Back in November, Deadline reported that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz were in talks to return for a fourth edition of The Mummy franchise. Can you believe that it’s been almost 27 years since the first one was released? I rewatched it about a year ago and it still holds up. Brendan was in the first three movies while Rachel was only in the first two, The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. Tom Cruise attempted to reboot the franchise in 2017, but only one movie came out and he went back to making more Mission: Impossible films.
At the time of Deadline’s reporting last year, nothing was official yet, but it sounded like The Mummy 4 was basically a done deal. People, myself included, got really excited for it. It sounds like those talks weren’t as finalized as we thought, though. When Brendan was asked about it during an interview with the Radio Times, he said while he’d love to do it, the final decision was not up to him.
Nearly two decades on from his last appearance in the series, Brendan Fraser has given his thoughts on returning to The Mummy for a fourth film.
It’s been nearly 27 years since The Mummy first hit cinemas, with daring adventurer Rick O’Connell catapulting Brendan Fraser to truly global stardom.
Now, in an interview in this week’s Radio Times magazine, Fraser has spoken on reports that The Mummy 4 may be on the cards.
“My lips are sealed! I’m hopeful to have good news soon because I know how popular the films were,” he said. “People say ‘I grew up watching that movie and now I’ve got kids…’ Let’s all keep our fingers crossed and light a candle.”
For many, it wouldn’t be The Mummy without Rick O’Connell, and that appears to include Fraser himself, who explained his thoughts on returning to the role.
“Would I like to? Absolutely. I’ve always said I like the idea and I always will. It’s just… Well, it’s not up to me to pull that trigger!”
Fraser’s O’Connell was the protagonist of all three films in The Mummy trilogy, last appearing in 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor opposite Jet Li, though it is reported that any new film in the series will skip over this.
I hope this is just a case of Brendan being cheeky and not wanting to confirm anything before the studio announces it. If not, I’d love to know what the hold up is. Are they still negotiating terms or waiting on a plot outline? Is it the studio or one of the actors? Who do we need to start writing letters or directing hashtags to?!
Those movies involve a lot of physical stunts, and Brendan almost died while filming the first movie. He had a lot of physical problems as a result of his injuries. I can understand why he or Rachel, who are almost 30 years older now, may be hesitant to film another one without some sort of guarantee about the physical nature of the roles. I believe Brendan when he says he’d love to do it, though. He knows how much people love the movies and even said in November that he’d waited a long time for “the call” about making another one. Hopefully, we get an official announcement soon. I will absolutely be there to watch a fourth Mummy movie on opening weekend.

Brendan was praised for being fat. Meanwhile every single actress is essentially anorexic which they can do with glp1. Look, I know exactly what will happen in say 5 plus years. Im sad that people my age don’t know. Anyway, yay! Anorexia and eating disorders. Don’t blame me. Im pointing it out. Look at the words Nordisk golden globes. So Meanwhile Brendan was praised for obesity and everyone at the globes was on glp1 and has an eating disorder
I am here for the return! Loved the first two, and I even really enjoyed the Tom Cruise one.
Brendan and Rachel had great chemistry on screen and they could take the story so many places.
I met Brendan Fraser at a ComiCon last year. Good LORD, that man exudes so much kindness! I met him with my son (after I forced my son to a The Mummy 1-3 marathon to catch up on the fine art of Brendan Fraser). I informed Brendan that we were to be married, and it has been our fate since both of us were in our 20’s, so we need to get the show on the road. He was simply a joy to meet, accepted our pending nuptials, and most impressively, was simply the BEST to my son (I think he has several sons himself, who also adore their dad). In fact, much to my chagrin, he chatted sweetly with my boy for most of the autographing leaving me to drool unattended.
And, including AAAALLLLL the other reasons this darling deserves a 4th movie, he recently said in an interview that the most important part of his role in the previous 3 films was how meaningful it was to him that women would approach him and tell him how The Mummy movies encouraged their eventual pursuit of careers and interests in Egyptology and history of previous civilizations. COME ON! Does this guy get any more perfect!? National Treasure, he is!!!
