Pope Francis’s funeral is set for April 26, and the papal conclave will be held in May

Yesterday, I read too much papal gossip about the departed Pope Francis. Some suggested that Francis was chosen to be a “bridge” pope and no one expected his papacy to last more than a few years. There was gossip that Francis, the first Jesuit pope, would just be filler in between hardliners/ultra-conservative popes. The cardinals probably didn’t think that Francis would have a twelve-year papacy or that he would remake the image of a modern pope. It’s interesting to note that Francis appointed a majority of the college of cardinals who will vote for the new pope in the conclave. Because of last year’s Oscar-nominated film Conclave, a new generation of pope-watchers are now obsessed with conclaves too. Well, the Vatican has made some announcements for Francis’s funeral and the upcoming conclave. Here’s the info about Francis’s funeral, which will be pretty unique:

The date that Pope Francis will be laid to rest has been revealed. According to Vatican News, the Holy See Press Office announced on Tuesday, April 22 — the day after the pontiff’s death at 88 — that the pope’s funeral will take place on Saturday, April 26, at 10:00 a.m. local time in St. Peter’s Square in front of St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.

The service will be led by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals. It will conclude with the Ultima commendatio and the Valedictio. According to BBC News, the Ultima commendatio will be delivered by Re and is the final commendation — a concluding prayer where the pope will be formally entrusted to God.

After the funeral, Pope Francis’ body will be taken into St. Peter’s Basilica before being transferred to the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome for the burial. In 2023, Francis told a Mexican broadcaster that he wanted to be interred in St. Mary Major instead of the Vatican, per the Associated Press. The pontiff also said that he had already decided he wanted to be buried near an icon of the Virgin Mary that is on display at the basilica.

“It’s my great devotion,” Francis said at the time, according to the outlet. “The place is already prepared.”

Francis will be the first pope in more than a century not to be buried in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, per BBC News. In his final testament, Francis specified that he wanted to be buried “in the ground, without particular decoration” and with the inscription of his papal name in Latin — “Franciscus” — according to Reuters. In another break from tradition, his burial will also not require the traditional three coffins consisting of cypress, lead and oak.

The pope’s body is currently lying in an open casket in the chapel of the Casa Santa Marta, his residence at the Vatican. Last year, Francis approved new funeral rites stating his body should be on view in a simple coffin rather than being placed on an elevated bier, per the Associated Press. In a news release, the Holy See Press Office announced that Pope Francis will be taken from Casa Santa Marta to St Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday, April 23, at 09:00 a.m. local time. Cardinal Kevin Farrell will preside over the “rite of translation,” which will begin with a moment of prayer, according to Vatican News. The pope’s body will lie in state at St. Peter’s Basilica until the burial, for the public to pay their respects.

Francis was really about that Jesuit life. He really never wanted the trappings of power or the finery of the papacy. He would have been happy enough to minister to his flock in a simple, plain cotton vestment with a pizza nearby. That being said, I imagine there will be a huge turnout for his funeral on Saturday. I would imagine every European royal house will send someone (likely the king or queen) and many EU leaders will also attend. It’s been 20 years since a sitting pope passed away – a lot of people forget how big it was when John Paul passed in 2005.

As for the conclave, it’s always scheduled for 15 to 20 days after the pope’s funeral. In this case, the conclave will start anywhere between May 6 to the 12th. If you’ve seen the movie, the cardinals stay in seclusion until someone gets a majority vote and there are already some interesting “candidates.” I hope Ralph Fiennes is prepared!

  1. Yes this will be a long drawn out process. Happy he is sticking to his Jesuit roots with less is more. He always wore simple white as the Pope and never wanted anything to be fancy when the poor are suffering. Of course he could have emptied the Vatican coffers to help the poor but I guess he was limited in what he the Pope could do?

Pope Francis was a far better shepherd to his flock than most of the popes in recent times. His hands were tied by the Vatican bankers and curators. Had he been able to sell just one piece of art or one manuscript from the Vatican Museum or Library, he could have provided so much aid where it was needed.

Any Jesuits in the Cardinals list for the conclave?

  3. Tn Democrat says:

I know he wasn’t perfect, but I hope the next pope continues with Pope Francis’s kindness towards the poor/struggling and willingness to speak out against tyranny. Please don’t pick a pope with the moral compass and greed of the evangelical magat garbage willingly and gleefully destroying the world.

  4. Kitten says:

Not a huge fan of religious leaders or their influence but I respected Pope Francis so much as a genuine force for good. He will be greatly missed and I doubt that his replacement will as empathetic and humble.

Very sad that JD Vance did this to him.

  5. Lady Digby says:

Our PM has just announced he will attend but no confirmation of which member of the RF will be there. I hope whoever attends from RF wears black and not hot pink. Trump and wife will be also in attendance.

  6. Lady Digby says:

Apparently FK is attending the funeral on his own. The Daily Express added
The late Queen never attended the funeral of a pontiff, the head of the Roman Catholic Church as monarchs rarely attend funerals.
Anybody know why UK monarchs don’t attend funerals? Was it a tradition or QE2 just didn’t like them? I know the Queen Mother hated funerals.

  7. Digital Unicorn says:

Just been confirmed Peggy and his sad beard is going to the funeral on behalf of the Kind – Trumps going to be there so am sure they will make sure to get their photoshots in.

Prince William to join world leaders including Trump and Macron at Pope’s funeral!!
This is the BBC website excited title, subtext, Will is such a big boy he’s allowed to travel on his own and sit with the grownups who are Global leaders. Maybe one will be an Aston Villa fan so his Saturday won’t be entirely wasted and his wife is safely benched again with her mama.

    • Alteya says:

We’ll see if he recognizes his place and rank (one of the lowest ranked heirs not a monarch). And if he recognizes King Felipe this time.

    Ralph Fiennes for Pope

BBC Royal Correspondent comments how FK’s attendance at such a high profile funeral proves he is definitely taken seriously! I hope FK shows up and also shows up sober and sombre.

It’s true. The film was so well-done that now I’m genuinely like ooh, it’s a conclave. My top three are one of the Italian candidates, the Filipino candidate and then maybe the one from Ghana? I’m basing this off of a chart that’s been circulating on SM which ranks how liberal each on is. So if I’m wrong on that, apologies.

  11. Lau says:

If only they could elect a new pope on 6th May so that Charles can have a public fit about the Catholic Church stealing the date of his coronation.
(Also my birthday is on 6th May so as an Atheist it would be the funniest thing for me to have a new pope elected on that day)

    • Thena says:

Remember how Charles and Camilla had to push their wedding back one day because all the guests were also going to John Paul’s funeral?

      • Alteya says:

Charles attended that funeral, it wasn’t because the 500+ guests at their blessing service were at the papal funeral.

When JPII died everyone said there would never be a pope as great as him. Along comes Francis: Hold my beer!

I went to a Jesuit university in Detroit. We used to call them Jebbies, short for Brothers in Jesus. By the time I arrived most of my professors were lay people, but the Jesuits I did know really were a special breed.
