Travis Kelce seems open to hyphenated names, will he become Travis Swift-Kelce?

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding is probably going to happen soon, like within the next six weeks or so. My theory is that the wedding will happen in June and NOT in New York. But many outlets believe that their wedding will be in New York or Rhode Island on or around the Fourth of July. While the wedding is being planned, it seems like Travis and Taylor might be having conversations about a possible name-change. Would Taylor actually change her name to Taylor Kelce? Would Travis change his name to Travis Swift? Or would one or both of them hyphenate? Well, Travis has been thinking about it.

Travis Kelce gave a sign that he and Taylor Swift are changing their last names after getting married. The NFL athlete, 36, “liked” an Instagram post Tuesday from the podcast “Bussin With the Boys,” in which hosts Will Compton and Taylor Lewan discussed if Swift will change her last name to Kelce after tying the knot.

A guest on the podcast noted that Swift was “way more globally famous” than Kelce, and that Kelce would have to change his name. The hosts joked that “Travis Swift” was a fitting name for Kelce, but that “Taylor Kelce” also sounded good.

They then landed on the two hyphenating their last names to “Swift-Kelce.”

“No, you gotta go Swift-Kelce — Travis Swift-Kelce,” they enthusiastically said.

Fans loved Kelce liking the post, with one fan commenting, “Travis liking this is hilarious 😂😂 that’s why he’s perfect for her.”

While Taylor plays around with tradwife-esque branding, I think she would be genuinely horrified by the idea of giving up her maiden name in any way, even to hyphenate it. I also think Travis is the kind of guy who doesn’t really care or have strong opinions about his wife changing her name. But I agree, if there’s a name change, it will be hyphenated. I just don’t think there will be a name change for either of them.

As I understand the USA politics right now, if Taylor changes her name, it will no longer match the name on her birth certificate, which means she loses the right to vote. Her name is not hyphenated on her birth certificate either, so even a hyphenated name could cause her to lose her vote.
OTOH, if it happened to a very famous white woman, maybe USA citizens and lawmakers alike would stand up and take back their sanity. So maybe it would be a public service for her to change her name, lose her right to vote, then fight back?

They don’t strike me as people interested in fighting for anyone’s social rights.

She has a passport. As long as the name on the passport matches the name on the voting roll, it’s sufficient proof of citizenship to allow her to vote.

The problem is that about half of all Americans do not have passports. So for those people, the name on their birth certificate must match the name on the voting roll to prove citizenship (documents that prove name changes – marriage licenses, court orders, etc. do not count for anything). That creates a problem for women like my mother, who changed her name when she married my father – in 1966. She let her last passport expire around 2010, when my father’s Parkinson’s made international travel impossible for them (he died of pancreatic cancer in 2020). She would need to spend at least $180 to get a brand new passport since hers is too long expired to qualify for a renewal.

It’s not losing the right to vote (yet), just harder to vote. We have to have names that match an official document showing citizenship. So, birth certificate is one option. Passport is another option. So anyone who has changed their name can still vote as long as they have a valid, unexpired passport with the name. And most Americans don’t have a passport, and it costs money and time to get a passport, so it’s a significant barrier to voting for people with name changes.

Taylor should stay Taylor Swift. No point changing her name under this government.

Tradwife branding?? Where? Because she likes skirts and baking sourdough? Her most recent project has her in sequins and fishnets on all the artwork, and includes the phrase “I’m married to the hustle”

      AGREED.

I love to bake, I love dresses and flowers and season tablescapes and I am nurturing and in a heterosexual relationship where I cook every night. I also have my own f*cking bank account and a job that provides me freedom, safety and power and I vote NDP (dem-socialists for the non-Canadians). Nothing tradwife coded about that.

Taylor has branding so she probably won’t change her professional name, but I think you can call yourself anything you want professionally while having a different legal name.

It’s sweet if they both hyphenate their names, but neither of them will use the hyphen professionally.

Yes, the current administration is all about taking the vote from women, who are the people most likely to have a different name than their birth certificate. My friend’s husband recently apologized to her profusely for wanting her to take his name, but she does have a passport. Still, everyone here should know that if you have a legal name change, you CAN have your birth certificate reissued. There are law firms that specialize in this. Google it.

Changing your name is dumb and complicated, no one should do it anymore. Call yourself whatever you want but leave the legalese alone.

I think it’s cute that Travis liked the post about him changing his last name to Kelce-Swift. It demonstrates he can joke about Taylor’s level of fame vs. his. For the record I don’t think either of them will be changing their name.

  7. Magdalena says:

Nah, Kelce-Swift sounds way better than Swift-Kelce 🙂

Though I’m beginning to think that Taylor may be over this whole thing by now.
