Regina Hall: If you had to give up one, would you give up sex, love or money?

Regina Hall was on the Tonight Show last week promoting Scary Movie, the sixth installment in the franchise and the third from the Wayans brothers, who wrested back control after the studio stole it from them after the second film. (That wasn’t in the interview but Marlon Wayans has talked about it.) Regina always tells a good story and her interviews are fun to watch. Fallon opened by congratulating her on One Battle After Another’s Oscars. She joked that Sean Penn had campaigned so hard for his. We know he did not, and no one mentioned this but Regina should have received a best supporting actor nom for that film. Regina posed a hypothetical to Fallon that men and women answer differently: If you had to give up sex, love or money for life, what would it be? I know my answer, and I bet a lot of you feel the same.

On Sean Penn winning the Oscar
Regina: That was embarrassing. You saw how hard he campaigned.

Would you give up sex, love or money for life?
Regina: I did this survey at my job. If you had to give up one thing – sex, love, or money, which one would it be?

Jimmy: For me, I’m all about love. So I got to have love… money.

Regina: All the men say money. All the women say sex. We want to have sex, but we need the money for the upkeep. How much sex are you having with no money?

Jimmy: There’s people out there with no money having sex. I was one of those kids, I never really cared about money. We were a middle-class to low-class family, but we had the best time. We had the best parties.

Regina: Ask your mom. It takes care now. As a woman, there’s a certain point in life you’re like ‘I’ve got to get the nails done, I’ve got to get the hair done.’

[From The Tonight Show transcript, edited for clarity]

This is such a great question. Of course I would give up sex, I’m a woman over 50, but does that include getting off alone? Because my answer might be different for that one. Also, what kind of love are we talking about? Is it all forms of love, like familial and platonic love, or just romantic love? What level of broke does she mean? Is it homeless broke or just getting by? I posed this question to four women over 40 and they all said sex! Regina is right. Fallon should ask his mom.

Incidentally, Scary Movie 6 was top at the box office this weekend. It made a whopping $105 million globally its opening weekend and outperformed Scream 7. Horror movies are having such a moment and I am here for it.

  1. Eurydice says:

Sex. It leads to pregnancy, kids and weirdness with men. Love you can get from friends, family or a pet. And you need money to eat.

  2. C-No says:

I’m already not having sex, so that’s an easy choice!

  3. Donna says:

Love and money in order to live comfortably are continuous joys that you enjoy every moment. I enjoy a good orgasm as much as the next person but it would be an easy choice for me to live without giving up the love or money.

  4. Mel says:

Yeah, I’d give up sex to travel, eat great meals and wear fantastic clothes while I donate to my favorite charities??? HECK YEAH!

  5. Tuesday says:

I’m a woman and I immediately said money, but thinking more about it, probably love. I’m in the process of getting divorced. I’m jaded.

  6. Jais says:

I’m not a horror person but I’m always here for Regina hall. And her Sean Penn callout. That man shouldn’t have won.

  7. Lala11_7 says:

The way TOO many Men approach & apply sexual techniques with Women? I’m NOT surprised 🫤

  8. Blair Warner says:

I would pay money to never have to have sex again! I am a woman over 45 and I am over it.

  9. Kate says:

Wait, her comment on Sean’s Oscar for their movie together. She said “that was embarrassing “. What did she mean, that he didn’t show up to receive it ??? Or that he got it so easily without having to campaign at all?

  10. Mario says:

Sex. 100% absolutely. Would I miss it? Sure. But the other two are essential to my life, security, and happiness in fundamental ways that sex (which I’ve lived long stretches without before and could easily have to do again if my spouse or I were to be injured, take ill, or be separated for any stretch of time) is not. This is not even a question for me.

  11. Elly says:

Great, what about if you have NONE of those three things in your life in the first place? 😂

  12. Lily says:

I gave up on love am sex thirteen years ago and I never had money. You’re in a lucky position in life to have all three options.

  13. Jferber says:

I lost love and sex and money isn’t enough for a happy life. It just isn’t. Yes, better to have it than not, but in itself does not bring happiness, imo.

  14. Jferber says:

Regina Hall is a really good actress. She starred in a really good movie with one of my crushes, Sterling K. Brown.
