Oprah wants to bring Judge Judy down for beating her in the ratings

Kaiser and I were just complaining to each other about how it’s kind of a dull tabloid week. Nothing of great interest seems to be happening and there’s a predominance of stories about celebrity bikini bodies and ill-advised diets. The Enquirer is running with another Oprah cover, which must be good sellers for them despite how boring they seem to the rest of us. They claim that Oprah and Gayle got in a “public screaming match” in which the words “I hate you!” were uttered. It’s just about an argument they had over some issue at a business meeting. Gayle supposedly said “I hate you when you act like this,” which is different than just saying “I hate you” and storming out.

According to the Enquirer they’re having some issues where Gayle is finally asserting herself over input into Oprah’s new cable network and isn’t having it when Oprah is trying to pull rank and shut her down. They talked it out, though, and I’m sure they kissed and made up afterwards.

The real dirt in the Oprah article is an inset story which claims that Oprah absolutely can’t stand it that Judge Judy sometimes beats her in the ratings and is vowing to crush her. She’s made it a point to ensure that Judy is never mentioned on her show or in any of her publications as she sees her as a huge rival. Plus Oprah thinks Judy is trashy for covering such low brow material with the guests in her courtroom. That’s so ripe coming from a woman who interviews pedophiles and the Octomom.

Here’s part of the Enquirer’s story:

Oprah Winfrey has vowed to burn her top TV rival “Judge Judy” before quitting her talk show, and banned her feisty ratings foe from all things Oprah, insiders say.

“The ‘Judge Judy’ show has not only tied with Oprah’s show in the ratings, it’s actually beating ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ a few times, and Oprah is furious!” an insider divulged.

“Now Oprah has made it clear that she doesn’t want Judy mentioned in her magazine, on her TV show or on her cable shows – anywhere, any time, any way. Judy is banned from Oprahland!”

The two TV powerhouses have been at odds since Judge Judy Sheindlin, who’d been a Manhattan family court judge for 14 years, debuted as “Judge Judy” in 1996, the source said.

“Oprah used to say ‘Judge Judy’ was just trashy people yelling at each other about their sordid lives,” the insider said.

“Over the years, Oprah tried to ignore the show, hoping it would go away. Instead, Judy is threatening to nudge Oprah out of her spot at the top of the daytime ratings.”

Feeling threatened, Oprah has shaken up her staff, said the source.

“Oprah wants her show to end in a blaze of glory. She’s made it clear that heads will roll if the ratings don’t climb…

“She doesn’t want cheap gimmicks and she’s rejected ideas like big giveaways. Oprah wants solid ‘idea’ shows with big guest stars…

“Just is well aware of Oprah’s anger, and she’s actually laughing about it… Judy has been telling her friends ‘Oprah started the fight, and I’ll finish it.'”

[From The National Enquirer, print edition, June 7, 2010]

I kind of ignore Judge Judy and I had no idea that her show had been on so long or that she makes a whopping $33 million a year. The thing that makes me believe that The Enquirer has a very solid insider source is their insistence that Oprah isn’t relying on “gimmicks” for ratings. That is absolutely not true, but sounds just like something one of her staff members would say. I’m sure she’s presenting it that way to her people, and maybe the almighty Oprah believes that her show isn’t trashy, but it really is. The Oprah show is full of tabloid material. I had to switch off a recent episode about child brides of some cult leader it was so disturbing. Plus she always hypes her celebrity guests and was recently asking the Pinkett-Smiths about their sex life, which is a favorite topic of Jada’s anyway. Oprah just can’t stand competition. I bet Oprah’s show will really take a beating when she moves it to her OWN network anyway. Oprah can’t OWN everything. Team Judy!

    Team Judy.

I hate when Oprah haves celebrities in her show , she kisses to much ass. “Julia Roberts is the most beautiful women in the planet” really? “You are the best mom in the world” ask her husband kids what they think about her.

  2. YT says:

I caught parts of Oprah’s shows years ago. I usually caught the tabloid-type shows with too much information for daytime TV. Judge Judy has more class and intelligence than Oprah. At least Oprah has her money.

  3. Snarf says:

Hmmm. An egotistical billionaire that owns a media empire, or a crusty, vaguely right-wing, trailerpark trash hating judge?

    It’s a tie.

  4. Tess says:

It’s time for her to waddle her hypocritical ass off center stage.

It’s mind blowing to consider the hours and hours of pure dreck she’s put out there on the air and the negative effect it has on our culture, particularly on young girls.

  5. snowball says:

    They’re both still on?

I’m still more interested in that Daniel Craig story. I WANT PICTURES!

  6. Tess says:

    Snarf,
I’ve got to defend the Judge against any hint that she’s even vaguely rightwing. She was an outspoken supporter of Obama.

  7. heb says:

    Team Judy!!

  8. gracie says:

Oprah better watch out. Judge Judy does not play.

  9. Cruisin Through says:

I don’t think it’s true. Just a slow tabloid week.

  10. Chris says:

I like what Kathy Griffith (I think – it might have been anothter comedian) said about Judge Judy – ‘she is porn for adults’. I agree – such a guilty pleasure, but I love watching her, at 4pm by the way, right when Oprah is on.

  11. Bopa says:

I’ll admit I watch Judge Judy over Oprah. They come on at the same time in my city. I can’t stand how Oprah gushes over her celeb guests especially Julia Roberts and Leno. I remember listening to a radio add where she said “It’s girlfriend chat time..me and Julia Roberts”. I doubt they’re really friends. Leno and Letterman both did Oprah jokes for years but somehow she held a grudge with Letterman but kisses Leno’s ass. Also how she went so hard against the hip hop community but now she’s on team Jay Z but still doesn’t have other hip hop artists on the show. I don’t have a problem with her having an issue with the subject matter in a lot of rap songs but there are rappers who do positive songs who could benefit from being on her show. Instead she focuses on Jay Z who still raps about selling drugs.

  12. I know this is probably all kinds of effed up, but I wish Judge Judy (or JJ as my dad calls her) was my meemaw.

  13. jc126 says:

I used to think the Judge Judy show was just crap, but after I started working the night shift and caught JJ a few times after I got up, I got to really enjoy her. She’s entertaining, and she really does give a lot of good life advice about avoiding lending money to friends/family, getting involved with deadbeats. It’s quite a vivid lesson, and she’s funny.
Judge Milian on People’s Court is nicer, but still as good at making points about avoiding bad situations.

  14. Marjalane says:

Oprah’s been a joke for years! Somewhere along the way she lost all credibilty with me, and now I just find her hypocritically offensive. I don’t know why anyone would enjoy all the tongue baths she gives celebrities, (usually for no damn reason) and her whole jump onto the political bandwagon helped to saddle America with the worst President we’ll ever see. Thanks for nothing, “O”.

  15. denise says:

Love Judge Judy, but I would hate to be in her courtroom. She has a keen sense of sniffing out bullshit. Team Judy!

  16. Lady D says:

    Team Judy, hands down.

  17. Lady D says:

Never seen Oprah, caught 6 or 8 Judge Judy shows. Team Judy, hands down.

  18. Mairead says:

I adore Judge Judy, except I find her a bit too harsh on mental illness. I’d rather that though than the patronising approach taken on Oprah the odd time I’ve watched it.

Yeah, anyway – Team Judy!!! 8)

  19. kia says:

I HATE Oprah. All that big fat b*tch does is talk about herself. Why even have anyone else on the show if all you do is interrupt them to breathlessly share some boring anecdote about how UPSET you were when your private jet was 10 seconds late and you *gasp* HAD TO WAIT LIKE A COMMON PEASANT! I don’t get how anyone can stand “Pope-rah” she acts like her sh*t doesn’t stink, like she’s the Queen of England, how do all the housefraus relate to someone like that? “ME ME MEEE!!!” is all that ever comes out of her mouth, she’s boring and a one-trick pony that should have been canceled a looong time ago.

Now, Judge Judy is at least funny and doesn’t act like somebody just shat on her plate. I enjoy her bitchiness and at least she’s doing something other than blabbering on about HERSELF. So Team Judy all the way! Oprah can go F herself…or get her lover Gayle to do it for her. Ew, excuse me, I think I have to go vomit uncontrollably for hours at the idea….*dies*

  20. Prissa says:

I love Judge Judy. She is undeniably rude and does not mince words, but she makes A LOT of sense.

  21. jover says:

Team Judy – celebrity ass kissing is just plain worn out. 11 I agree there’s a lot of bad rap out there but there is some good stuff Kid Cuddi does some stuff with a string quartet and Ratatat. I’ll bet he won’t be on the big O.

  22. Ben says:

Um… implying that covering paedophiles is ‘low brow’ is all sorts of strange. So what… classier people just ignore the existence of that (admittedly horrible) sort of thing? Like the ugly things in this world are only for the ‘low brow’ people to acknowledge and discuss?

  23. Kim says:

TEAM OPRAH. Oprahs was smart to end her show this year because her popularity has faded and people are kind of over her show. BUT the judge Judy show to me is painful! Her fake dramatic act of belittling & yelling at the people in the courtroom is so stupid. Its so fake & is the same EXACT show everyday just diff cases/people. Real judges loathe judge Judy for making their profession look like a circus act.

  24. Jeri says:

Love Judge Judy – she cuts right thu the BS.

  25. doublestandard says:

Amean CB. Oprah is so full of herself and her show is trashy and often has the most lowlife disturbing stuff on it. Never watch it.

  26. california angel says:

They are both making $ exploiting people so I really don’t see the difference.

  27. JD says:

    Team Judy !

  28. e says:

Hey Kia, still got those hormones kickin I see. 🙂

  29. Cindy says:

Team Judge Judy. I’ll watch judge judy over phony celebrity ass kissing Oprah any day.

  30. Aussie Mama says:

Judge Judy is just trashy people???
Oprah has made a career of that too and with a follow up, Dr Phil. Human effluent trash shows the lot of em. Would rather listen to music whilst cleaning my house. Total waste of time.

  31. Peg says:

Here’s how to beat Judge Judy in the ratings: Have her on Oprah as a guest. Duh!

  32. kia says:

    e-

Unfortunately for us all, yes! So don’t be shocked to see my mean comments for about 3 more months LOL!!

  33. mia says:

    Team Judge Judy!

Judge Judy is a thousand times more “real’ than Oprah any day of the week. Miss Judy puts it out there and says what everyone is really thinking anyway!!

  34. Jazz says:

Lindsay Lohan needs to go before Judge Judy! That will sort her ass out pronto!

  35. Sam says:

Judge Judy is more relateable than Oprah as there are real everyday situations on that show; Judge Judy dispenses great advice too! Team JJ!

  36. Slymm27 says:

Oprah thinks she has the answer to the worlds problem. I don’t believe in luck, i do this, i think that, men are this, marriage is that. Silly woman.

  37. Danny says:

Cage match. JJ would kick Opa’s ass.

  38. Annie says:

At least Oprah is kind and compassionate, Judy Judy is the meanest judge on the Internet.
