Naomi Campbell hilariously tries “petulant diva” act for Oprah, fails

I hope everyone watched Naomi Campbell’s epic appearance on Monday’s Oprah. It was almost as insane as the Rielle Hunter interview, only I get the feeling Oprah kind of likes Naomi Campbell, whereas Oprah thought Rielle was a crazy bitch (truth). I was proud that Oprah didn’t send softballs to Naomi the entire time, but Oprah seemed preoccupied with the whole question of “Why you so mad? What’s behind that anger?” Meanwhile, Naomi gave Oprah a look every now and then like “You want see what’s behind the anger, Oprah? It’s a bedazzled phone, and it’s coming straight for your head.”

No, I jest. Naomi did tell Oprah what it was like inside her head when she’s about to attack someone – Naomi told Oprah she “sees red” and “Then I don’t see. I act out. [Immediately afterwards] I feel remorseful. I feel ashamed. I feel for them… [I think,] ‘What have I done to them?’ If I’ve hurt them.” To her credit, Naomi did sound slightly genuine. Maybe she does feel bad after she beats someone – many abusers do. When pressed for further explanation of “why?”, Naomi told Oprah: “I think it comes from a deeper place than that. It comes from another type of emotional disorder, because it’s not just, ‘I don’t get what I want. I throw…It comes from, I think, an abandonment issue… just trying to build up a family around me that’s not my immediate family. And if I feel a mistrust, then I really just…all my cards go down.”

Naomi also talked about her cocaine addiction: “I never, ever had to have a dealer. It made you feel like insatiable, but at the end, it was a destroyer. It’s really a devil’s drug.” And her sobriety, telling Oprah she’s been sober from drugs for six years, and sober from alcohol for a year and a half.

Now, one of the more interesting parts was Naomi discussing the most recent incident of violence and insanity, when she was being interviewed by ABC News two weeks ago. When questioned by an ABC reporter about allegedly receiving a blood diamond from genocidal war criminal Charles Taylor, Naomi refused to answer certain questions, then walked out of the interview, slapping a camera on her way out. When Oprah asked her about the incident – not just the ABC interview, but the incident with Charles Taylor, Naomi’s response was very f-cked up. First, regarding the “slapping the camera” thing, Naomi said she never punched the camera, and “There definitely is sound effects… There were three cameras, and I went to walk out the door, and the other one came in the way. So I moved the first one out to get to the door, and there were two more.” But, Naomi won’t talk about the blood diamond she allegedly received because “I don’t want to put my family in danger.” Here’s more:

Naomi Campbell told Oprah Winfrey today that she fears for the safety of her family and that is why she has refused to cooperate with prosecutors who are trying a former African dictator for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Prosecutors allege that Charles Taylor, former president of Liberia, gave Campbell a blood diamond, the kind of gem Taylor is accused of using to buy guns for rebel groups in neighboring Sierra Leone who terrorized civilians and killed and maimed tens of thousands.

“I don’t want to be involved in this man’s case—he has done some terrible things and I don’t want to put my family in danger,” Campbell told Oprah and her millions of viewers during an episode of the talk show that will air Monday.

Oprah was attempting to ask Campbell about a dinner in South Africa that was attended by Mia Farrow, Campbell, other celebrities and then-South African president Nelson Mandela. Charles Taylor was also present just before the dinner. According to Farrow, Campbell told her the morning after the dinner that Taylor had sent some of his men to her room in the night to present her with a large uncut diamond.

Campbell told Oprah that she was a guest of Mandela at his home at the time of the September 1997 dinner, and that Charles Taylor had shown up unexpectedly.

“He wasn’t invited,” said Campbell. “He wasn’t part of our group, but he did show up. We understood that after it was explained to us.”

At New York Fashion Week in February, Campbell denied receiving a diamond from Taylor when asked about it by ABC News.

“I didn’t receive a diamond and I’m not going to speak about that, thank you very much. And I’m not here for that,” said Campbell.

She stormed out of the interview, slapping a producer’s camera.

Campbell claimed to Oprah that there was “a sound effect” added to the ABC News reports on the incident.

ABC News did not add any sound effects to the ABC News reports on the alleged blood diamond gift, which aired April 22 on both World News and Nightline.

[From ABC News]

Really? You’re going to play the “he could come after my family if I have to admit to the war crimes tribunal at the Hague that Charles Taylor gave me an uncut blood diamond” card? How played out! Naomi is so full of sh-t it’s not even funny. The fact that she wouldn’t even answer the question about whether or not she received a blood diamond destroys whatever genuine remorse she may have had about her abusive personality.

Also, do you know what I enjoyed? Naomi’s “boyfriend” was in the audience – he’s a Russian billionaire named Vladimir Doronin. He’s married, and has been for a long time, although he told Oprah, he “has been separated more than 10 years.” I enjoyed Oprah’s judgy voice when she was questioning “Vlad” about his marriage. I chuckled, I really did. I didn’t think Oprah was that ballsy.

It was like a car accident: I couldn’t turn away.
It makes me wonder how on earth a Russian billionaire can’t divorce his wife. What’s stopping him? Money?
I think the blood diamond issue shouldn’t be targeted at Naomi, because it then becomes a distraction to the real issue. She didn’t create the blood diamond trade or the conflicts within these countries, however I do wonder when she’ll grow up and stop going after emotionally unavailable men or men who only love themselves?

  2. lin234 says:

Her response about the blood diamond makes me think that she really did receive one. Should we believe a diva who beats up the help or a woman who has given a ton of children a home? I choose Mia.

  3. Bonfire Beach says:

All I can think of when I see her is that beauty isn’t only skin deep. She would be a stunningly beautiful woman if her personality didn’t shine through. All I can see is her ugliness inside.

  4. Snarf says:

This woman is in a class all by herself.

  5. Just a Poster says:

Oh snap! I think I just became an Oprah fan again.. I hate when that happens.

Okay show of hands gang.. how many here think Naomi has the diamond and is keeping it for herself?

  6. Victoria says:

    @Bonfire Beach

Me too! I have always thought “she’s pretty on the outside but NOT on the inside”.

  7. Victoria says:

Naomi probably sleeps with that diamond under her pillow!

  8. Oenix says:

I did watch the interview and it made me want to give Naomi a hug. Really. She came across as a genuine and sensitive person. Her body language was that of a child wanting to please but expecting to be spanked. I believe her explanation for “acting up” and that she is really trying to be a better person. It seems like the most basic act of kindness toward her reduces her to tears. As if she isn’t used to people being nice to her. As if, deep down, she doesn’t believe she deserves it. Not trying to be condescending… Naomi came across as a hurt child in the body of a grown woman… I could see why she attracts the sympathy of good judges of character such as Mandela and Oprah… seeing her in the company of either reinforces my impression that deep inside she’s a child in needs of adult supervision/coaching/guidance. Naomi came across as someone who didn’t have the time/chance to mature inside… and I think that is the reason she handles anger by throwing a tantrum.. that’s what kids and emotionally immature adults do but she is not an inherently evil person… just a late bloomer in the maturity department.

As for the boyfriend, me-no-approve. I cannot help but have the feeling that it isn’t an “emotionally balanced” relationship. Financially, they migh be on par but not so much emotionally. He comes across as “The Man” and her as “The woman-Child”. Perhaps in away he is helping her grow up but I am a bit leery of her moving to Moscow; being some sort of a fashion ambassador there. Last but not least that he is still MARRIED. Between Naomi and Vlad there’s enought money to more than make up what he’d lost in a divorce… so that he remains married inspite of the backlash SHE is facing for being a mistress (Yes Naomi, that’s what you are: amistress NOT a girlfriend) tells me something about him. He is not ready or willing to give up the conveniences being “married” provides.

It may work for Naomi, but me personally, even if we were not planning on getting married, I’d be more comfortable to be with a divorced man. Then to say that she is on good terms with “the wife” adds insult to injury. But that’s me.

  9. yore says:

ZZZZ – Oprah was at her most sycophantic once again. The part where she was fawning over how beautiful Naomi is was so weird. After all the self help journeys O has been on, you’d think she would’ve figured out that beauty is only skin -deep and when you’re feeding the monster inside like Naomi is – that ISN’T worthy of praise and respect …a pretty face and mock humility just doesn’t cut it.

  10. Lem says:

I watched some en espanol, which I no habla, last night about 3 a.m…. made O more bearable.
Agree Naomi seemed immensely childlike; strangely so for a 50 year old woman. Hot Mama she is beautiful of the outside! Hot mess she has issues…

  11. canadianchick says:

Yep she’s got the diamond under her pillow.

  12. mollination says:

“I can’t tell you about the blood diamond because the family that I just claimed I don’t have and thus is the reason why I beat people may be in danger”

  13. imo says:

@ Oenix, ITA with everything you said. My general attitude towards Naomi is she needs someone to stand up to her @ least once so she can stop her childish behavior. After watching the interview, I felt sorry for her. It just goes to show you beauty and money isn’t all that matters

  14. Catherine says:

She reminds me of a spoiled child who gets cornered and brings on the tears to get out of it.
There is nothing genuine about this woman.

  15. bellaluna says:

That she has the blood diamond is only part of the problem. The fact that she refuses to testify about the blood diamond is a much larger contributor to the problem as a whole. If truly victimised people in Africa are willing/able to testify, when the risk to their families and themselves is absolutely life-threatening, why won’t this pampered brat?

  16. gen says:

    Thank You Mollination!!! 🙂 hehehehe

I’m curious to know how she grew up.

  17. Oenix says:

    Catherine:
She IS a child in the body of a 40 year old woman hence the reason she comes across being genuine. Call it delayed development from having been in her industry since she was 15. She IS genuine! Doesn’t mean we should give her a free pass like we would a child, just that she seems to be recently grasping the magnitude of her actions and is now trying to deal with it. You’ll notice Oprah chided her like a child… and Naomi responded likewise….

  18. Oenix says:

For those of you commenting as if her testimony would lift a huge veil off to reveal all sorts of sinister scenarios – that she did in fact receive a diamond doesn’t really prove anything. Does it? To me, at least, it would mean that some men give her expensive presents but it doesn’t really tell me much about the man’s character. May be he is generous? May be it’s a down payment for other “activities” – otherwise, I get nothing else. May be I am way too dumb or uninformed to read much more into it….

  19. K.C. says:

I really hate the type of celebrity that is truly only a pretty face and body, yet acts like they are somewhat intelligent. It truly seems to be taking over Hollywod lately. Naomi Campbell is one of them. Just admit that you are nothing more than eye candy-that right there is smarter than ANYTHING she has ever said in her life, to my knowledge.

  20. Aspie says:

She’s gorgeous but has alot of issues. I think Oprah did a great job with asking a few good questions.

  21. j. ferber says:

    Mollination, you rock. LOL.

  22. Lady Gaga is so great!
