For almost a decade, there have been rumors of a sequel to the 1997 cult classic Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion. Late last year, Mira Sorvino (Romy) confirmed that a second movie was officially in the works, but it hadn’t been greenlit yet. The sequel got the go-ahead in January, and this past May, Alan Cumming teased that he’d be returning as Sandy Frink. We know so far that Mira, Lisa Kudrow, (Michele) and Alan are back. The original writer came back to pen the sequel. In an interview with Us Weekly, Mira gave us some new information about the sequel. She called it really moving and funny and said they will begin filming in spring 2026.
“The plan is right now to shoot it late spring,” the actress, 57, exclusively told Us Weekly on Friday, September 26, while discussing her upcoming appearance on the game show Name That Tune. “The script is great. Robin Schiff, the original writer, wrote the sequel, and Lisa [Kudrow] and I have had a lot of input in it.”
Sorvino added that not only are she and Kudrow, 62, reprising their roles, but they are also serving as executive producers.
“It’s not like us just visiting and other people being [in] it,” she continued. “Romy and Michele again, and we’re seeing what they’re up to nowadays, and the whole gang is back.”
In the 1997 cult classic, Sorvino starred as Romy, a former popular girl who works as a cashier after high school, while Kudrow played an unpopular classmate named Michele who is also down on her luck post-grad. After high school, the women end up being roommates. As their 10-year reunion approaches, they devise a plan to make their lives appear better than they actually are.
“In the original, they have this hurdle where they re-examine their lives all of a sudden, based on some external benchmark, and that starts happening to them in this too,” Sorvino teased. “But it’s sort of all, what would they be thinking about now at this point in their life.”
While Sorvino can’t share a lot about the sequel’s premise, she teased that the story is “really funny” and “moving”
“I think part of Romy and Michele is that it has, like, a lot of emotion underneath it, and that’s why people have always related to it,” she told Us. “It’s about being yourself and loving your best friends, no matter what other people think of you, and just being your authentic self, even though they’re idiots.”
Sorvino explained that while Romy and Michele had fun elements with its music, fashion and dancing, the “enduring” storyline helped it “become such a cult favorite.” She teased that fans can “of course” expect a big dance number just like the original had..
I don’t know about this one. I love Romy and Michele, but I’m okay with it being a one and done. It was hilarious and highly quotable, but we don’t need a sequel. I don’t know if they’d even be able to recreate what made it so magical. Maybe I’ll write the pros and cons of a sequel down on a post-it note. On one hand, we’ve seen Hollywood try to do it so many times in both TV and film over the last decade and it’s always to mixed results. Arrested Development and Hocus Pocus 2 immediately come to mind, but I know there are plenty of other properties that should have been best left to their original run. On the other hand, we’ve had some sequels that have lived up to the original, like Top Gun: Maverick. That said, I’d totally watch a Romy and Michele sequel, if only for nostalgia purposes.

With this news and The Comeback series, Lisa Kudrow is gonna have a great 2027!!🤩🤩
This made my day! Romy and Michele is still one of my fav movies of all time!
2027 = 40th class reunion!
I’m exhausted of reboots and sequels decades later, but honestly I will watch TF out of this. It won’t be big. A niche group of us will care about it, but it will be so much fun.
Yep, I will happily drag my GenX ass to the theater for this.
Good to see Mira Sorvino thriving after being blacklisted by Harvey Weinstein.
If they’re going to make umpteen Batman movies… but, yeah, this, yet another sequel, is another example of our general societal decay.
I love Mira so much. I remember being a kid and watching Mimic and Replacement Killers on TV. I think she deserves a revival like Brendan Fraser.
Really hoping Janeane Garofalo joins the film. Let her have input into her own storyline and it will be amazing.
