The Windsors don’t do winter images for their holiday cards for a reason

Last week, the Wales family finally revealed their 2025 Christmas card. The image, seen above, reads as a very “spring” setting, likely because it was taken in April by photographer Josh Shinner. Shinner took a lot of photos of the Wales family in April, they must have done a full photoshoot at Anmer Hall, with individual set-ups with each kid, because a lot of the photoshoot pics were used for birthdays and holidays for the rest of the year. This is not the first time that Prince William and Kate’s Christmas card image was not seasonally appropriate – last year’s card was taken in summer, and the 2023 card was a black-and-white portrait inside a studio (what looked like an Olan Mills mall studio from the 1980s). Why can’t the Wales family do a winter or even an autumnal-themed photoshoot for their Christmas card? Well, Dick Fitzwilliams has some thoughts.

It is a beloved tradition that dates back as far as 1923: the royal Christmas card. A much-anticipated moment for royal fans worldwide, the annual season’s greetings are unveiled in the build up to the festivities by key senior royals, including King Charles and Queen Camilla, alongside Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Yet while they are designed to spread festive cheer, there is a small and seemingly bizarre detail to the British Royal Christmas cards that has been noted over the last 102 years. Rather than a scene of snowy mountains and Christmas trees, the image on the front of the joyful cards typically captures the royals against a sunny backdrop without a single winter coat in sight.

However, according to royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams, the Firm’s use of a brighter and less winter-themed card is deliberately symbolic, with a warmer image intended to convey optimism and strength as we enter into the new year.

‘A royal card is invariably a photograph of senders. If they looked kitted for harsh weather, it might be viewed as symbolic, especially if the royal family has had a tough year,’ Mr Fitzwilliams explained. Describing the royal card as ‘an important public relations statement’, he added that the Firm undoubtedly ‘take a lot of care in choosing their cards’ and that the message conveyed ‘must be positive’.

Described by Mr Fitzwilliams as the ‘perfect example of a Christmas card’, he told the Daily Mail that the joyous image ‘uses rural settings to convey charm and good tidings’.

While it does not necessarily scream Christmas, it offers a touching insight into the family’s close bond, with Charlotte seen resting her head on her father’s shoulder and holding onto his arm, while a young Louis is sat between William’s legs.

‘A daffodil covered backdrop in the countryside has the feel of healing and rebirth which is an integral part of the festive season, especially when Catherine, who is promoting the merits of outdoor life to children, is in remission from cancer,’ Mr Fitzwilliams added.

[From The Daily Mail]

It’s probably just a cultural difference, but most Americans choose wintery, cozy, fireplace-adjacent or snowy photos for Christmas cards and we find it odd that the British royals are so weird about doing the same. I’d argue that Charles and Camilla are much better at this, even if their cards are rarely winter-themed. They usually choose nice, relaxed photos from one of their public events or an earlier portrait session. I remember during the pandemic, they even chose a funny photo of Charles adjusting Camilla’s mask (I’ve included it below). As I said, while these images aren’t particularly wintery, they’re not banging us over the head with spring or summer. There’s no reason why seeing a family in coats or sitting beside a fireplace would be “bad imagery” or lead to the fall of the British empire! It just feels like one more thing that William and Kate don’t give a sh-t about, one more thing where they just shrug and phone it in.

  1. Ok that sound like an answer but I still believe that Can’t and Peg do this one photo session a year and come out some pictures from said session because Peg can only stand to be around his beloved wife for short periods of time lol.

    • FloridaWoman says:

Seriously! I thought Kate was supposed to be all about the different seasons or whatever.

      • Neeve says:

If they insist on doing one photo shoot a year fair enough but they can at least do a wardrobe change, have some different back drops or staging or use the different themed rooms in their castles and palaces. They can hire real stylists and the photographer can do a fun mood board for all the holidays, birthdays and events needed. Just dedicate ONE DAY!

      • MY3CENTS says:

Just one more thing they dont give a rats ass about. Lazy WanKs.

      • Pam says:

I think you’re thinking of those videos where she’s leaping about like it’s a feminine product commercial. 🤣

    • Christine says:

I can’t believe they wrote a whole damn article to deflect from the fact that the family of mascots does one photo shoot per year, because they cannot stand each other. They aren’t even bothering to do different clothing options, to make it appear they were taken on different days. Same old, same old, bare minimum from the Wales.

    • BeanieBean says:

No, it doesn’t sound like an answer! It’s utter pishposh! With a great big dollop of bullsh*t!

  2. Sketchy says:

I find it hard to care about them at all, so when they phone it in, it just reads to me like they don’t care much either. If you force me to look at it, it’s a nice picture of the kids, William looks more relaxed then I’m used to seeing him and Kate looks like she was photoshopped in. Not starting rumors lol. I just don’t care for how she’s positioned. But then I always think she goes out of her way to try to look like the star of the show.

  3. Beverley says:

That Olan Mills photo creeps me out. Photoshopping KKKate’s arm to be long enough to reach all the way around George’s waist certainly was a choice. Why does this family lean so heavily into fakery?

  4. ChewieNYC says:

Honestly if they just put a holiday themed background/frame around the photo it would be fine. Plenty of cards we receive feature photos from all parts of the year and it’s totally fine. Our own pictures are always early Fall so the kids are in dresses and there are still blooms. It’s the lack of effort to make it at least a tad festive that’s annoying.

    • lamejudi says:

Don’t forget, it’s not a season for big gestures-or whatever nonsense Keen was spouting a few weeks ago.

    • Elly says:

I’ve noticed this too that people who send a family photo seem to pick the best one of the year which is usually a vacation photo but they place it on a holiday themed card with the frame, etc.

  5. Jais says:

My preference is to see something festive or holiday inspired. But not everyones is. It is what it is. Clearly the Wales are not into that kind of thing plus they do the bare minimum with one photo shoot a year in which they dole out photos in which they’re all wearing the same clothes. That said, this explanation is absurd. If the Wales are kitted out in winter clothes it might be symbolic of a rough year. Huh? That feels like such a juvenile take. And no the answer is they didn’t want to do more than one photo shoot together, at least not one shared with the public anyways.

  6. Blujfly says:

He is so full of it. In the past they likely just picked whatever picture and a formal picture, probably in part because the arduous printing process and reproduction process and mailing process took months. No one would read festive plaids and reds and bright colors as a family hunkered down after a tough year.

  7. Mads says:

Kate’s freakishly long arm makes its seasonal appearance and she does look photoshopped into the picture, her skin tone is darker than kids and William because her photo wasn’t taken at the same time and the natural light was different. I believe the photographer takes various photos of them in different poses for individual birthday, Father’s Day etc and then the wizard at the palace plays around and composes the “happy family” shot and the fawning UK press ignores what’s really happening.

  8. Lady Digby says:

I just see this as symptomatic of Will does the minimum approach with no concession to making an effort with anything work related. One photoshoot a year with her indoors elsewhere and the kids is all he’ll tolerate.

  9. Henny Penny says:

Maybe it’s actually because they don’t want the juxtaposition of the poors sitting in their freezing houses without food for their children seeing what their tax money is paying for. It might wake too many of them up.

  10. Tina says:

And next year if they do a holiday theme card then this man will twist himself into a knot and declare how lovely and appropriate it is and make it seem like any non holiday theme card is awful. These dinosaurs (fitwilliams, brown, Malone, bower etc) all need to go.

    • FancyPants says:

Yes, he’s really stretching to give them credit for thought that they definitely did *not* put into this.

      • BeanieBean says:

This exactly. This guy & ALL the rota rats do this, put way more thought into what the Wales’ do than they themselves.

  11. Amy Bee says:

What is Fitzwilliams talking about? It’s just a word salad. I can’t believe he was paid for this.

  12. Carol says:

I really despise Will and Kate, but I live in the US and I don’t know a single person whose Christmas card has a winter themed photo. Everyone usually takes a photo from their summer vacations and uses that. So I find this criticism bizarre. I would rather talk about how parts of this photo looks like it was photoshopped

    • Well they talk about why they don’t have pictures in the snow for Christmas to distract you from the weird photoshop.

      • Jais says:

Ha! That’s true. I mean I was annoyed last week about the lack of “festive.” Just bc it seems like such an easy win. But sure daffodils and long arms for the win.

    • Duke Ragu’s wife says:

100% agree with this comment! This is bizarre criticism…

      • Smatone99 says:

Because a Christmas photo is part of their job, which they’re paid millions for. Stop comparing them to your pleb friends, they’re royalty who don’t have to do a single thing called work. Someone puts toothpaste on Charles brush ffs (and did when he was POW). They can do more than one photoshoot a year given they take 5 or 6 overseas holidays a year including 2 ski trips.

    • Lorelei says:

@Carol, if they were normal people, I’d totally agree with you. But they’re not. Their one job is to keep the public who pays them millions upon millions entertained (and supposedly bring them hope and cheer, etc.). Using the same recycled photos over and over again is just unacceptable.

It doesn’t need to be a photo filled with red and green, but they should at least attempt to make it look like they put some effort into it, and not just grab a picture from an 8-month-old photo shoot. The point is that they don’t care about what they ‘should’ be doing.

W&K seem to simply resent the peasants and especially any expectations they have of them, and this is one (extremely juvenile!) way to show it.

    • HeatherC says:

The issue might be this is the same photo session they’ve used for everything lol. Father’s Day, birthdays….same photo shoot, same clothes, same poses. It reeks of laziness. Especially from an institution where they “have to be seen to be believed.”

  13. Lili says:

Why does William’s smile always look so pained in posed photos? When he smiles at people in real life he looks perfectly normal, but this just looks like he’s baring his teeth for the dentist.

  14. Nic919 says:

The issue is less about the lack of holiday theme and more that it is obvious this was all done in one photo shoot early in the year for multiple occasions, which is sloppy and lazy.
The entire point of them sending photos to the public in exchange for some privacy from the paparazzi and media is that it is supposed to look like the photos are brief glimpses in their lives to create the illusion that they are sharing something.
Instead they create an obvious fake scenario and shove the artifice in everyone’s faces with the same sweaters being worn across multiple photos.

    • Tina says:

That’s the problem the Media has now. The wales are giving absolutely nothing while still requiring all of the privacy and hands off approach. How does this work long term?

  15. Kristen from MA says:

In the US, daffodils are symbols of hope for cancer patients. Bunches of the flowers are often sold to fund raise for the American Cancer Society.

The same may be true in the UK, but I doubt the Wails considered the symbolism. They’re not that deep.

    • Sunniside up says:

We have McMillan nurses and they use the daffodil as a symbol as well, but to be fair the RF live mainly in the south of England and you would be hard put to find any snow in Windsor these days

    • Smatone99 says:

      🤣🤣🤣🤣

Kkkate hasn’t acknowledged any cancer cause or talked about her doctors. Please.

Lots of posts sticking up for lazy wails today.

  16. mycatlovestv says:

The photo with the gray background looks like a hostage photo. One of them should be holding up a current copy of USA Today.

    • Lorelei says:

      🤣

Seeing that photo again…unbelievable. I cannot fathom how so many people approved sending out that mess! It’s so awful, even for just a regular family picture, let alone a Christmas card that will be seen worldwide.

    • Magi7 says:

It’s ridiculous for a winter oriented holiday season. Not inclusive or reflective of the season, or spirit of the season. Especially for northern UK which may have snow. Miscommunication. Out of context so visually misaligned.

  17. Harlar says:

What I’ve noticed about WandK’s cards, even this years, is the muted rather dark colors which make it more “drab” and certainly not at all festive. As said above, they’ve obviously phone this in by using one mid-year shoot to for the entire year.

  18. Mtl.ex.pat says:

I don’t get it. Canadian here and a wintry photo sounds beautiful to me. Or a photo by a fireplace or a Christmas tree. Or of them and the kids volunteering somewhere for the holiday season. This is just them being lazy as usual recycling from the one day they bothered to get professional photos done.

    • Lorelei says:

American here agrees with you. And it’s not as if they don’t have tons of ways to get a photo like that, considering they went on not one but two luxury ski trips in 2025 and I’m sure there were fireplaces with snowy backdrops all over. W&K just don’t want make the slightest effort.

  19. KASalvy says:

If memory serves, they used a photo from one of their fancy ski trips when Charlotte was very young as a Christmas card, so they whole “not winter theme” is absolutely not protocol.

    • Smatone99 says:

Of course it’s not protocol! Who falls for this bs. There’s almost no royal protocols other than rank. They got criticised for the pic so they push out some bs about a new made up protocol.

  20. Mrs S says:

Festive or even wintery photo would be nice, but I don’t really care that much. These pictures are ok.

  21. QuiteContrary says:

Like I said, they could have found a field of red tulips.
    They just make zero effort.

    • Lucky Charm says:

Or at the very least wear red or a brighter green than drab olive (to me it looks like Kate is also wearing an olive green coat to match everyone.)

  22. Cherub says:

Is it because the only time they’re together in a wintry setting is during an exorbitant ski vacation?

  23. Villerose says:

My holiday cards I receive from people are a mix. Some people send fall themed/winter pics while others send pics that were clearly taken earlier in the year.

My sister got married in August so my mom chose a pic the photographer took at the wedding for this year’s card. It is clear the pic was taken in the summer but it’s a great picture of us featuring my now brother-in-law. I doubt anyone will look at it and think “Geez I wished they sent a more winter looking card” lol.

I have no strong feelings about this either way. I can criticize Kate and William for a bunch of stuff but I usually enjoy their holiday cards, minus the awful mall studio looking one. Harry and Meghan also rarely have done winter themed cards either.

  24. MSJ says:

The stupid narratives these Royal commentators proffer for Royal propaganda floors me again and again. 😂

I wonder how much money they made from this stupid column and on the podcast that they discussed it. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Surprised they didn’t say it was ‘Royal Protocol’. I wonder how many people believe what Richard said? 🤷🏽‍♀️

  25. GoodWitchGlenda says:

American here – many people I get cards from take their photos by the beach. Maybe bc I’m from California but..Also H&M did a spring/summer-y card with the kids..? Idk I guess I don’t get the problem?

    • Mtl.ex.pat says:

I think it’s that they recycled from their one photo shoot earlier in the year. To me, they’ve got all the time – given how little they work – and access to resources in the world and they couldn’t even be bothered to do something festive. It’s lazy calling it their Christmas card photo when nothing about it has any connection to the season AND it’s recycled because they can’t be arsed to do anything more than the minimum.
William: “Oh damn, have to release a Christmas photo.”
Kate: “shall we have the staff photographer come? Or I am a photographer I can set a timer and take a photo of us?”
William: “Nah, just send out the ones we did six months ago.”

  26. bisynaptic says:

So, rather a repudiation of the season, eh?

    • Lorelei says:

IMO it’s a repudiation, but of the public’s expectation to see something new or even vaguely “personal” about them. Laziness plays into it, of course, since we’re talking about W&K, but it’s also just an FU to everyone who thought they might see a photo of them not wearing the same damn clothes they’ve been wearing for almost every other picture they’ve released this year, or with their Christmas tree in the background, or anything like that.

  27. Magi7 says:

It’s ridiculous for a winter oriented holiday season. Not inclusive or reflective of the season, or spirit of the season. Especially for northern UK which may have snow. Miscommunication. Out of context so visually misaligned.

  28. tamsin says:

A white Christmas is only in some parts of the world. People in tropical climates, Africa and Asia celebrate Christmas too. People send pictures just to keep in touch, and show friends and family how the kids are growing or how we’re aging. My raised eyebrows over the Wales Christmas card is only for Kates floating arm around George. Everyone looks quite nice, but no family picture issued by this family is going to be met with skepticism and criticism after their so-called “frankenphoto.” And Harry and Meghan’s card this year is focussed on philanthropy, so neither their business nor their personal cards focused on Christmas. Love of family and helping others seemed to be the themes. I think the only Christmasy sight was Lili’s red tartan dress. Can’t get more Christmasy than that for a little girl.

    • Iolanthe says:

Such a beautiful country and they cant find anything else to showcase ..it could even be an indoor portrait like the beautiful one of the Monaco royals this year. This lot have rooms, cathedrals and palaces galore ..it would be wonderful to give people a glimpse of a historic room decked up for Christmas ..I remember seeing Chatsworth at this time , it was done up like a fairy tale . This is such a throw away moment , an old photo plonked among some daffs just doesnt make the cut or say Christmas. Winter or family traditions to me. Put the kids in some velvet or tartan , bring out the dogs as well , show a dressed up tree. The floral decorations including a gorgeous tree during the German state dinner shows what was possible . Even us plebeians with no such resources make our own holly , pine and ivy wreaths and garlands . What a waste of space these people are.

  29. Linney says:

We have used summer vacation photos for our holiday cards, but usually we use photos taken closer to the holidays. I find this picture odd because it is a “Spring” setting, they are dressed for Autumn and we have already seen photos from this one photo shoot. For me, it is just more indication of their “can’t be bothered” attitude and the fact that they probably are not physically together much as a family.
