Cameron Diaz is coming out of retirement to star in a movie with Jamie Foxx

Cameron Diaz is keeping me on my toes. When I wrote about her earlier this month, I wrote: “Cameron Diaz is effectively retired from acting these days. She never officially said that, but she did say she was going to be more selective going forward and she definitely has been.” Aside from a video short (in 2020 so she was probably just bored), Cameron hasn’t been in a movie for eight years, since Annie in 2014. But now she’s coming out of retirement to star in a Netflix movie with her Annie costar, Jamie Foxx. They both posted the news on their social media and did a (planned?) bit with Tom Brady, who obviously has experience with coming out of retirement.

After an eight-year hiatus, Cameron Diaz is making movies again.

Diaz, who officially confirmed her retirement from Hollywood in 2018, is set to star in the new Netflix film “Back in Action,” alongside Jamie Foxx. The two previously starred together in 2014’s “Annie,” Diaz’s last feature film appearance.

“(Jamie Foxx) only you could get me back in action,” the actress wrote in an Instagram story following the announcement. “I can’t frickin wait it’s gonna be a blast!”

Netflix has not yet set a release date for the film, but Foxx wrote on Twitter that production is set to begin this year.

Foxx celebrated Diaz’s return on Twitter, posting a recording of the two chatting about her comeback.

“I feel excited but, I don’t know how to do this, you know?” Diaz said in the clip.

Foxx then brought Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady to the call. Brady – who won six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots – retired earlier this year, but came out of retirement just weeks later.

“I was talking to Jamie and he said you need a few tips on how to un-retire. I’m relatively successful at un-retiring,” Brady joked.

Though not as active in Hollywood in recent years, Diaz remained busy by launching an organic wine label.

Last year, Diaz stated that, as a mother, she couldn’t imagine being on a movie set for 16 hours a day anymore.

“Will I ever make a movie again? I’m not looking to, but will I? I don’t know. I have no idea. Maybe. Never say never,” she said at the time.

Diaz married Good Charlotte singer Benji Madden in 2015, and the two have one child together, Raddix, born in 2020.

I mean, Cameron is better at retiring than Tom because she actually did it for eight years and not just one month. But should we call it a hiatus now? I think it’s cute that Cameron’s last movie before and first movie after her hiatus are with Jamie Foxx. They must have a great time working together and/or the script is really special.  Appropriately, the movie is called Back in Action and there are few details available aside from the facts that it’s an action-comedy by the guys who did Horrible Bosses and Neighbors. This sounds like it will be a perfect movie for Cameron’s return, since she’s so good in those type of roles. I wonder if she and Jamie will be on the same side or working against each other. I hope they’re on the same side because I think that might be more fun. I glanced at Cameron’s IMDB to see what else she did in 2014, and I can really see why she retired. I forgot how prolific she was over the 20 years she was acting. Now I want to watch some of her movies this weekend. Since Cameron has a toddler, she has said that the long hours on movie sets contributed to her retreat from acting. Netflix must have some good options in place for her to go back.

Cameron has done some great movies. I’m excited to see her back in action. I think she’s underrated given that she’s mostly a comedic actor.

I think Cameron probably wants her last movie to be a hit and/or critically acclaimed. I also think she may decide work occasionally as projects she’s interested in come up and someday she could be in a Grace & Frankie-type situation. (LOL imagine a reboot of that with Cameron and Drew Barrymore!)

  2. BeanieBean says:

Did she retire or did Hollywood retire her? Inconceivable as it may be (or not), the industry still seems to operate on looking for the next hot young thing (female variety, of course) & Cameron simply aged out. Which is ridiculous. And as Josephine states, Cameron’s great in comedic roles & that tends to be undervalued.

  3. Dlc says:

I am very excited about this!

  4. Carol says:

Again everything Cameron said before, she does the opposite; won’t get married, doesn’t want children, no longer wants to work etc And guess what? She has done all of them. They are so full of crap.

    • Mle428 says:

      Dang, Carol. Who hurt you?

    • Southern Fried says:

I get it, you can’t believe what they say, just empty words. It gets old.

    • Eleonor says:

Because in your life you did exactly everything you said you wanted to do I presume.
Cameron has been away from the screen for 8 years, which is a long time. About marriage and family people change, I don’t see the big deal.

    • Snoozer says:

Orrrrrr… she once felt this way and then changed her mind? I mean, humans change their minds! I know people who NEVER wanted kids and ended up having them. I know people who retired, got bored, and unretired. I know people who never wanted to get married and were superficial about it and then met someone who changed their mind. Humans grow and change, it’s allowed! We’re not stuck with the choices we made when young forever.

    • Fabiola says:

A lot of people change their minds in regards to wanting marriage and kids. Also, a lot of people come out of retirement. People are allowed to change their minds.

I can’t remember where I read it but there were whispers about Cameron choosing to retire because of some type of harassment she endured on set around the time of the Me Too movement but it didn’t get much traction and was very vague. She was SO good in comedic snarky roles so I was always curious about why she abruptly retired but it could’ve been simply about her just wanting to enjoy life and family.

    • DuchessL says:

I thought she wanted to have her life back, not have people run her life for her or something like that. I Think she just got bored, had plenty of money, didnt have to work, was in love and everything was too much stress when she was trying to conceive? I think she just did what she felt like which is great. Go with your vibe.

    • Truthiness says:

I heard the same thing, that there was something bad that happened. Bad enough for her to say screw this, I’m out.
