Jamie Foxx rescued a man from a burning vehicle five seconds before it went up

Jamie Foxx was an actual hero Monday night when he rescued a 32 year-old man trapped in a burning truck just before the vehicle went up in flames! The truck was speeding near Jamie’s estate when it rolled over several times, landing on a patch of grass right in front of the gates to his house. Jamie came running out to help and, along with another witness, used EMT scissors to cut the man out of his seatbelt and pull him out of the wreck just in time. In news footage following the accident, Jamie described the scene and comforted the man’s father, who thanked him and was moved to tears. In an Instagram post following the crash, Jamie wrote “no heroes… just happy fathers.” The victim is currently recovering in hospital after suffering a broken collarbone and punctured lung. He has also been arrested for DUI. Here’s more on this story and the video of Jamie being interviewed is above. You can watch the full report in context on ABC7’s site.

Jamie Foxx is being hailed a hero after helping to rescue a man from a burning truck in Hidden Valley.

The CHP said the driver, identified as 32-year-old Brett Kyle of Newbury Park, was speeding westbound on Potrero Road when he crashed his 2007 Toyota Tacoma around 8:30 p.m. Monday, right in front of Foxx’s home.

The car struck a drainage pipe and concrete, causing it to roll over multiple times, authorities said.

The vehicle ended up on its passenger side and caught fire, trapping Kyle inside. Photos obtained by ABC7 from Joel Council of Safety For Citizens captured the dramatic scene.

Foxx said he heard the crash, called 911 and then he rushed down to the scene. The truck was already on its side and on fire. The door was locked, and the window was up.

With help from another man, Foxx pulled Kyle out of the burning wreckage. The two broke the car window using EMT scissors, cut the seat belt and pulled Kyle out to safety.

“I grabbed the scissors from him, cut the seatbelt,” Foxx said. “As we pulled him out, within five seconds later, the truck goes up (in flames).”

Council said when he got to the scene, he was surprised to see Foxx standing there talking to CHP investigators.

Ventura County firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene, and Kyle was transported to Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center for treatment. Kyle’s brother, Joe Kyle, told ABC News that Brett Kyle broke his collarbone, which in turn punctured his lung, but “he would be in a much worse situation if Jamie Foxx didn’t come along.”

Brett Kyle was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to Foxx’s property manager Manny Ortiz, the actor suffered minor cuts and burns to his hands.

Brad Kyle, Brett Kyle’s father, met with Foxx on Tuesday to thank him for saving his son’s life.

“It doesn’t matter to me who it was or what they do for a living,” he said. “Just the idea that someone would do that is so much more than I could fathom.”

“He’s got two sisters and a brother. They would have lost their brother if it wasn’t for him,” Brad Kyle said, adding that surveillance video from Foxx’s property showed other vehicles driving by and not stopping to help.

[From ABC 7]

This story and especially the way Jamie told it got me choked up. This man could have easily died in a car fire but two people did the right thing and pulled him to safety. They also point out in the news report that footage from the security cameras shows that several cars drove by without stopping to help. That’s awful. At the very least people should stop and call for help. Not everyone is as self sacrificing and brave as Jamie was here, that’s extraordinary, but it sounds like multiple people ignored this accident.

I also want to say how important it is to have a rescue tool in your car at all times. If the other guy who stopped didn’t have one, this story might have a different ending. My family mildly teases me for this, but I bought them all car escape hammers for Christmas one year and I make sure to keep one in my glove compartment. You never know if you will need it.

This is awesome, the stuff of movies. I hear they’re already making one, and Jennifer Lawrence is playing the truck driver. đŸ˜‰

In all seriousness, amazing. I’ve always liked Jamie Fox (also known as Motherf*cker Jones), and now my like has turned to love. Good to know there are still great humans out there.

  2. Rachel says:

No teasing CB. My mom got us all multi-tools for Christmas one year. Knife, breaks glass, cuts seatbelts, etc. Makes me feel better knowing I have it. Although my husband joked that we should try it out on my new car to make sure it works.

    • suze says:

I was going to say, keep that thing in your car. And remember where it is! If you need to smash a window or cut a seatbelt, it is invaluable.

    • Kitten says:

Man that’s such a mom gift. That stuff is great to have though-have the same in my old shit-mobile.

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

I bought my mom & siblings multi-tools too! I was watching one of those survivor type discovery channel shows & I remember the guy saying something about being grateful of having that tool in his car. As for Jamie Foxx, damn you are amazing.

  3. mia girl says:

    Wipes away tears…

  4. Christin says:

I saw Jamie and the father on TV this morning. Jamie was very humble about it. Not many would have jumped into action like that, especially realizing it was likely going to explode into a fireball at any moment.

Another item to carry year round is gloves. Jamie might have gotten burns from touching the hot metal.

  5. applapoom says:

    What an awesome guy!

Is that his daughter in the photo?

    • T.Fanty says:

Yes. If you don’t love Jamie Foxx yet, watch any of his Golden Globes/Oscars red carpet interviews that feature him with his daughter. It will just make you adore him. He’s so accomplished, and yet, it is absolutely clear that what he’s most proud of in his life is his daughter. He just seems so genuinely happy to be her dad.

    • Elisa the I. says:

his daughter is absolutely stunning and has an amazing smile. He is very good-looking, too. :*

  6. SusanneToo says:

Wow, a happy ending with a real life hero. So glad for the Kyles and, Jamie, you’re great!

  7. Lucy says:

What a great guy he is. He prevented what could have been an awful tragedy.

  8. Wentworth Miller says:

My dad bought one of those little escape hammers for me and I laughed and asked him if he was crazy. Like when’s the next time my car is gonna go careening over a bridge.
I think I’m gonna dig it up and put it in my car.

  9. AlmondJoy says:

đŸ˜đŸ˜đŸ˜ I love this. We need more stories like this. I’ve always loved Jamie but this solidifies it.

  10. Jwoolman says:

I would be so useless in such a situation… Good thing a couple of quick thinkers were on hand. The guy’s dad looks so relieved. He almost had to bury his son. Not the right order.

    • SusanneToo says:

My dad did much the same – pulled two people from an overturned, burning car when he was about 20. I’m certain I wouldn’t be capable of such heroics. Very courageous of Jamie and the as yet unknown rescuer.

      • AlmondJoy says:

        Your dad is amazing!

      • SusanneToo says:

@Almond Joy. Yes, he was and thanks. He enlisted right after Pearl Harbor and was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge. To me, he was just Dad. I was an adult before I recognized how great he was.

    • Antonym says:

@Jwoolman, @SusanneToo, @AlmondJoy – I think you would surprise yourself. When you read/hear about the situation it sounds overwhelmingly terrifying, but when you’re in it you just react. One day on my commute I saw an SUV roll. It was as if I, and many others were on autopilot. We stopped, ran across the highway and somehow efficiently coordinated who was calling 911, who was helping the family get out, who was calming kids…all of this while many drove by. Your concern about being capable of helping, to me, means you would choose to help and you would be capable.

To be clear, I am in no way minimizing the actions of Foxx or SusanneToo’s dad. They are both heroes. I’m just saying that your care and concern about being able to help means you would be too in the situation.

  11. Insomniac says:

    Well done, Jamie.

  12. Green Is Good says:

Back when Jamie and Hilary Swank won their Oscars, during the post award photcall, Jamie was pictured bending down and adjusting Hilary’s skirt for the picture. That’s a gentleman. That little gesture spoke volumes to me.

  13. Cindy says:

Holy crap. Like Shambles said above, this is like a movie, he is an actual real life hero. I am suddenly finding him very attractive. Lucky Katie Holmes.:)

  14. Monie says:

I ordered a car escape hammer/seat belt cutting tool after reading this article! Thanks Jamie and Celebitchy! http://www.amazon.com/Car-Hammer-Seatbelt-Emergency-Must-Have/dp/B00CB8WM2S/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1453301607&sr=8-3&keywords=car+escape+hammer

  15. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

How brave of them to run into that situation when the car was already on fire! I would want to but I’d be really scared. Both men are deserving of all the praise they are getting and more.

And I just bought one of those car hammers for both cars.

  16. serena says:

Is there something this man can’t do? He’s perfect!

  17. lucy2 says:

That’s amazing. Kudos to Jamie and the other man for their quick thinking and action.

  18. Colette says:

I hope this is a wakeup call for this guy.Don’t drink and drive. He could have died.

  19. Aang says:

Glad the man is ok, but very angry his drunk driving caused this in the first place. He not only endangered his own life but the lives of his rescuers and the lives of everyone on the road with him. The penalties for drunk driving should be far harsher than they are.

    • wow says:

@aang, I agree. I’m glad they saved him before he plowed into an innocent pedestrians or fellow driver but I have zero sympathy for this speeding, driving drunk asshole. People who drive drunk or drive with a buzz have been the cause of grief for so many families. I truly loathe them.

Having said that though, it was the right thing for them to do.

  20. Rachel says:

It’s best not to keep car escape tools in your glove box. If you crash and the airbags deploy, you may not be able to open your glove box. Maybe keep it in the center console? I keep a small one in my purse and made hubby keep one in his car.

  21. Spike says:

Really appreciate how he continually turned the focus to the family. Very respectful & thoughtful. Didn’t turn it into a self-aggrandizing moment.

It is very nice to see how sweet and protective he is with his daughter. A class act.

  22. word says:

Jamie Foxx is really a hero ! What a nice story. Just pissed the driver he saved was drunk ! I mean he could have killed an innocent person ! What is wrong with people? Stop f*cking drinking and driving !!!!!

  23. tmot says:

OMG, Jamie must be a scientologist! Because a scientologist is the only one who can help in an accident! WOW!

    • Emily C. says:

Hah! I didn’t care before whether Kate was dating Jamie, but how perfect would that be after this?

  24. Carmen says:

    Jamie for the win!

  25. kri says:

Awesome thing, Jamie and Other Guy. Would like to know the other pesron as well who helped. And yes on the safety tools for the car! They have inexpensive kits that could make a difference if you are ever in a bad situation. And I have to say, of course I am happy that this person was saved, and happy for his family, and now please take him to rehab. please.

  26. Gina says:

Tears in my eyes! And how humble Jamie is! What a man!

  27. Don't kill me I'm French says:

    Real hero !

  28. Lou says:

Jamie is a big supporter of up and coming young artists and even invited an unknown Ed Sheeran to stay at his house the first time he went to LA . Ed said he allowed him to use his studio and that all of Jamie’s family live with him, kids, mother, sister etc and he was made to feel really welcome. Jamie’s sister has Down Syndrome and he is a big supporter of that cause.

But straight up, celeb or not, this is a very decent and brave thing to do – so many would have ignored it (and did)

  29. teacakes says:

That was a really amazing thing he and the other rescuer did – I don’t know if I’d have the guts to enter a burning vehicle to save a stranger.

But it honestly enrages me that the driver was drunk – he risked the lives of everyone on that road, including the people who saved him, for something he needn’t have done.

  30. Lilacflowers says:

Such a courageous thing to do, both Jamie and the other man who helped. Jamie is truly a good guy and a class act, in addition to being a great talent.

This is one of two such incidents that I’m hearing about today. Last week, Patriots player Darius Flemming saw an accident, a burning car, kicked in the car’s passenger window, and pulled out the woman driver. He then reported to Patriots practice to explain what happened before going to the hospital to treat his leg. He got 22 stitches but still played in Sunday’s game and the story is only coming out now.

The brave acts for others in need by Jamie and Darius give me proof that there are good people in this world

    • Pansy says:

Thanks for sharing that! We need to know there are good celebrities in this world, not just vapid, shallow ones! We need to know there are good PEOPLE in this world altogether.

  31. anne_000 says:

Thankfully there are people like Foxx and the other guy who will go out of their way, even to the point of injuring themselves, to help another person.

And good for this other guy for having and bringing the EMT shears.

And boo to all those who drove past, even if the only thing they did was to call 9-11.

And the drunk driver should be put in jail for at least a year and be in some kind of rehab program and have his license taken away until he’s completed everything. I don’t need someone like this driving around.

  32. bored_01 says:

He’s a class act, all the way. I’m sure many folks would have just watched the show from the window of their mansion instead.

  33. Eggplant says:

I like Jamie Foxx. The dad looks soooo choked up; so moving. I hope JF goes public with Katie soon, but it’s unlikely. He’s never even named the mothers of his daughters. He’s a private guy.

  34. Brasileira says:

Foxx just won a fan in me.

  35. Donna Martin says:

@celebitchy silly question but where in the car would you store it?

  36. Emily C. says:

    This is awesome.

Who was the other guy who helped? Did he want to remain anonymous? He deserves just as much love for this.

  37. msw says:

I just ordered two of those escape kits. Thank you, for real. I didn’t know such a thing existed and I spend a lot of time in my vehicle. Emergencies happen, and I’ll be so glad to have that.

  38. AntiSocialButterfly says:

Now there’s another fire he will heroically manage… in Katie’s pants!

  39. danielle says:

    Jamie is amazing!

  40. na na says:

beautiful story! this man is a real humanitarian. risking your life that way for someone else!? amazing!!

  41. Maya says:

I saw this on the news last night and had to rewind it twice to watch it again–I loved this story so much. Totally made me cry and crush on Jamie Foxx again! I thought the most touching part was how Jamie repeatedly comforted the victim’s sweet dad. It showed how naturally compassionate Jamie is.
