‘Mad Men’ does its final NYC premiere event: bittersweet or boring?

Intellectually, I know why AMC and Matthew Weiner wanted to split up the final season of Mad Men, but I can’t help but think that they actually let it wait for too long. It feels like it’s been YEARS since we saw the first half of the final season, and I can barely remember what happened ahead the final episodes. The last half of the last season premieres on April 5th. Less than two weeks away!

I’m sure the Mad Men epitaphs and think-pieces will be flowing like water in the coming weeks, which is probably why they held a big premiere event last night in NYC. These are the photos from the premiere, although it doesn’t look like Kiernan Skipka made it out. Nor did Vincent Kartheiser. Damn, does Pete Campbell die?! I’m sure these photos will accompany at least a dozen pieces about the end of Mad Men. What did it all mean? Does Dick Whitman still exist, or was he drowned in a vat of liquor? Was it always really Peggy’s story and not Don Draper’s? Does Charles Manson kill Megan Draper? If you’re really a Mad Men-aholic, THR did a cover story on the show a few weeks ago – go here to read.

As you can see, all of the actors finished with Mad Men months ago. They’re already moving on, emotionally and physically. Christina Hendricks and Elisabeth Moss have both lightened their hair, to varying degrees of success. I think Moss looks better with lighter hair, while I find Christina’s lighter strawberry blonde shade to be very disconcerting. January Jones had pink hair a few weeks ago, but I guess it washed out because she looks the same as usual here. January’s dress is Preen. Elisabeth wore J.Mendel. Christina wore… I don’t have the ID, but it looks like Vivienne Westwood to me.

I’m also including photos of Jon Hamm and Jon Slattery. I can’t help it, I love both of them. If it’s between Roger and Don, I have to admit… I kind of hope Don dies. I don’t want to live in a world where Roger isn’t making pithy, sarcastic observations.

I am waiting for netflix so I can watch the whole last season without a huge break between. I hope I can avoid spoilers because I truly love this show.

    • Lori says:

I hate this breaking a season in half bolognie that so many cable shows are doing. HATE IT! just play all 13 episodes consecutively and let me have a life.

      • ozmom says:

UGH, right? I don’t know if I’ll even watch because I’ve moved on to other shows.

  2. Ellie66 says:

I do not remember the first 7 episodes and I’m not sure if I can get back into it. The wait was to long Its like I don’t care anymore but I still want to watch just to finish it and to see the clothes. 😉

    • Sarah says:

The 7 episodes last year were not good. The only thing I can remember is being annoyed with Megan (duh) and somewhat hopeful that she was gone, only to have it ruined with cast stills from these last 7. She’s still there. The other remembrance is the sweet dance with Don and Peggy. Otherwise, forgettable.

  3. BengalCat2000 says:

I wondered if they split the season up so they would pull in some awards after the Breaking Bad finale, which, deserved them all, Imo.
I haven’t really liked Mad Men in years, but I will tune in.

  4. GlimmerBunny says:

Christina’s haircolour isn’t that great but DAMN that dress (= her body) is amazing!

    • Lori says:

I find her so beautiful. I think she should have gone full blonde if she wanted to try it. Not half measures. I hope she gets on another good TV show, I’ll miss seeing her. Maybe Shonda Rhimes will snag her up.

    • kibbles says:

To me, Christina’s body is perfection. She has the body that Kim Kardashian spent hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to achieve. I never believed that Christina had breast implants. I think her body is naturally curvy and beautiful. I hate it when I see people fat shaming her as if she is anywhere near fat.

      • Isabelle says:

Men like her (have guy friends that drool over her) & when she is onscreen won’t take their eyes off of her. Seems women fat shame her more than men.

  5. Tania says:

This show went on at least 3 seasons too long. I couldn’t even get through the first episode of this past season, I was so bored.

  6. Michelle says:

I love this show, but the first episodes of season 7 were awful. I really hope they can turn it all around for the second-half. Sad to see it go because I think this is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.

  7. dr mantis toboggan says:

It just seemed unnecessary and annoying to have such a long break in the middle of the final season. I feel like I’ve forgotten the first half too, but I don’t wanna have to go back and watch it again.
I predict Don will die, although I certainly got Manson family vibes from Megan’s storyline.
I love Roger too, he’s so funny.

    • oneshot says:

Battlestar Galactica did the same thing five years ago and got screwed over because the writers’ strike happened in the break between the two halves of their last season (as in, people got into accidents, there was major rewriting of storylines etc).

So yeah, I understand if Mad Men fans are not optimistic.

  8. minx says:

I love the show and will miss it when it is finally over.
And yes, I was irritated with the season breaks.

  9. Santolina says:

Who wants to watch the second half of the final season when you know it’s going to be massively depressing? Of course, someone is going to die. It’s like waiting for the other shoe to drop. Thanks for creating nothing but a giant funeral to anticpate, Weiner, you weiner.

  10. Murphy says:

I just started watching the first half of season 7 since it came out on Netflix yesterday and I have to say…Pete Campbell all happy (bc he’s alone in Cali) is extremely weird. I kind of like it but its really weird.

  11. Thinker says:

I will miss this show, especially these three ladies. What Weiner did was create interesting, complicated, female characters – on a show that was supposed to be about men, the women stood out. I’ve enjoyed watching all of them grow through the sixties and into the seventies. They will be missed.

  12. lila fowler says:

I think they split the season because they knew that they stood no chance last year against Breaking Bad and True Detective. They still don’t have a prayer because the show is BORING. Plus OITNB is now in Drama and you can’t forget House of Cards, Game of Thrones, etc.

  13. GPS says:

Weiner did *not* want to split the final season; that was strictly AMC’s call and Weiner was very open with his unhappiness about the decision.

  14. Dawn says:

I hope this show ends well. It so deserves to. And I really have to say I am like January Jones on her new series Last Man on Earth. Man that show is funny.

  15. Kelly says:

Great pics!! Going to miss the show, watching Season 7 now on Netflix!

  16. Grace says:

I love January Jones outfit. She finally got her fashion mojo back. The other girls look great too except Elizabeth Moss hair. Yuck. It must be for a project she is working on.
