Jenny McCarthy dyed her hair fuchsia: striking or trashy?

Just know going into this that it’s summer and slim pickings for gossip. I assume Jenny McCarthy is well aware of this and took advantage of a lull in entertainment news to “shock” us all with her bold hair choice. So here’s Jenny McCarthy, 42, after having dyed her hair from blonde to a very bright permanent pink color. She explained in a groundbreaking Today Show interview that she came up with the idea and followed through with it because she’s “still at that age I can get away with it.” She’s also promoting the second season of her Donnie Loves Jenny reality show, which is really why she did it.

Jenny has been married to Donnie for two years, which is surprising to me. I expected them to hit their expiration date sooner than this, especially since they’re doing reality television. Here’s some of what Jenny said on The Today Show.

On her new pink hair
This morning I woke up and I said, I’m feeling pink… this is something I’ve wanted to do forever… I figured I’m still at that age I can get away with it. I showed (Donnie) this morning and he said ‘you look beautiful.’

On how she’s addicted to Donnie
We make out everywhere. We really are addicted to each other. I think about him all day long still. When [we are] on the road, we Facetime sleep. He’s on the pillow [on the phone] I sleep and I hear him snore.

I might assume that Jenny dyed her hair because she’s having issues with Donnie but she had him on her damn phone over Facetime during her interview on the Today Show! Here’s a photo of Jenny showing Donnie to the audience. He explained that he was busy filming Blue Bloods and then proceeded to fawn over Jenny. “I’m missing my gorgeous wife and her magical pink hair.” So all the crap Jenny was spewing about their amazing relationship is true for him too. He was pretty much gushing about her and said they’re perfect for each other. She then tried to kiss the phone.

Every time I’ve done something radical with my hair it’s been the result of guy trouble. My hairdresser has so many stories of talking women out of crazy dye jobs and short cuts when they’re trying to spite a guy. Jenny, on the other hand, has a sycophantic hairdresser, or at least one who jumps when called. US Magazine has an interview with Jenny’s hairdresser, and he said that Jenny texted him at 1:00 am and summoned him to come over at 5:00. They called it a “custom couture color,” which is ridiculous. She also joked about dyeing the carpet to match the drapes. Give me a break. They called this color “hot bitch pink”. I mean, it looks very bold I’ll give her that.

Thank you to my amazing hair & makeup team this morning! 💕 @juliusmichael1 & @mspriscillanyc

  1. Naddie says:

Terrible. She doesn’t have a good skin and the pink shows it more.

    • Mary says:

Exactly what I was going to say Naddie. The color really highlights the sun damage.

    • Krista says:

Exactly what I was going to say. It brings out all the pink in her face. Not a good look for her.

    • mytbean says:

Plus aging Barbie make-up. I don’t think there is an age cut-off for fun hair color if done right but this makes her skin look bad and her hair look fried.

      • Miffy says:

Key term being ‘if done right.’ You’re very right. There’s no age limit, Vivienne Westwood had an orange perm for how long? And she rocked it. But this? No, it’s a poor execution. It was allegedly spur of the moment and it looks every inch a spur of the moment decision.

      • NeoCleo says:

I agree with you mytbean that it does need to be “done right.” One of my friends is in her sixties and has beautiful silver/gray hair. She has a deep purple streak in the front and it looks great on her.

      • Meara says:

She should have asked Guy Tang to do her hair. He would have made her look fierce.

      • katie says:

I’m 51 and have actually been thinking of doing my hair this color for about a month. 😀

    • Joy says:

Yes. I love this color but on her it’s a withered old crone look. Now in her Instagram picture that she’s filtered to death it looks better.

    • Bridget says:

I came here to say the same thing. She’s looking rough.

    • Samtha says:

Yep. She needs a different shade that goes better with her skin.

    • Green Girl says:

Agreed! It just makes her look so much older. I think she should have gone with a dark shade of brown instead.

    • Sarah says:

Yes! Her skin looks terrible and the pink just makes it worse. Everything about Jenny McCarthy is trashy.

    • beautifulDay says:

In terms of that “punk” styling, it’s very unstable, not as in “mentally ill”, but it challenges the eye, so the rest of the person has to be really harmonious. Anything “weird” or “edgy” needs balance. It’s sad to say that typically really symmetrical people can “pull off” this strategy. The strong hair color trend isn’t for everybody. Make it stop.

    • aemish says:

She realllly should have just worn a halloween wig for a day.. scared of that

    • Miller621 says:

It ages her and looks trashy, her hair looks kinda fried too. If she did a subtle pink it would look better. I can’t stand her for obvious reasons, I do have disdain for hair color like this or all red, I think it’s trashy on anyone.

    • platypus says:

Are people just saying she looks bad because they dislike her or what? Sure, she looks her age, but still better than most women in their 40’s IMO.

      • Willow says:

Yeah I don’t like her but I think she looks young for 42. Her skin looks good to me. I wonder sometimes where people live when they comment negatively re: celeb appearances….most of them look much younger/more maintained than the rest of us..

  2. Kay says:

    Trashy af.

    • Belle Epoch says:

      Measles are red
      Her hair is pink
      I think the color is
      “This b*tch can’t think”

    • Tacos and TV says:

Right?! Like what the F! I try not be an ageist, but a grown woman at 42 should know better than to dye her hair that shade of pink. It’s awful for anyone, but father time and mother nature do catch up with you and certain choices make it more apparent. I say if you want to do something bold, go for it! but with some thought and process.

  3. Brittney B says:

Hate the woman, love the hair.

    • Erinn says:

Same. There’s a girl in town (it’s a small town) with hair this color. And I’m beyond jealous. I think I’m going to go and get some peekaboo style highlights in teal or fuschia or something. I used to have bright red dip-dyed ends, and at one point had the underneath of my hair dyed bright red. I loved it.

      • Shambles says:

I love vibrant peekaboo colors. I used to have some little sections of peekaboo pink and I miss them so very much. If my current job would allow vibrant hair colors, I would have turquoise in my hair, like, yesterday. Get your peekaboo colors, Erinn! I shall live vicariously through you. That’s the thing, I actually love vibrant hair. This just isn’t working on Jenny.

      • Erinn says:

I think I’m going to cave and chop a bit of length and get some peekaboos quite soon. I start a new job next month (yay no more phone support!) as a full time web developer so maybe I’ll do some celebration hair 🙂

      • Kitten says:

Yeah she sucks but the hair color is amazing. I wish I could get away with a fun color, but my boss would kick my ass if I did that sh*t.

      • Wren says:

I love it too. Makes me wish I had the patience (and money) to keep up a super vivid dye job like that. But alas I don’t and will have to enjoy vicariously. I’m not a big fan of her, though, but oh well.

  4. Annie says:

    Well. Well, isn’t that special?

  5. Jules says:

    Does someone need some attention?

    • Dvaria says:

bingo. attention bucket was running low, must be refilled. obviously donnie isn’t doing enough in that apartment.

    • Esmom says:

Seriously. I actually don’t mind the hair color in theory. On someone else. And her oversharing about Donnie is making my stomach turn.

      • BlueNailsBetty says:

Ha! The funny thing is his character on Blue Bloods would puke if he heard someone talking like this.

    • Size Does Matter says:

Neither striking nor trashy, just very, very thirsty.

    • Trillion says:

Does she have actual fans? I’m confused by her continued presence in the media.

    • chaine says:

well, it served its purpose. I had never heard of her reality show before reading this article.

      • Christin says:

Ashamed to admit this, but I caught a few minutes of their show this weekend. He does seem genuinely gaga for her. She is immature and thirsty for attention as can be.

Who calls a hairdresser at 1:00 am? And how does that conversation go? ‘Hello, I have a hair color emergency! Must have it dyed something very attention getting, stat!’

    • hadlyB says:

She must of gotten some work done thats a classic celeb move to avert attention to any plastic surgery work done.

Kim K, Hilary Duff, etc .. go blonde, cut it, bright colors — the public is all what ? And no one notices the filler, or nose job, boob redo, whatever they had done. A few weeks go by and they are back to their normal hair.

  6. Shambles says:

Not striking, not trashy, just scary. She looks like a goblin at a rave. And the fact that her interview aired during Hoda and Kathy’s segment says it all.

  7. sally says:

i love the hair. it’s fun and summery!

  8. NewWester says:

That is not “hot bitch pink”. It is ” pink flamingo lawn ornament”

  9. Miran says:

I’m not usually the OMG she’s too old for that look type of person, but on someone younger it would probably be fine. But her skin is too tanned and leathery looking and the eyeliner with it is way too much and she looks a lot older than she is.

  10. Pedro45 says:

Is there ever a question about Jenny McCarthy to which the answer isn’t “trashy”?

  11. Kiddo says:

Anyone who has to convince the public of their passion for their SO is trying to convince themselves, IMO.

  12. minx says:

They’ve been married 11 months, not 2 years. Late August 2014.
I only know this because the wedding was not far from where I live in the Chicago area.

    • Jane says:

You’re exactly right. They were married in St. Charles, Illinois.

As for the “addicted to each other”…yeah, I can see that. They were actually making out in front of the audience at the NKOTB concert -Allstate Arena a couple months ago. They were showing off. Then the camera and lights were on her when she was leaving the arena before the show ended.

    • Lama Bean says:

      Jinx, Minx!

  13. Lama Bean says:

They’ve only been married 10.5 months, though the whole publicity famewhore stunt they call dating has been going on for 2 years.

  14. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I don’t care for it on her, but whatever. I thought her age remark was dumb. Pink hair is really more suitable for someone in their twenties, I guess, but I’ve seen women in their sixties with purples air or a green stripe in it and they looked fine. I’m not sure it’s about age, but whether or not the color flatters you.

    • chaine says:

I agree. I have a friend in her 60’s whose natural hair color is white and who has very pale caucasian skin. She does bright pink streaks and swirls of the color Jenny is using, and, contrary to Jenny’s ‘do, it looks fabulous.

    • Wren says:

Agree about how it’s the color not the age. I’m sick of the “you’re too old for X, Y and Z” bullcrap women get told all the time. If you want to dye your hair, do it. I don’t care if you’re 17 or 70, but please choose a color that looks good on you! Not all colors look good on all people, and it pains me when people don’t realize this. Same goes for clothing.

      • Jenna says:

So very right. I mean, I’ve been dying my hair ‘odd’ colors since I was out on my own and don’t plan on ever stopping. Every time I get bored with it, I either bleach it all out to white blond or go the full Xena and get it black with a blunt bang – it’s HAIR. It grows. And when a woman with plastic boobs, duck lips, a face like a windtunnel victim and bleachblond hair up to heaven tells me I’m not looking ‘normal’… I just thank my lucky stars and keep on trucking! If the color works, roll with it, tween/granny/anything in between! On Jenny… baacck away from the tanning machine girl, just back away. On her, it kind looks like neon trim on a old piece of luggage.

  15. embertine says:

I like the hair, and it can’t be any more nutballs than her actual personality.

  16. Me too says:

Did we just use the term trashy to describe a woman? Wow. This site is so hypocritical.

    • lonnie says:

She looks trashy and presents herself in a trashy manner. It is what it is. Political correctness can’t save everyone.

    • Naddie says:

But, does “trashy” have a sexual tone? I’m not arguing, I’m truly confused.

    • I Choose Me says:

You’re reaching. The word trashy does not assume gender but behaviour.

      • meh says:

The word trashy is about class. It implies negative traits as a result of low socioeconomic status. It’s a really loaded way to describe people. Just say her hair looks ugly for Christ sake.

    • Jaded says:

“I Choose Me” is right – trashy doesn’t refer to ones sexuality. Kid Rock is trashy, the Kardashians are trashy, the cast of Jersey Shore is trashy. Here is the Urban Dictionary’s explanation of trashy:

“A person who lacks class. Trashy people exist among all races and socioeconomic levels. Trashy people lack meaningful goals and purpose in life. They are not very concerned with academic subjects, worldly matters, or culture, but are more amused with unimportant matters and simple activities such as spending vast amounts of money and excessive partying into late hours. They are self-obsessed and contribute little or nothing to society, which is why they are associated with “trash”. Although they may think they’re cool, most other people find them obnoxious, immature, irresponsible, and unintelligent.”

  17. Dmm says:

    That pink is so 1999.

  18. boredblond says:

I’m shocked that someone with her vast medical education hasn’t read that study about the deleterious effects of fuchsia hair dye on the frontal cortex…and of course it looks like a cheap Halloween wig..

  19. Melody says:

OMG – it’s so…yeah, I just don’t care. The only thing I would care about in this situation is if her infinitely more talented cousin Melissa had done this to her as a prank.

  20. Retty says:

Crikey, it really is a slow news day! Someone dyed their hair, stop the presses!

  21. pk says:

Jenny is not at the age that she can get away with it

  22. Jess says:

Eh, I actually think she kinda sorta maybe pulls it off, I’ll look again after I’ve had caffeine but in one picture she looks decent and it makes her eyes pop. To each their own!

I also think what Jenny and Donnie have is genuine and cute, but I’m suspicious of their desire to do reality tv.

    • MG says:

I agree. I kind of dig it and it really brings out her eyes.

    • platypus says:

Yeah, her eyes look crazy intense with the pink hair. IDK why people seem to perfer the dusty pink/blue/green dyes, they are so much more unflattering than this.

  23. NeNe says:

    PURE TRASH!!!!

  24. Miffy says:

    1. You’re too old for that colour
    2. You’re nowhere near cool enough to pull of a vibrant colour
    3. That colour does not suit your skin tone at all. Why do people think that this doesn’t apply to vibrant dye jobs?
    4. ‘Custom couture colour’? I had this colour when I was 15 and I bought the dye for 6 euro. You need a refund.
    5. Ease the fudge back on your IG filters, it looks like your face was drawn onto the photo.

  25. Franca says:

If she didn’t have an orange tan and the colour was paler, it would look great with her colouring.

I did crazy things to my hair, but never because of guys. I don’t get that.

    • Miffy says:

I’ve done crazy things to my hair just for me and also because of relationship problems. It felt like a bit of a cleansing, to be honest, like a fresh start because of a new look. Inevitably it would always be a hasty decision and I regretted it instantly. Every time.

  26. Abbicci says:

We all need to save a copy of this pic to our hard drives. It is the perfect example of going from thirsty to parched.

Jenny is at stunting level parched.

  27. Tough Cookie says:

She looks like a porn star.

The Facetime thing makes me uncomfortable. My daughter had a boyfriend who insisted she keep her phone line open at night (it was before she had Facetime) so he would know she was at home and not out with another guy. It was creepy and controlling and I still celebrate the day she broke up with him (February 15 2010.)

  28. meme says:

Trashy and STFU about Donnie. Ugh. You know they’re not a forever couple.

    • I Choose Me says:

I think he’s way more into her than she is to him. She’s more addicted to the attention being with him brings.

  29. Jayna says:

I think they are crazy for each other. He was even out in the audience when she was on WWHL a little while ago. Of course, that doesn’t mean they will last forever. But for now, I believe they are.

The bright pink, meh. I don’t find this kind of thing flattering on someone in their 40s. Sure, she can still pull it off on one hand, but on the other, she just looks like a woman in her 40s dying her hair pink. There’s nothing fresh about it.

    • Christin says:

Not sure it will last, either, but for now they seem into each other.

Now, if the reality show gets canceled, who knows. After all, the whole premise is he loves her (or vice versa — I don’t recall the name order in the show title).

  30. Zigggy says:

I like that bright bold colour, but I think it would look better on someone with paler skin.

  31. Delta Juliet says:

I kind of love it. Hate her and I don’t think it looks good ON HER, but I love the pink. I wonder how it will wear though.

  32. EN says:

It doesn’t work with her skin tone, it is too tanned. It would look OK with ivory milky skin like Kelly Osbourne has. She is always dying her hair interesting colors but at least it works for her.

This hair screams midlife crisis to me.

  33. Irene says:

That shade ages her and clashes with her tan. She should have gone for a softer pink, or just done streaks.

  34. Matador says:

Jenny and Donnie haven’t been married two years – they’ll only hit their one-year weding anniversary this August. They got together the previous summer.

But I agree overall they’ve lasted longer than anyone expected.

  35. bns says:

Not feeling it on her but Shirley Manson dyed her hair pink recently and it is adorable.

  36. Tracy says:

“I figured (at 42) I’m still at the age where I can get away with it.”

Um, no. Jenny suffers from lookatme! lookatme! lookatme! Syndrome. Her relentless need for attention is exhausting.

  37. Bread and Circuses says:

Yikes. But not for the hair.

I *like* the hair. However, her eyes look incredibly fake to me now, i.e. look like coloured contact lenses. They’ve never struck me that way before, but with this hair colour, for some reason, they jump out as looking like bits of plastic.

  38. serena says:

    Extremely trashy.

  39. TheOtherViv says:

As much as I dislike her for her silly talk, I was looking at that instagram pic and thought: pink isn’t bad on her, but she would look BREATHTAKING with black hair. Better than Charlize in AeonFlux.

  40. Christin says:

This gave me something to ask my hair stylist today. She’s earned professional color certifications in NYC, and I trust her opinion.

Her comment about Jenny’s hair was that it will require a commitment to maintenance, if she wants to keep it vibrant. Given that Jenny has had light color for so long, my stylist thinks she will need to add color weekly.

I doubt she’ll have the color two weeks anyway. She got attention, so mission accomplished.

  41. Halloween is right around the corner, get those cheap pink wigs while you can.

  42. Cara says:

Man, that is not a forgiving color on her- she needs to go back to the bob she had a while back… I thought that was cute on her. I’m soooo sick of the long- extension look.

  43. Ankhel says:

That stupid woman woke her hairdresser up in the middle of the night because she was bored with her hair? And he used a dye called “hot bitch pink”? I think he might have subtly hidden a message here somewhere…

  44. nic says:

If I were responsible for thousands of babies, elderly, and unvaccinated people losing out in vacinations and on herd immunity and dying of preventable diseases, I would curl up in a hole, not… Whatever this is. At this point, I think it’s safe to say this woman is a sociopathic narcissistic moron. I don’t give a fk what color the stupid fake hair on her psycho head is.

    • Nanea says:

But I’m sure this color doesn’t contain mercury, or thimerosal – or whatever. And is 100% chemical free. And Jenny has of course researched this subject matter with the same expert knowledge as the vaccines. And whereas vaccines are actually dangerous (or so she thinks), this color probably enhances her cognitive abilities by the nth degree.

    • Mltpsych says:

Thank you! I blame her for the whooping cough my husband and I have been suffering through for over a month. Since our kids didn’t get sick after we were wracked with horrible coughs I was very confused until we were cultured. My daughters school is 50% non-vaccinators. Thanks Jenny and as soon as I am better I am getting that dtap vaccine that probably just saved my kids’ lives. This illness is no joke. Vaccinate!!!!

  45. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

    Trashy

  46. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

“Jenny has been married to Donnie two years, which is surprising to me.”

They have been married less than one year. Googled it – married August 31, 2014

  47. Bella says:

She is too old for this in my opinion, but it also clashes with her orange skin. Not a good look. I don’t really care about Jenny McCarthy, but it would be interesting if she would finally grow up. I feel like she’s such an immature woman who is constantly engaging in attention seeking behavior. I wonder if her career would actually go anywhere if she ever acted her age and toned it down.

  48. kitty28 says:

    Love it!
I have been wanting to do this forever, but on my dark days, it might be hard to hide

  49. Brasileira says:

    Sh*tty.

  50. kitty-bye says:

I love it! When you wake up with Bright hair or whatever color you want it makes you happy! Try it :D. It makes your spirit happy!

  51. Skye says:

I love the hair, but unfortunately, its kicky new hue can’t freshen up the contents of the skull it’s covering.

  52. Stuart says:

Does she really think that a pink dye job is going to make us forget what a child killing scumbag she is?

  53. YeahYeahYeah says:

Trashy and makes her look older. Ick!
