Prince Harry sent a lovely message to German veterans on their first Veterans Day

In 2023, the Invictus Games were held in Dusseldorf, Germany. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex got a fantastic reception in Germany, but so did the games overall. The Invictus community, veterans from around the world, were spotlighted and embraced by the German government and German people. After the Dusseldorf games, The New European pointed out that hosting the games had radically altered Germany’s relationship with their own veterans. The German government also made some big moves for their veteran community around the games – they are now using the Invictus model to organize a national Warrior Games, and they’re also prioritizing veteran-services and veteran care in new ways. Another change: Germany now has their own Veterans Day holiday. Prince Harry sent a message of support for German veterans celebrating their first national Veterans Day (since WWII at least).

Prince Harry is showing his support for veterans in Germany — by speaking German! The Duke of Sussex addressed former members of the armed forces in a special video played at a poignant commemoration in Berlin on June 15. Opening with “Guten Tag Deutschland!” (which translates to “good day, Germany”) Harry, 40, called it “a profound privilege to be asked by your defense minister to deliver a message to you on this sacred Veteran’s Day.”

Harry referred to his pride at visiting in 2023 when his Invictus Games contest for wounded, sick, and injured serving and ex-personnel took place in Düsseldorf, Germany. “The warmth, the enthusiasm, and the unwavering support shown by the German people for our global community of wounded service personnel was truly humbling,” he said. “You certainly delivered on your promise to create a home for respect.”

“That spirit of camaraderie, forged on the sports field, mirrors the unbreakable bond that connects veterans of all nations. We understand each other, regardless of flag or uniform, bound by shared experiences and an enduring commitment to service,” the father of two added. Harry — who was an officer in the British army for about a decade and served two tours of Afghanistan in that time — was speaking on Germany’s first ever Veteran’s Day.

“Veterans are more than warriors; they are leaders. Living testaments to resilience and moral courage, they understand that loyalty must never lie with power alone, but with the people. With truth,” he added. “As someone who has worn the uniform and stood shoulder to shoulder with brothers and sisters-in-arms from across the world—including many of you—I know that the weight of service is not carried lightly.”

After praising Germany for showing how “memory, accountability, and unity can be turned into strength,” he said this first Veteran’s Day was a “celebration of you, the values you stand for, the oath you took, and the great country you stand to protect.”

His speech is lovely, and I’m really moved that the German Defense Minister asked Harry to give a speech, recognizing veterans’ service. I’m attaching the video below – Harry wore his British medals for the speech, and I’m sure people will attack him for that for some reason.

Aw, it’s very cool that Germany is creating national games for veterans.

  2. Joanne says:

Prince Harry is so good at connecting with Veterans. He knows the experience and the language to use. He reaches them.

What an honor, to be asked by the German defense ministry to speak. Henry did a great job with his warm and personal speech. Glad he got his medals out of Britain when he left. (And suck it, “Global Statesman” Willy.)

Hey Willy, your brother is more of a Global Statesman on just a random Tuesday afternoon than you are ALL YEAR LONG.

  4. Blogger says:

Harry is such a global statesman – asked by the German Defence Minister. 🫡

That is genuine respect. It was so palpable watching the IG Düsseldorf coverage how much the participants loved being part of it.

Diana would be so proud of how her Spencer child has grown up to be – articulate, authentic and he would have been a great ambassador for his country had he been treated with respect.

Keep on being you Harry, you are doing so well 👏

This is very nice, and what real impact looks like. Long-term continued collaboration and development for the benefit of the targeted group. This is what philanthropy and public service should have as its goal across the board. And if it’s not what you are able to achieve, you should go back to the drawing board.

I’m so happy for him that he gets to make the impact that he wants for issues that really matter to him. Also that he is able to have the credit given to him, and not divvied out to other people as if they had any influence or impact on what he has done.

PrincecHarry’s speeches are what I call.. Connection speeches.

So true. I think Harry’s words hit exactly the right note to be profoundly inspiring in this moment of world chaos thanks to T, P, and N and various other countries who are bad actors. Harry is becoming a diplomatic without borders.

I’ll say again, H&M portray the classic royal lifestyle in today’s mediums far, far better than those supposedly “working” for the crown.
Harry, in his bemedalled suit and tropical background, immediately recalls images of the old Duke of Windsor exiled to the Bermudas. But the comparison stops there, as Harry is far more accomplished, engaged and globally popular than the former Edward VII or the future William V.

  7. Amy Bee says:

This is something the Royal Family and the British press can never take away from him and that the German Minister of Defence asked Harry to give a message show how much people outside of the UK hold him in high regard.

  8. Nanea says:

We spent the final four days in Düsseldorf for the IGs.

I was overwhelmed by the niceness, friendliness of the competitors while dealing with other teams, by the camaraderie among the groups of families and friends from the different countries, the overall cheerful atmosphere, people being helpful.

We’ve never been to such a big event that was so positively laid-back. It was a joy to be there.

While our family has no veterans, I know some former Army/Navy/Airforce docs, trauma surgeons mostly, and they *all* said it was Harry’s initiative and influence that made a change of attitude towards veterans here in Germany possible, eventually resulting in the powers that be getting together with the IG Foundation, talking, and ultimatively deciding to create this Veteran’s Day.

Bravo, Harry. He can really be proud of his work and legacy.

How great to get a first-hand account like this! It seems so wonderful from afar; it’s fantastic that the games are having such a lasting, positive impact on veterans and their families.

    • Lady Esther says:

Thank you for sharing this! What an incredible impact Inviticus has, and keeps making across the world. It’s so moving, to see so much gratitude to veterans, who have given their ultimate sacrifice, from a country’s people. Everyone from top to bottom embraces Inviticus as it keeps getting bigger and bigger…just wow ❤️ Harry, this is your legacy! What a true leader he is

  9. Kittenmom says:

Willy take notes – this is how a real global statesman does it.

  10. QuiteContrary says:

How incandescent Willy must be, knowing the respect Harry has earned in the international veterans community.

    Emphasis on “earned.”

  11. Blubb says:

And we gave them the security they needed in 2023. I would say our defence minister has a tough job. Making the Bundeswehr into a fighting force Europe can relay on. We do not only need weapons, but 80000 more soldiers.
And if you want your young people fight for you, you should respect the ones who did.

  12. Gabby says:

I’ll be petty here and say I’m thrilled this happened just after Trooping AND that Harry did not wear his “father’s” coronation medal. I still think he dumped that in a Heathrow trash can on the way home.
