Jennifer Lawrence in Stella McCartney at the Oscar lunch: best dressed?

wenn23466826

On Monday, the Academy held their annual Oscars Lunch (or luncheon) for the year’s nominees. It was a sea of white faces, because of course it was. It also felt like a pretty low-key moment in the awards season, which is slightly unusual. I remember in years past, the Oscars lunch felt bigger, more fun, crazier, a moment for nominees to let down their hair a bit. Not so much at this point, where nominees are expected to spend half the lunch chatting with media outlets and posing for photos. Anyway, let’s get to the fashion! Let’s start with Jennifer Lawrence in this Stella McCartney suit. I always love J-Law in a suit because it’s sort of a rare occurrence. And I almost always hate Stella’s designs, but I like this. Should the trouser inseam go up a few inches? Sure. But that’s literally my only complaint. I would love to own this suit.

wenn23466882

Lady Gaga, wearing one of the cheapest hairpieces I’ve seen in a long time. This Christian Siriano gown is not her color, nor is it particularly nice to look at.

wenn23466621

Rooney Mara in Giambattista Valli. I sort of like this dress, but I suspect I would like it more on someone else, like Cate Blanchett. You know what bugs me about Rooney’s styling? Consistently unflattering hair. This center part is doing her no favors. It’s like she doesn’t realize that there are other hairstyles other than “severe.”

wenn23466802

wenn23466800

Brie Larson’s Emilia Wickstead ensemble is made of NOOOOooo.

wenn23466795

Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton. A totally blah little dress on a blah person. It’s too twee for her, it makes her look even more child-like.

wenn23466792

Rachel McAdams – this Prada is my choice for worst-dressed of the event, which makes me sad because Rachel was been doing really well this awards season. I will say this: this look is “on trend” with a lot of the women at the luncheon – there were so many twee, child-like looks that would have been more comfortable on 5-year-old girls.

wenn23466805

Saoirse Ronan was one of my favorites – I love that she wore “dress shorts.” And tweed! This ensemble is Laura Basci. Very cute.

  1. Original Kay says:

    She looks lovely.
The rest are just a bucket of no.

  2. Locke Lamora says:

Nope. She’s too California girl-like to pull of something like this. Rooney Mara would look amazing in that suit. Her hair would look so much better if she went a shade darker. This Playboy Bunny blonde suits no one.
Rooney looks great. And I think the hair suits her, it brings out her delicate features.
Saoirse is the best dressed for me, if only the pants were not shorts. And her hair finally looks good.
    Rachel and Alicia look okay.
    Brieand Gaga? Just no.

    • K says:

What? Californians wear black all the time. I can’t stand JLaw but she at no point looks like a playboy bunny. You can be blonde and from California and wear black, be sophisticated and taken seriously. You know LA is one of the biggest deal places in fashion right now right? It’s where all of European designers are looking and holding shows (tom ford, ysl) and most American trends are coming from.

Rooney would have looked more like a corpse in JLaw’s look. I also am very pale so I don’t understand why they don’t warn that girl up in her styling she is so harsh.

I like Alicia and Saorise looks the best they are fun. I loved Rachel McAdams performance in spotlight she was fantastic.

      • Locke Lamora says:

I meant that her look is more surfer-girl and a sharp suit doesn’t go well with it. I also didn’tr say she looks like a playoy bunny, I said that the shade of her hair is playboy bunny blonde. I also didn’t say that Californians can’t be sophisticated and wear black. I should have worded it better.

I like Rooney pale skin, dark hair and dark clothes go great with that look,

      • Chem says:

Tom Ford is american. But yes, LA makes trends

      • K says:

@locke sorry misunderstood. I also didn’t mean to come across like I didn’t like rooney’s pale skin as someone with that pale of skin I do, I just don’t like how they pull her hair so tight and do such bleak (lack of a better word) makeup.

        @chem tom ford is British

      • BrandyAlexander says:

@K, Tom Ford is from Texas. I do think he lives primarily in Europe now, but he is most definitely American. The first line from his wiki page:

Thomas Carlyle “Tom” Ford (born August 27, 1961) is an American fashion designer and film director.

    • qwerty says:

Yes Rooney would rock that suit. Her hair is great too.

Although JLaw’s is not bad either, and she’s not wearing a crap Dior gown for once so that’s nice.

      • Jib says:

It looks good on JLaw. Although for someone supposedly always eating, she looks like she’s lost a lot of weight!!!

    • Chem says:

      Completely agree

    • taxi says:

Besides the severe hairdo, Rooney has bad, round-shouldered posture which make her clothes appear ill-fitted. She’s rarely a standout on the carpet, imo.

  3. ShinyGrenade says:

Actually, I don’t like that suit on her. She don’t pull it off. And she sometimes looks like Stiffler’s Mom.

    • Willa says:

      Lmfao!!!! Stiffler’s mom!!!!! Hahaaaaaa

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Very dated looking and the pants don’t fit well.

    • minx says:

Yeah, I think it looks borderline frumpy.

    • kri says:

@Shiny Grenade LOLOLOLOL OMG. I’m dyingggggg! Please don’t let her get near a pie. We’d have to hear about that for years. OMG Comment gold.

    • OrigialTessa says:

It’s a terrible suit. It looks like something you’d buy out of the Victoria’s secret catalog. Terrible fit. Cheap looking belt. It’s tacky. Rooney is best dressed for me. But the competition didn’t put up much of a fight.

    • Pandy says:

I don’t like the suit on JLaw either but i do like the suit Saoirse is wearing. I don’t mind Brie Larson’s dress either. Gaga looks like crap. And the little girl dresses are terrible. Rooney is looking more thin and drawn than usual. She’s going to look horrific by her 40s.

  4. Rainbow says:

    Rooney Mara’s hair… Jesus
It makes her look like an alien. This hairstyle should be banned.

  5. Sugar says:

JLaw’s suit is so 80’s! It looks like something Linda Evans would have worn on Dynasty.

Saorsie’s outfit is cute but her shoes are totally wrong. Imagine how cute it woul be with booties or oxfords. That heavy outfit needs a heavy shoe.

  6. jinni says:

I personally love Rachel’s outfit. It looks cute and she can pull it off. JLaw’s outfit looks really nice on her. It the first outfit in a long time that I have actually liked her in. Mara, like Paltrow needs to give up the middle part with the super straight hair. It just looks harsh on them.

  7. CornyBlue says:

Ronan is absolute favourite! She looks so good and looks her age.
Jen looks amazing on the upper part. The pants are a damn mess.
Vikander is looks so good too. The colour is gorgeous on her

  8. ichsi says:

I see LV is back to dressing (and styling?) Alicia like their own hebephilia play doll. No. No, thank you. Soairse is the only one I like but her shoes look painful.

  9. Kiki says:

I happen to love Saoirse Ronan short pants suit. It suits her age and it is very cute.

I hate JLaws pants ensemble. Stella MCartney is really a lazy designer. Not efnough effort and can she sew? Because the seams on the whole outfit is botched.

Get a new hairstyle Rooney Mara.

The dress on Alicia Vikander is cute but when will she dress like a woman for once. Gees, is she 12 or 27. You tell me.

  10. Pixi says:

I had to look twice at Alicia Vikander because I thought “what is Ariana Grande doing here?”

  11. Pixi says:

Oh, and Lady Gaga’s hair game has been bad for a while…

  12. GlimmerBunny says:

I love Alicia’s look, she looks great in red. And seriously, she can’t help that she has a young-looking face. I do too and I happen to love wearing dresses and flared skirts – should I stop just because it makes me look young?

    • Ally8 says:

Agree. I don’t find that dress particularly child-like, especially in red. I think it looks fab. The pink/print shoe is unexpected and elevates the look even more. For a Hollywood luncheon, I think it’s a great choice. She has a natural look that I find really refreshing: everything isn’t pulled and tweaked and dyed.

      • Locke Lamora says:

Yeah, I don’t see it as child like at all. She looks nice. The colour compliments her warm skin.

      • Lola says:

OMG, have to write, find this hilarious…post: likes AV bc “everything is not tweeked or dyed” while for another the color of her dress goes with “warm skin tone” … ha, ha, ha… so, I guess that using sun taning spray doesn’t qualify you as having been dyed. LMAO!!!!

    • Size Does Matter says:

Agree with you all. She looks great.

Gaga looks like she got lost on her way somewhere else – I’m not sure where else – and wound up at the Oscar luncheon by accident.

    • littlemissnaughty says:

Exactly. That color is stunning on her, it’s damn near perfect and the dress itself is cute. She’s a small woman and has a very young face, so what?

Saoirse Ronan looks really pretty. JLaw … looks okay? It’s such a dated cut though?

As an aside, are strappy sandals back? Is 2016 the year when that happens?

      • Jaye says:

Is she really that small, though? She’s 5ft5-5ft6, which isn’t all that small. She’s slim, but again, not distractingly as she’s naturally fine-boned. I’m always hearing that she’s tiny, small, little, etc., so I googled her height, but to me her height/build seems normal rather than petite.

I think because she doesn’t tend to wear heavy or statement make-up on the red carpet she can look “younger” (compared with, say, Blake Lively who tends to wear quite a lot of makeup on the red carpet), but IMHO she looks her age.

I love that colour on her, though, and I think the dress is cute and not at all twee.

      • Locke Lamora says:

It’s her face. She has a very young looking face.

      • Valois says:

I don’t think her face looks that young. Maybe a few years younger, but not like a teenager.

      • Jaye says:

@Valois I agree. I think her face looks her age (mid-late twenties) also.

I can only imagine some people live in areas where people look as old as the hills at early doors if they think she looks like a teenager.

    • Shaunna says:

I see Alicia in a whole different light since I saw The Danish Girl. She was incredible! Alicia has a young face on the red carpet but not in the movie because her acting was so strong. I like the dress.

    • Elisa the I. says:

      ITA, Alicia looks the best.

  13. manta says:

The suit is ok but i really don’t like big large belts on short jackets like this one. Nice but not exactly best dressed.

  14. Jenns says:

Rachel’s dress would look so much better without that bow.

  15. Jules says:

    Love Lawrence’s pantsuit!…gorgeous and sophisticated.

    As for the rest:
    Ronan: very cute.

Larsen: A whole world of WTF.

Vikander: I think I wore the same dress when I turned 6 years old.

McAdams: See above post, except it was when I turned 7 years old.

Mara: My great aunt had the same material and pattern for her slipcovered sofa.

GaGa: I like the drama of it…

    That’s it, folks!.

  16. AlmondJoy says:

Call me crazy, but I actually like every outfit here. Except for Gaga and Brie Larson. I would love Rachel McAdams’ dress without the red bow. I have a dress just like the one Alicia is wearing so I can’t hate on that either lol.

  17. lila fowler says:

Rooney Mara looks ridiculous per usual. That hair plus that granny handbag dress that is about two sizes too big — it’s like she’s trying to look unattractive. Or she just is, either way. They are not making the Dragon Tattoo sequels, sis, move on already.

I like what Alicia is wearing, it is fun and perfect for that event. She is gorgeous and I think she’s been slaying stylewise this season. I don’t really care for Jennifer Lawrence’s suit, Ronan’s is very cute, though. Rachel’s dress would be better without the red bow.

  18. Farhi says:

I actually like Mara’s dress . The rest of the outfits are just a big No from me. Alicia is barely pulling off that little red ballerina dress. It is in her style but almost on anybody else it would look ridiculous.

  19. Jag says:

    Is Lawrence pregnant?

I don’t like her hair, but I do love that suit and it looks good on her.

Everyone else – sheesh – just no.

  20. Classy and Sassy says:

What’s your beef with Alicia Vikander? I saw The Danish Girl recently and thought she was brilliant in it.

    • Kiki says:

Well, there’s no doubt that AV is a good actress and I personally have no qualms about her acting. But to me personally, I don’t like her because she has this stuck up, privilege and self-entitled attitde that most people don’t like and I am one them. And then there are people who are just jealous of her.. period.

      P. S she should lighten up alot.

      • D says:

English is not her first language, it can be really difficult to express your thoughts in another language, I think that’s one reason why she can seem a bit cold or stuck up. When she’s speaking swedish she comes across as more lighthearted and relaxed.
        Plus she’s Fassy’s current girlfriend… 🙂

      • CornyBlue says:

Where has she been self entitled and stuck up? All her interviews seem genuinely nice.

      • Nori says:

Privileged? Her father is a doctor back home and she was even rejected from drama school 2 times.
You know, Malia Obama and the Smith kids are more privileged then her yet I don’t see any criticism for their lack of talent or how they got into Hollywood. If Malia becomes a director, I will not watch her movies. I also do not watch any of the Smith kids movies either. I call for the Boycott of Hollywood Nepotism!

      • AJ says:

Why should she bother to lighten up when her 12 stans continue to give her a pass and insist that SHE IS PERFECT AND CAN DO NO WRONG UR ALL BIG MEANIE FACES WHO WANT HER BF AND ARE JEALOUS OF THE DIVINE LIGHT THAT SHINES FROM HER DEWEY SKIN!!11

      • Kiki says:

Wel, if your u must know… She may have gotten rejected from drama school twice but a door open for her quickly when she starred in a Swedish tv show… Privileged much anyone?

And secondly, I think her English seems well to me… So don’t come with that oh english is not her first language schick. And right now, I really don’t care about her and her “beautiful” boyfriend of hers. P. S I have said it in the early, she does take herself way to seriously.

      • D says:

@AJ, well, that escalated quickly lol

      • D says:

@Kiki You know… just because someones pronunciation and grammar is good, doesn’t mean that it’s easy for them to express their thoughts. English is not my first language and expressing myself clearly so that what I’m saying makes any sense is a real struggle.
And I don’t really care about her or her “beautiful” boyfriend either (although he is kinda handsome 😉 haha)

      • Cara says:

@D – swedes know English better than most Brits and Americans.

      • Juls says:

@D This. She still makes occasional errors.

      • Holmes says:

Even if she does speak it better than most Brits and Americans, it’s still not her native language. Unless you’re raised bilingual from birth (and maybe she was, I don’t know, but since both of her parents are swedes it seems unlikely), it doesn’t matter how fluent you get–you’ll always come off a bit stilted and not be able to express yourself as well in a non-native language.

    • Marianne says:

Well last year she did interview where she said something like “Im in a few movies that will probably get attention this awards season”. I think that rubbed people the wrong way.

      Idk. I think she’s harmless.

      • guest says:

Well, she was right though 🙂 Pretty sure people would not react that way if Miss Lawrence said something like that. Oh well…..

  21. SJO says:

The pink skirt looks like someone embroidered cartoon cockroaches on it. Gaga looks like a drag queen past her prime.
JLaw looks sexay. Love the suit

  22. lizzie says:

if alicia vikander is somehow being categorized as blah – just kill me now….

  23. Astrid says:

I’m not digging any of these outfits. I’ll duck and hide now

  24. Renee says:

Rooney’s dress would be cute if it was properly fitted.
    Brie – no.
Love McAdams but the dress is too tight and too twee.
Lawrence’s suite is just meh to me.

  25. Grant says:

Rachel McAdams worst dressed over Brie Larson in that abomination? Are those eyelashes?? No… I actually don’t hate what Rachel’s wearing. JLaw looks phenom.

  26. Elle says:

I think I must love twee lol. My proportions are quite small (small breasts and frame) and I usually go for a twee look for formal occasions. Def not trying to go for ‘child like. I think this look is so much better on Alicia than when she wore that heavily sequinned dress! With my frame, I will usually go for short dresses with more coverage on the top. Both Rachel and Alicia look gorgeous. And Bree Larson looks beautiful in that color.. It would have looked MUCH better without that crazy print. And I like Rooney Mara in white rather than black but the dress really is poorly fitted. And i agree- change up the hair. The suits look good. Gaga looks terrible. And by that I’m mostly referring to her face transformation. Although the dress is quite unflattering, as is her styling.

  27. kri says:

That Prada looks like bathroom tile bedazzled by a middle schooler on a snow day. And the fabric on JLaw’s suit…oh so cheap. Don’t even get near a candle wearing that. Oy. I do like Saoirse’ outfit.

  28. Georgia says:

Love love love Rooney Mara’s dress and Saoirse Ronan looks stunning.

  29. Tallia says:

I guess I am the odd gal out, because I love Brie Larson’s Emilia Wickstead ensemble. JLaw needs to hem her pants. I do not mind Rooney’s dress, but the shoes are a no. Everyone else is fine, nothing fabulous, but nothing awful.

  30. TreadStyle says:

Omg poor Brie! Hers is the worst & Rachel def comes in at 2nd but they all are bad minus Jennifer and Saiorse who rocked their suits. Jennifer needs to tell Alicia how to wear trousers bc her pink ones the other day were horribley unflattering.

  31. serena says:

I would really love to hear what Jlaw has to say about this year Oscars.

  32. Lola says:

A minority here… I liked Brie’s outfit. Looks like the only one who seemed to have fun with an outfit. The shirt could have been a bit tighter, and created more of a form without loosing the concept behind the shirt.

PS. We as women need to demand sandal heals to be wider!!!

  33. madi says:

IMO they all look equally good. Different, with some quibbles, but it makes them just human.

  34. Luciana says:

We have a problem of beautiful ladies bad styled.

    1) JLaw looks good from the waist up. The trousers are wrong. She looks like a tall version of Jessica Simpson.

    2) Lady Gaga should rethink her hair colour.

    3) Rooney Mara’s dress is a size too big and the shoes are wrong. Another lady who should rethink her hair situation.

    4) Alicia Vikander saves the day (Amazing hair!!!!) but again the shoes are wrong.

    5) I like Rachel’s dress but on someone else. The shoes are a miss.

    6) Last but not least, Saoirse. Beautiful. Age appropiate. I love it.

    • Luciana says:

I totally forgot about Brie. Her happiness outshines her bizarre dress. She can do better. Brie, fire your current stilist. Get Kirten Dunst’s one!

  35. lucy2 says:

I love the suit, and Saoirse looks great too. The other dresses aren’t great, but whatever.
Gaga looks way overdressed, and the dress and hair color are bad.

  36. dAsh says:

Jen needs to change her hair color. She looks washed up in the photos. Brie looked so happy to be there. That chic in red and Soarse and Rachel have cute outfits.

  37. Sarah01 says:

Saoirse and Alicia look the best, simple and well put together.
Gaga needs a major make under.

  38. Juls says:

I don’t find Jennifer’s look appropriate for the event. Saoirse’s and Vikander’s outfits are the best. Vikander’s dress is perfect for the occasion. This “child-like” criticism is just lazy at this point.

  39. Deedee says:

Jennifer looks fresh and crisp and professional. I like it.

  40. Tia says:

Saoirse for the win! Jennifer also looks good.

  41. AllieC says:

Rachel McAdams needs a new stylist. She looks tired. I think it might be her hair color. She always looks exhausted and washed out. The Vikander girl is best. She’s adorable and always dresses well.

  42. toby says:

Jennifer’s suit is straight up 2000s JLo or Jessica Simpson. That belt is awful. She looks great from belt up.

Gaga doesn’t quite fit in here.

Rooney’s dress is beautiful, but too big on her. I also wish she would wear her hair differently.

    Brie is no.

Alicia looks beautiful and the dress is something I’d wear so no complaints. She’s in her 20s, let her be in her 20s.

LOVE Rachel’s dress. The details are so pretty.

    Ronan wins

  43. raincoaster says:

A charmeuse gown at lunch. Really, Gaga? Reminds me of the saying that a mistress is always dressed for the social engagement after the one she’s at: at breakfast, she’s dressed for a fancy lunch. At lunch, dressed for cocktails. At cocktails, dressed for dinner. At dinner, she’s dressed for bed. Gaga is about three social engagements ahead.
