Woke Olympian Hunter Hess speaks out after Donald Trump called him a ‘loser’

As soon as the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics began, Olympic athletes were required to give press conferences and speak to international media assembled in Italy. The American athletes got a lot of questions about the current (fascist) state of America, about ICE and about how it feels to represent their country abroad when so much despicable sh-t is happening back home. The American Olympians have been up for the challenge, and many have expressed nuanced sentiments about how much the Trump hostile takeover sucks. There was a viral Reuters clip over the weekend of two white American men, Olympic skiers Hunter Hess and Chris Lillis, speaking at a press conference about how it doesn’t feel great to represent America at this moment. Donald Trump responded by throwing a tantrum and targeting Hess in particular. Well, Hess is responding:

U.S. Olympic skier Hunter Hess has responded to President Donald Trump blasting him for saying he had “mixed feelings” about representing the U.S. at the winter games. The freestyle skier had said during a press conference on Saturday that representing the United States brings up “mixed emotions,” and that if he wins a medal, it would be more for his “family and the people that support me getting here” than his home country.

That, in turn prompted the POTUS to call him a “real loser” on social media.

“I love my country,” Hess said in a social media post Monday. “There is so much that is great about America, but there are always things that could be better. One of the many things that makes this country so amazing is that we have the right and the freedom to point that out.”

“The best part of the Olympics is that it brings people together, and when so many of us are divided we need that more than ever,” Hess added. “I cannot wait to represent Team USA next week when I compete. Thanks to everyone for their support.”

U.S. snowboarders at the Olympics also weighed in on the polemics with the U.S. president.

Women’s halfpipe champion Maddie Maestro, who is well positioned to earn her first Olympic medal, said she was proud to represent the U.S. but she’s “also saddened with what’s happening at home.”

“It’s really tough,” she added. “I feel like we can’t turn a blind eye to that. But at the same time, I represent a country that has the same values as mine, of kindness and compassion. And we come together in times of injustice.”

[From Variety]

“There are always things that could be better. One of the many things that makes this country so amazing is that we have the right and the freedom to point that out…” This is what I don’t get about the MAGA snowflake meltdown: they’re literally arguing that the Olympians don’t have “the right” to express mixed feelings about representing a country in the midst of violent turmoil. The snowflake argument is that the Olympians should be sent home, or not allowed to represent America in the Olympic games if the athletes don’t cosign every despicable thing Trump is doing. THAT is unamerican. To make an Olympian’s participation in the games contingent on their ability to regurgitate MAGA cult talking points. Incidentally, Senator Rick Scott is arguing that all of these woke Olympians *should* be sent home.

Freedom of speech, but only when MAGA is speaking. Do I have that right?

  2. Kitten says:

What he said was relatively tepid and uncontroversial and STILL, the MAGA freaks react with outrage. This is just Trump’s way of making sure that everyone is scared to say anything even vaguely critical of what the USA has become under his rule. That’s more of a reason for everyone who has any kind of platform to speak out. There’s power in numbers.

  3. Hypocrisy says:

Medicare fraud Rick Scott is no moral authority I would listen to. I am glad the olympians are speaking the truth but it should not be just them it should be every American with a platform or audience. I hope all these brave olympians win medals 🥇. I’m truthfully surprised the fat 🍊 hasn’t been screaming for a gold medal like he has been for a Nobel prize 🏆. I hate what this country has become and I don’t see it getting better anytime soon 💔.

Tyrants will be tyrants, but the Orange One doesn’t have the power to rescind their freedom of speech.

I applaud these brave young people. They give me hope. Retribution from MAGA doesn’t stop at verbal hate. I hope that they’re prepared for sanctions from the corporate cowards that cravenly bow to Trump. Here’s an example of what happened to one of the judges (a Canadian) at the ICC.

excerpt from The Toronto Star, Feb 9, 2026
“Her credit cards stopped working. A bank transfer to newlyweds in the U.K. has been stuck in limbo for months. She can’t travel to the U.S. — she was even disinvited from virtually attending a recent international law conference in New York.

And in a dystopian turn that could be pulled from a Ray Bradbury novel, her smart speaker no longer responds after Amazon cut off access: “Suddenly, Alexa wouldn’t talk to me.”

Last August, Kimberly Prost became one of several judges and prosecutors at the International Criminal Court (ICC) targeted by Donald Trump’s administration with sanctions as a result of their work trying to hold perpetrators of alleged war crimes and other atrocities accountable.
    ..
Prost was sanctioned because she had previously authorized an ICC probe into alleged crimes in Afghanistan, including incidents that may have involved U.S. personnel. Others were sanctioned for work related to Israel, including the ICC’s arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Trump is a tyrant. Sic semper tyrannis.

Just read a good piece on this. Amber Glenn is getting death threats merely because she offered encouragement to other LGBTQ+ people.

I hate this timeline so much.

Who are we kidding? Trump was sundowning, saw the name ‘Hunter’ and was triggered.

  9. jferber says:

What we’re really saying is that free speech in our country has now become potentially dangerous to the speaker. THAT is fascism right there, and Hess nailed it with “we have the right and the freedom to point that out.” That is what Dictator Trump objects to (among many other things): the First Amendment. But let’s not kid ourselves that the orange monster has read the Bill of Rights when he’s clearly never read (or gotten within ten feet of) our Constitution. He plays by Putin’s rules.

  10. jferber says:

I love Hunter Hess! Whatever he does in the games (and I don’t watch them) he’s a winner in my book.
