Jennifer Garner in ruffled Gucci at the Oscars: glamorous or fussy?

Jennifer Garner supported her husband Ben Affleck through his Best Movie win in this deep purple tight fitted Gucci gown accented by a bizarre ruffled back that continued into a train. In photos this dress looks better to me than it did on camera, particularly when she was being interviewed by Kristen Chenoweth. (Maybe that’s because I found Chenoweth supremely annoying. Did you see that stunt she pulled with Hugh Jackman asking him if she weighed more than an Oscar?) Garner explained that the gown was custom-made and that “They gave me other ones to chose from but I loved this from the minute I saw the first sketch. I save up all my fashion for red carpet events.” Garner has a banging body but somehow this gown didn’t flatter her and accented the wrong places. Also: matchy bridal shoes! Something nice: I like her statement necklace and her hair and makeup are pretty.

Jane Fonda brought the 80s back in this fierce canary yellow v-neck Atelier Versace complete with freaking shoulder pads and gold detailing around the waist. I’m not kidding, I love this look. This is some bold, dated styling and Fonda pulls it off. The dress looked sexy from the back when she was presenting, too. Work it, Jane!

Melissa McCarthy wore grey David Meister, a designer she’s used many times in the past, and I was underwhelmed by the fit and color of this dress, which was similar to her past red carpet looks. This designer hasn’t really brought it for her. When she was presenting I was struck by the pretty details of the gown, like the beaded sleeves and the cool black triangle inset panel on the gown where a slit would be. Also, I really disliked her huge poofy hair. It seems like everyone was doing that a few years back.

I loved Melissa’s presentation with Paul Rudd for Animated Short and Feature. They’re both excellent at deadpanning it. I was hoping that the show would keep up those staged awkward moments, but apart from the weird Avengers thing there wasn’t much.

I’m adding Norah Jones in here as she was also in grey and was just so sweet on the red carpet. I was impressed with how shy yet genuine she was with Ryan Seacrest. She told him that it was her first Oscars. I don’t have a designer ID on her gown yet, which was pretty but kind of plain to me, which may have been due to the color. Her hair was also too fussy piled on top of her head like that, but she still looked so pretty. Norah performed “Everybody Needs a Best Friend,” from Ted, you can see her performance here on The Oscar website. I felt bad for her because the sound for her vocals was being overwhelmed by the music. The engineers should have perfected the levels during the rehearsals, there was no excuse for that.

Bonus pic with Adele! We’ll have more on her shortly.

Don’t love McCarthy’s look – wish I could see the back of Fonda’s dress.

Totally off topic but that Aaron Tveit really brought it during the Les Mis medley. Russell Crowe as well. Still not sure why I’m so surprised he showed up!

  2. Lune says:

Is Jen garner pregnant. I hate saying that about women but I feel like she’s pregnant again

    • Lee says:

I thought Jen really looked pregnant also! This pic doesn’t show what seemed so obvious during the live red carpet – her thick, protruding abdomen.

    • ataylor says:

Thought that m’self. Is she preggers? Again? So soon after the last one??

And wtf was up with that bizzaro Ben Affleck Iran/Wife transition??

      • Jielle says:

Did Ben seem like he was on Cocaine to anyone else? I caught a segment of his speech replayed over the radio and honestly he seemed like he was tripping on Speed or something. The Iran/Wife thing was just ……..#speechless

      • ataylor says:

@Jielle — No. I think he was talking really fast because the timer was counting down and he didn’t want to get cut off by the “jaws” theme song. His speech was all over the place because, let’s face it, that was his only chance to give his Best Director speech for Argo since he was snubbed. That was his “Oscar moment” that ended up him mashing the subjects of Iran with Wife. LOL. Jen must be PISSED.

    • Rachel says:

My bf and I both wondered if she was pregnant. Her dress was absolutely GORGEOUS, but she’s always had very odd posture where she draws her shoulders back very far and juts her hips forward, making her abdomen protrude. Before she had kids, she could pull it off, but after having three kids, when she does it, everyone’s just going to wonder if she’s pregnant again…

    • BuckyBoyd says:

I see a lot of people are thinking that. I know she said she didn’t want anymore kids but i saw an interview where Ben literally told the host that he was pressuring Jen for for more kids. She could be, i mean lots of wins this awards season means a lot of celebratory sex LOL

    • Becky1 says:

I thought the same thing. If she’s not pregnant, it wasn’t a flattering dress. I have a similar build to Jennifer Garner (small bust, straight up and down) and that would not be the dress I’d pick. It emphasizes that she doesn’t have much of a waist.

    • Tania says:

I don’t think she’s pregnant. She’s had 3 children and her third is only a few months old. Sometimes it can take time for the belly to go flat again, everyone is different!

  3. kaligula says:

Jennifer Garner’s dress is cheap looking. Kind of looks like a bridesmaid’s dress.

Meanwhile Adele is a big, radiant, glorious Goddess! I hope she doesn’t go all Weight Watchers like Jennifer Hudson did. Some women just look great on the larger end of body sizes….

    • Alexandra Bananarama says:

The frilly back was odd, but the color and cut looked great on her. Her style has always been a little quirky.

Hudson went WW extreme, but she lost the weight for the right reasons. Her health was poor and her energy level was down. Adele is beautiful as a full figured woman, but her health and energy suffers from time to time. It couldn’t hurt her to lose a little even if it’s just to extend her life.

    • MaiGirl says:

The color is wonderful, and the cut would be great, except for all those figure-obscuring ruffles on the back. Those TONS of freakin’ ruffles ruined it for me, and again, I LOVE this color!

Jane’s dress makes me wish she would get in a pool catfight with someone 🙂

  4. pretty says:

Melissa McCarthy’s new movie with Sandra Bullock looked soooo awful. hahaha. the movie was one of the ads during breaks and oh god. that movie looks just pathetic.
And i like Sandra bullock. Her face was funny when she was trying to open the envelope lol

Jennifer Garner has gotten it right the entire awards season and I’m glad to see she didn’t disappoint for the Oscars. Seriously, this year has been the best she has ever looked on the red carpet. I don’t think there has been one time this awards season where I didn’t like her dress. She looks classy and beautiful. I hope Affleck realizes how much his supporting wife and children helped rehabilitate his image and help him win the Oscar.

    • Mia 4S says:

See I think that’s why I got so tired of the Afflecks, the campaign with pimping out the family. The only question should be the movie. It’s an insult to him in a strange way; good movie Ben and we will give you the Oscar because your wife can keep her mouth shut, be non-threatening, and play happy housewife? Gross.

      • Lyn says:

Agreed, such a telling contrast to someone like Daniel Day-Lewis, who keeps his family life private and whose wife has her own career.

  6. I LOVED Jennifer’s necklace. Her gown was nice too but that necklace – WOW!

  7. Aiobhan says:

Jane is the best out of all of them. This is how you age gracefully.

    Nora looked adorable.
Melissa looked a hot mess but at least she tried something different.

The only thing nice that I can say about Jennifer’s dress was the color. It is flattering on her skin. But other than that this dress was a fail.

    • L says:

Jane Fonda is the definition of not aging gracefully. Between the admitted facelift and fillers, she was a botoxy mess on stage-her face didn’t move.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

I was gonna say…Fonda has gotten a LOT of work done. She doesn’t look as scary as some of her counterparts but she’s certainly not aging naturally.

      • Aiobhan says:

I don’t agree at all. I am one of the few people who feel that plastic surgery is not the worst thing in the world. Why is it such big deal in the long run if she has had a few surgeries as long as she can live with the outcome.

What I am more remarking on is the fact that she looks confident and happy about being her age and wearing a color that is hard to pull off at any age.

    • I.want.shoes says:

I agree re: Jennifer’s dress. The bust isn’t very unflattering (almost makes her look flat and droopy), the matchy-matchy shoes are cringe-worthy, and the ruffles in the back remind me of a mudskipper.

  8. Faye says:

I thought Garner’s dress would have looked great, if only someone would have cut out those awful back ruffles. It lookes like she was pooping chiffon all over the place. The color was really pretty, though.

I love Melissa McCarthy, but that dress was not good, and very unflattering. Maybe something more streamlined would have been better?

And since you mentioned Chenoweth, yeah, she has gotten uber-annoying. I think she’s an incredibly talented singer, but over they years she’s gotten too invested in this cutesy-little-girl act, and since she’s now obviously middle-aged (with some very aging Botox and facial work), it’s just creepy now.

    • MaiGirl says:

THANK YOU!!! I have been saying the same thing about Chenoweth for YEARS. So talented, such a great voice, and I get that she’s a tiny thing, but it’s getting rather Baby Jane at this point. And no one in Hollywood has a shinier, squarer, veinier fivehead than her.

    • Becky1 says:

Yes-Kristin Chenoweth is very talented but her little girl schtick is really off-putting. I don’t like the little girl thing when I see women in their 20’s doing it but when it comes from someone in their 40’s it’s really pathetic.

  9. gatinha says:

i really liked jennifer garner’s whole look. the dress may have a bit of a mohawk but i think it was a good choice for her.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Me too. That’s her style-simple and classic and maybe a bit boring. The color looked great on her and overall I thought she looked good.

    • Tiffany says:

I liked it a lot too. It made it more of an interesting dress, instead of a boring column.

I thought the color was sooooo beautiful, and the jewels and make up were perfect.

  10. LadyMTL says:

I love the color of Jen Garner’s dress, but that’s about it. I’m not a huge fan of massive ruffles and feathers and etc and I think if the back of the dress had been a little less obnoxious in that regard I would have liked it more.

Oh, and massive NO to the matching shoes!

  11. Redheadwriter says:

Norah’s dress was Tadashi Shoji. A designer that Melissa needs to get to know much better if she’s going to keep dressing like she did for this.

  12. Shira says:

Jen can do no wrong in my eyes. But I don’t like the fact that the shoes matched the dress.

  13. Esmom says:

I’ve seen Jen G look much better and something in her face/around her eyes made it seem like she was mildly sedated.

I think Melissa’s makeup was beautiful, hair actually not too bad but the dress was too matronly.

  14. Hubbahun says:

Loved the colour of Jen’s dress, and her hair. God, Norah Jones is so beautiful! And I love how curvy and sensual her body is…sigh, girl crush.

  15. NerdMomma says:

I am sorry, but Melissa McCarthy’s dress is terrible. There is no part of that dress that is well-done. She needs to find another designer to work with.

Jennifer Garner’s matchy shoes were my favorite part of her look! *hides face* I’m like 15 years behind in fashion.

    • lucy says:

I agree with you about Melissa’s look. Sooooo no, not even close to working.

Loved Garner’s gown on her, including the spectaculor color! Not minding the matching shoes at all, but I suppose a metallic thin multi-strappy sandal could also have worked.

  16. bea says:

The fit of dress has a lot to do with the success of your look. Jennifer G’s purple thing fits poorly at the bust and in the bodice. And the shoes are very Frankenstein.

Melissa McC – NO ONE knows how to dress/style her. That thing she is wearing is hideous. The gathering is too low, the neckline is unflattering, the black trash bag insert and the train is just weird and her hair style overwhelms her face.

Norah Jones is very pretty, but her dress looks like Spanx and she looks supremely uncomfortable. Her hair looks like a 1960s prom queen. Not good, but glad she was there.

And Jane Fonda really is workin’ it. She’s staying in her comfort zone, she looks confident and it works.

  17. Lisa says:

Loved the color on Garner, not loving the style, but overall, thought she looked very pretty. Fonda is 75, people. She nailed it! I hated Melissa McCarthy’s dress. she needs a new stylist.

    • Zelle says:

I hesitate to even call that a dress. It looks like a 12 year old boy wrapped a random piece of fabric around her and secured it on the side with some sort of knot he learned in boyscouts. Ridiculous that she would show up like that. Her hair was awful, color was awful…everything was awful. Size should be no consideration, plenty of plus size women find dresses that flatter what they have and make them look great(Adele). I love her and am no skinny minny myself but it looks like she is continually gaining weight and no longer looks like just her body type but starts to look really unhealthy. Actually surprised no one really mentions this. Its perfectly fine to talk about how skinny actresses look unhealthy but not overweight ones?

      • pamspam says:

Agreed. She does look unhealthy now, and seemed to be having trouble walking into the after party. I suppose it could have been due to her feet hurting after hours in heels, but it just looked painful and it made me sad for her. 🙁

  18. Janet says:

Garner looked like a purple Godzilla. Fonda is fabulous!

  19. spinner says:

Jane Fonda needs to be launched into outer-space.

Whomever was in charge of sound production needs to be launched into outer-space. Dreadful.

Norah is so lovely. I felt bad for all who sang/performed. The sound people should have had that shit nailed down.

  20. LadyAnne says:

I think Jennifer looked great, the colour of the dress is stunning.

    • tracking says:

+1 I agree, one of my favorite looks. Beautiful styling as well. Oh, Melissa needs a new stylist ASAP.

  21. SunnySide says:

I think Melissa McCarthy’s dress was a poor color choice after all the controversy where that critic called her a hippo.

Her stylist should be fired because he can’t dress Melissa’s body type and she had electrical socket hair! A bold color would have been amazing with Melissa’s bold personality. There are also flattering styles out there and Melissa could have looked wonderful but what the stylist did to her was a travesty. The gown looked even worse in motion!

  22. Dea says:

Whatever she wears does not perfectly suit her. I feel bad to say it but there is no hollywood glamour on her. She makes all designer dresses look cheap.
As to the win, Affleck won because of the huge PR game. Ben ditched oscars when he did not get nominated but thanked them right away via twitter when he won the best picture. This win was just a political statement and not quite deserved compare to other movies.

  23. MG says:

I couldn’t believe what an idiot Kristen Chenoweth was, constantly talking about how tiny she is. “Do I way more than an Oscar?” I’m a larger woman and if I was standing there with my husband and this idiot kept talking about how tiny she was it would have made me uncomfortable. But when Hugh Jackman picked up his wife…so cute and adorable and perfect. I’ve recently lost a lot of weight and I’m always asking my husband to pick me up….lol.

    • Becky1 says:

Yes! The whole “look how teeny tiny I am” routine was creepy. It made me wonder if she has an eating disorder. It was really weird.

  24. Nicolette says:

Love Norah’s dress, it’s beautiful. Jane Fonda still looks great. Not liking Jen’s dress at all.

  25. lucy2 says:

Jennifer looked great – I love that necklace! The ruffles are a bit much for me, but the color is lovely.
Jane looked pretty awesome, and Norah looked good too. Even Adele was drowned out a bit by the music, I can’t believe the sound was so bad.

Melissa’s dress would have been better in a gorgeous color. If you go drab/neutral, it better be a fantastic shape, and that is not.

  26. Dawn says:

I loved that color on Jennifer G. That is so beautiful. And Jane Fonda looks awsome. I hope I can look half that good when I am her age. Norah and Adele are perfection and that leaves Melissa who I feel missed the boat both in color and cut of her dress.

  27. Jackie Jormp Jomp (formerly Zelda) says:

I get the ruffle, in theory, but this one looks CHEAP.

    Love Fonda’s look.

  28. kar says:

I think Norah Jones said her dress was by Tadashi Shoji during the live feed, but I may be mistaken!

Jennifer looked amazing, Melissa has an evil stylist who clearly hates her :(! Jane Fonda rocked that Versace, really hope that yellow comes into fashion in a big way, so lovely!

  29. Mrs.Darcy says:

Both Jennifer G and Aniston’s strapless gowns have the same problem I am noticing with many of the strapless gowns the stars are wearing at the moment – they are just kind of smushing the boobs, no lift (a little cleavage never killed anybody), making the torso look sausage-y even on very thin women. The color and hair and everything else on Garner are super pretty though, that purple is pretty divine.

Jane Fonda needs to re-think her Mom hair, sorry. I know she is an older lady but with the retro dress it is too much. Insane body though. Melissa McCarthy, I love you but no. It must be so hard to find something flattering and she obviously feels comfortable with this designer so I don’t want to rag on her too much. She never looked this big in Gilmore Girls, I don’t know if she has gained alot or it is just bad styling.

Norah and Adele are cute, I really love Norah’s dress actually.

    • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

“She never looked this big in Gilmore Girls, I don’t know if she has gained alot or it is just bad styling.”

I know! Im a big GG fan, and she was NEVER close to this size on that show. I do think it’s a little sad that she keeps being offered roles that almost seem to justify – or even call for – her being morbidly obese, therefore encouraging her eating habits/ lifestyle. She will forever be Sooki to me though, and she is obviously very talented at being hilarious and loveable.

  30. I Choose Me says:

Re: Melissa McCarthy, terrible dress on an awesome, pretty lady.

Norah Jones looks terrific. And here comes Jane Fonda showing them all how it’s done – the dress flatters her immensely and it’s nice to see good posture for once.

  31. bella says:

am i the only one annoyed with ben affleck’s “tribute” to his wife during his acceptance speech last night? thanks her for working at their marriage…
    good GAWD.
how obvious can a man be that he is miserable in his marriage…
how dreadful for her. did someone suck her brain out?

    • ataylor says:

Jen must be pissed. She didn’t look too thrilled by his “recovery” of comparing her to Iran…which lead to his “marriage is work”…and…”it’s not always easy” speech etc. etc. lol.

  32. RHONYC says:

HOW THE F*CK DID JANE ‘TURN BACK TI-IME’ ON HER NECK???!!!

who is her doctor? i need names!

her décolleté rivals broads 30 years her junior.

    simply magical!!! 😯

    • bella says:

      YES!
thanks for reminding me…seeing Jane Fonda’s neck last night was the single most captivating Oscar moment.
how the HELL does her neck look that way?
      amazing…

  33. emmie_a says:

Jennifer and her dress reminds me of a monochrome peacock.

  34. taxi says:

Fonda & Garner looked fabulous, yes, even with JG’s matched shoes. Kerry Washington matched her shoes too.

Melissa was a catastrophe. Maybe she has to have huge hair to try to balance her body? Flat hair might make her look like a pinhead. She needs to have a sit-down with J Hudson because she cannot be healthy lugging all that lard. Her knees are going to be ruined along with other body parts.

  35. Victory says:

Fonda and Garner looked awesome. love their dresses. I don’t think Garner is pregnant again.

  36. Jackson says:

“Fierce” is the best word that comes to mind when I saw Jane. Damn. She looks so self-confident and strong.

I love that color on Jen and I don’t mind the ruffle. Not a fan of her hair or her makeup, both seem kind of blah and tired – like how she would look at the END of the night, not the beginning. She looked good overall though.

Melissa needs to find a different designer and/or stylist. I get that she’s a larger lady and fairly short but no reason to look so frumpy.

  37. Diana says:

Jennifer G’s dress was nice, nothing out of the ordinary just nice. I thought Kristen Chenoweth was adorable with Hugh. Jane Fonda was stelar and I hated Melissa’s entire look. Norah was really sweet and the dress was pretty.

  38. Memphis says:

I didn’t really like Jen’s dress. The front looked plain and flat and the material made it look like a cheap bridesmaid gown..

Melissa McCarthy…I just hated the whole look. The color was so damn drab! Did no one want to shine at the Oscars?

  39. Kelly says:

Love love Jane Fonda and Melissa McCarthy. They are so awesome!!

Every time I see Jennifer Garner I think “Stepford wife.”

  40. StaCat1 says:

Jennifer is inconsistent on the red carpet..but I still find her so likeable. And I think she needed to be on that stage with Ben. he can’t thank her enough for turning it all around for him!

  41. Jenn says:

I LOVE the dress on Jen! She looks fab!!!!!!

  42. valleymiss says:

I thought Jane Fonda looked gorgeous. I’d never have the guts to pull off such a color! It was very Alexis Carrington.

Kristen Chenowith was *beyond* annoying. She made every interview about her. “Oh, I’m so thin! Oh, I’m so short!” Meanwhile, they barely showed Brandi Glanville…I love Brandi, but her dress was *awful.* She had such a great opportunity and she blew it.

I loved the color of Jen Garner’s dress, and her subtle makeup. Didn’t love the train of the dress. The only thing I liked about Melissa McCarthy’s dress was the black insert at the bottom! I thought it looked interesting.

  43. KellyinSeattle says:

I didn’t really like Jennifer’s dress..the color was pretty, but it reminded me of a geico/lizard in the back….at least it was something different. Wow, all I can say about Brandi’s dress is …whoa…duct tape to the max.

  44. serena says:

Ladies, get your dress fitted before going to the Oscars.. shees, I like Jennifer’s dress, it’s very pretty and glamourous. Usually I hate ruffles, but this one was perfect on her dress. Total win on her look.

  45. Laura says:

I loooooooved Norah Jones’ earrings that she wore during her performance!

I also really liked the dark blue dress that Jamie Fox’s daughter wore 🙂

  46. lisa2 says:

When I saw Melissa arrive I just got so sad. That whole look was terrible. Jennifer Hudson was with a woman that was very large in size, and her look was very lovely and fitted. . I’m sure she didn’t have access to named designers.

Melissa has a fashion background and is planning a fashion line for plus sized women. This is not the look you want to show as an example of your product. I hated everything about it. Color, fit, styling. All a miss for me. I will say I love the earrings and purse

I love the color of Jennifer’s dress. And I actually like the back better then the front. Some different shoes would have worked better.

Jane is HOT and Sexy. I don’t know who has done the work on her but they are fab. I notice her NECK area. Her neck and chest areas looks so young. That is what does it for me. I saw a picture of another female the other day and her neck at 46 looked like that of a much older woman. Jane admitted she has had a lot of work done, but she was in such great shape for years so that made the difference.

  47. Dirty Martini says:

The color of Jennifer’s dress was just fabulous…..lovely color for her. Too bad the cut was atrocious. The back was horrific.

    Jane Fonda rocked it.

  48. Patrice says:

I absolutely love the cut, color & material of Norah’s gown, especially on her figure 🙂

Jane Fonda worked the hell out of that dress and I think she looked incredible head to toe (Can you believe the woman is almost 80??!!) My only complaint with her dress choice is the color. Can you imagine how much better the severe cut and all that detailing would have looked if it were white?? 🙂

I love Melissa McCarthy but I HATED everything about that dress. (Why, Melissa? Why??) She’s got such a beautiful face that was majorly highlighted by that gorgeous blue jersey gown that she wore a year or two back, but this year it looks like they just threw a big sack on her and called it a day. I found that weird black panel at the bottom to be completely distracting when she was on stage and it seems pretty obvious (imho) that the dress was originally designed w/a slit and they just patched it up with that. Why not just make her a custom gown w/o it?? So strange…

  49. A Fan says:

    The colour’s great…that’s all I’ve got.

Oh. The shoes are downright awful.
