Emma Thompson: Donald Trump asked me out on the day I got my divorce decree

Here are some photos of Emma Thompson at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland over the weekend. She was there to pick up the Leopard Club Award at the festival, and she also did a Q&A session which served as a career retrospective. Emma spoke about her filmography, and she also told one of her favorite stories: how Donald Trump asked her out in the 1990s. This must be one of Emma’s “party stories” – a funny/horrible story you tell at parties to amuse your hosts. She’s told variations of the story before, but she added some new details to the narrative, like Trump called her on the very day her divorce decree came through (she divorced Kenneth Branagh).

Speaking at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, Dame Emma said she was in her trailer while filming Primary Colors, the 1998 film loosely based on Bill Clinton’s journey to the White House, when the phone rang.

“It was Donald Trump,” she said. “He said: ‘Hello, this is Donald Trump.’ I thought it was a joke and asked: ‘How can I help you?’ Maybe he needed directions from someone. Then he said: ‘I’d love you to come and stay at one of my beautiful places. Maybe we could have dinner.’ I said: ‘Well, that’s very sweet. Thank you so much. I’ll get back to you.’”

Around that time, Mr Trump had just separated from his second wife, Marla Maples. Dame Emma had announced her separation from actor Kenneth Brannagh in 1995 and begun a relationship with her co-star Greg Wise, whom she later married. During the Q&A about her career at the film festival, she said she had pondered why Mr Trump contacted her at that time.

“I realised that on that day, my divorce decree had come through,” Dame Emma said. “And I bet he’s got people looking for suitable people he could take out on his arm. You know, a nice divorcee, that’s what he was looking for.”

She joked: “And he found the number in my trailer. I mean, that’s stalking.”

The actress, who has been a “life-long” member of Labour and supported Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership, told the festival that, had she had a romantic relationship with Trump, she might changed the course of history.

“I could have gone on a date with Donald Trump, and then I would have a story to tell. I could have changed the course of American history,” she said.

[From The Telegraph]

Back in 2017, when I covered Emma talking about this previously, I expressed surprise that Trump would even ask out someone like Emma – intelligent, sharp-witted and attractive, but not a beauty-pageant contestant, and not someone with that glossy, fake look he seems to like. I’m still sort of surprised, but I also think he was just constantly hitting on famous women back then. Before the dementia really set in, he was fascinated by Hollywood and stardom. Most A-listers thought he was a tacky idiot. Emma certainly thought that.

Oh, no. Now the WH will have to issue a statement about what a loser she is.

  2. Miranda says:

Circling like a vulture and counting down the days to a woman’s divorce being finalized is hardly surprising behavior from him. This is the same sentient piece of shit who, within days of Diana’s death, was bragging (needless to say, quite implausibly) to Howard Stern that he totally could’ve banged her. I think it may have even been before her funeral.

Uggggh, nothing like getting kicked when you’re already down. Poor Emma. Getting asked out by a tacky, arrogant faux millionaire on the day of your divorce decree would send me into a ditch.
How long until he responds to this?

  4. Aimee says:

It will be the typical “She’s not my type.”

  5. LongThymeLurker says:

He was delusional then if he thought he could get a date with Dame Emma!

  6. Jay says:

Ick, I would be insulted! Dollars to doughnuts, Trump just saw her as a famous blonde who was recently divorced and might bring him some publicity if he could get himself seen with her. He’s certainly deluded enough to think that he had a chance if she was feeling vulnerable after a very messy and humiliating divorce. I’m sure he had no idea she could make conversation at all, let alone a sharp wit – he probably planned to do all of the talking had they ever met.

Emma definitely came out of this for the better, though. Not only did she get rid of a pretentious dead weight (IMO) she adapted and starred in an Oscar-winning screenplay and that’s where she met Greg Wise, her husband to this day.

Sense and Sensibility was last Sunday’s throwback film at my local cinema and I’d forgotten quite how amazing it is. It’s a who’s who of British actors and they are all giving 100%. It was wonderful laughing and crying along with a whole room full of other people.

Although on the way home my friend and I did agree that Robin Hood Prince of Thieves Alan Rickman may be the hottest Alan Rickman.

SarahCS, beg to differ. Alan Rickman as Valmont in Broadway’s Les Liaisons Dangereuses was the hottest Alan Rickman. 😉😉 Terrific production.

      • here2 says:

Robin Hood Alan Rickman, like any Alan Rickman, is hot, but Colonel Brandon can GET. IT. “Give me an occupation or I shall go mad.” Me too, Colonel, me too.

Ahem. I love, love, love that movie and every role is perfect. I only realized last year (when my sister and I rewatched when she was home for Christmas) that Emma is married to Willoughby (AKA Greg Wise) and I think they are both lucky people!!

@SarahCS… No. Rickman’s villainous, bearded Hans Gruber in Die Hard was thee hottest Alan Rickman. When he busrt on the scene out of the back of that box truck… I almost fainted. I still swoon over that performance. That sexy Alan Rickman is a hill I would die on! I just loved that movie bad boy. However, he was no slouch as the kindly romantic in Sense and Sensibility either. 😍
