Taiki Waititi & Rita Ora are engaged & planning a lowkey wedding ‘abroad’

When Rita Ora and Taika Waititi first got together last year, it felt like it was just a pandemic hookup, right? Meaning, they were both available and in the right place at the right time (in locked-down Australia) and thought “why not?” Eighteen months later and I guess I was wrong! They’re still happening and they seem pretty serious about each other. They’re constantly on red carpets and attending big events together. They’re still such an odd couple to me, but sure. Apparently, they’re loosely engaged and planned to have some lowkey wedding sometime soon.

Singer Rita Ora has got engaged to film director Taika Waititi — after they made almost “simultaneous” wedding proposals to each other. Oscar-winner Taika, 46, and party girl Rita, 31, are now preparing a low-key ceremony soon before a glitzy celebration later in the summer.

A pal said: “This isn’t about them doing a big showy thing and crowing about it beforehand. It’s just about them being in love and deciding the time is right to formalise their relationship. They couldn’t be happier.”

Pop star and actress Rita is currently working on several film projects and is also a coach on The Voice Australia. Meanwhile, New Zealander Taika is planning a string of movies, including a new addition to the Star Wars franchise. The imminent nuptials are set to take place as soon as their work commitments end.

The pal adds: “They didn’t do a whole, ‘Will you marry me?’ thing and an Instagram post. There’s no ring or big build-up. They just got closer and closer and eventually said to each other almost simultaneously, ‘I want to marry you’. It’s actually really romantic and just exactly the way they are together. So the plan is to marry abroad, as soon as their respective projects end, with their closest friends and family around them. And then there will be a big celebration in London at a later stage, when they get the chance, with all their famous friends there. But for now it’s about getting down the aisle and making things official. There are a few details to iron out, but it’s coming soon and it’ll be beautifully intimate and perfectly them.”

Rita is good at leaking these kinds of stories to British tabloids and Taika seems fine with it, so be it. I had the wrong assumption about their whole energy and I know that now. I also think Taika is really in his midlife-crisis era – he’s 46 – and his answer has been to go full-on celebrity with Rita.

I think we all know how this is going to end but congrats to them anyways.

    • LEvans says:

YES!!! See the ending a mile away but congrats and maybe we’re all wrong…but not likely!

  2. Anne says:

Great that they are happy. I can’t help but be sad for the amazing NZ power couple Taika and Chelsea Winstanley were, and what a gorgeous family they had. Chelsea was also with Taika before he hit mainstream success, so unfortunately I can’t look at him without thinking, ugh, yet another stereotypical dude going through a midlife crisis.

    • Jenny says:

I had no idea it was separated from his wife. Had to Google. This is one of those secretly separated jobs to make it look getting with Rita look less sleazy.ick. Well, best of luck to them.

  3. Coco says:

I think this relationship will last as long as they don’t have kids or thing don’t get to “domestic”.

They seem to enjoy and thrive of the carefree, party vibe they have going on.

  4. Mary Tosti says:

    Ugh. I can’t with him.

  5. CherHorowitz says:

These guys like to take drugs toģether I reckon. That’s all I’ve got.

  6. Plums says:

At least she’s in her thirties?

  7. Chloe says:

I have such conflicting feelings … what a mess … what a good looking man …

  8. girl_ninja says:

If they make it work, good for them. I don’t like her at all since her snide unnecessary shade at Duchess Meghan. Why does she always need a man to make her newsworthy?

  9. Margot says:

They are both really good looking but their features are so similar to me. Brother-sister couple!

    • EnormousCoat says:

I am part of such a couple, though my husband denies that we look alike. However, multiple people have pointed it out – including my mother, ack! – and now I can’t unsee it. There’s definitely been research into it and we humans seem to like what’s familiar. But maybe this will lead to marriage success for them lol.

      • mosia says:

there has been interesting research about that and as well about those choices and use of contraception, apparently women tend to chose partners with more similar genetic makeup when taking contraception. it’s fascinating

    • Emmy Rae says:

      That’s what I thought!!

  10. teecee says:

They didn’t announce via Instagram, but through a tabloid leak. (eyeroll) SO LOWKEY.

  11. Kate says:

Given how not lowkey they have been otherwise, I can’t imagine that they will have a lowkey wedding. And I hope they don’t, a spectacle would be much more fun to witness.

  12. Jonesy says:

    Her???

    • JJS says:

      Second. Her??

      • antipodean says:

More to the point…HIM????? He is a walking, giant-sized, mid life crisis embarrassment, who is far too self involved and important to ever be part of a long term, healthy relationship. …..NEXT!

  13. Cinders says:

What is “almost simultaneously” meant to mean? Surely it actually means “NOT simultaneously”?
Weird, the whole thing. Not a celeb thing/big announcement, just a big splash in the press and a party for “all their famous friends”.

  14. London Lozza says:

Honestly, in a world filled with such misery right now, I’m just happy for a happy story!

  15. Eggbert says:

They’re one of those couples that looks like siblings to me.

  16. ΝΞΞΝΔ ΖΞΞ says:

Uh… he strikes me as a really talented guy (writer, actor, comedian, director) who likes to slum. I only know her from Fug Madness. She’s pretty, but does she have any skills or is it just about getting papped?

They actually seem quite in sync to me, at least from the photos. Much luck.

    • TIFFANY says:

For what it is worth, Rita is a decent singer. The few songs I have heard were okay.

Being a pap target seems to pay the bills more being a singer.

  17. TIFFANY says:

Is he even legally divorced yet?

Or is this gonna be one of those ‘spiritual’ marriages.

  18. outoftheshadows says:

I really like Reservation Dogs, and I believe he’s a producer and writer on that show. I know nothing about his personal life and how messy that may or may not be, but I’m here for his content and his promotion of Native American talent.

  19. Scotchy says:

Ugh I dislike Rita and her black fishing ways. This whole union seems messy and just ugh to me but hey whatever. I do love how she was referred to as “party” girl in the press. Haaa
