Travis Kelce did not win the Super Bowl. The Kansas City Chiefs got their asses handed to them by the Philadelphia Eagles, and it felt like most of the internet was laughing at them. Taylor Swift even got booed! Anyway, Travis is okay-ish, judging from the latest New Heights podcast. Travis seemed really sad, but he also seemed like a 30-something man who is dealing with the loss in a mature way. He gave some indications of the big choice he has to make now – play for one more year or just retire from football and go all-in on his post-NFL career. Speaking of, the NYT reports that the Chiefs are giving Travis until mid-March to make up his mind about what’s next.
The Kansas City Chiefs are hoping Travis Kelce, their star tight end, decides to remain with the team for the 2025 season, which could be the last in his illustrious career. If Kelce chooses to retire, the Chiefs, as they head into an intriguing offseason, want to know of his decision around March 14, according to a team source. Based on the deadline, the Chiefs are going to give Kelce a month to decide his future.
Kelce’s contract, which runs through next season, includes an $11.5 million roster bonus that is due March 15, according to Over The Cap. The NFL’s free agency period begins March 10.
“That process can be grueling,” Kelce said on a recent episode of his “New Heights” podcast, discussing the wear a Super Bowl run puts on an older player. “It can weigh on you. It can make you better and it could drive you crazy at the same time. Right now, it’s one of those things where it was kind of driving me crazy this year, and I think that it happens as you tail off toward the back nine of your career, as (Scott Van Pelt) would say.”
The Times had more details about Travis’s football career and what a workhorse he is for the team. If he chooses to retire, the Chiefs will be in bad shape trying to replace him, basically. As for the money… I’ve never understood football or basketball contracts, so I won’t speak to his contract. I do know that his sponsorships would probably continue even in retirement, if Tom Brady is any indication. Travis is making millions from sponsorships, and given his level of fame and his Hall of Fame career, sponsors will still embrace the good-looking white guy. Plus, he will be able to make so much money by transitioning to Hollywood and entertainment.

Yeah but… is he actually good at the Hollywood stuff? I saw him on saturday night live. He is good for a football player but he needs to be playing football to be graded on that curve. I don’t think he’s got the charisma or talent to maintain a long career. He is no Marshawn Lynch.
I mean considering it was the first time he’d done live tv that wasn’t an interview I think it speaks to raw ability there. He would have to keep working on it to improve, for sure.
Also Marshawn and Jameis Winston is now a duo I want to see doing anything, but especially a travel show 😂
Even if Travis just sticks to podcasting with his brother and gets some commenting gigs, he’ll be more than fine financially and probably have enough going on to be busy. Acting might not be his full thing, but if someone as grating as some of the sports ppl are can make money in the sports world, he can for sure do that.
I don’t get how many wins are enough for these guys to retire happily. There is no lack of opportunities for Travis. Just go and retire while still physically okay. He is already doing lots of side gigs, so it isn’t like he is gonna get bored.
Agreed. He’s accomplished everything a player could ever wish to achieve in the sport. He should quit while he’s ahead and in good health (especially his brain health).
He’s got numerous options.
His mom once said brother Jason would retire when his body told him to and that Travis would have to be dragged out of the building kicking and screaming!
I get the feeling he’ll retire. (hope he does before he gets seriously hurt). He looked heart-sick in post-Super Bowl interviews and is probably trying decide whether he could physically improve his game by next season. He’s not happy with how he’s played recently. I think he’s feeling his age
He does love playing the game and everything about it. He’d be a good coach, but I can’t see him tying himself down to that kind of commitment or schedule. Maybe just holding his yearly camp for running backs will be enough.
