Cher on the Broadway musical based on her life: ‘It needs work’

This post deals with two of my favorite topics: musical theater and CHER. Over the weekend, the iconic, ageless entertainer (her driver’s license says she’s 72, but I refuse to believe that) was in Chicago to see a preview performance of the musical based on her life, The Cher Show.

The show officially opens on Thursday at Chicago’s Oriental Theater and runs until July 15. After that, the show moves to Broadway’s Neil Simon theater, with previews beginning November 1 and opening night slated for December 3. The show’s website describes it as “35 smash hits, six decades of stardom, two rock-star husbands, a Grammy®, an Oscar®, an Emmy®, and enough Bob Mackie gowns to cause a sequins shortage in New York City, all in one unabashedly fabulous new musical.” I am SO in. Three actresses, with the character names Babe, Lady and Star, portray Cher as she ascends from 60s-era hippie to pop music royalty.

The Cher Show Facebook page featured some photos of the cast meeting the inspiration for the show, noting, “This weekend, we had a visit from the legend herself.” Stephanie J. Block, who plays “Star” Cher tweeted a photo of the singer with all three of her theatrical alter egos, captioning the shot, “There were a few tears after being nose to nose and sharing secrets with the exquisite @cher.”

While the cast is beyond excited about the show, Cher herself is, can we say cautiously optimistic? In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, La Cher pulled no punches, saying, “It needs work. I’m not supposed to say that but I don’t care.” Here’s more of Cher’s comments from the interview:

Cher’s overall thoughts on The Cher Show:
Some parts of it are really fabulous. We’re going to work on the other parts. In many parts, it was much, much better than I thought it would be. And there were no parts where I wanted to gouge my eyes out.

How does she feel about the truthfulness of the show?
I am actually pushing them to be more truthful about me. I’ve already said so much about my life. It would be silly for them to come up with a Mother Teresa.

Giving props to the cast:
I think in some places it’s really good, and I am the most critical person who ever drew breath. If they can impress me, they’re doing good. The girls who play me have so much to do. The lady who plays my mom is great. That’s a very important part. It starts the whole tenor of the project: How my mom treated me as a child. That is why I am how I am who I am now.

Did Cher want to get up on stage herself?
Oh God, no. I still play this character in my concerts. So it’s OK.

[From The Chicago Tribune]

Cher gave lots of notes to the show’s director, and I have a feeling that the show will go through some big changes before it hits the Broadway stage. Hey, it’s gotta be at least better than “Cher: The Unauthorized Rusical” (but I still love you, Kameron). For those of us who can’t afford tickets to see this show, it’s only four weeks until Cher hits the big screen in Mamma Mia 2 (on July 20). I for one am saving my pennies for a Big Apple excursion to see this one – and possibly make it a double feature with Summer: The Donna Summer Musical. My head would explode from the fabulousness.

It's almost showtime! ✨Our lovely Chers met the press yesterday in Chicago!

I saw Cher in Vegas over the Thanksgiving holiday last year, and my God is that woman amazing. I hope I can move like that when I’m 72. She sounded great and can still fit into those Bob Mackie gowns. So I might have to start saving my money too to go to New York and see this.

HER: They say we’re young and we don’t know
We won’t find out until we grow
HIM: Well I don’t know if all that’s true
‘Cause you got me, and baby I got you.

    HIM: Babe
BOTH: I got you babe, I got you babe.

HER: They say our love won’t pay the rent
Before it’s earned, our money’s all been spent
HIM: I guess that’s so, we don’t have a plot
But at least I’m sure of all the things we got

I sang that a couple of days ago. It came into my head out of nowhere.

Cher was very important to me.

Oh I love Cher. I am so excited for this.

I’m kind of laughing over her reaction, but also thinking – did she not want to be involved earlier? it seems kind of mean to see the show three days before its supposed to open in Chicago and be like “yeah it needs work.” Oh well, I guess they still have time to get it right before NYC.

I would happily replace Trump with Cher. In a heartbeat. She is F-CKING amazing and always has been. A legend.

  5. Crowhood says:

I love Love love Cher. If you are looking for a good way to tune out of today’s America i recommend watching Mermaids. Cher is glorious in that movie- and you get baby Wynona and Christina Ricci!

    • rahrahroey says:

I could watch Mermaids every single day for the rest of my life. I adore that movie!!

Raining here today and not much else to do,I’m going to watch this today with my fifteen year old daughter! Thanks for mentioning it!

    • Turtle says:

“Mermaids” is a gem. When I worked a second-run theatre in college, it ran and ran for WEEKS. We couldn’t pry it out of there.

    • nb says:

My Mom and I would watch Mermaids pretty much weekly in the summer when I was growing up. I watched it a few months ago and yep, still awesome! I love Cher’s character in it (so sassy, fabulous and gorgeous!) and Winona and Christina play their roles perfectly.

Also on our summer chick flick list: Grease, Dirty Dancing, and Beaches.

I love Cher I would love to hang out with her just for a day and get some long needed advice about men ☺☺

  6. AB says:

Young Cher looks a lot like young Celine Dion. I never noticed the resemblance before.

  7. Tig says:

I really didn’t read anything too bad-the point of previews/out of town runs is to tweak a show. I was happy to read she loved the performers. And those lucky girls to wear Bob Mackie gowns-! Hope they get to keep one for themselves.

Cher is an amazing talent. I watch Moonstruck whenever I’m feeling low about things in the world. Also, Cher’s twitter is full of gutsy, heartfelt tirades!

  9. Christy J says:

Cher has always meant a lot to me. She reminds me of my mom. I love her in Moonstruck and Mermaids. She’s also amazing in Mask with Eric Stoltz and Sam Elliott. I love her character with Sam Elliott’s.

  10. aa says:

I saw it last Saturday at the matinee in Chicago. I agree with her assessment – parts of it were amazing and parts of it…need work. But all three women playing Cher are FANTASTIC! And the sets and clothes are wonderful.

  11. Riley says:

I have tickets to see this in July and can’t wait!

  12. Yes Doubtful says:

I never cared much for her music, but Cher was a talented actress IMO. Plus an absolutely stunning woman!
