Lizza: Olivia Nuzzi outed confidential sources, ran catch & kill ops for RFK Jr.

Ryan Lizza dropped Part III of his Substack series on the night before Thanksgiving. Not typically a moment to drop a big piece of news, although navel-gazing journalists spent much of the long holiday weekend analyzing Part III and what it all means for the state of American journalism. While Lizza is being widely mocked for his big cliffhanger, I actually think Part III is an extremely damning look at how Olivia Nuzzi was applauded and rewarded for her unethical behavior, sh-tty journalism and lack of integrity. If you want to pay for the Substack, go here to read it. Some highlights from Part III: Catch and Kill.

*Olivia Nuzzi was obsessed with getting an advanced copy of the New Yorker’s profile of Robert Kennedy Jr, due to be published in August 2024. Lizza first thinks that Nuzzi wants an advanced copy because she’s jealous that journalist Clare Malone scooped her with Kennedy’s dead-bear-cub story. But Nuzzi wanted a copy because for months, she had been running a catch-and-kill operation on behalf of Kennedy and his campaign. Lizza writes that Nuzzi “behind the scenes and without much explanation, she insisted [Kennedy] would be the next president. What I didn’t know at the time was that she was secretly working to help make Bobby the next president.”

*Nuzzi already had the dead-bear-cub scoop from a confidential source. Instead of reporting the story or handing it to someone else at New York Magazine, she “outed the source to Bobby and told him everything she had learned….Together, they plotted to kill it, or at the very least, get ahead of it.”

*Nuzzi eventually confessed to Lizza that she did this often throughout 2024: “canvassing sources who trusted her, obtaining their opposition research on Bobby, and then feeding it directly to the candidate….Olivia also obtained information to help Bobby acquire Secret Service protection, advised him on debate prep, including what suit to wear for a key appearance, and provided him with detailed media strategy advice, among other things.”

*Per Lizza: “During much of this period, Olivia was reporting and writing a major article about Joe Biden, considered the single most devastating piece about the president in all of 2024.”

*Nuzzi helped Kennedy negotiate his endorsement of Trump: “Later, she would use a major assignment to gather intelligence that would help Bobby negotiate the terms of his Trump endorsement, a caper that included a clandestine operation at Mar-a-Lago never revealed. Olivia had essentially become a private political operative for Bobby Kennedy, while publicly posing as a hard-nosed reporter. In other words, what you have been reading about here is not really a scandal about sex, but a scandal about journalistic ethics.”

*Nuzzi turned to Jessica Reed Kraus, “a Substack writer and Kennedy propagandist who is close to Bobby” to help her decode Kennedy. Per Lizza: “At first, Olivia saw her as a rival and was jealous of Jessica’s proximity to Bobby, so she tried to damage Jessica’s credibility with anonymous Reddit posts. Later, Olivia switched tactics and befriended Jessica, gaining a steady stream of intel about Bobby that helped her understand how many other women he might be having affairs with, whether there was any truth to the rumors that he had something to do with his ex-wife’s death, the real story behind whispers inside the campaign that Bobby, a former heroin addict, was using drugs again, and whether there was any chance Bobby would ever leave his wife, Cheryl Hines.”

*Nuzzi wormed her way into Kennedy’s campaign and became his eyes and ears: “One day, a young campaign aide approached Olivia with an inside account of the chaotic process that led Bobby to select Nicole Shanahan as his running mate. Like the bear story, it was journalistic gold for anyone covering the Kennedy campaign. But instead of pursuing the story, Olivia convinced the staffer to remain loyal to Bobby—and then informed the candidate of everything. She had successfully caught and killed an embarrassing tell-all from a campaign whistleblower whose identity she revealed to the candidate.”

*Nuzzi’s piece on Joe Biden, who she saw as Kennedy’s opponent: “A week after Bobby’s event—yes, he wore a blue suit—Olivia published her piece about Biden, savaging him as a drooling invalid. I was shocked when I read the piece because she had included an anecdote about Biden not remembering the name of a ‘Democratic megadonor’ that I knew had been told to her off the record. ‘How did you get that in there?’ I asked. ‘I just sort of Michael Wolffed it,’ she replied, which was jarring to me because previously she was scrupulous about sourcing. Her piece was promoted as an account of ‘the conspiracy of silence to protect’ Biden.”

*Nuzzi schemed to send an artist friend to Mar-a-Lago to sketch Trump: “Olivia had a brilliant plan to help secure Trump’s cooperation with her article. She convinced New York magazine to commission artist Isabelle Brourman to draw a portrait of Trump to accompany the piece. Trump had taken a liking to Izzy when she worked as a sketch artist during his Manhattan trial, and Olivia figured he would enjoy having her around him. She was right. But Olivia was excluded from Izzy’s key session with Trump at Mar-a-Lago, and so Olivia adjusted the plan. She sent Izzy inside Trump’s Palm Beach compound with a recorder in her bag, which rolled as Izzy drew Trump, who was taking campaign meetings with the likes of Matt Gaetz, Susie Wiles, and others. With any luck, Olivia would capture some great material for her piece and some intel for Bobby as he negotiated the endorsement. According to Olivia, when Izzy left the session, Izzy was hung up on something she believed Trump might have said about Butler, Pennsylvania—something explosive that, if she were correct, would shatter our understanding of recent history.”

[From Telos News]

Yeah, Lizza really did a cliffhanger about how the Butler shooting was not what it seemed, all because he wants people to pay for his Substack. That’s amoral. But I meant what I said about this being a fascinating look at Nuzzi’s sleaze and compromised ethics. She fully insinuated herself within Kennedy’s half-assed campaign, working as a de facto senior staffer, leaving all of her journalist’s ethics at the door because she wanted to bang a man who sounds like a crusty carburetor. And by the way, she was banging him. She wasn’t doing all of this because she *hoped* he would bang her. WTF did her editors at New York Mag think last year?

Agh that Hapsburg jaw. I just can’t see past it.

  2. Brassy Rebel says:

My God, these people are awful, including Lizza who is following the grand journalistic tradition of saving important information that the American people should know so that he could monetize it in the future. American journalism is in as bad a state as the political system and had much to do with destroying our country. Btw, after RFK, did Nuzzi move on to Jake Tapper because what she wrote about Joe Biden is suspiciously similar to Tapper’s account of a “grand conspiracy of silence”.

  3. laurie says:

And wtf Vanity Fair hiring her and then highlighting her and her “book” in their latest edition?? I loved VF in the Christopher Hitchens days but any more…..

    • Annette says:

I never thought I’d be brought down to this level, of saying something like this about another woman, but she’s obviously banging Mark Guiducci, who heads up Vanity Fair.

      • D says:

Pretty sure he’s gay, but I think he wanted someone with a big name and notorious to bring attention to his iteration of the magazine. Big mistake.

    • Betsy says:

I would support just about any new magazine that would take VF’s place since it, too, sucks butt now. We need media to replace the obviously captured outlets.

Though I think with an organized boycott of Wapo/Amazon/WF we could force Bezos to sell Wapo at least as a starter… Which is only tangentially related to Olivia Nuzzi but it’s all a big tangle.

  4. PunkyMomma says:

All of these so-called journalists are beyond contempt.

  5. Jess says:

Our political journalists are a large part of why we are in this dystopia. This is so shameful all around. And I didn’t know anything about the new Vanity Fair editor until all of this. I hated the Graydon Carter era of VF but I liked the Radhika era. But time to cancel my subscription!0

    • Betsy says:

The media and the “journalists” are literally the lion’s share of why we’re here. They never name things as they are. Democrats – even corporate friendly pretty much 1970s Republicans Democrats! – are dismissed, demonized and ridiculed while Republicans are given a pass, elevated or their positions promoted. At no point is the GOP’s fascism clearly pointed out. Nothing is called out. It’s sickening and it’s why we are where we are.

  6. Amy Bee says:

The more that comes out a out Nuzzi the more embarrassing it is that Vanity Fair chose to hire her.

  7. Lucy says:

This is all wild, and is anyone truly surprised finding out that one of the worst profiles in Biden was written by someone essentially on Trumps side?

He better have receipts for whatever tea about Butler he thinks he has. The Jessica Reed Kraus person referenced is House of Habit (or habitat? Never followed her). She got big online for being super pro Johnny Depp during the trial with his ex wife, it has somehow turned her into a MAGA media player.

I will also say this lady is probably diagnosable, this is some Machiavelli stuff that’s ridiculous. And Lizza has known all this stuff all this time and never leaked it to any of the political people he knew who could have kept him anonymous and exposed how this small time girl was manipulating the narrative about the president and the presidential race, and he didn’t. Because he wants revenge and that’s it.

  8. tamsin says:

The state of journalism and its complicity with this current fascism is part of the current destruction of democracy and constructive discourse required to maintain it.

  9. Jumpingthesnark says:

Hope she loses that fancy VF job. She should be radioactive when it comes to legit journalism jobs.

    • BeanieBean says:

And I hope her book tanks. She needs to get a job at Walmart or something because she is no credible journalist.

  10. FYI says:

    WTH is going on!?!?

Nuzzi is certifiable, okay, but what is Lizza DOING!? Is he seriously suggesting that Nuzzi and / or some goofy artist from NY have a Butler plot ON TAPE?!?! If Nuzzi really does have some plan on tape, then I hope she runs and hides immediately, because her life is in serious danger. (btw, I call Isabelle Brourman a “goofy artist” with good reason. It is cavalier beyond words to walk into a meeting like that with a running tape recorder in your bag. Jesus.)

Do all of these people think this is some kind of a sitcom? A joke? I never believed Trump got shot — no scar, nothing — but did they really kill two people to fake that? Again, WTH is going on!?!?

    • Lucy says:

I’m wondering wtf the book he and lady love were writing was. He was fully on board with all of this until she embarrassed him. I’m assuming it was her writing her obsession love bombs about him, which are probably close to identical to whatever she said to/about Kennedy. He was going to sue her over the book deal disappearing, I don’t remember what happened with that. Just hot garbage.

    • Betsy says:

“I never believed Trump got shot — no scar, nothing — but did they really kill two people to fake that?”

YES. I mean this with all due kindness and no internet snark: it is time to understand that there is no low to which the GOP will not stoop. I have been of the opinion that Butler was staged since the beginning, and I think they were okay with the risk of Trump getting killed. It would have been convenient, in fact, and would have made the rigging of the 2024 election probably a little easier for the GOP than it was.

The GOP has left decency behind. They don’t care how many people get killed, all that matters is that the people who control and fund their party are able to acquire more power, more rights and can kick down even the slightest whiff of progressive rights.

  11. QuiteContrary says:

These people are deplorable. And shouldn’t be allowed to even have newspaper delivery routes, let alone be admitted into newsrooms.

  12. Bumblebee says:

This is some crazy level obsessive behavior over one man. That likely screwed us all. Thanks never, Nuzzi and late to the party Lizza.

  13. bisynaptic says:

Our press has failed us. Nuzzi and Lizza and Izzy are just the tip of the iceberg.

  14. Mee says:

Birds of a feather. He (Lizza) is no hero here. He lacks character and ethics. And sitting on this all this time, only having a problem with it once he caught her cheating, he needs to take lots of heat for that.
Her……YIKES all caps. There is no bottom to her lack of integrity, morals, ethics, journalistic standards, men she’ll spread her legs for standards. Intensive therapy to clean out your childhood trauma….has got to be better than bangin’ geriatric men.
    Girl damn and eww

  15. Amy T says:

Reading Lizza’s – I don’t even know what you call what he’s writing – but it made me think of the Joan Rivers line: “If you have a pretty face and a trick pelvis, you’re home free.” None of what she was doing before and while they were together seemed to bother him, but the very idea that she’d take her trick pelvis and move on seems to have unhinged him. Which is too bad, because based on what they’re churning out, they seem perfect for each other.

  16. Bqm says:

I’ve always thought butler was a false flag. But I don’t think they yapped about it in front of a courtroom artist who wasn’t part of their inner circle. Whatever is coming isn’t going to be earth shattering or proof of anything.

    • Betsy says:

I wouldn’t put it past them. To (probably mis-) quote All The President’s Men: these aren’t smart men and it all got away from them.

So far they haven’t seen any consequences, but one day there will be an after. And I want consequences. I want Reconstruction the way it should have been done in 1865 and moving forward. I want trials, I want JUSTICE.

  17. Sue says:

“..would shatter our understanding of recent history.”
Everything in the past 12 months has shattered my understanding of the human condition.
Hell is truly empty and the devils are all here.
