Pink: ‘Beautiful has never been my goal, joy is my goal – to feel healthy’

Pink covers the March issue of Redbook – has anyone else noticed that Redbook is doing a bang-up lately with scoring good/notable interviews from 30-plus women lately? It’s gotten to the point where I enjoy Redbook interviews more than Vogue interviews. Anyway, Pink got the cover and she’s talking about a lot of different stuff – body image, femininity, her marriage, being healthy. She comes across as… well, refreshingly real. Like, I actually think Pink is a great role model for young women. If I had a daughter, I would be pushing Pink ahead of Selena Gomez, Rihanna and even Ke$ha. Here are some highlights from Pink’s interview:

On how she reconciled with husband Carey Hart after their 2008 separation:
“Eleven months after we broke up, he asked me to fly to Las Vegas to perform on New Year’s Eve at his club. I wanted to see him. And I looked hot. There’s something about breaking up with someone — you just look hotter than you ever did before. I will never look as good as I did those six months after we broke up. Never! [Laughs] Anyway, after sound check I told him that he needed to come to my room. I had made him a photo album of all the cards he had ever given me, of all the photos of our entire relationship. I spent months on this album. On the last page, I pasted a photo of me from a really bad movie I made years ago with my neck slit and blood everywhere. Next to it I wrote, ‘This is me without you.’ On the next page, there was a picture of a baby. And I wrote: ‘The rest is unwritten.’ The divorce papers that we never signed were behind that page. I was like, ‘The rest is up to you.’ And I did all of this in his favorite bra and panties.”

On what makes her feel beautiful:
“Well, I was always considered butch. Feeling beautiful to me is when I feel good in my leather pants and my husband grabs my ass. Or when I’m sitting on a mat and my daughter runs to me with complete joy. Beautiful has never been my goal. Joy is my goal — to feel healthy and strong and powerful and useful and engaged and intelligent and in love. It’s about joy. And there’s such joy now.”

On her self-confidence:
“‘A girl like me’ is someone who doesn’t rest on her looks, who has had people tell me from day one, ‘You’re never going to get magazine covers because you’re not pretty enough.’ I’m totally comfortable with that. I know my strong points: I work hard, I have talent, I’m funny, and I’m a good person.”

Giving birth:
The first night after delivering Willow, Pink adds, a nurse in the hospital spent time helping her adapt to life with a newborn. “We sat up and talked all night with my baby in my arms, and it was like my whole life made sense, for the first time, ever.”

[From Redbook & People]

A lot of celebrity women talk a good game about the “real” priorities, but most of the time it feels like they’re full of it. But I don’t think Pink is. I think she’s come a long way and she’s comfortable in her own skin and she really does feel like “Beautiful has never been my goal. Joy is my goal — to feel healthy and strong and powerful and useful and engaged and intelligent and in love.” Sigh… I love her.

And you know, I never found her very attractive, but in these photos, she’s very pretty. Must be the more “natural” look. I like Pink and her personality. She seems like she would be a blast to hang around with.

  3. La Calabaza says:

    She is beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Katie says:

She’s so awesome and, really, has she ever made a bad song? NO.

    • karmasabiatch! says:

      That’s a great point!

No, she never has. I’ve really gotta show some love for Pink. Tough, funny, real & my pick for a great role model. I’m grooving the fact that she’s never tried to change her looks, botox out and become plastic like so many other singers. Yes, Leann Rimes…I’m talking to you.

  5. aims says:

How refreshing. A smart, strong, funny women. I love her honesty and think shes awsome.

  6. marie says:

    whoops, double..

  7. ella says:

I used to hate her annoying avrillavignesque music video persona, but ever since I saw her on some some talk show I’ve been a fan. She’s so smart, strong and grounded. She seems like she’d be fun to hang out with. Great role model to all girls!

  8. marie says:

  10. Ames says:

P!nk doesn’t know this, but she is my honorary best friend. LOL I love her. I love the way she portrays herself with honesty and the heartfelt messages in her songs. My (real) best friend and I are seeing her in my hometown next month and I can’t wait.

  11. Hannah says:

I do think she is beautiful, though! She has a very pretty face. I think being somewhat muscular and not having a girly haircut is why she doesn’t get magazine covers.

  12. jc126 says:

She IS beautiful! She and Carey Hart are my favorite celebrity couple. Love seeing pics of them, especially out with their daughter.

  13. TheOriginalKitten says:

I can’t imagine how anyone could dislike her, honestly. She just comes across as so self-aware, really sharp, funny and grounded. I want her to be my friend.

  14. palermo says:

I am absolutely in AWE of her physical abilities. She is such an athletic dancer, I think she could be in the Olympics. Really a good role model for young girls.

  15. Bird says:

    I just love her.

  16. MonicaQ says:

She’s pretty much my favorite “pop” star, love her. Gave me the confidence in HS to say, “Hey, screw you, I like my boy t-shirts and make up and mohawk so screw it!”

  17. Heebeegeebee says:

That quote is the most amazing statement, I just love her. My son adores her and her music.

  18. Sarah says:

I think she is so beautiful! I love her outlook on life, her uncompromising individuality, her intelligence and oh yeah, her music, too! I will be sooo disappointed if she ever becomes a botoxy, duck lippy plastic person (ala Nicole Kidman). I know it’s her body, her choice but still…

    • MaiGirl says:

That would really break my heart, her giving in to that fake Hollywood aesthetic. I don’t think she ever will, though. She has had many, many chances to alter herself had she so chosen, and she didn’t, so I don’t think she will now. I’m just glad that Carey appreciates her awesomeness.

  19. Elisabeth says:

i love love love love love love her

  20. skilo says:

I’ve always found Pink beautiful. She’s just not what we are constantly being conditioned to believe is beautiful.

  21. mel says:

I love that her and Cory did not get divorced…like actually worked at getting their priorities straight. They are such good role models. Love them!

  22. GeeMoney says:

While I do think she goes overboard with the tattoos and the pink hair, I like Pink, and I think she’s pretty attractive.

And I secretly wish I had her body, because it’s pretty damn awesome!

  23. Miss Kiki says:

Pink is one of my imaginary best friends, we’d be so awesome together. That interview right there was probably the most interesting one I’v read in a while.

  24. normades says:

And joy and health make a woman beautiful!

  25. KellyinSeattle says:

taking her joy and health all the way to the bank; don’t get me wrong, she’s okay, but a philosopher, no (ducking) I guess I’m just burned out by her, but gobs of people like her, so more power to her. She doesn’t bug me like some singers, so that’s a plus.

  26. Happy21 says:

Just when I didn’t think I could love her more, she says this!

And she IS beautiful. Beautiful inside and out.

  27. RHONYC says:

love her! we are kindred spirits ’cause that awesome creative stunt that she did to get back with Cory is EXACTLY something i could see myself doing.
    good for her!
it’s weird that we even have similar hairstyles! 😀
guess badass minds think alike, lol.
all the doubters can now kiss her million $$$ ‘Cover Girl’ ass. 😉

  28. lucy2 says:

Love her – true to herself and has a great attitude and outlook – and a ton of talent. She absolutely should be looked to as a role model more so than most other pop stars. Glad to see magazines putting her out there, and I think she has a cosmetic contract too.

Did anyone see her Try video, with the dancing? It’s amazing.

  29. K-rock says:

Gawd I just love Pink! Pure awesome!

  30. Madriani's Girl says:

If I had a daughter, THIS is what I would teach her. Just wow. P!nk is awesome.

  31. Violet says:

Love her, she’s always such a refreshing breath of fresh air.

  32. Kristen says:

Wow. Not a single negative thing to say, from anybody, about Pink.

That’s a first! And I have to agree.

  33. Kate says:

I’ve loved her ever since I saw the Stupid Girls video. What an incredibly powerful message to give young girls that song is, all wrapped up in a bubblegum pop package – I just admired her so much for that. She’s amazing.

  34. southernbell317 says:

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Pink… love her, her music, and her hubs! So adorable together… she IS a role model 🙂

  35. Madriani's Girl says:

What I love about her is she just doesn’t give a hell what anyone says. She does what she wants and either you accept her as she is or keep walking. That is a powerfully self-assured woman.

  36. Emily says:

I love Pink. She’s got it absolutely right — talent, work, love, that’s what matters. How you look is nothing at all.

  37. vanna says:

god i love that woman…so strong, beautiful and smart. she really is the best pop star there is right now..forget Queen B

  38. Jana says:

Pink is f-ing perfect!! She is also one of the most under-appreciated musical talents of the last decade.

  39. EllaAnne says:

I think she should play Captain Marvel in Avengers 2. She would be PERFECT.

  40. akua says:

Love Love Love !! And lots of good songs to work out to!

  41. Heather says:

LOVE HER. What an amazing woman!

  42. NinaS says:

I am past the half century mark (just a tad!) and I adore PINK! What a great performer and a grounded, smart woman. I fell in love with her when she did “Stupid Girls.” She is a role model for all young women.

  43. Nina says:

She is the bomb!! I went to the Canyon Ranch about five years ago and she was there… she didn’t hide out like most celebs but took exercise classes, ate in the dining room, did group meditation. She even got the formula for her hair color from her stylist for one of the other guests. Btw, she is more petite and feminine in person than she appears on TV and in magazines. She is REAL and there’s nothing better than that. I have a lot of respect for her and how she’s chosen to live her life. Rock on, Mama!!

    • I Choose Me says:

I’m so glad to hear that she is as awesome in person as she appears. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE HER!

  44. eb says:

She inspires respect. Have since she kissed off the royal heirs for fox hunting. She was asked to perform at a birthday bash and she publicly replied no on the grounds of their barbarity in participating in fox hunting. That’s a lady with principals.

  45. jwoolman says:

Gotta love someone who dresses up like a pirate for the live-action part of a SpongeBob Squarepants special and then cheerfully belts out a song about scurvy… It was a classic, trust me.

  46. Lisa says:

I wanna be bffs with her.

  47. Laura says:

I love her music, but her talking about empowerment is a joke. She’s a notorious mean girl.
