Glee creator defends Lea Michele against diva criticism

A couple of weeks ago, we heard that Lea Michelle, Rachel Berry on the Fox hit Glee, got annoyed at a photographer who didn’t know who she was at the Time 100 Gala. As far as diva moments go, it was a minor one, with Lea giving two fake names to the photographer, Sarah Palin and Taylor Swift. Lea then apologized a few days later via Twitter, well after the news had spread, writing that she “made a silly joke that didn’t go over, so sorry.” A lot of people don’t like Lea because she gives off a smug vibe, but I think she’s doing ok and handling her newfound fame relatively well. She had a slip up and got snotty, which happens to the best of us. If we hear that she has more diva moments then we’ll have to assume she’s like that all the time and wasn’t just having a bad day.

Anyway Glee creator Ryan Murphy spoke with People Magazine at an event and had nothing but praise for Lea’s attitude and professionalism. He said she’s always on time and friendly to co-workers. It strikes me that this guy tells it like it is, although he may be praising Lea partially because she’s one of the leads on the show and he can’t afford to lose her. Murphy also claimed that he told Lea that people would try and bring her down once her star was rising:

“[The rumors are] not accurate and not true at all,” Murphy told PEOPLE at the 69th Annual Peabody Awards in New York City on Monday, where the hit musical was honored for its achievement in diversity and content. “Lea is the sweetest, most professional girl. She’s incredibly kind and she’s always on time and she’s always with her cast hanging out. They’re all close.”

As for how to combat the reports — including stories about tension between Michele and her costars — Murphy says he’s offered her advice on how to ignore the gossip.

“I told Lea this would happen to her in July of last year. Just wait, people will start to write untruths,” says Murphy. “I told her, ‘Keep your chin up and it just happens. It’s happened to me and it’s happened to everyone. So don’t pay attention to it.’ But it’s definitely not true. Lea is great.”

[From People]

Maybe Lea is suffering because she’s only associated with one character and that character is a taskmaster with a type-A bitchy personality. It doesn’t help that she shows up at countless events looking like she’s gracing us with her presence, though. She should tone it down and work on cultivating a more approachable image.

The Glee four city concert tour is underway, and at $75 and up a ticket the show is being criticized for low production value and a bare bones set. Still, it consists of the younger stars performing hits from the show live, which is a real thrill for fans.

Tomorrow night’s episode of the show will feature a cameo by Neil Patrick Harris as a school board member trying to take down Glee director Will Schuester. Harris spoke to OK! Magazine about the show and said that he was surprised how hard they worked, explaining “I thought it would be much more hilarious on set, but everyone is so exhausted and overworked there.” I’m excited to see Harris on Glee! The show is picking up steam again after kind of faltering with too many big production numbers on the Madonna episode, in my opinion. They need to be careful to strike a balance between giving us the characters and plot twists we love and not going overboard with the musical numbers.

    love her

  2. Rachel says:

Everyone was quick to jump on the bandwagon and bash Lea but almost no one has reported that the photographer, Patrick McMullan, went on Twitter and said that Lea had no reason to apologize. If he doesn’t have a problem with Lea, I don’t see why anyone else should.

Maybe she has a natural “bitch face.” Not that she necessarily feels that way, but that facial expression may be something she’s comfortable making. She never looks confident and happy, so I’m thinking she’s more insecure than just the devil in a peach dress. (By the way, that dress is awful).
Or….she could be a raging hateful brat. I’m just saying, pictures aren’t the best way to judge.

  4. Strawberry says:

I think she was probably just drunk and mouthing off at the Time gala, kinda stupid at a high-profile event, but it happens to the best of ’em… she like Gabby Sidibe, is still learning how to be a celeb.

  5. EB says:

Her reputation preceeds her. She has terrible fashion sense – she dresses like a fugitive from a mall fashion show! And given that people are making statements that she’s not a “diva”, I can’t think of more ample proof that she is. Put it this way, if you are nice, people don’t ever need to mention it. Except to say you’re a nice person. This type of criticism doesn’t happen in a vacuum.

  6. Snarf says:

    Super bitch diva. Trust.

  7. flutters says:

Eh, Patrick McMullan overreacted. I’m sure Lea Michele isn’t perfect either. There’s bound to be backlash against a show that gets so hot so fast and I’m not surprised it’s being focused on the female lead. That’s the way the industry works. If it wasn’t diva it’d be something else with Lea and only some of it would be true.

Neil Patrick Harris talking about how exhausted and overworked the cast is – now that’s the most telling part of the whole blog. Nice way of putting it all together. The new pictures of Lea are not. good. She looks better when they’re not trying so hard. Fresh faced Lea is more attractive.

  8. Persistent Cat says:

I loved the Madonna episode because of the over-the-top numbers. I woke up happy today because it’s a Glee night.

She does tend to dress bad and her make-up is too much but whatever, I don’t have to be seen in public with her.

  9. lucy2 says:

I think it was a lame joke, and agree that if the photographer wasn’t bothered by it, I think it got blown out of proportion.
Like with Gabby, if diva stories persist, then I’ll believe it. Lea is really talented and great on the show, and as long as she’s not being mean to coworkers, making demands, or rude to fans, that’s enough for me.

I am still completely in love with the green dress she wore to the SAG awards, but haven’t cared for much since. I think the bangs are too much on her too.

I cannot wait for NPH!!! I love him, and I think he’ll be great on Glee.

  10. e says:

She has a terrible reputation from Broadway. I also wonder how well she will do once Glee is over.

  11. Huma says:

Oh, my GOD, her styling in the banner pic is so HIDEOUS. Normally I love the way she dresses – especially when she pulls out the old school Hollywood glamour on the big, important red carpets. She gets it right – sexy and age-appropriate but without looking too sex-pot-ish to make us think about how she’s totally overcompensating for playing a virginal teen on TV but OH MY GOD SHE LOOKS HORRIBLE HERE.

  12. Huma says:

Also, ugh, I hate how overworked those fake sexy teenagers are. 🙁 Seriously, I’m not being snotty. Think about it. Not only do they have to *act* in an actual TV show with dialogue and plot and all that, but they have to rehearse singing, actually record the songs, and rehearse all the dancing for when they film that. It’s like 3 huge endeavors packed into ONE creative product! And plus, they’re always doing TV appearances (which, yeah, all TV actors do, really), AND they’ve got this huge tour.

    🙁

    Poor things.

  13. Deens says:

Diva discussion aside, does anything else think the last few episodes of Glee have been a bit different than earlier ones? The series started off so irreverant and edgy, but lately it’s veering towards the melodramatic and not in a good way.

They’re steering the focus away from the actual club! And the alcoholic blonde character from the roller skating rink apisode was just a rip-off of Karen from Will & Grace. Did they really need to waste 3 minutes of the episode showing her and Mr. Schuster singing in bed?? GAH! Bring the old show back!

  14. Iggles says:

They need to focus more on the STORY LINES instead of focusing on how they can arrange the story for MUSICAL NUMBERS.

It’s getting too out of hand. Might as well have a karaoke show — all this singing and the characters are getting lost.

I love RENT. But it works because the music is an expression of the what the characters are going through. Musicals don’t work when they include songs for the sake of performing a cool song..

  15. Zelda says:

My “someone could use a slap” radar is never wrong….

  16. lucy2 says:

I totally agree that the focus of the show has shifted – the Madonna episode was a clear example of that. They used to have story lines, and then fit the music to that, but now it’s all about trying to fill in an episode’s story around certain songs. The show creator’s previous shows have sort of fallen apart after a good first season, so I’m hoping that won’t happen to Glee, because I do like it.
Deens, I have to disagree – I adore Kristin Chenoweth (the alcoholic blond at the roller rink) and would be happy of an entire show of her just standing there singing! I will say I don’t think they incorporated her story in very well this time, it was more like they got the opportunity for her to be on the show again and just made something up on the fly for her. Her talent deserves more, hopefully she will be back and they’ll do better by her.

  17. Melissa says:

Re: Glee – I personally would like to hear more pop songs and less numbers from musicals.

  18. Jeri says:

At least Lea Michelle is talented which is more than you can say for most of the “why are they famous” girls from reality shows & Lindsay & Paris, etc that just party & pose.

  19. Mentok the Mind Taker says:

    @Zelda —

    I’ll do it!

  20. Zelda says:

Actually, I just started downloading glee this weekend (I live abroad) and everytime this one sings (WAY too often), I zip through it. It’s her obnoxious face. And those are the scenes where we are actually supposed to LIKE her…

  21. Mettel says:

on the third pic she looks like a younger version of Paula Abdul

  22. LBees says:

    … Pass.

    She seems smug and irritating.

  23. Frank says:

Man some people are so judgmental.

Whatever happened to if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything.

She is a pretty girl with A LOT of talent.

She is still young and probably is a bit of a Broadway diva but just becasue a WOMAN is driven and goes for what she wants doesn’t make her a bad person.

The comments on web sites are more bitchy than anything anysof these celebrities have probably ever done.

Her rep on Broadway were mostly by people who didn’t get a autograph or who didn’t like that she wasn’t very talkative.

She looks like she has a bitch face what a lame comment. She had dozens of pictures taken and they put up ones of her that aren’t flattering to match the story.

If it was a happy story she would be all smiles.
