King Charles recorded a personal video message for Stand Up to Cancer 2025

Here are some photos of King Charles from this week. He went solo to an Advent Service at Westminster Abbey on December 10th. He looked quite pale and tired. He’s aged a decade in the past two years. I keep thinking about Robert Jobson’s latest book, in which high-placed sources claimed that Charles was in a lot of pain even before his cancer diagnosis nearly two years ago. February will be the two-year anniversary of Charles’s diagnosis. The British papers have stopped mentioning Charles’s weekly treatments, but he’s still getting them and he still builds his schedule around being in London mid-week for those (undisclosed) treatments. Well, later today, Charles is going to speak publicly, via a television address, about his cancer. The headlines make it sound like Charles is going to deliver a dramatic announcement about his health – this does not seem to be the case. It sounds as if it’s more like a general statement about early cancer screenings and general support for people with cancer and cancer survivors.

The King is to deliver a personal message to the nation about his cancer. He has recorded a television broadcast from the Morning Room at Clarence House about his “recovery journey”, alongside a plea for early cancer screening. The video message, filmed at the end of November, will be aired on Channel 4 at 8pm on Friday as part of Stand Up To Cancer 2025, a joint campaign with Cancer Research UK.

The King was expected to stress the importance of cancer screening programmes in enabling early diagnosis and reflect on his own recovery journey, Buckingham Palace said.

The King was diagnosed with cancer in February 2024 after he underwent checks on a prostate issue. At the time, he was widely praised for his openness, which helped to raise awareness of the symptoms of his initial diagnosis of an enlarged prostate and then cancer. He has undergone weekly cancer treatment since then and been in hospital with the side effects.

The King has never disclosed the type of cancer he has, other than to specify that it is not prostate, in the hopes of raising awareness and communicating with the widest possible public audience as well as discouraging people from researching the prognosis.

The King’s message will form part of an evening of programming at the end of a week-long Stand Up to Cancer campaign. The night is intended to raise funds for cancer research and support all those affected by the illness. It will be followed by a live broadcast from a cancer clinic at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, presented by Davina McCall.

This year, Stand Up To Cancer has launched a simple online screening checker to help members of the public research the breast, bowel and cervical screening programmes they may be eligible for. The King is patron of Macmillan Cancer Support and Cancer Research UK.

Again, it sounds like a regular message of support, not a big update about the state of his health. I jumped when I saw the headlines too, because as head of state, Charles has probably been encouraged to make a televised public address about the state of his health. You know what I’m saying? If he had something major to announce, he would do it via a prerecorded, televised statement. But that’s not what this is. This is something in association with Stand Up to Cancer. Speaking of, it’s odd that the Princess of Wales isn’t doing anything with Stand Up to Cancer or really any cancer charity or cancer network.

“Odd that the Princess of Wales isn’t doing anything.”

    Not really.

It would be amazing if the King finally realized that he’s been a shitty father to Harry and wants to make amends with him and his daughter-in-law before the inevitable happens. I hope he’s on that road now. It would make him a better human and it would make him feel better overall.

  3. Sunniside up says:

It can’t be good for his health to be at odds with both his children.

When I first saw this, I thought it was going to be some sort of ” this is my prognosis” sort of address, but I suppose that’s not really the Windsors style. Doing something this time of year around charity given the public knowledge of his cancer makes sense.

As for the Princess of Wales, it’s difficult to tell if that’s just her general laziness, their intense need for privacy and any sort of real insight, or being afraid of calling too much attention to a story that increasingly has holes.

  5. Well good for him doing this for Stand Up To Cancer! As for Can’t well I have my beliefs why she does very little if anything for Cancer charities and such!

  6. Ginger says:

I just don’t understand why Charles and Kate won’t say what kind of cancer they have and what signs and symptoms they had so they can help others. It’s very odd. If Kate didn’t want to say anything while she was going through treatments then why not now since she is in remission?

    • Lucky Charm says:

It’s difficult to say anything when you never had cancer to begin with.

    • JT says:

For Charles, I think revealing the type of cancer that he has would put people on death watch. For Kate, I think she doesn’t want too many details about what happened or things will start to get dicey. In her words, “cancer cells had been present” and that’s all that I’ll believe.

      • AMB says:

@JT – “cancer cells had been present” – five little words in whose wake speculation and conclusion-jumping have been allowed to run rampant, without clarification, demurral or correction.

      • JT says:

@Amb for me, “cancer cells had been present” is significant. I have family members who’ve been diagnosed with cancer and none of them have said cancer had been present. They’ve all said “I have cancer” of “I was diagnosed with cancer.” Coupled with Kate saying she had “preventative chemo” and William stating that Kate had “pre cancerous cells” to Rhiannon Mills just gives me the feeling that her cancer battle has been greatly embellished. I’ll eat my hat if I’m wrong but that’s where I’m at. I believe she’s had health issues that needed surgery and cancer cells were found but anything else doesn’t pass the smell test for me.

    • Becks1 says:

So giving them both the benefit of the doubt – I think for Charles its to prevent a death watch, and I think for Kate its because either the cancer involves her reproductive or digestive systems (ovarian, colon – something she wouldn’t want people talking about, remember how she said meghan couldnt discuss her hormones?), or because it would reveal what kind of “abdominal surgery” she had and they want to hide that. Maybe it reveals too much about other health issues, IDK.

And again that’s giving the benefit of the doubt.

  7. Amy Bee says:

Yeah, he’s not making a major announcement just a message of solidarity. I wonder if Kate has filmed a segment too. She hasn’t been seen this entire week.

    • QuiteContrary says:

It would be SO easy to do. But knowing how weird and territorial the royals are, maybe it would be seen as overshadowing the king (which is no way excuses her laziness).

  8. Tessa says:

Keens winter season tribute to nay cha is next. Maybe it will be released soon with her personal message.

  9. Smatone99 says:

Well, Willy may have jumped the ‘Scooter King Will reign has begun’ because Charles is having his treatment reduced. Oh well. Sucks to be scooter.

    • LADY DIGBY says:

Well that is good news for Chuck and his loved ones. Surely Wilbur can “now continue to take it easy!” and stop panic briefing about us peasants putting any pressure on him to work more when his babies need him at Forrest Lodge!

  10. Mtl.ex.pat says:

Ok please don’t take this the wrong way but am I the only one who finds it odd that they always specify “not prostate cancer!” Like is he worried about people thinking his manly parts don’t function as sometimes happens after surgery? It’s just strange. Mr. Expat is now six years post prostate cancer surgery (touchwood still healthy!) and his view is that awareness and testing are crucial – and so many men wait too long because of shame. The “not prostate” comments plays into that shame and it makes me so annoyed.

    • Christine says:

It bothers me as well, especially since prostate cancer in men is widespread, so long as something else doesn’t kill them first. It would do a world of good to actually name it.
