Zendaya doesn’t know what to do when she’s not working: ‘I hate spare time’

Kanye West handles business in New York City

Zendaya covers the latest issue of British Vogue, mostly to promote Dune, but she’s also talking about Spider-Man: No Way Home and Euphoria. It’s a great photoshoot, but then Zendaya is beautiful, young and photogenic. Zendaya sounds like she’s in a good place right now, she works a lot and that’s what she prefers, but she’s starting to treat herself when it counts. She’s also, by all accounts, extremely popular within the industry, and there is a huge list of costars, directors and producers singing her praises in this Vogue piece. Some highlights from her interview:

She hates not working: “I hate spare time. I just don’t know what I’m doing when I’m not working. I’m like, I don’t know what this [and here the actor waves her hands over her body] is.”

Her five-carat yellow diamond from Bulgari: “This is my splurge, my treat-myself. I do get a little employee discount. It feels like it’s gonna be an heirloom, like one day I can give it to my grandchildren.”

Getting the part in Dune: “Before they were even looking at people, I heard about it. And I was like, ‘I really want to get in the room.’ They weren’t looking in my direction. And I was like, ‘Hey, I’m here!’”

Timothee Chalamet became her BFF: “I was the only other person closer to his age on the cast. So he was like, ‘Awesome, someone who understands my jokes!’” They threw dance parties in her trailer. “He just rolled up with his little boom box,” she laughs, and would play “2000s dance songs like Soulja Boy”. “He’s obviously a very talented actor, but just a wonderful person and a good friend to have. Especially in this industry, it’s nice to have other people who are going through it too and that you can talk to.”

On therapy: “Yeah, of course I go to therapy. I mean, if anybody is able to possess the financial means to go to therapy, I would recommend they do that. I think it’s a beautiful thing. You know, there’s nothing wrong with working on yourself and dealing with those things with someone who can help you, someone who can talk to you, who’s not your mom or whatever. Who has no bias.”

She has an archive of designer clothes. “I want to reuse my clothes. I want to be able to wear that dress again when I’m 40 and be like, ‘This old thing?’ Really finding good vintage pieces that I want to invest my money in.”

Disney stardom: “I remember being on Shake It Up and being like, ‘I’m not gonna do this. I’m going to kiss him on the cheek because I haven’t been kissed yet so I don’t want the kiss to be on camera.”

Homebody Virgo: Anyway, she’s not out shutting down Hollywood clubs, she’s a homebody who spends her time watching movies and listening to true-crime podcasts. During lockdown, she started painting – her Euphoria co-star Hunter Schafer bought her some oils. “If it’s not f**king Picasso first time I do it, I’m upset about it,” she says of getting to grips with the pastime. For those astrologically inclined: yes, she is a perfectionist Virgo.

A Virgo Queen, just like me and Beyonce. Virgos are The Moment! I can’t even imagine being her age and already having enough designer pieces to create an archive. Archives are, canonically, a Virgo thing too. She also tells Vogue that she basically begged everyone for a meeting for Dune, then on her first meeting/audition, she completely knocked it out of the park and she had the role then and there. I wonder if Tom Holland is jealous of her friendship with Timothee. Hm….

I’m sure Tom Holland had a word with Timothee before the press tour because he didn’t put his hands on Zendaya once on the red carpet.

    • Emily says:

I dislike the idea of a possessive boyfriend having words. Zendaya decides who touches her and maybe she had a word with Timothee?

Anyone who hates down time is not comfortable being alone or with themselves. Spare time and relaxation are so important.

I absolutely LOVE spare time and doing nothing. If only I could get paid for it……..

    • Snuffles says:

True, but she clearly also loves her work.

Wow -that was true for me anyway. In college if i wasnt in class or completing school projects i was at work, so after college i had more free time and didnt know what to do with myself. Growing up in was in sports constantly and looking back that was more about socializing than anything so i really was never alone. I joined sports to avoid being alone really. After college i realized down time wasnt really handled well by my parents either, but at the time i took it for granted. I didnt remember them having hobbies friends etc or talking about those things either so it was a skill i needed to learn. They just wanted to be alone and didn’t include me or my siblings in their down time. It was pretty isolating really.
But im still surprised at the number of adults who wont go to the movies or the gym alone and talk about how uncomfortable and weird they fear it would look. Really? That sounds clingy honestly

She is stunning in these photos, but she’s always stunning. She looks great in everything too. It’s not fair, LOL! But she also seems to be a really cool, smart person too.
I’m not really interested in Dune, but will probably watch it at some point.

If you sign up for HBO Max right now they are doing it for $7.99 a month for six months. You could sign up watch Dune on HBO Max on Oct 22nd then cancel and spend way less money than you would if you had gone to theaters. Plus you would get to stay home in your pjs with wine and sushi. Which is my personal plan.

I like the way she wants to build a collection of designer dresses so she can wear them again when she’s 40… I feel old! 🙂

  5. Merricat says:

She’s young, and she has that effortless youthful energy. I hope she is as busy as she wants to be for as long as she wants.

Tom has nothing to be jealous of. Timothee not only doesn’t want any rumors with Zendaya, like he was very careful to not touch her but he was even bringing up Tom himself during the promo for Dune lol. It’s obvious dude wants no part in any Tomdaya drama lmao and with the way his career is going why would he?

I’m so glad that she seems to have escaped the Disney curse when it comes to child stardom. I’m sure it helps that her parents seemed more protective (I remember reading that her father used to chaperone her dates when she was still underage) than exploitative, like Lohan’s awful parents. She’s bright, beautiful, talented and seems to have a good head on her shoulders. I hope her star only continues to rise.

  8. Barbie1 says:

Another great cover. Beautiful and glamourous.

  9. Marlina says:

She’s charming and comes across well….

But, to preface, I’m a light skinned Black woman like Zendaya so I’m speaking from experience in a way…but I honestly sort of think that colorism has helped her career tremendously and she’s a blatant example of how it works in Hollywood for Black women who deal with colorism.

I was just thinking of this because I’ve been reading the reviews of Dune and critics point out Rebecca, Timothee, Jason, Oscar and she barely gets a mention for the most part or it’s like “she’s fine.” Outside of Euphoria, I don’t think she’s ever really received more than “eh, she’s okay” from the critics. Her singing isn’t anything special, either, so I find it fascinating this she’s the actress Hollywood has decided to turn into the next “It” girl versus say Keke Palmer who is only a few years older & has a tremendous voice & whose acting has been more acclaimed…but is also far darker.

    • brubs says:

she doesn’t have a big role in Dune that’s why they don’t really mention her

    • Col says:

I agree with you but in addition to that she’s also arguably the most beautiful woman in Hollywood (look how good her make up looks on the cover) with possibly the best stylist colab going on as well. Her stylist is on a mission with her in a way the other stars don’t have.

Her transition form disney starlet to young hollywood A lister should be studied and emulated. flawless.
