Holly Madison gives birth to baby girl Rainbow Aurora, defends her name choice

Last week, Holly Madison gave birth to a baby girl. The father is Pasquale Rotella, who seems like some kind of shady Las Vegas type, and I think Pasquale is under indictment currently or something. Still, Holly has always wanted a baby, and I was happy for her. I didn’t write about it because I was waiting to see what she named her baby girl. And she announced it on Friday, and it’s a doozy – Rainbow Aurora Rotella. It seems like a super-hippie name, while at the same time it seems kind of immature, like what a 5-year-old dreams of naming a baby. Like, “I’ll name my daughter Princess Sparkle Glitter! Or Rainbow Pony!” Well, Holly heard that people were shading her baby name and she took to her Celebuzz blog to call us all “smug haters”.

I got my nails done Rainbow colors to celebrate my new daughter’s name!

I have always loved the name Rainbow. There was a girl in my school a few years younger than me named Rainbow and I was so envious of her name because it was so pretty and unusual. She was a perfectly normal, well-adjusted, sporty girl, by the way, so I’m not worried about my daughter being “traumatized” by having an unusual name.

There are a lot of smug haters out there who bag on my choice of a name, but I don’t care about what they think. I want my daughter to be proud of who she is and learn to speak up and stand up for herself at a young age. I spent most of my life being a people-pleaser who worried about what other people thought or thought was cool and I don’t want that for her.

I couldn’t be more blessed to have such a perfect daughter and have never been happier than I am now!

[From Celebuzz]

Holly actually has a point. Rainbow Aurora is probably going to be a class full of Isabellas, Bellas, Emmas, Madisons, Emilys, Harpers, Sophias, Lilys, Mias, and Chloes. Rainbow probably will be one of the few Rainbows out there, and she’ll have to defend her hippie name often enough. I would imagine that at some point in her childhood, she’s going to ask everyone to start calling her “Rain Rotella”. And that’s actually kind of cute.

It’s not as if the kid’s going to an ivy league school anyway.

    • lune says:

The combo of first and middle makes her sound like a stripper. She should’ve done a traditional middle name.

      • apsutter says:

Eh, middle names are essentially useless anyways. I don’t plan on having kids but if I did I wouldn’t even bother with one.

    • backwards says:

      Harsh.

      • Isa says:

Asputter if she did a traditional middle name the girl would have an option to go by that rather than rainbow.

  2. gee says:

I actually don’t hate it.. it’s cute, and she has a nice normal middle name to go by if she doesn’t like being Rainbow.

  3. brin says:

I agree, she should just shorten it to Rain and it would sound better.

  4. Ginger says:

Oh Kaiser…there are normal people that also live in Las Vegas. Not all of us are shady types. I agree that Rainbow seems immature to name your daughter. The first thing I thought of was that Holly has an affinity for all things Disney so that may possibly explain her choice. She looks gorgeous in that red dress but I’m not feeling the blue one.

  5. LadyMTL says:

I actually don’t hate Rainbow, it’s the Aurora part that has me eye-rolling. It’s just such an awkward sounding name, especially following Rainbow…too many R’s. (Also, her initials will be RAR! LOL)

    • lee says:

I knew an Aurora as a kid and she went by Aurie. I LOVED her name. She was good friends with my cousin, who was jealous she had Sleeping Beauty’s name. I was more of a tomboy and loved that it sounded cute but a little androgynous in shortened form.

      • wynona says:

i love aurora too, it sounds diffrent without being too wierd. Also i bet there are no strippers called aurora

  6. apsutter says:

I actually think it’s very cute! Plus it can be nice having a name that few other people have. My name isn’t unusual(April) but I’ve only met a handful of other people who share it and I was not envious of the dozens of Brittany’s and Ashley’s that I knew growing up. Plus it’s very conducive to good nicknames and she could always go by Aurora if she wanted which is a beautiful name.

  7. elceibeno says:

I wouldn’t name my daughter Rainbow Aurora. Rainbow Rotella sound like a multi-grain pasta.

  8. Jag says:

+1 to Sounding like a pasta. lol

Also agreed that it’s the combo of the first and middle name that makes it too much. One or the other would’ve been fine, imo, but she’s not my daughter. I feel sorry for kids whose parents want them to be the exact opposite of what they are; what if her daughter is just like her? She’ll potentially feel pushed into being what she isn’t, which is exactly what Holly said she didn’t want her daughter to be – a people pleaser. Best wishes for her.

  9. Faye says:

I was just going to ask if anyone else felt a sudden, inexplicable urge for tri-color pasta.

I don’t know, I feel like if you want your child to stand out for something and be unique, his or her name shouldn’t be that thing — I’d rather it would be for some positive character trait, skill, or talent. But what do I know!

  10. me says:

I agree with everyone above. It sounds like a special at an Italian restaurant. But I do love holly .congrats.

  11. Blue says:

It’s kind of cute and they will probably end up calling her “Rain” anyways. She isn’t my kid or anyone else’s so I don’t know why people harp on what other people name their child. I know I know Celebitchy, she’s a public figure blah, blah, blah. It would be great if she went to an Ivy League school and became a doctor or lawyer or something. Dr. Rainbow Aurora Rotella.

  12. Barrett says:

Holly seems like a nice person; I watched her bio on tv once. She is just not educated but harmless. Like her dreams are being in playboy, getting plastic surgery to look like a Barbie, and naming her daughter rainbow. She has made good money which is ironic compared to women who break there back at regular jobs. It’s like money can’t buy her class considering her upbringing but she is probably sweet despite her trashiness.

    • Trudy says:

I think she really is a sweet girl. She may have a mean side but honestly everyone has their day. The thing I like about her is how artistic she is. Always drawing and painting and decorating. She has talent in that field, and I bet there are a lot more stuff she can do as well, but she just chose to take the superficial route!

  13. DeltaJuliet says:

“I want my daughter to know how to stand up for herself so I gave her a name that she will be picked on for constantly”. Yeah, way to go.

And yes, I am now craving tri colored pasta with melted butter, damn it.

  14. Akula says:

Ok I don’t love the name but two things came to mind when I read it – Rain is actually an okay name (to me). And between Apple and Rainbow I’d rather be called Rainbow.

  15. Micki says:

It’s unusual name but probably better than Rainbow Dawn what Aurora actually means.
    I like Aurora better.

  16. Tulip says:

This reminds me of that Johnny Cash song “A boy named Sue”. Rainbow WILL get teased with a name like that, but hopefully she’ll learn to hold her own because of it.

  17. Just Me says:

Agree that it sounds like pasta.

She can always have people call her Rainy. I know a few little girls by that name. Often, it’s short for Lorraine.

I like Holly. I hope she’s found her happiness.

  18. Chell says:

A teacher friend of mine just told me there is a girl in her clas named SECRET…yes, like the deodorant. This has nothing to do with the story except for the fact I would take Rainbow as my name over Secret!
I don’t hate the name, however I do wish people would remember that their child will grow up to be an adult & Rainbow is NOT an adult name, it is the name of one of the Care Bears.

  19. Joanna says:

I don’t think Rainbow’s that bad. I prefer it over Apple, Porsche.

I think Holly seems very nice. I wish she had found a nice guy to have a baby with. I don’t know this guy but have heard he’s in trouble with the law. But most girls that do Playboy, porn, have been sexually abused and most don’t end up having a normal life. So I guess at least she had the baby she wanted.

    • Brittney says:

Yeah… to be honest, when I saw a headline elsewhere along the lines of “you’ll never believe what Holly Madison named her baby”, my first thought was “okay so that blind about selling the rights WAS about her”… but when I read it, I was actually shocked that it was so normal.

After a headline like that, the name “Rainbow” is anti-climactic in the industry that gave birth to Pilot Inspektor and Tu Morrow.

    • anotherrandom says:

I think Porsche like the car is stupid but I love Portia like the strong, brilliant, female character in Merchant of Venice. Of course I also like Reagan and Hero…I have a thing for Shakespeare’s names. Though I do realize I could never saddle a daughter with those names.

      • Erinn says:

There was a Reagan in my class. It didn’t seem odd. There was also a male Reagan on my bus in school.

  20. Nava says:

Aurora was the name of Blanche’s (Golden Girls) granddaughter. So when I hear the name ‘Aurora,’ (first, or middle name) I think of the Golden Girls.

    • Waldemar says:

Ha! Just scrolled through the comments to see if somebody would make that connection too. And Blanche kept calling her Oreo, which makes me laugh every time.

    • jane's evil twin says:

The first thing I always think of when I hear Aurora is Shirley MClaine’s character in Terms of Endearment.Or the city in Colorado where that crazy guy shot the people in the Batman premeiere.

  21. Flahoola says:

This song is going to be stuck in my head all day now ‘A boy named Sue’- Johnny Cash

  22. Brittney says:

Oh man, that’s exactly how my nails are painted right now (glittery rainbow colors), so I hope no one at the office follows her Twitter or anything. I did it to impress my Little Sister, but let’s face it, rainbows are just fun.

And wasn’t she heavily favored as the subject of that blind item about a celebrity trying to SELL naming rights for her baby? It makes even more sense now… like she never bothered to come up with a real name because she assumed she’d be going with some brand.

  23. dcypher1 says:

Sounds like holly and her bd were on sum good mollys cus thats the kinda name u would name ur baby while rolling. Sounds like my bff in high schools raver name. That takes me back now im going to listen to sum trance and bust out the glow sticks and rave on.

  24. Madpoe says:

Aurora sounds better on the Sleeping Beauty princess.
I do get the love of nature names and all, but Rainbow sounds like an imaginary friend. I can picture some mom asking her child if she wants a play date with Rainbow. Now that I look at it, it reminds me of rainbow sprinkles. god i want some ice cream right now.

  25. lisa says:

hef’s girlfriends are basically well paid prostitutes. im sure lots of hookers name their kids rainbow.

  26. Jackie Jormp Jomp (formerly Zelda) says:

I can’t wait for the names “Emma” and “Emily” to be over already.

(no offense to those with those names, but enough–I’ve been hearing them since the early 90s)

  27. Meggin says:

I think it’s kind of cute! I like it better than the name Harper… Which is the new popular name.

  28. ruby says:

I think Aurora or even Rainbow would have been a lot more wearable if they were paired with a more “sensible” middle name. As it is, what bothers me is that the names seem to be trying to top each other, it’s like they can’t coexist peacefully. Also, too many “R”s.

But I can’t fault her for going with something unusual. It’s not ugly, and it’s not boring like Bella or Chloe and that kind of overused names.

While we’re on the topic of babies, will you cover the Duggar pregnancy announcement ? i’d love to hear your take on it 🙂

  29. Memphis says:

Rainbow Aurora? Really Holly Madison!? Really?

I can’t fault her for not going traditional, but Rainbow just brings up a hippie girl hotboxing or dropping some candy acid dots to me … Rain would be cute tho, and she wont sound so much like a my little pony character.

But again, it’s not my baby so while I will diss the name Rainbow (uhh, really?), It really doesn’t matter what I think.

  30. Bodhi says:

I like it a lot better than Hylton & Hyatt, which are the names 2 girls I went to hs with gave their kids. BLECH

  31. j.eyre says:

The Heiress, who is turning 6 soon, thinks this is the greatest name she has ever heard and has been side-eyeing me ever since for not naming her Rainbow Aurora.

  32. dcypher1 says:

Btw her bd might be going to jail for 10 yrs for throwing illegal parties and bribing l.a. City council members to throw these raves like edc.

  33. lisa says:

there are a lot of Rs in that name, it’s awkward sounding no matter what you think of the name

i hope she isnt one of those kids who takes years to pronounce R correctly

    • WickedSteppMom says:

I was just thinking that about pronouncing the Rs. My 8 y/o daughter has been in speech therapy for 1.5 years for difficulty w/her R’s & L’s…her first name is 2 syllables, w/an R in the middle, her middle name is 2 syllables & starts w/an R. My 4.5 y/o son is getting ready to start speech therapy for difficulties w/S, Z, R, & L. His first name is Zachary, middle name has a Z in it, and our last name starts w/S…so right now, he has a hell of a time saying his own name, and it’s a “normal” name.

  34. Isa says:

When I was a little girl I wanted to be named rainbow too! But then I grew up.
I can deal with all the names separately but combined it’s a mess. Too many Rs. My daughter still can’t say R properly.

  35. Shelly says:

Who cares, it’s her baby, she can name her what she wants to. I imagine she will probably end up going by Rain anyway.

  36. janie says:

Leave her alone.. She waited so long to have a baby & I’m thrilled for her!!! I love her name, it’s so cute! Congrats Holly & Pasquale!! Baby Rainbow…

  37. Patrice says:

For me, it’s not so much about the name itself but rather her reasoning behind it: Holly herself admits that she grew up a “people pleaser” and WANTS her daughter to have to defend her name almost from day one because she wants her learn early on how to stand up to adversity because she herself never did. I’m sorry but, what type of s**t is that?! There are plenty of more sound ways to teach your children how to navigate (the inevitable) adversity that they will face growing up w/o intentionally starting them off with a hurdle. Whether it was naming her child something that she finds entertaining in the moment-children DO grow up-or giving an even more bs reason for it, this whole thing is classic Hollywood narcissism. It’s all about HOLLY.

And make no mistake: Holly knew exactly what she was doing with naming her daughter “Rainbow” in that it would garner her a few more mins of fame now that the pregnancy is over. She was suddenly everywhere in the media from the second she announced that she was knocked up. Don’t be fooled y’all.

  38. Lolly says:

Seems sucking on hef’s magic stick may’ve scrambled Holly’s Brains. Please don’t punish your kid with this ridiculous name in a bid to make your boring self interesting

  39. Squeakie says:

That little girl is going to LOVE her name growing up..she will probably want a nickname by the time she is a teenager tho. I think it is a cute name and definatly not the worst celebrity baby name out there!

  40. Stacia says:

Why did I think, …”Aurora Borealis” when I saw that name.

Oh well she could have named her ‘Unicorn Rainbow Lollipop’.

  41. Axis2ClusterB says:

I think it’s cute. My first name is very unusual – I never even heard of anyone else sharing a first name with me until I was in my 20s – and I hated it with a passion and wanted to be named Jennifer until I was in my late teens, when I decided it was cool to have such a different name.

    • anonymous fan says:

OMG I have got to know what your first name is.Please tell us.How weird is it?

      • Axis2ClusterB says:

Not weird, just unusual. It’s Skyla. The only thing that bugs me now is that people always want to put an R on the end of it.

  42. skuddles says:

Well it could have been worse – she could have named the kid “Playmate Of The Year” right?

  43. Lemony says:

Aurora Rainbow might’ve been less awkward.

  44. erikarain says:

My middle name is Rain. I love it, and have not been traumatized by it – quite the opposite, actually.

  45. embra says:

Well, my granddaughter’s name is Rain- I think it’s sweet! I think she will be teased but show me a child who isn’t. Happy for her, she looks softer and happy and I like the reasoning behind the name. I went to school with a girl named Tally- I thought it was so cute- she was of course called Tally whacker but I always thought I’d name a daughter Tally if I had one. Just boys here though soo…
