And to whomever is unlucky enough to get them you have my deepest sympathies. Missionaries have a poor reputation of pushing their religion before real help so it doesn’t shock me these two are going.
Yeah, if you ever want to watch something horrific, find the VICE episode about what the Christian missionaries have wrought in Uganda and the horrible abuse, discrimination and full-on demonization of gays. (VICE runs on HBO, so assume it’s available on HBO Go). I saw it about a month or so ago, and it’s stayed with me ever since. So of course these idiots arrogantly think they should go push their beliefs on people who may truly need help, but not this kind of help.

Or this is a plan to get a show about their work overseas … you know, a reality show about helping out people in the third world. And with a contract independent of Jim Boob.

1. Derick, PLEASE don’t let Jill cut your hair anymore. It looks beyond ridiculous, especially when everyone knows that you can afford to go to the barber.
2. Why quit your job with benefits and then ask your fans/the public to fund your mission trip, if you can’t afford to do it right now?
3. Why won’t you say where you are going? Why is it a big secret that can’t be divulged?
4. Can this just be a one-way trip, please? I will gladly contribute money if it means you’ll go away and never come back again.
I was thinking good for them to get away from the Duggars, I didn’t know they were asking for money.
I kind of think if people are looking for Jesus they can probably find him without all of the missionaries. I never understood the missionary role. I mean they come in like santa clause with treats, shoes, etc, tell them about Jesus then leave? How really is this an impact in their life. If anyone knows tell me because I have a cousin who goes to Hondurus every summer and for the life of me I can’t figure out why.
I have some of those in my family, too. My take on it has always been donations for missionary work = free vacation to exotic location to which the “missionary” could not otherwise afford to travel. Bonus for them is that when they come back to their home church, they get lots of petting and sucking up to for being a “missionary” and “sharing their gifts” and blahblahblah.
My cousin is a missionary and rather unfortunately that part of the family has views and ways that are slightly like that of Quiverful. Anyway, he’s been in India for over 2 years now with his wife and 2 children as a missionary. He helps teach at one of the schools there. And from what I’ve seen and heard it’s not exactly a vacation for them. They live in a very poor dangerous part of the town they are in. I’m not sure how it is with other people’s missonary work, but it doesn’t seem like it’s all fun and games from the stories I’ve heard.
I’ve known a few missionaries/met them…..and yea. None of the ones I know are in the lap of luxury. They generally live in the dangerous parts of the towns they’re in–or at least near them. And their work affects their parishioners…..one missionary I know who’s in Mexico right now has talked about how a gang kidnapped the brother of one of his new converts (pretty much because he went from being Catholic to Baptist) and holding him for ransom.
And yes, all the missionaries I know teach English……
But I’m wondering what these fools version of missionary work is. And with how much money their parents get from that stupid show, they can’t help their kid/in law out with paying for the visas, etc?
The missionaries I’ve known live in very poor communities and they either pastor a church, teach at a school or work in a hospital. They live on very little, having a similar standard of living as their neighbors, learn the culture/language and eschew Western-like materialism.
Along with helping with practical needs they do teach from the Bible and talk about Jesus. That’s the main reason they’re there. They’re not nutjobs like the Duggers and they actually do good work and it’s not uncommon for them to get involved in dangerous situations, since they’re in areas of the world where the police are either corrupt or non-existent.
Yeah, these ‘mission trips’ are just tax-deductible vacations to sunny places. There are little to no long-term benefits to these trips because if the infrastructure in these countries actually improved, church people wouldn’t have an excuse to go on mission/vacations there anymore!

I have never been a fan of SE Cupps, but watching her tear up, made me tear up. I appreciate her urging her party to be more open, accepting, and affirming of gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgender (did I leave anyone out?) My sister, who is a good 10 years younger than me, is a Republican, but she is also for gay rights and believes gay marriage should be a right gay people should have should they want it. I think a lot of younger Republicans feel very similarly, and it is refreshing to see.
Cupps is in the wrong party if she wants acceptance and love for anybody but rich, straight, white Christian males.
Wrong. I am a Republican who strongly advocates for gay rights and gay marriage among other “stay out of my personal business” issues.

I wish them well. I had never watched the Duggars, but when the scandal broke, I looked up episodes on Youtube. Jill and Derrick always wanted to work overseas, so this is no surprise. I’m not crazy about their pushing religion on others, but if they can help people through humanitarian work, I have no problem with it. They seem like sincere and compassionate people. (Or maybe I was just brainwashed after watching too many episodes?)
Their goal is to go over there and convert people to their fundamentalist Christianity and for them to seek repentance. That’s what is in her blog.
I don’t feel that they are going to do humanitarian work. I feel that they are going to go to some poverty-stricken, overpopulated country and try to persuade the people not to use birth control.

Missionary work gives me a rage stroke. It is NOT humanitarian, it is a thinly-veiled attempt to convert the poor/uneducated.
It works like this…people fly to poor countries to build houses, dig wells, whatever. Well guess what? With the money it costs to send these people you could HIRE locals from these downtrodden areas that have SKILLS and could therefore construct better houses, and dig better wells. The money would go WAAAAYYYY further and the people would be way better off using their skilled labour than receiving a hand out. So why don’t they send the money to hire locals to do the work instead of sending groups on expensive flights to do things they aren’t qualified to do? Because it is not about helping AT ALL. It is about spreading the religion that is all.
I have yet to see a religion that actually does all the good they say they do. They are all talk and do the barest of the bare charity work and really just line the pockets of the church.
Religions should lose their tax exempt status. The money from the taxes could be spent by the government on various charities. The churches shouldn’t complain if that was the case since they are supposed to do ‘good works’ but of course they WOULD complain because that truly isn’t what they want the money for.
Derek, her husband, before they met was on a mission for two years in Nepal. It consisted of building churches to convert them to Christianity.
