Windsor locals to King Charles: we’re not paying for state visits anymore

Even though King Charles has been battling cancer for the past two years, he’s kept up an impressive schedule of hosting state visits. People had gotten used to Queen Elizabeth II’s state-visit schedule in her later years, where she hosted world leaders maybe once or twice a year, and usually in Buckingham Palace. Charles really changed it up. Buckingham Palace is still undergoing a decade-long renovation and refurbishment, so Charles has used Windsor Castle to stage and host state visits, conferences and all kinds of significant meetings. The problem? Apparently, the monarch makes the local community pick up the costs of all of these state visits. That… is really ridiculous?? The Windsor locals think it’s ridiculous too and they’re refusing to pick up the costs.

A council has said it will not support any more state visits after the costs of hosting Donald Trump at Windsor Castle last year were not reimbursed. The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead said it had spent at least £350,000 on visits in 2025, including that of French president Emmanuel Macron in July. The council said the same funding could have paid the salaries of nine primary school teachers for a year.

Next month the President of Nigeria is due to come to Windsor to meet King Charles. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) was contacted for a comment.

The council said: “While we appreciate the wider impact this may have for our multi-agency partners, with planning already under way for the visit in March by the president of Nigeria, we don’t have a budget for this support. And, quite simply, local taxpayers can’t continue to be expected to shoulder the burden of decisions made by government to host state visits in Windsor.”

Council deputy leader Lynne Jones said the authority was still talking to the government about the upcoming visit, but would only do “the basics”.

“We’re not prepared to go beyond that without that formal reassurance that the costs will be reimbursed,” she said. “We enjoy the events that are here. We understand that Windsor Castle is a big draw. We like the fact that our borough hosts these events – and we’re very very successful at doing them – but we really cannot accept that our residents are having to pay for a central government event.”

Exactly – the local community appreciates the fact that the castle is a huge tourist attraction, and it’s sort of cool that all of these state visits are being staged in Windsor now, but it’s completely unreasonable to expect the local community to pick up the costs of coordinating security, shutting down roads, etc, all because Charles is now hosting four or five state visits a year. They can debate who pays for the cost of these visits, whether it be the government or the Windsors out of their annual funding, but it should not be the locals. This is actually really scandalous.

It sounds as if Charlie is doing as many state visits as he can, while he still can.

  2. Miss Scarlett says:

    Good 👏🏼 for 👏🏼 these 👏🏼 residents!!

They have to pay for all this government stuff? Um NO!!

That in adding to being kicked out of 150 acres of public land that people paid to access?

No wonder the royals need a crisis manager – this is insane.

  3. jais says:

Dang. Yeah, the locals shouldn’t be expected to pay this. They just shouldn’t. But you know William is in the background nodding his head and going so what you’re saying is that I should do less state visits when I’m king…perfect, consider it done.

    • Mac says:

There is no way my local community could shell out 350,000 pounds for anything. Local services would need to be cut to come up with that kind of money.

  4. Midnightatthemuseum says:

I’m one of these residents. If you read what the article says Lynne Jones only mentions the Government, the King is not mentioned because it’s not his call, he acts as host on behalf of the Government. Your headline is at best misleading but basically just plain wrong! Let me correct it for you, ‘Windsor locals to U.K. Government: we’re not paying the full cost of state visits any more.’ You’re welcome.

    • Mac says:

I’m sorry you are getting stuck with the bill. That seems grossly unfair.

    • Blubb says:

I’ll go with you that it is a government’s job. But what I thought from the outside is that the over 100 millions from the Crown estate pay for this, while the income from the Duchies is for more private use? And who paid when these visits were in BP?

      • Christine says:

Yeah, why can’t the budget that was used when they were hosting at BP just be moved to Windsor? This is outrageous, how is this not bigger news!

  5. Roseberry says:

Sorry- I’m Side-eyeing this a bit. Windsor gets a huge income boost from these events and has done for years ; hospitality providers all booked up, boost in sales at local shops, additional employment for locals and bonus PR for all the media attention. I remember after Meghan & Harry’s wedding there being a breakdown of a £200 million boost to the Uk economy.
How all of a sudden when a visit is planned for an African head of state it’s suddenly an issue.

    • sueinorleans says:

There is a steady income from tourism for Windsor that I doubt sees a significant boost when there is a state visit. Maybe a one or two day blip at best. The costs incurred aren’t worth it. I am absolutely astonished to learn that the locals are expected to foot the bill.

    • Becks1 says:

There’s a big difference between a royal wedding once a decade or so and 4-5 state visits a year. I cant imagine the state visits do a lot to boost tourism to windsor.

      • Chaine says:

Just speculation but IMO wouldn’t a state visit dampen the tourism, as roads and tourist sites might be shut down for several hours or even days due to security preparations and measures? Maybe it’s not the same as in the U.S., but here airports get shut down and flights delayed and no one can go in or out on the surrounding highways just so Air Force One can take off and land. A president who shall remain nameless having Air Force One fly out of the same airport as me and probably several thousand others miss a connecting flight on vacation once. Can’t imagine the restrictions that go into Donald Trump coming for a sleepover at a castle.

    • BrackenSweetwater says:

From the sounds of it, they are only objecting because the expenses for the most recent state visit weren’t reimbursed by the UK government/the Palace for the first time.

And it makes sense, this is absolutely not a local government job and it is standard practice for the national level government to reimburse the local governments when they have to incur significant expenses doing a national level government job.

Makes you wonder why the expenses for the Trump state visit were not reimbursed.

  6. Worktowander says:

As the resident of a Minnesota city that’s still owed more than $250,000 in costs for a 2024 Trump campaign visit: Good work, Windsor.

  7. Laura D says:

Surely this begs the question as to why Councils are expected to pay for these events when the costs for hosting events such as these are supposed to be covered in the Sovereign Grant. This sounds like another royal scam!
