Earlier this year, Cameron Diaz came out of a 10-year hiatus to co-star with Jamie Foxx and Glenn Close in the Netflix film Back in Action. Cameron’s last film was 2014’s Annie which co-starred Foxx and Quvenzhané Wallis. According to Cameron, Foxx convinced her to come out of retirement for the role. During her Hollywood break, she married Benji Madden and welcomed two kids, daughter Raddix, five, and son Cardinal, one.
At the time, Cameron expressed her gratitude for the opportunity, but was non-committal about whether she had officially returned to the acting game. In February, we learned that Cameron would be returning to voice Princess Fiona in Shrek 5. (Zendaya is playing Shrek and Fiona’s daughter!) Now, we have another update. Cameron is set to star in another Netflix film called Bad Day. It’s an action-comedy based on the 1993 Michael Douglas drama, Falling Down.
Cameron Diaz is continuing to stretch her acting muscles. The actress is staying in the Netflix game with a starring role in the upcoming Jake Szymanski-directed action-comedy Bad Day, PEOPLE confirms. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the movie will begin shooting this fall in New York and New Jersey.
Diaz, 52, will star as as “a single mom fighting to keep one little promise to her daughter on the absolute worst day of her life,” per a release, with Laura Solon and Mark Moran executive producing and Beau Bauman producing for Good One Productions.
Bad Day will feature a script by Solon (Let It Snow, Office Christmas Party). And while it’s pitched as a comedy, the film will be based partly on the 1993 drama Falling Down, starring Michael Douglas and directed by the late Joel Schumacher, THR reports.
Back in January, Diaz reflected on her gratitude in coming back to the industry, saying on The Graham Norton Show “that the door was even open for me after a decade was amazing” and crediting Foxx, 57, for her return to movies.
“It is a privilege to make films, and we are all so lucky to do what we do,” the Charlie’s Angels star continued, adding that while she “loved those 10 years for me and my family,” she also thought, ” ‘If I let this go away, if I don’t engage again and if I don’t give it chance, I am a fool.’ ”
“It might be the beginning of something, but it’s here now, and I am grateful for it,” Diaz said.
During a interview with Empire the previous month, the actress revealed it was “hard to say” if she’d return for another movie after Back in Action.
“I don’t know how I view it. It’s hard to say,” Diaz said when asked if that film marked a permanent return. “If I say it then it becomes this thing. I reserve the right to say no to doing a movie ever again, and I reserve the right to say yes if I decide to.”
She also joked, “No more romcoms, only momcoms.”
I couldn’t remember what Falling Down was about, so I read through the plot on Wikipedia. The ending is pretty dark! I don’t see Cameron being into a dark comedy role right now, so I think it’s safe to say that Bad Day is just based on its premise. I keep picturing Jingle All the Way type hijinks for some reason. Cameron is a good comedic actress, so I’ll definitely keep Bad Day on my radar.
Also, LMAO at her “no more romcoms, only momcoms” joke. Does she mean raunchier movies like Bad Moms or family comedies, like Freaky Friday? I have long been a proponent to bring back an updated, 2025 version of the romcom. I’m thinking she means the latter. In that case, I bet someone could find a good vehicle for Cameron. Here’s to hoping that we’ll get even more Cameron Diaz movies in the future.

I think about Falling Down when I am in the McD’s drive-through and the clock is inching toward the cut-off for my egg mcmuffin and the line isn’t moving.
It doesn’t happen a lot, but when it does, whoo boy!
Yeesh she is making terrible project choices! Maybe she should stay retired a bit longer.
Yeah it’s sure sounds like it. I guess she really needs the money which is fine
I’m sad Diaz came out of retirement for all this crap.😞
Not only comedic chops, but her turn in Being John Malkovich, is always a reminder of her singular talent.
Should stayed retired Cami!!
At one time early last year Cameron was said to be filming “Outcome” with Keanu and Matt Bomer.
While I saw photos of KR and MB on set sometime in 2024, I never caught any with Cameron. And I think it’s a bit strange that whatever it is that they filmed for Apple+ still hasn’t even a release date listed.
I LOVE this idea for her! I remember seeing the original with MD when I was a teenager in the 90’s and loved it then too.
With a woman at the helm I think it’s gonna be really interesting.
