Woody Allen defends Roman Polanski, “he did something wrong & he paid for it”

'You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger' premiere during the 63rd Annual Cannes Film Festival

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the infamous “Polanski petition” – of which many major American, British and French celebrities have already signed – is being circulated around the Cannes Film Festival. I suppose the petition’s instigator, Bernard-Henri Levy, hopes that the petition finds it’s way in front of someone else high-profile enough that his or her name will make the difference? Ugh. In any case, Polanski does have many defenders who are already speaking up on his behalf while they attend the Cannes Film Festival. One of those people? Woody Allen, who was involved in his own sketchy, gross scandal, although it wasn’t with an underage girl. It was with his step-daughter Soon-Yi, and she’s now his wife. Woody says that we should be over this whole Polanski thing at this point, because Polanski “did something wrong and he paid for it.” What?

Woody Allen has restated his support for fellow filmmaker Roman Polanski, who is in house arrest in connection with a 33-year-old sex scandal.

Allen said Polanski “was embarrassed by the whole thing,” “has suffered” and “has paid his dues.” He said Polanski is “an artist and is a nice person” who “did something wrong and he paid for it.”

Polanski pleaded guilty in 1978 to unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl. He was taken into custody in September and is currently under house arrest in Gstaad, Switzerland.

Earlier this week, new allegations surfaced when a British actress claimed Polanski had sexually abused her when she was 16.

It was not clear whether Allen was aware of the new allegations when he made the remarks in an interview Saturday with France Info radio from the Cannes Film Festival. Allen had previously signed a petition calling for Polanski’s release.

Allen’s relationship with actress Mia Farrow ended in scandal and New York tabloid headlines in 1992, when she found out he was having an affair with her adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn, then 22. Allen married Previn in 1997.

[From Huffington Post]

Apparently, Charlotte Lewis’s claims have made little to no impact on the Polanski-love felt in Cannes. Although I think it’s popular opinion that all of these people have signed the petition because they feel the same way as Woody Allen – that Polanski has already “suffered” et cetera – I really think many of them signed because they consider Polanski a genius, and that genius should be made certain behavioral allowances. That’s just my theory. Because I think the other argument, the one that Woody is making, about Polanski suffering and already paying for his crime(s) is bullsh-t.

  1. Jimmy Dean says:

Wow, these pervs really stick together huh?

Hollywood’s defense of Polanski really should point out to all that celebs have become so far removed from the human experience as to see themselves as above certain laws.

Inconsistent application of the law kills democracy.

  2. Bite me says:

    I need a hot bath

  3. Vi says:

    not really a great endorsement

  4. 1 qt of 1 % says:

Seriously? Of course the pot and kettle stick together.
Look at me, I am married to my daughter and I am siding with a pedophile. Surprise Surprise

  5. Leek says:

That’s great. Only an artist can support pedophiles and do the waltz with dictators. When will Hollywood realize that the joke is on them?

  6. Pont Neuf says:

Polanski is a pig. Does anyone remember how strongly he was criticized after Sharon Tate’s horrible murder by the Manson family, when he appeared in ‘Life’ magazine, casually talking about how “traumatized” he was by the events while posing artistically in the murder scene? Apparently, some people deal with grief by vainly self-promoting. Such a callous person only cares about the consequences of their actions, after they are exposed as the uncaring, selfish and narcissistic individuals they are.

And Woody Allen should shut up. He is one to talk. Didn’t Mia Farrow discover one good day that he had been having an affair with Soon Yi since she was 13-years-old, and had been trading naked pictures and body fluids?

Disgusting but, sadly, not surprising. A pedophile who thinks that his “talent” (what was the last remotely decent film he did?) allows him to do whatever he wants, publicly defends another arrogant pedophile.

  7. Tess says:

The beauty of the concept of “Justice” in the United States is that it is supposed to be blind.

But the elite class wants to make exceptions for the groups they decide are more “special” than the rest of us.

I guess jaded directors they consider “geniuses” fall into the special, protected category.

  8. ViktoryGin says:

Woody Allen, STFU! You have no credibility in this situation as you have no qualms about f*cking your stepdaughter.

    @ Jimmy Dean,

Makes me wonder if these genius directors have a whole network of clandestine whitewashing going on. Like, you don’t tell that I just bought this 12 year old virgin, and I won’t tell that you’re bonking your nephew. (Hypothetical, of course.)

  9. Victoria says:

@Point Neuf: Yes you are correct. Mia Farrow found nude photos of Soon Yi in Woody Allen’s apartment.

  10. Marjalane says:

Ewwwwwww. I hope that The Powers That Be, have something special in mind for pigs like Polanski and Allen.

  11. Gwen says:

    *puke*

  12. Whatever says:

One disgusting old pervert sticking up for another one. No surprise here. How has he “paid for it”? By living in mansions in France? Uh, right. Woody is gross.

  13. Shay says:

I don’t see how running away absolves Polanski, but Allen probably means it from an egotistical point of view, but Polanski’s career didn’t suffer, he just continued doing what he did.
What can be expected from Woody Allen? He is just as perverted as Polanski.

  14. YeaRight! says:

How exactly did Mr Polanski “suffer”?

He continued directing, continued to live in a lavish lifestyle, continued to be able to prey upon young women…

I haven’t heard one of these Hollywierdo’s speak up for victims of pedophiles…and Polanski is just that, a pedophile.

  15. nycmom10024 says:

I want to move past Woody Allen’s past. But when he sides with Polanski stating that the USA should be going after all the rapist and robbers here; (Yep he said that in the full statement)
It is hard to reconcile the devoted father he is with his two younger girls, with the disgusting beast I fear that he really is. The continued support of Polanski says more about the people still supporting him than almost anything else.

  16. nenasiek says:

is there an actual list? and if there is, who da hell signed then?

  17. rkintn says:

GACK!! Srsly, if WE the people would stop supporting pervs like Woody Allen and Roman Polanski this would all be a moot point, wouldn’t it?

I say put your money where your mouth is and boycott anything that anyone who has signed that petition has ever done or will ever do. I guarantee when WE the people stop giving credence to the whacked out views of entertainers, WE’ll stop hearing about them in public.

Whitewash it all you want..Roman Polanski is a pedophile and child rapist. I hope he ends up in prison with the biggest baddest junkyard dog they have as a roommate.

  18. lucy2 says:

I’m trying to figure out in what twisted reality Mr. Allen thinks Mr. Polanski has “paid for” his crimes.

  19. GatsbyGal says:

No Woody, Polanski has NOT paid his dues. He fled from the United States so he WOULDN’T have to pay his dues, and he still hasn’t fucking paid for anything. Woody Allen just hates seeing one of his pedo brothers in trouble.

  20. onyx says:

where is the petition to send them both to get castrated? I’ll gladly sign that.

  21. Lenore says:

    “Woody Allen defends Roman Polanski”…

    …well, he would, wouldn’t he?

    [/mandyricedavies]

  22. ming says:

    @YeaRight!

You are so right on that point. He has NOT ‘paid’ for his crime. Instead he’s been living it up as a VIP.

With all the support for pedophiles from Hollyweird, it makes you think about how many pedophiles there could be operating in show business.

Just think about how many child actors have psychological damage later on. Maybe there’s a reason linked to Hollyweird pedophilia!

  23. Pooky says:

Woody Allen started an affair with Soon-Yi when she was 21, not 13, and they were never biologically or legally related. Creepy yes, but consenting adults nonetheless. He’s probably not the kind of guy you’d want fighting your corner if you’re RP though!

  24. Leticia says:

I agree with the previous posters. And I have made note of the signers of the petition, and I will avoid their movies in the future.

By the way, Natalie Portman signed the original petition and she annoys me for many reasons, including that she has said that she knows what it is like to be black and suffer prejudice, but she was born an only child to a doctor and has led a sheltered, privileged life, and has an ivy league education. This is not consistent with the typical black experience and I wish she would stop yapping about it.

  25. oxa says:

Who are these supporters who signed this petition, we have a right to know so we can choose to not support their work.

  26. escapee says:

Would any of these celebrities sign a petition for an average non-celebrity pedophile who skipped out on their sentencing? What if they were embarrassed because of publicity from when they were featured on America’s Most Wanted and said they were sorry for physically and emotionally scarring a child?

Also, I am SO sick of people saying he is an artist as though that excuses what he did. Like he just thinks differently than ordinary people and what he did what a thing of beauty to him. Yeah – how beautiful would it be if he did it to one of their daughters?

  27. ViktoryGin says:

    @ Leticia

Interesting. And f*cking hypocritical. Natalie Portman has gone on record in the past stating that she was completely against the sexualization of child actors in film. So, she decides to support some dude that probably would have tried to f*ck her had he gotten the chance to direct her in Leon rather than Luc Besson? Okay.

Quote (IMDB): “I don’t think that there needs to be a movie out there where a child has sex with an adult.”

But it’s okay as long as the camera isn’t rolling, Natalie?

  28. ViktoryGin says:

    Another note and I’m off:

Honestly, I’ve not really paid much attention to this story until very recently, but it gravely disappoints me that there are so many of my favorite actors and auteurs who are going to bat for this man. I know that he’s a friend and colleague and I’m sure they justify his actions in their more-enlightened-than-thou artist bullshit, but they should have kept their names off that list. Tilda Swinton, Pedro Almodovar, Guillermo del Toro, Monica Bellucci. Say it ain’t so.

  29. weslyn says:

he would be defended by Woody Allen..

  30. Kris says:

Says the man who married his wives adopted daughter!
And no he hasn’t paid for it! He continued making movies, continued his life just outside of the states. If he had paid for it, he’d be in JAIL rotting away being raped up the bum by fellow cellmates. Cause that’s paying for RAPING A CHILD!!!

  31. Shona says:

This story is very disconcerting. How can ANYONE just let go the fact that he did what he did to a 13 year old CHILD! I don’t care who the he$$ it is. Genius or not. Hollywood or not. This crime is just something you don’t just pay off like a bill and be forgiven. Polanski took away part of that girl’s spirit when he did what he did. And no amount of time in jail or house arrest will bring that back….or how many great movies he makes.

  32. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

I don’t usually read through posts on this topic, you know? Someone on the planet has to think, I’m not touching this. Well, we won’t be hearing that from this dessicated pair

Woody Allen as an unofficial character witness? If Woody Allen is supposed to be such a genius, how did he expect this to turn out? Ugh, did he have a stroke or something?

Note to Mira: We’ve Born Yesterday with the lovely June Holiday. You effectively had a poochie roca experience there when you ripped it off and made it terrible, didn’t you?

These Hollywood maniacs must sordid, sordid pasts to defend something so vulgar, violent and cruel. Do you really think that a person would think to himself, ‘Well, yes, Caravaggio was a murderer, but it’s not like he killed anyone important. Artists occupy a different headspace, so we must fall back in awe because you can put fetters on a genius. And he was so traumatized by the hordes of people hunting him down and placing a bounty on his head because of some misguided bourgeois notion of ‘justice’. The worst part is that he isn’t allowed to heal because they were the ones who put in jail in the first case due to all of violent crimes of which he was entirely guilty. We should be so glad as to be stabbed to death by him. He would gather some of the blood in a cup and use it to paint his pain. A triumph! There but by the grace of God go we…straight into the femoral artery. And something bad happened to him that one time–crown him, he wins at art!

And since these old dessicated husks are Geniuses! it’ll be handy to keep them in your back pocket once Oscar season approaches.

Feh. Gary Glitter is not a role model. Fuckwits.

  33. Bee says:

Why should anyone be surprised? This is coming from a man who married his “daughter.”

  34. dizzybenny says:

I’m waiting now on René Angelil (Celine Dion’s husband)to come out next and support Polansky. That would be another shocker! 🙂

  35. Circe says:

    Uh.

    Ouch.

    THAT’S NOT HELPING.

  36. abbizmal says:

Agreed, I want to see this list and who signed that petition. This is pretty funny, though, one pervert defending another. And we all know Woody Allen was screwing his step-daughter well before marrying her.

  37. Kim says:

When a pedophile is defedning you its time to look for new supporters.

  38. Kim says:

Of course Woody thinks Roman did nothing wrong. This is a man who lusted after his 5 year old daughter for goodness sake!!!! They are both sickos!

  39. Kim says:

WOODY ALLEN IS A PEDOPHILE WHO SHOULD BE LOCKED AWAY FOR LIFE!

  40. holly says:

I am a huge fan of Woody Allen’s (if not Woody Allen the person), but this defense really isn’t helping anyone. Polanski committed one of the most awful crimes that you can do, and Woody defending him doesn’t do anything except make people wonder about him. And quite frankly, there’s already enough creepy stuff out there about him; he doesn’t need to bring it on himself.

  41. snowball says:

The format of this gave me a migraine, but this is as up-to-date as I’ve seen a list of the signatures of the petition.

    http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/bighollywood/2009/09/29/naming-names-the-free-roman-polanski-petition/

There are definitely some others that I know are on there but aren’t listed: Ethan Coen, Penelope Cruz, Natalie Portman, Bernardo Bertolucci, Isabel Adjani, Vangelis, Syliva Kristel, Brett Ratner.

Harvey Weinstein said he wants to start a U.S.-based petition to support the European one (don’t know if that’s old news or not, I don’t keep up with the pedo news) ;/

Ugh. Woody Allen. There’s nothing new that hasn’t been said up above me.

  42. danielle says:

Huh. At least Allen said Polansky did something wrong. Many of those celebs made Polansky sound like a victim. Idiots.

  43. Chico says:

I hate being judgmental. Both directors have made films that I’ve really liked (Annie Hall, Chinatown, etc). Yet they are both disgusting pervs. It’s sad–their acts taint their films. I think part of the reason Hollywood defendeds them is that they know them personally and thought, “he’s not a bad guy.” It’s very hard to mesh the rather benign-looking old man with the nasty child-raping pervert. In any case, I think Polanski should do his time. You can’t rape a child and then hope it’s forgiven years later. And, I know the reason Allen is defending him is because he supposedly started the affair with Soon-yi when she was not quite 18 (according to court testimony). So, Allen could’ve been Polanski, if Soon-Yi decided to press charges, instead of marrying him. Gross.

  44. gg says:

And “paid for it”?? No, he admitted he was a pedo and then escaped, continuing to work and flout international laws, he never paid for anything.

  45. Katija says:

Polanski to Allen: Not helping, bro!!!

  46. Ron says:

It’s always helpful to have a near- pedolfile-stepdaughter-fu*ker step up and give his support. His deparavity knows no apparent bounds.

  47. Statler says:

Mm, quelle surprise. Wonder if Morgan Freeman will weigh in next.

  48. Fluffy Kitten Tail says:

  49. Ruffian9 says:

Actually, he hasn’t paid for it…

  50. Cruisin Through says:

Well what do you expect someone who married his daughter to say?

  51. westcoaster says:

That sound you hear is Roman Polanski’s defense lawyer hitting the floor

  52. Jacqueline says:

Its beyond obvious these too are pedophiles

  53. James says:

Woody, you don’t bring much credibility to the whole defence for Mr Polanski.

  54. Mingo says:

Gotta wonder who’s giving Woody this horrible advice to support this pedophile.

  55. Aussie Mama says:

dirty, filthy, sick, disgusting, repulsive, perverted, twisted kiddy fiddlers, that should have their hands n knobs cut off and eyes removed!

  56. crash2GO2 says:

I think there is far too much bantering about of the term ‘pedophile’ which does not apply to either one of these fuckwits. They certainly deserve to be skewered, but to label them as pedophiles is incorrect.

  57. Dawn says:

The both of them are sick-o’s. To all of the “stars” that signed that petition, give me a break! What is wrong with you people? He drugged and abused a 13 year-old girl. A child.

Woody Allen? STFU! You married your step-daugther! Just sick.

  58. Aussie Mama says:

    Dawn.
He not only drugged and raped a child, he also anally raped her! All in Jack Nicholsons home, whilst Jack was home, you think he didn’t know, didn’t watch, wasn’t involved?
Woody: Mia found repulsive naked pic’s Woody had taken of Soon Yi when she was still a child, he married her, but…
The fact remains, Hollywood is run by pedo’s, why do you really think all the child stars go off the rails, drugs, booze etc? Parents like Dina and Britt’s ma, turn a blind eye, the agents and star makers abuse these kids from day 1. These kids go through a lot, to get where they are and then have to live with the memories down the track. eg; Disney is a child abuse factory. Look at the list of tortured child stars, the 2 coreys, dana plato, gary coleman, todd bridges, ed furlong, the olsens, heath ledger, britt, linds, paris, casey johnson, it is almost all of them people, wake the hell up!

  59. Notions says:

Disgusting men. Everyone who supports them is culpable in their sins against children.

I was so happy to hear that Michael Douglas did not sign the petition. He gets lots of points for that.

I have a stepson who is nine now and was six when I came into his life. I just cannot imagine how Woody Allen could do that. It is just as incestuous as if she were his flesh and blood daughter.

At the time, it was rumored that Soon Yi had some retardation or a touch of Downs. I have to admit, I can kind of see it in her face, which makes this crime – yes crime – all the more disgusting.

  60. For Sooth? says:

Woody is “Old, and in the way”.

  61. Judy says:

People “forget” about Michael Jackson’s perversions also.

  62. Bopa says:

When did he pay for it. Living in France by his own choice is hardly a punishment. This coming from the man who shacked up with his adopted daughter. I don’t expect him to have a moral compass.

  63. Mark says:

Let them sign their petition, then i get a list of scumbags whose films to avoid.
Just shocked at some of the names on the list, they are all just sheep.

  64. marie says:

Big punishment! a frenchman being forced to live in France? This issue really shows how disgusting hollywood culture really is and how we give too much power to a trashy subculture of perverted animals. Anyone who could condone drugging and raping a child, sodomizing her while she screams no and then telling her to keep it quiet is an animal.

Or Whoopi Goldberg who took the time in her show to clarify that it wasn’t “rape” rape?

I say boycott until he’s behind bars.

  65. marie says:

Or maybe that list should be given to every prison in the country and all the child rapists can write them asking them to free them too. I’d love to see what they would say then.

  66. tx says:

“If I had killed somebody, it wouldn’t have had so much appeal to the press, you see? But… f—ing, you see, and the young girls. Judges want to f— young girls. Juries want to f— young girls. Everyone wants to f— young girls!” — Roman Polanski, 1979

  67. melvin polatnick says:

Polanski, Woody Allen, Al Goldstein, Hugh Hefner and many others had one thing in common, they were all cynics who thumbed their noses at conventional lifestyles and got away with it. The most beautiful women of the world begged to share their bedrooms for even a moment. Their hedonistic lifestyle provoked jealousy in those that follow the rules and are forced to make love to a loser. Now its payback time and the family man is getting his revenge. They are overjoyed that Polanski got caught either fondling or raping a 13 year old sleepover. Most want him tarred and feathered, others wish to trade places and make love to the women in his Swiss villa.
