Good lord, the ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ posters are really terrible

ouatih poster

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is still scheduled for a July release. The film will be released just a few weeks after the 50th anniversary of Sharon Tate’s murder by members of the Charles Manson Family. I also expect OUATIH to get a splashy and extra Cannes Film Festival premiere. So, those dates are coming up. It feels like we should have gotten a teaser trailer for the film by now, and there are steady rumors that we’ll get some kind of trailer this week, maybe even today. But for now, Quentin Tarantino has just been releasing the posters for the film.

The posters suck, right? The first one released was the Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio one. Leo plays the movie star and Brad plays his live-in buddy and stunt double (their neighbor is Sharon Tate). Personally, I think this sh-t looks way too modern for 1969. Leo can do period costumes, but I’m not sure if Brad is capable of that anymore, and neither one of them looks particularly “1969.” Plus, as someone tweeted at me yesterday, Brad’s face has been terribly Photoshopped and he looks like he’s been blended with Thomas Haden Church. Now that you’ve seen that, you can’t unsee it.

Then they released the second poster, with Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate. Margot is a pretty woman and she looks more like Sharon Tate than most women, but still… it’s the same problem as Brad and Leo. She looks like Margot Robbie in go-go boots, not Sharon Tate.

I get that the film is about a serious subject – murder, cults – but considering the period, I would have expected something more “fun” from Tarantino for his first posters, you know? This was a moment in Hollywood where you really could have blown it out with styling and done something really special with the posters. The fact that it feels like Tarantino has phoned it on the posters (and the styling) doesn’t give me high hopes for the film.

Someone photoshopped this movie poster with Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey from How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and once I saw that, I couldn’t unsee it, either.

  2. S says:

Margot Robbie looks nothing like Sharon Tate beyond being a white, blonde conventionally attractive woman.

These posters look like off-cuts from the Fast and Furious franchise, bizarrely.

    • velourazure says:

“The 9th film from Quentin Tarantino”?

Who puts that on a movie poster?

    • Josephine says:

Not too many people can look like Sharon Tate. I think Margot Robbie isn’t the worst match, but this doesn’t even look like Margot let alone Sharon Tate.

Just curious, did you have anyone in mind as a better match? I’m kinda blanking on possibilities. Maybe Amanda Seyfried? She has those big eyes.

      • S says:

I know, I was just responding to the whole “…[Margot Robbie] looks more like Sharon Tate than most women…” bit in the article up there!

It’s difficult to cast because, as you say, not many people look like Sharon Tate. Rose Byrne and Julianne Moore have a similar facial thing going on but are too old for the role and thinking of more modern actresses I come up with a complete blank: I think that it’s not really the “in” look at the moment. Tate had a look very much of its time, just as Robbie is very much of this era, so the vast majority of actresses getting work or fame now look more like Robbie than they do Tate or the other actresses of the late 60s.

I do agree that Seyfried would have been a better choice – she has more of a timeless look about her that could span several eras (she didn’t look out of place in Lovelace, for example). Perhaps Mia Goth (with added eyebrows) or Stacy Martin? They have a very 60s feel about them, I think, but are not really a fit in terms of looks. It’s a tricky role to cast!

      • isabelle says:

Tate had those “bedroom” or Betty Davis eyes. She had a unique look even though she was a blond.

      • iman says:

Maybe Samantha Robinson from The Love Witch?

  3. Moxie Remon says:

Margot doesn’t look anything like herself.

    • me says:

      Wait THAT’s Margot???

Also, it’s nice to see they keep the wrinkles on men when doing photoshop. The women always look like cartoons. Double standard per usual.

    • tealily says:

Nothing like herself, and yet it’s like they didn’t even TRY to make her look like Sharon Tate.

  4. Anastasia says:

    These look so amateur!

  5. Vexa says:

Everything about this entire project makes me cringe, up to and including the cheesy-ass title. Brad and Leo just look like a pair of dads trying to be hip…

    • Chaine says:

So true! What age is Brad’s character supposed to be in the movie that he is Leo’s character’s roommate???

      • Tourmaline says:

Seriously, I have questions on this as well!

This whole thing feels cringe tastic even without the gory murder angle

      • Vexa says:

Oh my god it just occurred to me – two grown men… “roommates”… in the 60s….

The only redeemable thing about this will be if it turns out Brad and Leo’s characters are secretly a couple.

  6. jules says:

    someone had fun with photoshop!

  7. Doodle says:

I feel like there’s a bad photoshop job going on with Margo’s leg that is straight, not the next one. It looks weird… maybe her leg real is that skinny but it looks to me like somebody tried to thin out her leg and did a poor job.

    • mtam says:

I see what you mean, it’s like they scooped out a bit of her right leg behind the knee in order for the other leg to show behind. And the left leg above the knee seems to have the upper thigh slimmed down terribly.

    • S says:

I think they went to town with the photoshop on Margot because she’s playing a known person who she doesn’t really look much like: Tate was more willowy in build than Robbie, hence the slimming down/lengthening the leg photoshopping they’ve done there, plus they’ve done something weird around Robbie’s nose and profile too.

  8. Case says:

I think the posters are purposefully bad, actually.

I know I’m in the minority but I (quietly) enjoy Tarantino films and also like Leo and Brad Pitt as actors (not as people), so I’m looking forward to this.

    • Jegede says:

      Same.👍👍

I think it’ telling that there’s no ‘starring’; ‘featuring’ e.t.c on the poster just pics.

You have 2 huge superstars and that sells it alone.

Plus, considering the tragic back story incorporated in OUAT, maybe less is more.

      • Lady D says:

Those superstars also include Kurt Russell, Al Pacino, Timothy Olyphant, Tim Roth, Emil Hirsch, Bruce Dern and on and on. Someone said there were 100 stars making appearances in this movie. You can check out the full cast at IMDB.

    • Harryg says:

I think so too, but they should have been just a tad worse to work.

    • Alyse says:

I’m a Tarantino fan, I’m here for these. I agree that they’re meant to be shoddy looking … as every Tarantino poster is.
Als,o I too like Leo, Brad & Margot (and many other cast members) as actors. (Actually, Margot seems awesome in general)

I feel a bit torn over the subject… I’m over glamourising violence against females and glorifying serial killers. BUT I’ll wait to see the film before I make my judgement.

  9. Jess says:

Ugh. I was an early Tarantino fan but the issues with Uma and his obsession with violence against women has turned me off. And at this point Leo and Brad are both pathetic jokes so this whole thing seems like a sad little MRA wet dream. No interest. Just disgust.

    • cee says:

I could not agree more. As people Pitt , DiCaprio and Tarantino are lacking. Hope they do a better job with the film.

    • Astrid says:

      +1

    • Sue Denim says:

Totally agree about Tarantino…disgusting how he treated Uma, and as others have said about the photoshopping, once you see that you can’t unsee it…

  10. Alexandria says:

I can’t recognise Margot and Brad’s face looks weird. I think it’s his nose. Seems like Quentin’s style which I don’t care for at this point.

  11. Mia4s says:

Good lord there is serious money behind this movie; why do these look like tumblr photoshops?

Oh I see Emile Hirsch is in the cast, has he tried to choke any random women to death in public recently? (F**k him and Tarantino).

  12. Lala11_7 says:

Angela Basset looks NOTHING like Tina Turner…but I can think of no one better to have played her in a biopic….they have that same energy….

Do Robbie have the same energy as Sharon? Well…from an acting standpoint…and I’ve seen everything both actresses have done…Robbie can act her tail off…Sharon? Well….she isn’t a compelling presence on the screen….but I think she was self-aware of that fact…or the producers/directors who hired her was aware of that….

    So…it’s a wait and see thang…

I think Brad Pitt in that poster looks absolutely unappealing…so I’m cool with the poster…

    • mia girl says:

I know that Margo Robbie is a really good actress, and at this point, I seek out movies she is in.
And still, every time, I am still so impressed by just how great an actress she is. Just watched Mary Queen of Scots over the weekend and she was goooood (even with the fake nose)

  13. lucy2 says:

Yuck to all of it. I still wish Margot hadn’t signed onto this, I like her. But after what Uma revealed, no one, especially women, should be lining up to work with Tarantino. Plus the whole thing is exploiting the real murders of several people. Gross all around.

  14. line says:

The actress who get closer physically to Sharon Tate is Rose Byrne but she too old for hollywood.

  15. line says:

8 years ago, if Tarantino, Dicaprio and Pitt announce that they were making a movie together everyone would enthusiasm .But now no, they are all three terrible in their’ private life and surfing about the horrible murder of a woman to make money without worrying about the family’s reaction is just ashamed.

    • Lisa says:

That’s not true. maybe on this site. But there are many people excite for this movie and these actors working together. Even if the posters here are “boycotting the film”.

I and many others are excited and looking forward to seeing the movie. Sharon’s sister is not against the film and has been quoted as being supportive. If she is fine with it then that’s enough for me.

  16. Michelle says:

The more important question why wasn’t Tarantino cancelled? He knew about Weinstein early on from his own girlfriend & ignored it. His treatment of women in his films is very problematic, he hires known abusers, his famous foot fetish in all his films, he’s close friends with & called him ‘his mentor’ Polanski. Most disturbing he thinks a 13yr rape victim “wanted it”. How much more disgusting behaviour will be tolerated?

  17. BeanieBean says:

On what planet can Brad Pitt be Leo’s stand-in? And go-go boots were shorter. Agree with the photo-shop job on Brad, he’s THC’s twin. And it’s weird that my lightweight comment follows Michelle’s above. She’s very on-point.

    • mtam says:

Stand-ins and stunt doubles are very different jobs. Stand-ins do need to resemble the person they are imitating a little bit, mostly in height or build, or sometimes facial profile, but that’s all also mostly accomplished with hair & make-up and wardrobe.

Stunt doubles don’t necessarily have to look like the actors at all, or even be the of the same sex, most times they try to not shoot the faces or hide it with strategic shadows or accessories like hats, helmets etc. Sometimes they have to wear doubles of what the actor they are doubling for wear, but sometimes they wear special gear to protect themselves and don’t have to wear the same wardrobe at all (ex. in those cases when it’s silhouette, or faraway shots, or the strategic lighting/shadows).

  18. Coool? says:

Hopefully the movie is better than the poster 🙂

  19. anp says:

Why would anyone want support QT and Pitt films? Who would buy BP being a so called stunt man in the film.

  20. ElleKaye says:

I like the print in Pitt’s shirt. It reminds me of an old tablecloth.

  21. Fluffy Princess says:

Look at Brad’s face!! OLD. They couldn’t photoshop that better? Hahahaha! And DiCaprio? Ew. Just no.

  22. Hmmm says:

i predict Tarantino will lose his shit if critics don’t love this like they love his other movies. He no longer has Harvey Weinstein to pay people to like stuff so uh oh. Should be interesting how this goes.

I’m hoping it does well for Angelina Jolie’s sake. If it flops her ex will attack her in the media non stop to distract from his flop and plus he needs to pay child support.

  23. Valerie says:

I love Pacino, but this looks like crap.

  24. KatieBo says:

The Manson Murders were August 9th, 1969, so the release will be in the weeks BEFORE the anniversary!

  25. Myrtle says:

I, for one, am boycotting this exploitative flick. I was just a 9-year-old kid, but I remember the horror of these murders being reported on TV, and Charlie Sicko Manson trials, etc. Not cute at all.

    • brutalethyl says:

I was 9 then too I remember the entire country being so horrified and even at my age I could almost feel the shift from trust and innocence to suspicion and evil

Charles Manson is burning where he needs to burn

  26. Laura-j says:

And if this is about the murders wasn’t Sharon Tate 9 months pregnant?… clearly that’s not ‘hot’ enough for the poster… gawd.

  27. detritus says:

It’s like Tarantino asked the actors to dress and style themselves. Robbie is the best look of the bunch, and her makeup is still pretty off. Case upthread mentioned it looking bad on purpose and that’s got to be it. I mean, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen Leo look so out of place, the self hover hand has to be new.

  28. brutalethyl says:

When I saw that first poster I honestly thought that was Chevy Chase (circa Caddyshack) propped against that uh *whatever it is they’re supposed to be propped up against*

I don’t intend to ever see this exploitative POS but the posters are crap

  29. Amy Tennant says:

If you’re interested in the summer of Manson as it relates to Hollywood, I recommend the excellent You Must Remember This podcast’s coverage.

  30. JANAK says:

Either DICaprio’s been on Keto for 6 months or they Photoshopped 25 lbs off his dad bod.
