Cate Blanchett wore leather Givenchy to the NYC ‘Black Bag’ premiere: hot or not?

It feels like Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender have worked together a million times, but they really haven’t. Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag is the first time they’ve worked together on-screen, and they play a married couple where both husband and wife are black-op spies of some variety. Both Cate and Michael are doing hinky British accents too, how fun. It’s like “what if Mr. and Mrs. Smith was super-serious?” I’m including the trailer at the end of this post.

Last night was the big New York premiere. Cate Blanchett for a fresh-off-the-runway Givenchy Fall 2025 look in black leather. Get it, because the movie is called “black bag?” I’m not really a fan of this look – it’s too dated, too “leather mama,” too overkill. Meanwhile, Fassy looked… odd. That coat is too big and he wore his sunglasses on the carpet. Still, I will check this out – both Cate and Michael are very good at having chemistry with their on-screen partners, and I absolutely hope that there are some sexy spy games.

Incidentally, I’ve watched some of Fassy’s Showtime series, The Agency. He also plays a spy in that one, a spy with secrets, mostly involving secrets about his affair with Jodie Turner Smith’s character. Fassbender took four years off from the industry and came back and booked all of these spy roles.

This looks good! I like Soderbergh’s stuff. But their posh British accents sound rubbish in the trailer! I love Fassbender but The Agency was nearly unwatchable — terrible. But his film The Killer was more enjoyable. I do love the spy thrillers.

For a minute there I was wondering, wasn’t Black Dove already out there…oh, Black Bag. But wasn’t Cate in Black Dove? No, Nicole Kidman…no, Keri Russell…no Keira Knightly. So many angular women with grim Jaws and high cheekbones…

Not a fan of the top portion of the dress. It looks like a failed attempt to do something different.

I’m gonna say yes to any bottom in leather/pleather because the winter has been so rough this year: wearing leather blocks the wind and the cold which makes me soooo happy

I wasn’t impressed with Cate’s outfit, Michael’s suit coat was too long – stripes on a coat that length don’t even suit very tall men, let alone a man of average height. Naomi looked stunning, and (not pictured here) Regé-Jean Page looked gorgeous too.

I love both actors! They are on a shrinking list of actors who are the ‘real deal’ in their craft. Not to mention–Regé-Jean Page and Pierce Brosnan? I am SO seeing this! 🙂

Movie trailer is a bit meh.

Fassbender gives off young Michael Caine vibes especially with those glasses, Pierce a bit of Chuck. Cate as red-haired siren. There’s a lack of tension between the couple so not Mr and Mrs Smith for me. Almost like a Roger Moore Bond film.

Cate looks uncomfortable in that leather outfit though it must keep her warm.
