Jon Stewart to produce Onion-like animated show for HBO

I have what might possibly be the best news of this entire election. Peabody Award winner Jon Stewart will return to the airways in time for the November US elections. After making John Oliver do all the heavy lifting, and watching poor Stephen Colbert lose the legal right to be “Stephen Colbert,” HBO announced that Jon is returning with a new animated “Onion-like” series, possibly just in time to weigh in on all things politics. Phew *wipes brow*

It’s been one hell of an election season so far, but one thing we’ve been missing from this massive political circus is Jon Stewart’s cynical voice of reason.

Since the comedian left “The Daily Show” in 2015, we’ve been forced to face the current state of American politics (mostly) without him. But his return to the political landscape via HBO ― he signed a four-year-contract with the network last year ― may come sooner than we thought.

Casey Bloys, HBO’s programming chief, told The Hollywood Reporter Stewart will produce an animated parody show that will (hopefully) air this fall. Bloys wouldn’t provide an official premiere date but was hopeful about September or October. If the hint is actually the truth, that would mean Stewart would be back in full force just in time for the election in November.

I was talking to a friend after Kasich dropped out and we determined this was like a red cape to Jon. No amount of peaceful farm life could keep him from commenting on Donald Trump as the Republican nominee for president.

Casey Bloys, HBO programming chief, discussed the idea of the animated series with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year. This is how he broke it down.

“I talked to Jon before this,” said Bloys, confirming he had the comedian’s blessing to clarify the plans. “He is establishing an animation studio. He wants to get material out on a daily basis. The idea is that it’s an animated parody of a cable news network in an Onion-like portal. It will be his voice, in his actual voice, and his tone.” “Onion-like,” Bloys later clarified, means that there also will be a written component. And, down the line, a half-hour effort on the linear network.

I’m not sure I completely understand what the show will look like but they are using so many words I like – Onion-like, Jon Stewart (in time for the election), HBO – that I can still get really excited. I don’t always agree with Jon, but I do like how he breaks things down. I am sort of glad this is coming later in the election, though. Jon is a biting satirist but as he often reminds us, he is a comedian. I have friends who hold him as the beginning and end to their political thought. I want people to see the naked truth of what has transpired during this election without it being the butt of a joke. However, Jon providing us a balm right before the election will be just what the doctor ordered.

I love Jon Stewart but I can’t stand animated programming for adults. I just think it’s so stupid.
