Hailee Steinfeld is having a good year. She started off 2025 newly-engaged after her boyfriend, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, popped the question in a late November proposal that had lots of production value! And Hailee has a new movie coming out in a couple weeks — Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler and also starring Michael B. Jordan. With all her good fortune, I appreciate that Hailee has also been taking the time to advocate for important health issues. In February, she crossed off a bucket list wish of being in a Super Bowl commercial, when she appeared in a Novartis ad alongside Wanda Sykes to promote early detection for breast cancer. Now, Hailee is talking about her strict dedication to protecting her skin with sunscreen, a habit she’s hoping to instill in her future hubby:
During an overarching conversation about caring for her hair and skin with Glamour, Hailee Steinfeld shared a sweet tidbit about Josh Allen. She revealed that he has his own hair and skincare routine on lock. However, when it comes to sunscreen, it’s a different story, as she explained:
“Luckily, he’s into hair care and skin care, so he’s got his whole little deal figured out, so that’s an area I can’t help [others] in. And then also trying to get him to wear SPF, you know what I’m saying?”
First of all, we need to get all men on a hair and skincare regiment, and I love that the football player already has one. That’s a major green flag. However, the guy needs to understand how important SPF is. Thankfully, it sounds like this is a hill his fiancée is willing to die on, which is honestly so real and relatable of her.
Notably, sunscreen is something the Hawkeye actress is passionate about. So, I get why she’s willing to put up a loving battle with Josh Allen over it. To put that passion into context, when asked for a beauty rule she swears by, Steinfeld said:
“I don’t leave the house without SPF and have it in every bag and car. It’s got to be everywhere. So if there’s ever a world in which I forget about it at the end of my morning routine, it’s like I’ve left myself with no choice but to grab it somewhere because it’s got to be there. As far back as I can remember, my mom has been such a champion for wearing SPF, and thank God. What a difference it makes.”
How can Josh be a professional football player, out on the field all the time, and not use sunscreen?! Thank goodness he has Hailee to slap some SPF sense into him! But I suppose I’m one to talk, since I’m not as consistent as I should be at using sunscreen in my regular routine. I am positively maniacal, however, when on vacation. I was in the Dominican Republic last month and was uber serious about protecting my skin. How serious? I coughed up an exorbitant $34 on an 8 oz bottle at the hotel, after the same-sized bottle I packed was confiscated by the TSA at JFK. (To be fair, they did offer me the chance to check the single bottle on its own, separate from my carry-on bag, which I declined to do. Because checking one bottle of sunscreen is insane.) Then for my daily vacay regimen, I never left the hotel room without dousing myself head-to-toe, and I opted for what I call “Mennonite chic” swimwear: full-length swim pants, a tankini top, and a long-sleeve rashguard jacket over that. Plus a wide-brimmed visor, and blanketing myself under towels when sitting beach or poolside. And I’d reapply the SPF after any dips in the water. Did I look like a freak? Yes! But did I get burned? Well, still yes, in a weird patch along my hairline. But overall my efforts were a success! So yeah, I fully acknowledge that I need to bring this same vigilance to everyday, and I thank Hailee for the suggestion to have stuff already in my purse. Maybe I’ll leave some at my office, too.

Ok now I need more details on this “check one bottle of sunscreen” story! Were they just gonna slap a luggage tag sticker on it and throw it in the hull with all the other baggage and charge you $35 for it? I kinda wish you had done it just so I could find out how that would have worked…
Same! I’m obsessed with sunscreen. I’m also using retinol so I have to apply and reapply my sunscreen religiously every two hours. I have found a very good matte korean suncreen that I absolutely adore.
Really?! Can you tell us the name of the sunscreen, pretty please?
Not Korean but the brand SVR makes very good matte sunscreens. I have the most sensitive skin and I never got any reaction from that brand.
Hi , can you please tell me the name of your Korean sunscreen .
I’m sensitive to alot of the face sunscreens so I’m always looking for new brands to try . Thankyou
I Always put on sunscreen before going outside. Ca lot of them layer nicely with makeup now so it is just part of my routine,
I am a sunscreen evangelist, trying to get people to take it seriously all day long. You need more than you think too. About a tablespoon for the face and neck. An easy way to measure is to squeeze out the product from root to tip of your first and second fingers. I’ve been loving AXIS-Y Complete No-Stress Physical Sunscreen lately! And ELF All Set For Sun for re-application over makeup. I’ll pay more for a face sunscreen that doesn’t feel like ass on my skin though.
Sunscreen and antioxidants all day everyday and you’re going to see such a difference.
This is just a heads up:
Some sunscreens’ active ingredients like oxybenzone and avobenzone, can degrade with exposure to high temperatures from sitting in the car, particularly during warm months. It can essentially break down, so it’s like rubbing tanning oil on your skin.
which is exactly why I don’t keep any in my car, although it would be super convenient to have it there. I also think you need to have it on your skin for a few minutes before exposure, but not sure
I can’t find a sunscreen that doesn’t feel like it’s melting off my face and getting into my eyes and mouth in the summer, unless it’s the thick white stick kind. So my solution is to instead wear a brimmed hat on sunny days, and a wide brimmed hat every day in the summer. If anyone has recommendations for good face sunscreen, please share?
I can’t make any recs yet, but I just ordered some from sokoglam–we shall see! Been using cerave bc it works well, doesn’t slide off, and doesn’t bug my eyes, BUT I do look like a mime. Perhaps cerave makes a clear spf? I have heard that products from south korea or australia are better than those made in the US are
I’ve been using Paula’s Choice Skin Restoring Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 50 for years now and I LOVE it. I need a moisturizer with SPF vs. SPF/screen only because my skin is so dry. It’s spendy ($34 for 2 oz., but 15% off if you subscribe), so I only use it on my face/neck/hands, then use a regular sunscreen on the rest of my body.
It’s only available online, which is kind of bummer, but it’s worth it. It feels like regular lotion, doesn’t leave a white cast (I have medium-tan skin, so that’s a huge win), and it doesn’t smell like anything. When I use it around my eye area, I wait for it to sink in, then lightly dust the same area with foundation powder to keep it from sliding into my eyes. (It does sting if it gets in your eyes.)
I live in Buffalo (Go Bills! We love Josh and Hailee!) where we don’t see much sun and we drive everywhere so I don’t carry it around with me. In the summer I’ll apply it before I leave the house if I know I’ll be walking outdoors a lot. But it wasn’t until I started visiting LA regularly when my sister moved there that I realized you really do need to keep sunscreen with you at all times. Hailee is from LA so that’s probably second nature to her. But yeah, Josh is from California too so what’s up, MVP?
I’ve been getting better about sunscreen application. In Colorado so higher altitude, higher sun intensity! I like trader joes/unseen sunscreen. Also have experienced the extremely ridiculous sunscreen prices at beach resorts!!
