Neil Young gives people in Greenland free access to all his music

It should never be undermined just how embarrassing it is that we have a president of the United States who said on the world stage, “Norway should’ve given me the Nobel Peace Prize, so I’m taking Greenland!” Greenland is a territory of Denmark, but expecting Dementia Don to distinguish between Nordic countries is about as far-fetched as expecting him to remember the difference between Greenland and Iceland. Throughout this interminable second term, Trump has been obsessed with obtaining each of these, a Nobel Peace Prize and Greenland. So much so that he accepted a second-hand prize from an actual winner (despite Nobel saying that doesn’t count), and united the people of Greenland into regularly protesting, many of them wearing MAGA hats: Make Americans Go Away. I’m so sorry, Greenland! And musician Neil Young is sorry too: the Canadian-American singer-songwriter believes Greenlanders should be rockin’ in their free world, so he’s giving them free access to all his music.

Neil Young is giving the people of Greenland the gift of song — his songs, that is.

The veteran rocker announced Tuesday on his blog that he is providing free access to his entire music catalog to residents of Denmark’s semiautonomous territory, whose futures have lately become a point of tension between the U.S. and NATO.

“I hope my music and music films will ease some of the unwarranted stress and threats you are experiencing from our unpopular and hopefully temporary government,” Young wrote. “It is my sincere wish for you to be able to enjoy all of my music in your beautiful Greenland home, in its highest quality.”

The offer is for a year — though Young said renewing is possible — and applicants need to have a Greenland-based cellphone. “This is an offer of Peace and Love,” he wrote.

Young’s manager confirmed to The Associated Press the rocker’s message was genuine.

The offer is in stark contrast to Young’s recent decision to deny listeners his catalog on the streaming Amazon Music platform, a swipe at its founder, Jeff Bezos, who has supported U.S. President Donald Trump.

“Amazon is owned by Jeff Bezos, a billionaire backer of the president,” Young wrote last week. “The president’s international policies and his support of ICE make it impossible for me to ignore his actions. If you feel as I do, I strongly recommend that you do not use Amazon.”

A representative for Amazon Music didn’t immediately respond for comment.

Young wrote an op ed on his website earlier this month calling the USA “a disaster,” and stating that “Donald Trump is destroying America bit by bit with his staff of wannabes.” Accurate. Young has long sparred with streaming platforms, like when he pulled his music from Spotify in protest of podcaster Joe Rogan’s episodes on COVID-19 vaccines. Young later relented and his music was added back.

It’s an obvious comment but no less true: Neil Young really does have a heart of gold. When he says the “highest quality” of his music, he means he’s giving access to the Neil Young Archives. If you have a cell phone with a Greenland number, visit Neil’s website here to claim your free music! As for the rest of us, support artists who are standing up to tyranny by buying their work on a non-Amazon platform of your choosing! I love that Young is taking on Bond Villain Jeff Bezos like this, by pulling his music from Amazon. We see time and time again that it really is the only way to reach the million & billionaires — when we stop buying their sh-t. Also, Young isn’t only generous in gifting his own full catalog, but at the end of his blog post he invites others to do the same: “We do hope other organizations will follow in the spirit of our example.” C’mon, artists, who’s gonna step up next?

Teach your children to be as giving and true to their ideals as Neil Young.

I have loved Neil Young since I was young. His music speaks to my heart. I hope he keeps on rockin’ in the free world for many years to come.
