coffeee, thanks.

  26. Alix says:

Did she lose a bet? That orange sack makes it look like her boobs are handing down around her waist.

  27. Elj says:

I BEG of this woman to change her hair. Or just stop going out in public.

  28. dear kaiser says:

And still, she refuses to up her eyebrow game! Forever Plain Jane Paltrow.

  29. salma says:

TRAGIC. I cant determine whether she wore it to match with her freckles or her tan. Although, freckles are cute 🙂

  30. Jayna says:

The dress shape is horrible and sleeves ugh. BUT her legs are beyond stunning. Her tan is perfect. The black belt was great against the vibrant orange and great length, just awful awful shape to it. Love love her shoes. Her face looks beautiful and her hair color.

The second gown she looks elegant but dress a little too pale.

  31. april says:

The orange is revolting. The pink is pretty but she doesn’t look good going braless.

  32. cailinos says:

Big thing in my opinion is her not wearing those godawful cow-hoof shoes/sandals she’s been lately addicted to. What a ghastly fashion!
(I feel minis are inelegant on grown women meself, but Lordy her legs are stunning.)

  33. fallen says:

Man can you say saggy boobs?!

  34. corey says:

*sigh* I wish I was in Venice wearing Prada right now….I love both dresses. They’re elegantly offbeat, but offbeat on purpose so its good (that didn’t make sense,oh well) and she’s just glowing in that orange dress.

  35. fabis says:

In my opinion, she’s so ugly, I don’t like her and she looks in the pale pink dress without weist. horrible !!

  36. Jackson says:

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Second gown is nice from the front but not loving that big bow in the back.

  37. Madison says:

The prada orange dress is awful, Goop looks better in the pink prada it’s better, but not by much.

  38. Kelly says:

    Both outfits are tragic

  39. smh says:

I’m assuming she really likes to envision herself as a real-life Barbie. Her lifestyle blog, perfect decoration obsessions, trying hard to look like the perfect mother, the eternally-slim blonde, the successful actress, and now the below outfit. She also seems like a really insecure person, because contrary to what some believe, children growing up in very protective environments grow up socially awkward and shy. She never really would have achieved all this if it wasn’t for her family and deep down she knows it. So she has to reassure herself with the whole image thing i imagine she spends more time thinking of that than her children. remember how she always hunched and looked insecure in the 90’s? and now she reads the opinions of people online and she sounds really hurt that most of us plebs do not like her. that is why in so many interviews she goes like: “i know many people don’t like me but i care not, the opinions of only the rich and elite matter”. the only thing she is really saying here, is how it gets to her when people do not like her. she really thought she would find the adulation she seeks through that blog and all and it’s been the opposite, she also sounds very lonely when she seeks for approval all the time. yeah she has her kids but they’re little and not the companion she seeks. her husband is rumoured to cheat on her, even separated secretly and he’s a douche who didn’t marry her till the last minute (she got pregnant to bag him because she wanted this ideal married life) anyway, it’s plenty fun to speculate on why she does the stupid things she does. ta for now lol

  40. TxGal says:

The orange dress looks more like a potato sack and the pink dress not sure what to think about that one. I also can’t stand the Goop.

  41. L says:

    Unfortunate

  42. Grace says:

Tragic. The top part of the orange dress seems to be made for a bigger bust to fill it out. I actually like the sleeves though.

  43. velourazure says:

yuck to all of it. how can someone who works out so much wear such ill-fitting clothing?

  44. Statler says:

I just want to know how many other people think of Creed from The Office when they see these pics like these.

  45. Vesper says:

I don’t understand, she used to have such good taste when she was younger. The orange dress is horrific as is the belt. I do like the pink dress, but only above the waist.

I don’t think her body is that great considering how much she says she works out. Her waist is thick, and her arms could be more toned. U would think someone who is in shape could at least stand straight. The elbows are nasty, so knarly.

  46. Vesper says:

Re. the orange dress. Are her breasts really sagging or is it just that the bust of the dress is much too big? It doesn’t really look like she is endowed enough to fill out the dress. She had the same problem with the pink princess dress that she wore when she won an oscar.

  47. Suzie says:

I always think that shade of orange all on its own looks like a uniform’s colour, perhaps a prison inmate uniform colour or fireman’s uniform colour. The dress definitely makes her look round shouldered from the front.

  48. Blithe says:

I think the orange color on her is really flattering, but why oh why would you ever intentionally pick out a dress that makes your chest look lopsided (“loppy”) and saggy?!?!? The pink dress is a big fat “meh”.

  49. HotLatino says:

I love her tanned skin, woah, she should tan more often, pale skin is a no no, anyways, I love her hair and she looks great!

  50. ShanKat says:

Great about her only being in 10 minutes of the movie, though. I’d consider seeing it for that (and, of course, The Damonness of it all).

I think the coral color works on her, but the wonk-boob is serious, and the terrible sleeves and cheap-looking belt only emphasize the badness in the bra-al area.

The pink bow number would make a great top. It’s tragic from the waist down. But it’d be hot with a pair of cigarette pants.

I hate her hair. She looks like Cindy McCain. Serious Senator’s Wife hair.

  51. Green_Eyes says:

What happened to the days where she dressed the part of Hollywood royalty or like she even gave a damn?? Get rid of the stylist cuz if ya have one …. He/she has no “style” when it comes to you GOOP!

  52. Jenny says:

Just saw some after festival photos, and her hair is much shorter. Someone should tell her that when you get extensions, they should match the hair. She can afford better I would think.

  53. Sheigh says:

Is Lawrence Fishburne behind Gwynnie with the unflattering purple Booboo?
Anyway, I think the salmon dress will look better on her daughter and the orange’s on Janice Dickinson!

  54. Annaloo says:

Gwyneth Quasimodo… That dress really brings out the hunchback effect. How she’s crooking her slender legs for shots doesn’t help.

  55. Judy says:

    Beyond tragic…and I can’t stand this bitch.

  56. Az says:

She really needs a bra. She usually looks saggy but that orange dress makes it worse. And the blush dress looks like my high school graduation dress circa 1987, except even back then I knew better than to throw on a huge fug bow.

  57. LunaT says:

Thumbs down on both. Just b/c something is spendy and made by a certain designer doesn’t mean it’s gonna look good on anyone.

  58. anne_000 says:

orange dress = halloween pumpkin dress. something that princesses eugenie & beatrice would wear.

pink dress = i don’t like how it’s broken up into 3 sections.

  59. Ms.JAPrufrock says:

Goop’s personality and style is as bland and paltry as you can get. Brando once said that the only thing an actor owes his public is not to bore them. Goop fails in this respect.

  60. smh says:

why, she doesn’t bore me at all, on the contrary i find her very amusing and entertaining… bwahaha

  61. lucy2 says:

    Yuck to both.
