These are some photos from Friday night’s NAACP Image Awards in LA – you can read the full winners list here. Viola Davis won Best Actress for Won’t Back Down and Denzel Washington won Best Actor for Flight. Halle Berry was up for Best Actress (for Cloud Atlas) but she lost, obviously, and so she maybe looked kind of foolish in retrospect dominating the red carpet the way she did. Halle did look great though – she wore this beautiful Vivienne Westwood gown which makes her body and skin look amazing. Note: she’s wearing her engagement ring. God, that thing is so ugly, right?
I’m not sure who Joy Connor is, but OMG THIS DRESS. She looks like she mauled a Muppet and then wore its carcass.
Alfre Woodard looks fantastic! That color is beautiful on her, and her hair looks spectacular.
Freida Pinto looks fantastic in this James Ferreira gown. Should I consider this dress Grecian-inspired or sari-inspired? Great color on her.
Sandra Oh – pretty color on her, but the overall effect is meh.
I don’t love anything about Kerry Washington’s Oscar de la Renta look. First, the hair is too severe. I think she regrets a bad bangs choice and she’s trying to grow them out, but this is not the way to make it work. As for the dress… it just doesn’t look… right? Like, it’s two ugly dresses put together to make something super-fug. But! Kerry was a big winner last night – she won awards for Django Unchained, Scandal, and a public service award.
I love Archie Panjabi so, so much but I’ve gotten to the point where I can admit to myself (and all of you) that she always looks far better on The Good Wife than she ever looks on the red carpet. The stylists at The Good Wife just know how to sex her up and make her look so badass and beautiful. She always disappoints me on the red carpet. It’s not that this Lorena Sarbu dress is BAD, per se, but it’s just kind of blah.

Halle Berry always looks the same to me. If I look at pictures of her from 10 years ago I can’t hardly tell a difference in her 1)hair 2)face/body 3) choice of clothing – BORING.
I totally agree. Her figure is AMAZING. But she’s just so boring to me. Always looks the same. I know everyone says her face is so gorgeous, but I just find her boring and her eyes look tired.
Agreed. Very pretty woman, but I want to abduct her, put her in my trunk, take her to a hair stylist and get her a new look. That sounded funny in my head, but probably super weird in the comment box…
Still love her hair but hate the way she dresses…she always looks dated.
Halle is much improved over her golden globes catastrophe. Her hair and makeup is flawless.
Everyone but Sandra Oh looks amazing-especially Alfre and Freida.
Alfre does look gorgeous. The dress, the color, the bejeweled waist, the boobs! But then I scrolled all the way down – holy crap! Sandals??? Flats to boot?? Who put her in these? Oy…..
Kerri – love her style on ‘Scandal’. All of the outfits she wears there are so power woman/sexy vixen amalgamated into one explosive, sexy, beautiful ensamble. Her red carpet choices this season, not so much. This one is totally atrocious – two lamp shades from a ‘Pink Princess’ bedroom collection.
Archie is one of my favorites, and her style on ‘The Good Wife’ seems to fit her best. But obviously it is as far away from her personal preferences as possible. This dress would be quite flattering but for the hair style and make-up. It’s like the head/face is fighting against the dress.
Halle – this dress makes her body look banging, but in itself it is truly fug! The desperation of trying to recapture the lightning from a decade ago is starting to take it’s toll on her. Her face still looks beautiful, but the hair and make-up are soooooo 15 years ago!
And with all the crazy she’s exposed us all to, I can’t help but see only the viciousness, the hate, the ‘poor little me’ permanent victimhood in her eyes and face.
She used to be such a hot, beautiful woman. Now all I see is a nutjob in desperate denial of the passage of time, stuck on what worked for her ages ago. Sorry cray-cray, lightning doesn’t usually strike twice.
@polk8dot Everything you wrote about Halle is spot on. I was always either indifferent to and her films but ever since I have started coming to this site and reading the articles about her and her former piece, all I ever see is crazy biotch. I feel sorry for her daughter who I hope does comes out of this relatively unscathed.
Agreed, Halle Berry looks amazing. How anyone could see that perfection as boring is beyond me. Alfre Woodard looks like she is wearing a nightgown.
Halle looks gorgeous as usual! Age defying.
I love seeing women of color celebrated on the red carpet, but these ladies are not all bringing it. Pinto looks great. She can pull off a variety of deep colors with her honey brown skin.
Also being crazy must really eat away at the calories because I would kill for Halle’s figure.
I need to inject some crazy into my daily routine.
It takes a lot of energy to spend all day and night scheming and plotting and kicking walls in between. Wish she wasn’t such a selfish mean woman because I just can’t praise her beauty anymore. All I see when I look at her now is someone trying to rip the father out of her child’s life thru devious and shady means.
Kerry Washington is so pretty to look at. I just can’t look away.
Why would it be? I’m sure they would extend invitations to a variety of people and I would love to see white celebrities there supporting their fellow “non-white” contemporaries but let’s be honest. I doubt most of Hollywood look at the NAACP awards as a big red carpet event.
Though to be fair most of the sites that cover the event only showcase the women of color because for most of them, even if they’re on the red card at other events I doubt they would get the time of day.
Who would care what Joy Connor (still don’t know who she is) is wearing when Anne Hathaway or Megan Fox is at the same event.
.
Kerry looks amazing, halle is beyond boring
Kerry Washington is wearing the hairstyle of a 3rd grade girl on picture day at school.
‘mauled a Muppet and then wore its carcass’
LMAO! *wipes tears* Kaiser, you sure have a way with words!!!
Kerry W is much too thin – she’s starting to look like a lollipop.
Freida and Alfre look stunning.
I actually like Kerry Washington’s dress.
Does Halle Berry have fake teeth? I just noticed that on the pic of her smiling.
I think she was blessed with nice teeth (and must’ve had braces at some point in her youth) but she probably also has veneers.
Just like everybody else — er, I mean, possibly like some of her other so-all-naturally-perfect-that-they’ve-never-had-any-form-of-cosmetic-enhancement-performed peers — in Hollywood.
Kerry has been killing it all season. This was a severe miss.
+1
She has been Queen of the Redcarpet all season. Everyone has an off day do we should forgive this one miss.
I actually like it a lot. It’s ultra feminine and retro.
Halle is a very beautiful woman. I do wonder, though, why she never pencils her eyebrows in. Maybe she doesn’t like how it looks? I think it would make her even prettier.
There are White celebs at the event too but not as high profile as the ones Kaiser is showing off. For example Kerry Washington’s Scandel White co-stars are there, the White director from Beasts of the Southern Wild is there-he won Best director at the event-and many more were featured on other websites. The event is to celebrate people of color nominees so I understand why Kaiser is focusing on the women of color. They deserve their time in the spotlight.
Love Alfre Woodard and Archie Panjabi’s outfits the best. Kerry Washington let me down this time. I’m meh on Frieda’s outfit. Halle Berry is beautiful with a knockout body but still completely uninteresting compared to those other ladies.
NAACP = National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
Doesn’t that explain it all, right there?
White celebrities, if there even are any at this event, are not ‘significant’ to them. This day/event is designed to focus specifically and exclusively on ‘colored’ celebs, and the Whites are not appreciated trying to steal the spotlight from them.
NAACP awards, by virtue of their purpose, OPENLY EXCLUDE one group of people from even getting a chance to participate and earn recognition – SOLELY BASED ON RACE!?
I wonder how it would be seen if there were ‘National Association for Advancement of White People’ awards?
NAACP – racist much??
@ Polk8dot there were plenty of white celebrities attending, did you even watch the award?? It celebrates people of colour, which part of that you don’t understand? It’s like saying the GLAAD shouldn’t exist either? WTF?
“I wonder how it would be seen if there were ‘National Association for Advancement of White People’” – sure exists only that it has a more fancy word : AMPAS.
And I suggest you make a proper research on how NAACP came to light before making such ignorant comments.
What in the hell is that orange thing??!!!
Are you serious?! Research the NAACP before making such ridiculous comments.
@Polk8Dot: Yawn.
In response to Polk8dot, I can only look at you side eye child…. -_-
what? there is something severely wrong with…
hmmm. awards that appreciate and highlight the talent of under-represented peoples is not racist. it gives people doing great work their due (something they do not usually get because the establishment tend to focus on the masses to make money). this goes for women, colored people, etc….
here is a chair darling. take a long seat and while i give you a slow clap for your ignorance.
smh
That’s the SAG Awards, The Emmy’s, The Academy Awards.
Instead of complaining about an award show you haven’t watched, why not give it a chance? It was a very lovely presentation. I find the show and other similar necessary as it gives recognition to actors that would not get a shot elsewhere.
I was moved to tears when Admiral Michelle Howard was paid tribute. I had no idea who she was before this. Howard is the 1st African American woman to command a navy ship!! Quite an accomplishment.
@Polk8dot – apparently you don’t understand the decades of fighting for positive roles that African Americans and other actors of colour have had to endure. For many, many years they were relegated to roles as subservient maids, farm hands, “Stepin Fetchit” characters or “yez m’aam” roles (hello Butterfly McQueen) that perpetuated the stereotypical black in America. This is an important event honouring the strides they have made against a very white and racist Hollywood movie machine and yes, there are many white people who attend this event too. So before you make such negative comments do a little research.
@Jaded: Excellent post. Thank you.
I cringed while watching Gone With the Wind. But that was the stereotype of blacks that white Americans wanted to see at the time.
Hattie McDaniel’s performance in that movie managed to transcend the stereoptype.
Some would argue that largely hasn’t changed. You want an Oscar, you’ve got to play a maid or a victim of society.
@ Polk8dot
Agreed.
IMO it is events like this one and organizations like the NAACP that help keep the racial divide open and growing in this country.
“Agreed.
IMO it is events like this one and organizations like the NAACP that help keep the racial divide open and growing in this country.”
No. It’s the fact that people of colour are highly ignored in Hollywood (and in every other professional field that is not basketball or football) that is keeping the racial divide open. It’s also the fact that people like you and Polkadot do not realize that without the NAACP, and without BET (even though it’s crap now) and without the Image Awards, and without Black history month, no one would pay attention to the achievements of Blacks at all. So do us all a favor and take a stadium of seats.
P.S: National Advancement for White People= The Emmys, The Academy Awards, The Golden Globes, The Critics Choice,, and practically every award show that does not have the word Black or Coloured in it.
Oh please. Like no one pays attention to Oprah, or President Obama, or Spike Lee, the Jackson family, Bill Cosby, Prince, Beyonce, Tiger Woods, Nelson Mandela, Condalisa Rice, Colin Powell, etc. etc. etc.
The NAACP was valuable and ground breaking at one time. But like the ACLU that time is over. It’s time to stop putting emphasis on race, IMO, and focus on ability. Focus on a person’s talent–and not the color of their skin.
And the award for the biggest idiot of the day goes to ………….
Halle, still looks amazing, her style has been stuck in the same cycle for about 15 years but her face, that face is amazing.
I love Archie but she, like the Mad Men cast, should get the TGW stylists to dress her for the red carpet.
Archie would look fabulous in that dress if she also had the bad-ass hairdo from TGW.
Halle is timeless and simply gorgeous. Asked the men in my house to vote…hands down Halle, followed by Frieda. My son asked why Kerry was trying to make herself uglier when she’s so attractive normally!
When did Alfre develop those boobs?!! Agree it’s a pretty color she has on and lol at the slippers. Ni guess at her age and level, she can do what she d*** well pleases:)
Halle looks fabulous, but this dress – great though it is – just confirms my opinion on Vivienne Westwood. She just makes the same dress over and over, with minor variations.
I am sick of Halle’s hair.
Alfre looks amazing.
Freda is so beautiful. I don’t know about the dress, can’t tell, but the jewel tone color against her skin is gorgeous and she is such a beautiful girl.
Kerry is so pretty and usually looks great on the red carpet. I don’t know what she was thinking. Just meh.
Yes, Frieda’s dress is gorgeous on her, and it’s by an Indian designer too, which is great.
I don’t think she’s the most beautiful woman out there, but I love how she always looks so fresh, happy and grateful to be where she is. Her smile would lift the darkest mood.
Generally I really love ‘girly’ dresses so should have loved Kerry’s dress. But I dunno. Something’s not quite right. She looks awkward in it, imho. She’s not ‘girly’ enough for such a pastel candy dress to look natural on her, and she’s not ‘edgy’ enough for it to look funky. Also, if you look at the catwalk photos, the hem should be much higher, so I think part of the problem is that it’s designed for super tall models, not someone of average height like Kerry. It just ends up looking like she’s a bit overwhelmed by the dress – it’s wearing her, not the other way round.
and Ms. Kay, thank you for saying it more eloquently than I
Really lovely for Halle.
I like that Halle dresses for her body type; she doesn’t follow trends like wearing ridiculously high stilettos she can’t even walk in. She’s in her 40’s and doesn’t try to look younger than what she is, but still gives younger women a run for their money. Although her hair is short, she could still do different things with it instead of the ole’ faithful spiked look, but at least she can still look hot without all the fake hair everyone wears.
Scary Berry is crazy, and only an average actress, but her body is slammin’. Out of all the women in Hollywood, I covet hers the most because she always looks fit, toned, and not stick skinny. She works out and takes care of herself and it shows. Damn her! Lol
Best dressed: Alfre Woodard, Frieda Pinto and Archie Panjabi.
Kerry Washington’s dress looks like something that was resurrected from the junior prom.
Much as i don’t like her, Halle is still drop-dead gorgeous, and she is wearing the hell out of that so-so dress.
To Polk8dot: I won’t even go into your appalling ignorance over the NAACP, it’s already been pretty well covered by everyone else on here, but suffice to say this country has seen several versions of a “NAAWP”. One is called the Ku Klux Klan. Another calls themselves the Tea Party.
kerry washington’s dress: looks like the lacy negligee mated with the brocade curtains. so not sexy.
Looks like Crazy Berry is trying to play it safe after that shredded pastel disaster. The dress is nice enough but the chick inside it is such a foul, dishonest shrew she might as well be wearing a dung-smeared gunnysack…
Alfre Woodard looks lovely! And I kind of like Kerry Washington’s dress.
I agree with you on all accounts, Kaiser. The orange thing looks like an Orange Julius explosion, too…and I thought Ms. Woodard was Oprah for a minute. Halle; she just seems so cold to me. She is gorgeous, but something about her seems just plain mean.
Wow – Halle’s dress is beautiful on her. Colour, fit, style = perfection.
That is a gorgeous dress. Classic yet sexy in the most feminine way.
I think Halle Berry is as crazy and full of rage as a bag of cats, but that dress and her figure are absolutely GORGEOUS 😀 Her flawless skin tone is like the stuff of dreams…
I love Alfre Woodard 🙂 And while I adore Viola Davis and think she was robbed of the Oscar for her role of Aibileen in ‘The Help’-another of my all time favorites-I’ve often wondered what Alfre would have done differently with the role or if she was ever even up for it… I think at the very least she would have been equally incredible 😀
Also, I don’t think Archie’s dress is all that bad but it would have been A LOT better without the weird blue sequins along the top and with a sweetheart bustline; she’s got a great figure 🙂
westwood is always a stunning designer…
Halle? I can’t say anything about you girl except your psyco-ness disgusts me…have U had your boyfriend beat anybody up lately???
The orange dress is okay from the waist up, but the lower half is a disaster.
I’m glad Alfre had sense enough to wear confortable sandals. Why should she be hurting in stilettos all night?
I really like Sandra Oh and Freida Pinto’s dress.
Alfre Woodward is REALLY short!
Extremely ugly on the inside, so why does it matter?
Halle looks great, but every time I see her now, I just think CRAZY!!
Freida and Alfre look gorgeous.
I kind of like Sandra’s, at leas the color.
Archie’s looks very…budget.
@ Marie Antoinette Jr all these people had to fight to get where they are, as talented and gideted they can be they still had to fight, they didn’t show up and said “yeah I’m talented!” and got hired in a finger snap, so please stop trivializing the struggle behind their success will you? And it goes way back before the likes of Oprah now please… But here HW wise, perhaps you should tell that to the Emmys, Golden Globes, SAG, AMPAS etc etc to focus on talent and *not* the colour of the skin nor background to give everyone an equal chance, and when that happen, come and talk again.
She looks great. I can’t stand the woman but I can admit that. She needs to dress like this more often instead of the skin-bearing dresses she seems so fond of.
As a matter of course, minorities take in a lot of entertainment that ignores or condescendingly tries to appease them. To a large extent this isn’t a problem because it’s not realistic to expect something, it’s unreasonable to expect everything to appeal to you and you’ll miss out on a lot it you’re so rigid. But that can go both ways.
Put yourself in the position of a sector of society who goes largely ignored save for a few words of, ‘There, alright’ faces and then be told that ‘Yeah, mainstream entertainment largely doesn’t care about promoting and celebrating but a few of you. While we celebrate ourselves again and again and again don’t you dare turn yourself aware from our general dismissal of but a handful of you and always look to us for the inclusive approval you won’t get, save for a few scattered cases. And don’t forget: don’t take pride in yourselves without a body that isn’t really paying attention telling you it’s okay because all inner pride is outward scorn and exclusive by nature, of course, we assume…except in our case. Most important: Always be happy with ‘Aren’t you people happy, yet?’ Because it’s the unsympathetic who always understand the full scope of a landscape.’ Never has this awards show ever claimed that any of the other awards shows have no to exist? So upon what grounds are there to declare that these ones should cease, full stop?
Does Women’s History Month disservice men? Does GLAAD hamper straight people? Are we to ban St. Patrick’s Day So what quantifiable and deleterious effect do the Image Awards have on the day to day life of people who aren’t of colour and who says whites are banned from joining in the celebrations? Certainly not the Image awards and there were certainly white people in attendance and who were honoured, if that makes it more justifiable in its existence for you.
So what’s the problem?
gosh, i have the same knuckles as Halle. ugh! i wonder if there’s a such thing as a knuckle-plasty. 🙁
