Teyana Taylor in Iris Van Herpen at the Met Gala: dramatic?

Iris Van Herpen is a Dutch designer known for her dramatic, structural looks. She’s worked a lot with Lady Gaga, so enough said. She was one of the first to use 3D printing in fashion. She dressed several people at the Met Gala and each brought the drama.

Teyana Taylor was serving face in her flowing blue/indigo/violet gown. This reminded me (and LaLa Anthony) of nighttime ocean waves and the colors were beautiful. To offset the flowy bottom, the top half of the dress was more structured with the bold shoulders and bust/bodice cutouts. Teyana’s thorny golden headpiece, with dark and light purple jewels, framed/encased her face. I’m guessing it was 3D printed? Honestly, that thing looks a little scary to put on and take off, but beauty is pain. I like the matching eye makeup and then the bold brow and neutral lip. This look had a lot going on with the dress and headpiece so the hair and makeup and minimal accessories were perfect. I think the headpiece brings this on theme.

Winnie Harlow also looked like a seashell or flower that was plucked from the ocean. This reminds me of a blooming flower that’s also aflame. The detailing in the middle of the dress and her headpiece reminds me of fire. This is very avant garde! I really like the spiky lashes; they make Winnie’s eyes pop. Minimal makeup, tightly pulled hair, and matching rings so as not to distract from the dress and headpiece. I usually wouldn’t like the pointy white pumps — too 80s bridal for me — but they work with this dress.

Sorry, I had to Google Dove Cameron. She looks like a super young European model, but she’s actually a mid-twenties actress/singer and former Disney star. It’s her first Met Gala. I typically don’t like white dresses with the nude underlay because I think they look like figure skating costumes, but the structural aspect of this one makes it better. Apparently, the dress took 600 hours to make. I like the neckline and winged arms are pretty cool, but look easy enough to move/maneuver in. In some pics there’s something weird going on underneath her dress — like she has on a nude bodysuit with the crotch unsnapped and it’s just dangling. I like that her hair is spiked into matching wings where it’s pulled back and like Teyana, her makeup complements the look perfectly.

Fredrik Robertsson was misidentified as Jared Leto by media outlets and fans alike. I guess I can kind of  see it in the face, but this man looks more rested and like he might have a soul. Anyway, Fredrik is a Swedish creative director of some sort and “couture client.” Sounds like a fancy description for high-end shopper, which sounds fun. He wore a spikily structural ombre/color gradient outfit with high-waisted grey satin pants on the bottom. Again, avant garde. He looked cool, like a spiky butterfly or amoeba or something. His hair was bleached blond and he had gradient eye makeup and what looks like pearls glued around his eyes. Fredrik > Jared’s whole schtick for sure.

I kind of love these looks but they are not on theme at all, right?

Anyway I’m living for the shade thrown at Jared Leto haha

    • BeeCee says:

Agreed. I found them to be really cool and very avant garde, but not on theme at all.

No, I don’t see as on theme at all. They have basically gone rogue! Though I will admit that I love the colors of Teyana Taylor’s gown. It’s beautifully made and it must look better as she moves. As for Dove Cameron, I have to agree with Peridot that it looks like her bodysuit has unsnapped…

I am so happy this isn’t Jared Leto! When I saw the look I immediately thought, “NAILED IT”, and then saw the misidentification and went “womp womp”.

The little intro picture of just Teyana’s face with that headpiece was scary. The first thing that came to mind for me was Anthony Hopkins playing Hannibal Lechter!!
