Courteney Cox: The Brangelina split is ‘not about’ Jennifer Aniston

The endless repositioning of Jennifer Aniston’s fans is pretty amusing. In the immediate wake of the news that Angelina Jolie had filed for divorce, all of the Aniston fans who had been nursing their grudges against Jolie for more than a decade decided to throw a party online. Aniston was trending alongside Brad and Angelina on Twitter, and every media outlet was eager to report what Aniston was allegedly thinking, all according to unnamed sources. And the Aniston-fans ate it all up. They screamed about karma, about justice, about Aniston getting the last laugh. Then they repositioned her within a matter of a few days. Suddenly, she was back to Poor Jen and Why Can’t Anyone Leave Jen Alone and now, Jen Has Nothing To Do With This. Like, these were the same people cackling about Aniston’s Revenge at this time last week. Really?

So the latest Aniston-adjacent person to comment on Brangelina – following Justin Theroux’s comments during his Girl on the Train promotion – is Aniston’s BFF Courteney Cox.

Courteney Cox is expressing her concern over the fact that her close pal and former Friends co-star, Jennifer Aniston, is being dragged into all the drama surrounding Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s shocking divorce. Aniston, who was married to Pitt for five years before they divorced in 2005, has become a focal point following news of the split last week and Cox wants the attention off her bestie.

“I feel like we’re exacerbating it by even talking about it,” the 52-year-old Cougar Town star told ET at Revlon’s Annual Philanthropic Luncheon at Chateau Marmont on Tuesday.

“It’s not about her,” the actress insisted.

[From Entertainment Tonight]

Sure. I get it. It is not about Jennifer Aniston. But maybe direct that to Jennifer’s fans who made it all about her? Because Jennifer really hasn’t said anything – she hasn’t made any comments, she hasn’t given any interviews, and she probably won’t say anything about it for a while. So direct this at the media too, because they insist on dragging Aniston and Aniston-adjacent people into the Brangelina news as well.

Here are some photos of Courteney leaving this Revlon event (the annual philanthropic luncheon) yesterday at the Marmont. I like CC’s glasses, although I think she has Transitions lens.

Sorry, but some random fans on Twitter are not what is driving this story. The JenBrangelina triangle has been a staple for a decade, and there is no way that was not going to be a big part of the tabloid response.

    • Nicole says:

Agreed. Fans aren’t driving the narrative the media is. They have been for years. The memes were hilarious but that’s all they were…memes. The big stories are all written by the tabs and the stories are not about fan reactions. It’s about how Jen supposedly feels blah blah blah. Blame the media.

      • perplexed says:

Yeah, I thought people on Twitter were just attempting humour. I didn’t think a bunch of fans had decided to drag her into it — you see memes all over the place on Twitter about various people and current events (i.e Hillary and Trump and the election). That’s how Twitter works. And they only do it for a day or so until something else takes over — that’s how fast the news moves on Twitter.

For blogs, which discuss the Brangelina and Aniston thing almost every day, to get up in arms about memes seems funny/weird to me. The memes are what make Twitter semi-interesting, aside from the news itself. And it’s more fun seeing Aniston’s face all over there than Trump’s (although the Aniston thing only lasted for a day and I’m now stuck seeing Trump’s annoying mug all over the place again).

      • Lucy2 says:

I think people mentioning her when discussing it was inevitable, but the NY Daily News putting her on the cover, and journalists asking her husband while he is promoting work is out of line. But not surprising.

Which is why I think pointing the finger at the media rather than at fans makes more sense. Fans from either side don’t have any power in terms of what actually gets published in the corporate mainstream. The fans who talk about the split aren’t actually part of the media — they’re doing the same kind of gossiping online that people probably would have done with their neighbours in the kitchen before the internet was invented.

  2. Lilacflowers says:

It isn’t about Anniston’s friends all coming out to say that it isn’t about her but they’re doing it anyway. So thirsty for attention they are.

    • Jenny says:

My thought, too. If they don’t want to feed the situation, wouldn’t it be best to say nothing?

    • perplexed says:

I suspect she was asked about it. If I hadn’t seen George Clooney specifically asked about the split at the UN summit by an older/mature CNN reporter, I probably would have wondered why Clooney was talking about the split at the UN of all places.

    • sophie says:

Like Theroux, Cox was promoting something so the reporter is who brought it up and asked the question. Even if they said no comment some people would have issue with that.

It amazes me that Botox has become so popular. I RARELY see people with work and it makes them look younger or fresher. The vast majority of the time, you can actually tell it’s someone older desperately trying to keep their youth.

  4. Barrett says:

She looks liked she’s doing less fillers and surgery.
I agree it’s low class we need to let the Jen brad thing go at this point….

  5. PGrant's Girl says:

Looking at that vintage pic of Cox and Aniston just makes me sad, because CC was so stunningly gorgeous before she started messing with her face.

    • AbrarAk says:

      Vintage? It looks recent.

    • Nancy says:

Yeah she doesn’t look like her former self anymore. I disagree with those up thread saying she’s thirsty for attention. She has been Jennifer’s friend for decades and feels protective of her. When the media hounds you, sometimes a few words like hers and Justin will shut them up. Jennifer has to be so God awful sick of being in this triangle. Hopefully at last it is over.

      • Kitten says:

Completely agree. At some point, it’s just easier to answer the question once and let twelve tabloids and ten gossip blogs recycle the same answer, instead of just ignoring it and being hounded for months on end.

  6. Almondjoy says:

I’m mad that this even needed to be clarified. I kinda wish everybody would shut up about it. Give that family and especially those children the peace they need at the moment. They have a rough road ahead.

  7. Micki says:

….”“It’s not about her,” the actress insisted”….
God, what a relief to know that! But what a source of “is it or is it not about her?!”…
I guess the next 10 years print run is secured now.

  8. loislane says:

Well if she don’t want it to be exarcerbated by the constant talking, then maybe she herself shouldn’t..you Know talk about it. “No comment” . Here fix it.

  9. Luca76 says:

This is the thing that kept her relevant for so long and it’s always going to be (outside of Friends) the thing she’s most famous for. She put herself in that position years ago (media wise) and I doubt she’s reflective enough to say man I shouldn’t have said x,y, and z to outlets or let my friends comment on my divorce . Her fan base loves her (partly) because of this identity and even though in the last couple of years she made efforts to move on from the ‘poor Jen’ narrative the dye is/was cast. It’s a direct consequence of actions she took years ago that she’s getting dragged into this so publicly.

  10. Babyswans says:

    Very superficial and random comment…
Is anybody else terrified of getting old lady knees? Yes I know, totally superficial, but that last picture reminded me of my weird obsession w preventing old lady knees. She’s not old, it’s just the very rude name I gave knees in my 20s (mature, I know). I just remember that at some point my mom stopped wearing dresses or anything that showed her knees and I think I’m getting close to that age…

    • Kitten says:

You read my mind. I thank you for this because I was feeling like a huge ahole when I saw those pics and started thinking about my knees. Reminded me that I need to keep rocking those short skirts while I can.

      • Beer&Crumpets says:

I’m an a-hole, too. My eyes immediately went her her knees, too. And right after I eyeballed her knees, I inspected my own. I’m pleased to report that my knees are still in decent shape.

    • SpunkyPR says:

I was just thinking the same thing! My knees are looking bad and I’ve either stopped wearing skirts or only wear them below the knees; same with shorts.

  11. Pants says:

It looks like her face has toned down a bit. Hope she leaves it alone, she’s looking much better!

  12. Minxx says:

Who’s dragging Jennifer into it? Most likely Courtney is feeling a bit thirsty these days.

  13. Dani says:

I don’t see why Jennifer has to come out and say anything about this mess, ever. It’s not her marriage, not her kids, not her divorce. In other words, not her monkeys not her circus. She shouldn’t have to object or confirm anything the press/fans are putting out there.

  14. serena says:

Courtney is looking better, I’m glad, she was a botox mess some time ago.
