Benedict Cumberbatch’s Assange is ‘twitchy & brilliant’, says PM David Cameron

wenn5853381

Yay! More Benedict Cumberbatch! Cumby is going to be everywhere on Thursday and Friday, so I hope you Cumberbitches prepare yourselves and your Cumberburning loins. At some point, Benedict is going to have a London premiere for The Fifth Estate, and probably a NYC premiere too. I don’t know when. But British Cumberbitches get to see the movie before the Americans – it’s being released there this week, and America gets it next week. Still, Benedict will be in NYC this week to promote it. He’ll be on Good Morning America, Katie Couric and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, all on Thursday. Then on Friday he’s going to do a Reddit Ask Me Anything. OH GOD. That will either be brilliant or career-destroying, nothing in-between.

But does it even matter? As more critics see the film, the film is looking more and more like a potential bomb. RISE, CUMBERBITCHES. Our man needs us! You can see some reviews and such here at Rotten Tomatoes – as I’m writing this, the movie is at a heartbreaking 40%. And to add insult to injury, Prime Minister David Cameron is a fan of Benedict. Nooooo.

David Cameron has hailed Benedict Cumberbatch’s portrayal of the “twitchiness” of Julian Assange and expressed qualified support for the early work of the WikiLeaks founder. The prime minister, who described Cumberbatch’s performance in The Fifth Estate as brilliant, said WikiLeaks had done well in its early period when it exposed corruption in Africa. But he said that in its later period WikiLeaks had put lives at risk.

Cameron was asked to review the Fifth Estate before an appearance on The Agenda on ITV on Monday night. He managed to see the first part of the film. The PM told ITN’s political editor, Tom Bradby, who presents The Agenda: “Benedict Cumberbatch – brilliant, fantastic piece of acting. The twitchiness and everything of Julian Assange is brilliantly portrayed.”

But Cameron said he felt uneasy that in the film Assange appears to be more concerned about the fate of people who leaked documents to WikiLeaks – an apparent reference to Chelsea Manning – rather than people whose security may have been jeopardised by the leaks.

The prime minister said: “There is an interesting bit at the beginning when he says some of these documents are confidential, people’s lives are at risk and of course he is thinking of the people who have leaked them. Actually you also need to think about the people whose lives are at risk because they have been leaked. In the bit of the film I saw that didn’t come out enough. But it makes you think.”

But the PM, who campaigned strongly in favour of open government while in opposition at the time that WikiLeaks first started to make an impact, said he had some understanding of the motives for its early work. Asked whether he had sympathy for the way in which it had exposed corruption, he said: “Yes, you do feel sympathy for them because some of the things they uncover in Africa and elsewhere – you think it is great that information has been revealed. Transparency, sunlight is a great disinfectant. Transparency about information and where money is spent and how it is spent – this helps keep governments and politicians honest. So it is a good thing.”

But Cameron questioned what he called the “huge dumps of information” by WikiLeaks. He said: “But later on the film when it gets on to what happened recently where just huge dumps of information – every single telegram they had was made public without thinking of the consequences and huge lives could be put at risk. There is some information that government has to keep secret for national security, for people’s safety. I think that needs to be part of the debate too.”

[From The Guardian]

Eh, I kind of think Cameron makes a good point. Does that make me a Tory? I wonder if Benedict has ever voted Tory. He often sounds like a dyed-in-the-wool Labor voter, but you never know.

Also, the full-length (ish) trailer for Little Favor was released. Cumberbloody! CUMBERCIDE. Is it funny to anyone else that Cumby is playing some badass special forces dude who karate chops people? God bless him. I love him.

Poor Cumby. Although I’ll bet he’s secretly flattered. I will put on my “Tony Benn Forever” t-shirt and comfort him.

And yes to the hilarity of Cumby the action hero. Bless him.

    • Sixer says:

I see your t-shirt and raise you a donkey jacket with “Arthur Scargill walks on water” written on the back.

      Beat that. Ner.

(I don’t really have one but I saw it in a picture once. That counts, right?)

      • T.Fanty says:

Oh my god, that’s awesome. I see your Donkey jacket and raise you my article that talks about Howard Barker and slags off Maggie T (partly self-promotion, and partly because I don’t think a Neil Kinnock bald cap is going to do the trick). Cumby’s going to love it, now that he needs to regain his liberal credibility.

*goes off to see how easily I can still alternate between Chav English and RP*

      • Sixer says:

Somewhere around, I have a book on the history of radical British writing. I might need it! Um…

I see your article (gah, I hate the ease with which you had something to beat my awesome donkey jacket) and raise you ticket stubs from a Red Wedge gig (which my older cousin took me to). Elton Schmelton.

… sans book to hand, that’s the best I can do.

      • T.Fanty says:

Dammit. My youth (smugsmugsmug) betrays me. I first heard of Tony Benn when I was wee and Pandora from Adrian Mole liked him. I wasn’t even able to vote until Blair’s first election and I’m not copping to anything from that point on.

      • Sixer says:

I just made 1992! I think you double-whammied me there, mon compere. I might have to sulk.

      • T.Fanty says:

Well, I’d like to take this opportunity and say that I’m very happy you made 1992 and beyond. A Sixer-less world would be a poorer place.

      • Sixer says:

I think they call that a technical knockout!

*goes off to find Eve’s stock of spare shanks*

Love you really, as Second Son says after a foot-stamping over something.

    • LadySlippers says:

      Ummmm.. *shuffles nervously*

      Who’s Tony Benn?

      • Sixer says:

Octogenarian hero of the British political left. Renounced a peerage to become an MP.

      • T.Fanty says:

        The last great socialist:

        http://www.tonybenn.com

He was (is?) a Labour MP from the 70s and 80s, who represents the last bastion of what the Labour party used to stand for.

      • LadySlippers says:

Thanks Sixer. As you can see, I’m not a Brit…

        Renounced a peerage? Dayum!

      • T.Fanty says:

        @ LadySlippers,

Lots of people do not accept honors on political grounds. Danny Boyle just did it, and I think one of the Beatles did, too.

      • j.eyre says:

John Lennon gave his MBE back as protest to the Vietnam war.

      • Sixer says:

Tony did a bit more than say no. The law of the land had to be changed after he refused to become Viscount Stansgate. (Otherwise he would have been stuck in the House of Lords).

      • LadySlippers says:

Declining certain honours, I totally understand, as a great many do decline. However, a peerage is a while ‘nother beast.

        WOW

      • Sixer says:

LS – if you get a moment, look up the story on Wikipedia. It is quite amazing, whatever you think of his politics.

      • LadySlippers says:

Sixer — I did look it up (I’m kinda a history geek) and recall reading about him. Still a very bold thing to do.

      • Sixer says:

I did a big project on the whole thing as the springboard for the Peerage Act for one of my A levels years ago. It would make a fantastic film: the brother dying in WWII, the election in which everyone voted for the guy they knew would be disbarred from taking his seat; the guy who came second but became the MP taking on something else that disbars you from the Commons as soon as the act was passed so Benn could get there in the end.

        I love the whole story!

  2. Anna says:

I like those Little Favour photos. He gives nice face there.

  3. Eve says:

“Is it funny to anyone else that Cumby is playing some badass special forces dude who karate chops people?”

Not really. I thought his action scenes in STiD were pretty convincing.

    • LadySlippers says:

I agree Eve. I did not care for STID but the fight scenes between Khan and Spock were very athletic.

    • T.Fanty says:

Yes, but he was CumberKahn there. Here, he just looks like regular Cumby being forced (unsuccessfully) to defend his last chambray shirt.

    • Vesta says:

LAST chambray shirt? I wouldn’t put my money on that.

      • T.Fanty says:

I just assumed that was the only reason he would actually risk getting that glorious face bloodied. The bastards took it, though.

Or maybe this is simply an enactment of what Wanda has to go through every Tuesday night when she needs to do his laundry.

      • Leah says:

Well, he can’t help it! It’s just not the same after she washes it! He has to get it all worn in again and it doesn’t smell right! And nothing else looks as good with his purple jeans and cool stripped shoes… all the other kids said so!

      • T.Fanty says:

You think that got ugly? Wait until she wants to get the hair dye stains out of his linen newsboy cap.

@ Leah – when the “other kids” is TommyAnne in his pimpin jacket, it doesn’t count.

      • LadySlippers says:

No no no! He’s not fighting for shirts. He’s defending the perimeters of Thornfield people! We delicate ladies (and hedgehogs) need to be protected!!! Geez, remember, he IS a gentleman. (and tommy is our requisite fool)

      • Leah says:

HA! If I could actually SPELL it might help (oh my. Although, Cumby could totally rock some stripper shoes- he’s got the legs for it!)

Oh dear. Here we go with Cumby getting jealous of the pimpin’ jackets. The gauntlet has been thrown!

      • j.eyre says:

Oh dear LadySlippers – it has been a while since you have been to Thornfield, hasn’t it? We haven’t had a “delicate lady” in these parts since EsCon had la grippe.

And the boys aren’t fighting to keep out intruders, they are trying to escape.

      • LadySlippers says:

        *clears throat*

Ummm… I’m in charge of propaganda (self-appointed) and it would never do to have the truth revealed. Thus, my original story stands.

Also am great at fund-raiding ideas. See posts yesterday. 😉

*hope no one notices that I’ve invited myself to the party*

      • T.fanty says:

You and your delicate footwear are welcome. But if you’re putting together any press releases, I prefer to go by my full title, which is Arch Duchess of the Drawing Room, HRH of Hedgehogs, Queen Cumberbitch Fantomina.

      • j.eyre says:

LadySlippers – what do you mean you invited yourself? Did the Arch Duchess of Oh Hey Shiny Object forget to send you yours?

Honesty Fanty – I have half a mind to untie Cumberbatch until you get your head about you!

Now, if you will excuse me, LadySlippers, I am going to put some clothes on, give CHemboy a penguin toy to entertain him in my stead and see to tea for you. I am positively scarlet over the matter of you being overlooked like that.

      • Vesta says:

@T.Fanty, I’m sure you meant your full title is “…Queen Cumberbitch Fanoftommmyanneina”. Royals have long names.

      • EscapedConvent says:

It’s really just *too* sad that Cumby does not see this post & these comments. I could weep.

Cumby & his Mummy should both be reading this.

& I appreciate the comments re: my delicacy. I know I have been monopolizing the fainting couch & the smelling salts. It started out as a carb-free diet, but has turned into consumption. Please don’t hate me.

  4. Abby says:

Lol sometimes Cameron can have good taste, he liked BC’s performance and Breaking Bad. Also if you guys watch the video…Cameron mispronounces Cumberbatch…said Cumberhatch instead and reporter had to correct him hehehe

So far those who have seen the movie (normal people) are saying the film is OK at best but it’s BC’s astounding performance that uplifts it altogether. Also some praised the chemistry between Daniel and BC….gahhh I am so watching it no matter how bad reviews it gets.

    • LadySlippers says:

Cameron really f’ed up Benedict’s last name?!? God that must get annoying for him….

      • Abby says:

Lol yea he did. I mean common it’s not even that hard to pronounce. The way he said I saw some of it…I doubt he even saw any of it, talked so vaguely about it.

      • Abby says:

Lol yea he did. I mean common it’s not even that hard to pronounce. The way he said I saw some of it…I doubt he even saw any of it..he talked so vaguely about it.

    • Vesta says:

@Abby – it sounds that Cameron’s approval isn’t quite the kiss of death I feared it might be…

I don’t think that as a foreigner I am capable to properly weigh the situation, BUT as a tennis follower I happen to remember too well how David C used to jinx poor Andy Murray several times. (It’s OT but still…)

      • Abby says:

I truly hope it’s NOT a kiss of death. I mean he has the right to appreciate good things too.

His liking for breaking bad never made people stop watching/appreciating breaking bad either…so it’s all cool I guess.

  5. LadySlippers says:

The new trailer is rather yummy.

And I could so imagine Benedict in restraints. So he’s not a very compliant sub, eh???

    • T.Fanty says:

      Cumby in chains?

*drifts off to my happy place…..*

      • LadySlippers says:

        @T.Fanty

        I had him in leather….

      • T.Fanty says:

Does it go without saying that I’d have him in either? Or both?

But he’d still have to wear the TIFF bow tie.

      • LadySlippers says:

Oh yes….*breathlessly* Bow ties. And cute boxers. For some reason, they are always cute…

      • T.Fanty says:

Sure. I’d let him wear the boxers. Absolutely. That’s completely my plan.

      • curlsunited says:

I’m in, ladies. Budge up, please.

But no to the boxers. The picture of Cumby wearing a pair of boxer shorts in “The Last Enemy” is etched in my retina and memory forever. The bow tie will do nicely.

      • LadySlippers says:

Oh okay Curls, I’ll scoot. But not happily. And only cuz I like you.

And Benedict is in boxers in the ‘The Last Enemy’? And it’s not good?!? I’m imagining his body like this past summer — post Khan. Pre-Khan isn’t bad tho… But a tad scrawny for me.

Love the bow tie…. *drools just a bit*

      • curlsunited says:

@LadyS: Sorry for being late (I was forced to murder about 500 innocent words because some f*ing freelance writer mixed up quantity and quality).

        * wipes blood-stained knife *

Where was I? Boxer shorts. Nothing wrong with the lithe Cumberbody, but the boxers were just HUGE and unflattering. I sighed a sigh of relief when he took them off :-).

Goodness, Cumby looked so young and cute in “Last Enemy”, I wanted to pinch his cheeks. Face and bottom.

Is the bow tie still in play?

      • curlsunited says:

Apologies again. I just read below that SOME people faint at the sight of blood. How blooming thoughtless of me.

      • T.Fanty says:

Is it just me or does anyone else REALLY want to lock curls in a room with TommyAnne and shout “Shakesepeare!” before closing the door? Just to see how brutal she can be?

      • Vesta says:

        @T.Fanty @curls

I occasionally take a peek of that witches’ cauldron of a Hiddleston thread, so in general I understand this urge to take advantage of Curls’ many skills, but I’m afraid I won’t let anybody to do that to her…

Curls is still experiencing the worst hangover ever she gained from those private Last Enemy drinking games she’s beeen playing. I know her rule is to take a sip of red wine every time an indecent thought comes to her mind, and it was 5 hours of Cumby – SHAVED & ORIGINAL AUBURN EDITION. So I have ordered Curls to take it easy until new Benepix (he should have an Asterix character btw) arrive to invigorate her.

      • curlsunited says:

@Vesta: My dear, you know me so well …
        * hangs head in shame and reaches for hangover cures *

  6. Leah says:

The AMA Reddit terrifies me. Go with caution, Cumby! Remember that sarcasm sometimes doesn’t translate well into the written word!

Seriously, I feel like we’re going to need a prayer circle, support circle, alcohol stash, or therapy after this. Or a drinking game!!

Who wants to come up with the AMA Cumby Reddit drinking game?

Is he going to have a handler? They aren’t just going to turn him loose, are they? Good grief. Can you ramble on a Reddit?

    • T.Fanty says:

One shot for each run-on sentence.

      • Leah says:

We’ll be drunk within the first 15 minutes!

Shot for 3 syllable word he casually drops

Sip for every “good friend” in the industry he drops

      • T.Fanty says:

Oh my god. “Good friends” alone is going to get me drunk.

Chug an entire beer if he manages to get his Olivier award in there.

      • LadySlippers says:

One shot for a run-on sentence?!? Geez girl, some if us can’t hold our liquor well. HAVE mercy!!!!

      • T.Fanty says:

AND, you have to suck it from a straw for the same length of time it takes you to read his reply.

      • Eve says:

“AND, you have to suck it from a straw for the same length of time it takes you to read his reply.”

I suspect you’re outright trying to get everyone killed.

      • Anna says:

        Challenge accepted!
Also, I could beat him in the longest run-on sentence contest as well. It’s sort of a Russian specialty.

      • j.eyre says:

oh dear lord – let me eat a few Big Macs to line my stomach and I’m in; but only if I get to pick my own prize.

      • Green Girl says:

Should we take a shot for every time someone asks him how Sherlock survived, or what the deal is with John’s mustache?

    • Vesta says:

Do I hear the word drinking game?
I AM IN. It’s the most efficient form of therapy anyway.

But seriously though, this AMA Reddit scares and excites me at the same time. I wonder how much Cumby really uses Reddit… at least I find it WAY too chaotic.

      • Leah says:

I think inebriation will probably make it more bearable.

I’m not very familiar with Reddit, either. I’m sort of hoping it goes both ways- I don’t want him to be a boring automaton, but at the same time, I’m hoping he makes it through without inadvertently pissing off the whole of the internet. Oh der.

      • LadySlippers says:

Nonetheless, count me in as well.

*fishes through sparse liquor cabinet & resolves to stock up*

    • Tish says:

Remember the four publicists/ handlers he has at TIFF? I bet they’ll all circle around him during the AMA. And I don’t think he’ll type his answers himself either.

      • T.Fanty says:

Poor Emily the PA. We need to send her some heated gloves for her poor fingers, having to transcribe whatever our darling boy spews out.

      • Leah says:

Towards the end of it, all of the sudden Cumby starts giving one-word answers… behind the scenes footage is released of Cumby waxing philosophical about his acting process/hair/eating habits but all the internet saw was: “yes.” Meanwhile, Emily the PA is taking shots through straws.

      • T.Fanty says:

We’ll know this is true when the final answer is:

Did you know I got a first at Cambridge? I used to have a real job, and a life, and a boyfriend, and now I get my drunk uncle into cabs and I’m not allowed to drive the jaguar that granny promised would be mine. Oh, and he totally shagged the Russian.

      • Leah says:

She would totally own the internet, at that point. And then reveal that Cumby loves The Notebook and is still pissed he wasn’t “big” enough at the time to be in the Harry Potter series.

Whatever his Reddit turns out to be, this will forever be how I imagine it going. Emily the long-suffering PA and verbose DUC.

      • T.fanty says:

What will really sting is when he makes her write out sentences about how hard he’s finding all the typing.

      • Leah says:

After that, she’d passively aggressively start misspelling things on purpose… and completely throw away grammar- to, too, two? They’re, there, their? I don’t think so!

She’d slip into chat speak when Cumby tries to insert a Shakespeare reference

      • Green Girl says:

I was just coming here to comment on the AMA that is sure to be an entertaining debacle.

Ever since I learned what DUC was, I have been hoping that poor Emily always retaliates the next morning by telling him what everyone is saying about him on Tumblr. You know how he talks in detail about the JohnLock fanfiction? I am convinced she’s the one telling him what’s being said online.

      • EscapedConvent says:

I would think it would be very Cumbersome to type on tiny keys with those giant hands.

      • curlsunited says:

@Green Girl: I am convinced that he knows there is a Google button and he will use it.

      • T.Fanty says:

        @ GreenGirl:

I hope she sneaks into his house and whispers it at night, then acts all innocent the next day when he asks about it, so he thinks he’s going crazy. Now I’m going to have to start calling her Mrs. Danvers.

      • Vesta says:

@EsCon, Cumby does NOT have giant hands. His long finger are very delicate. Just like your mind, you little saint woman!

  7. Lindy79 says:

He’s filming Graham Norton today (*or yesterday) and arrived straight from set on the back of a motorbike. He’s fangirling over Harrison Ford apparently.

    Friday cannot come quickly enough.

    • curlsunited says:

We all knew he would be fangirling about Harrison Ford (there were some GIFs on tumblr like two weeks ago). Our sweet darling raves just about everyone he worked with or saw on TV, bless him.

    • Sixer says:

      He’s on Graham Norton? Ooh.

      • Abby says:

He already filmed it yesterday. From what I heard on tumblr….he came an hour late as he was shooting till 7:30 an said that he even changed into a suit while sitting behind the bike lol.

He fangirled over Harrison, Harrison also fangirled over him which made BC emotional and very close to crying.

Then Jack Whitehall fangirled over Sherlock and told BC to show his Cum face hahaha.

BC did an impression of Chewbacca as well. There was a discussion about BC and James Blunt studying in the same school as well.

So yea overall everyone enjoyed an thought it was funny.

Lastly, BC and Harrison both avoided answering questioned regarding Star Wars.

      • Lindy79 says:

Yep, airing this Friday but filmed mid week. He must be flying out to the US today/tomorrow as I’ve heard he’s on Jimmy Fallon on Friday and some other NY morning shows.

        Lots of new Cumbers Clips.
There’s also an interview with Olivia in the Standard promoting her new play. It pretty much sums up my feeling, that it’s been 2 years and she and he are still being asked about it but she is lovely about him, so that’s nice anyway.

      • T.Fanty says:

I hope Jimmy Fallon does more with him than he did last time. Some of Jimmy’s games are quite fun, and Cumby seems like he’d be game for anything.

      • LadySlippers says:

Thanks Lindy79 for the Olivia tip. She seemed a bit perturbed by the BC question. Did you get that vibe too?

(BTW I am not saying she isn’t justified in that feeling. And she was very nice about answering)

      • Lindy79 says:

I agree, it sounded like she half expects it but doesn’t really get why it’s *still* coming up, which is kind of the impression you get from BC too. They’ll answer politely but really, who apart from Katy Perry talks about an ex they broke up with 2 years previously, it even says she is dating someone else.

      • Green Girl says:

Jimmy has gotten so entertaining to me in recent years, so I have high hopes for this. And I agree that Cumby seems laid-back and willing to poke fun at himself, which goes a long way.

    • Vesta says:

Is there a possibility we get some new Cumby on a motorbike pictures?

      LET IT BE SO.

      • T.Fanty says:

Please, because I still don’t believe he has a proper bike. I’m convinced that AT MOST, it’s a purple Vespa that he’s using to pass himself off as a biker. When paps are around, he high-tails it to the nearest Kawasaki he can find and makes sure they get the shot.

      • ag-UK says:

Honda CBF something or other looks similar to a Ducati

      • Vesta says:

@T.Fanty – You know (at least now) very well I don’t give a flying fig about the bike. It’s just that particular bike driving position I’m interested in. I’m measuring his angles etc. etc. One must always prepare for the future challenges… *stretches legs*

      • T.Fanty says:

        Hm. Inneresting…

        *volunteers to be the bike*

      • Janey says:

From old pictures, it does seem to be a proper motor bike and not a souped up moped, Wanda makes him a wear a high-vis vest, which spoils the effect.

      • Vesta says:

Is somebody here hinting that Cumby may not be the most badass Hells Angel I always imagined he would be?

    • Tish says:

There was a dumb/hilarious article entitled “Oh no! Cameron likes Benedict Cumberbatch!” on the Independent yesterday. Haha. After Graham Norton I expect something like “Oh no! Harrison Ford likes Benedict Cumberbatch (he’s cool again)!”

  8. Shw says:

Knob off Cameron and leave my Cumby alone. Your attempts to be cool just make you look more out of touch. Go Home.

Booked my tickets to see Fifth Estate after work on Friday with one of my minions. Cannot wait!

  9. Tish says:

He once talked to a mass rally sponsored by the TUC. You can search youtube for that.

  10. ag-UK says:

Did anyone see the comments from that article in the Guardian. Random people I know but BC didn’t have the love that he gets here.

  11. Allison says:

GAH! Now I have to figure out how to use Reddit? Can’t it just be on Twitter? Well, then he’d be limited to 140 characters, and that defeats the purpose of the Cumbermouth. Fine, Reddit it is. But he better be unsupervised.

Apparently the 12 Years a Slave premiere happened in NYC last night. No Cumby that I’ve seen.

Motorbike pics. Now. They have to exist.

    • Lucrezia says:

I like to think the Cumbermouth has other purposes, and can not be defeated easily.

    • Maureen says:

Motorbike pics. I have never, ever seen one. 🙁

      • Shw says:

He rides a motorbike in the Miss Marple he did.its on you tube & it’s called ‘murder is easy.’

      • Maureen says:

I was referring to in his real life. I assume it’s the only way he can get about unnoticed (helmet and all) and that’s why the paps don’t catch him.

  12. SolitaryAngel says:

My desktop wallpaper is a lovely mouthwatering photo of Cumby lying wet and naked on his stomach. That trumps any bad movie review EVER. 🙂

  13. MissMary says:

I have a bad feeling about the Reddit AMA… Mainly because if he doesn’t have a handler, it’s all “OMG MARRY ME OMG ARE YOU DATING ANYONE OMG UR SO UGLY!” type shit. And sarcasm does NOT translate via internet usually, so he may come off as extra douchey with a side of douche if he gets defensive.

    • Leah says:

That’s honestly my biggest fear. Someone is eventually going to step on his toes and he’s going to respond negatively/defensively, and it’ll go down hill.

On the other hand… it seems other celebs have survived this, and Cumby seems to keep a decent sense of humor. He must realize what he’s in for??

Is it hope or denial that I cling to?

      • MissMary says:

I know he’s a grown man with at least a passing familiarity with the internet but I still cringe in advance of this AMA, lol.

    • gogoGorilla says:

Actually, some of the AMAs on Reddit have been excellent. There’s not usually a lot of crap like that. I think the best ones are when the person is actually answering the questions him/herself and not having a handler do it.

      I think he’ll be fine.

    • Katie says:

He’ll be fine. His PR and studio PR will be there and AMA actually moderates pretty well.

You’ve got to remember that Reddit has a vested interest in these going well. They don’t want to drive celebs away from AMA and lose all those valuable press and traffic ops.

  14. Coco says:

I’m on the minority here but I don’t see his appealing. He is a great actor of course, but there’s something about his face that creeps me out.

  15. Maureen says:

Why is it bad that Cameron is a Benedict fan?? Anyone can be a fan of anyone they like, yes? I’m picking up the scent of something unpleasant here. Is it because Cameron “leans right” that he shouldn’t be allowed the privilege of enjoying Benedict’s work? That can’t be right, right? Because that seems a bit intolerant (“I don’t like your politics, so you can’t like my favorite actor”) and surely the open-minded liberal fans here would not be so intolerant.

    • Vesta says:

@Maureen, I don’t necessarily feel it’s Cameron’s political orientation that is the issue here. I tend to think that the sitting PM in a weak economical situation isn’t going to be the most loved person whichever direction he/she is leaning to.
IMO the only exception would be Benedict of course. They should make him the PM of the whole wide world, and he could tax me until I have only underwear left, and after that I would gladly give those to him too…

    • Sixer says:

I don’t think it’s a left/right or party thing, Maureen. The current administration hates Assange. But the previous one did, too. Even more, probably, since it was led by an arch liberal interventionist and domestic surveillance advocate.

No administration likes a security/defence whistleblower. More so in the age of the War on Terror. Cameron was stuck with commenting on a high profile film starring a British actor (the PM has to talk those up, Britain is making a lot of money from this industry) about a contentious topic that potentially shines a poor light on Britain and its allies (the PM has to talk that down).

He’d have been better to try to ensure that the question wasn’t asked so he didn’t have to say anything at all. It’s not as though anyone gives the chuff from a flying monkey about Cameron’s film critiques; the question was asked to make him squirm and hedge his film critic bets enough to look foolish. Which is pretty much what he did.

      • Vesta says:

This is very enlightening, and not just for non-Britishers (like me), but in general. Thank you.

  16. Vesta says:

All the blood in that trailer just makes me feel faint, but still I can’t help but think that he looks… literally bloody HOT there too.

And if we put his hotness aspects aside, I say this is more naked action than in STiD, and I find this new raw side of his acting fascinating. More please.

    • LadySlippers says:

      @Vesta

Totally agree. *hops into cold shower*

    • EscapedConvent says:

I can’t bear to see him getting punched. & bloody. It’s painful to see. I will watch Little Favour with a pillowcase over my eyes.

      • Vesta says:

I’ll use a pillowcase too. I usually have a low pain threshold for watching violence, but now I’m experiencing this very contradictional desire to see more of Cumby the action man. He’s damaging me…

  17. Faith says:

Cameron needs to shut up and stopping ruining Cumberbatch for me. I can’t tell if I hate him because he’s bad at his job or just because he is a Tory maybe a bit of both.

    • Maureen says:

And this is why I asked my previous question.

      Wow, just WOW.

      • Faith says:

I know hardly the most mature the majority of the time I am democratic and tolerent. Then it comes to politics and it changes I can’t explain it nor am I ashamed of it, I think that in most factors you can’t help the way you are but politics you choose.

      • Harriet says:

But you should be ashamed of it, Faith.

  18. icerose says:

Well that’s pretty much put the kiss of death on the film just when it look liked it might have rallied a bit. It was all pretty predictable and nothing I would not have expected Cameron to say. Just convinces me that any thoughts of putting it on my must see films are to be ignored. I think Benny should try his hand at comedy next. It might widen his acting range.

    • Van says:

Are you familiar with the radio comedy Cabin Pressure, Icerose? Or Starter for 10?

In any case, Benedict has said he wants to do a romantic comedy sometime in the near future.

  19. Kate says:

Assange is the opposite of twitchy, so that doesn’t bode well.

  20. LadySlippers says:

Ladies!!! Look, Benny is giving us permission to restrain him! *jumps for joy*

    • T.Fanty says:

I’m not entirely sure about that. I think you’re misreading the dynamic, and getting it the wrong way around (which is also totally fine with me, for the record).

      • LadySlippers says:

        Your Majesty,

I would like to kindly remind you that I am the Mistress of Propaganda and he is *clearly* dangling said restraints for us to use.

        Very Respectfully,

        Madame LadySlippers

  21. Bee says:

This makes me think Cumby might become Sir Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch soon.
