Emo kids attacked in Mexico and Chile

jared0325_1.jpg

Emo kids the world over are apparently struggling in their fight to be accepted. And hugged. Emo kids – for those of you not in the know – are the tight-black jean and heavy eyeliner wearing pseudo-depressed kids that listen to equally depressing music and take sad pictures of themselves to post on their MySpace pages. Emo is slang for emotional. There’s a lot more to it than that (apparently) but there’s a quick run-down of the subculture for you. More and more often Emo kids have been the target of bullies in schools – picked on for their sensitive natures. Apparently the desire to beat up kids that cry too easily is universal, as Emo kids in Mexico and Chile are getting the crap beaten out of them.

A wave of violence against emo kids is spreading across Mexico, with the music fans being attacked by mobs in the street, and further threats of large-scale attacks in Tijuana during the forthcoming Feria de San Marcos, the annual national fair. The attacks are reportedly coming from metal, punk and rockabilly music fans who dislike the emo look and attitude, according to LA Weekly’s Daniel Hernandez.

The violent attacks are partly being blamed on an on-air rant by ‘Televisa’ TV personality Kristoff who recently called emo ‘f*#&ing bullshit’. Kristoff subsequently called for an end to the violence but it is thought he make take the fall if the government blames Televisa for the trouble. On March 7 around 800 young people in the city of Querataro amassed against emos in the city resulting in many violent attacks, and a week later a similar incident occurred in Mexico City. Emos in both cities responded to the attacks by marching peacefully through the center of the cities.

Emo kids in Chile are also being beaten up for the same reason. I’m a big fan of the peaceful protest, but in most cases, if bullies want beat you up, they’re going to beat you up. Believe me, ignoring them because your mom told you that’s the best route rarely works. Though it might lesson the bullying a bit, who knows. I know they’re dorks – and way too into looking deep and sad when they’re the same as everyone else – but I feel badly for the emo kids. Most of them are just trying out different personas to see what works for them. Give them a year and they’ll be back to wearing khakis. Okay maybe not, but they probably will be less annoying. Maybe. Hopefully. Seriously though, kids are so into their music that they have to beat up other kids for being into a difference scene? That’s ridiculous. Back in my day, we had worthy feuds. East Coast versus West Coast, now that was music to fight about. Emo versus punk? Ridiculous.

Images of “emo” “musician” (yes they both deserve quotes) Jared Leto thanks to Websters is My Bitch.

I wish my lawn was emo so it would cut itself.

Just kidding! But that is one of my favorite emo-isms.

Kids will bully each other & always pick on the ones who are (or make themselves) different. It really sucks but I don’t know of a way to make it stop

  2. Allie says:

This sounds like it’s going wayyy beyond just bullying. Violence like that is pretty disturbing. While “emo” kids might be annoying, it doesn’t justify kicking their asses. People are such jerks these days.

    (Semi-off topic)

    Jared, FFS!
Grow up, cut your hair, wipe that smear off and go back to proper acting (see: “Requiem For a Dream”).

    Sincerely,
disgruntled 23 year old former fangirl

This isn’t new or surprising. It’s been going on for the last 100 years or so, since the first of the ‘swing kids’ got their ass kicked in the 20’s, and will most likely go on until after we’re all dust.

Anyone that thinks this is new needs to hop into their Way Back machine and revisit their childhood, which for me would involve a bunch of LA punks beating the hell out of the kids with Flock of Seagulls haircuts.

Seriously, before it was Emo that was targeted it was Goth, and next year it will be something else. They’re all pretty damn annoying. I mean, when your entire goal is to be a ‘unique individual’ and ‘non-conformist’, it might be a good idea if you didn’t all look, act, and speak the same.

Bodhi, you get my award for the best emo-ism yet! That’s hysterical!!

  7. Tabby says:

In the UK a 15 and 16 y.o. just got charged with murder for killing Sophie Lancaster just because she was a ‘goth’ or ‘mosher’. Quite frankly, some people need to just wake the eff up and stop thinking it is in some way acceptable to target people just cos they dress a little differently.

  8. headache says:

Emo is crap. Their music is shit and their “depression” is such a put upon. At least the flock of seagull, goth, and hair band kids were more genuine.

However being a poser douche with an unhealthy attachment to rain, angst and crappy ass music doesn’t mean you deserve to have your ass kicked.

  9. C says:

I`m very upset about this. I live in Mexico and this is just gross, those people are so intolerant, they demand respect, but as soon as they see something they don`t like they feel they have to do something about it. Most of these kids (the violent ones who attacked emos) are kids too, no more than 18 years old, is not acceptable anyway, but I can see they`re more confused and more ignorant than the people they`re attacking (btw I don`t think emos are neither of those, but those bullies do) Now there`s a huge campaign on radio, newspapers and tv about different ways of expression, after what happened, no one wants to see kids murdered in schools just because they drees different. Hopefully it won`t ever happen again.

  10. Gracie says:

Unfortunately, kids have been bullied due to their looks and mannerisms for as long as I can remember, esp boys.

This has been going on since the 70s, so its not an emo thing, it’s a pack-weakness mentality.

  11. Kevin says:

oooohhhh! I always thought they were trying to be emus. makes about as much sense. Well if anything, getting your asses kicked en mass should be depressing enough. Now go home, wipe off the eyeliner and take off your girl jeans and cut on yourself or cry yourself to sleep. That is all thank you.

  12. journey says:

always wondered why jared leto favored the dolly parton/tammy fae/ru paul school of make-up.

and it’s no wonder they get depressed and cut themselves. did you know that mascara and liner has bat guano in it? obviously the bat shit in their cosmetics turns them bat shit crazy.

(learned that bit of info on guano on a cavern tour last weekend. it’s what makes the mascara stay on through rain and sleet and hail. don’t bother looking for it in the list of ingredients, they call it something else on the label)

  13. Kattybitch says:

As a death-rocker I can relate to the jeers and stupidity that gets handed to you on a daily bases- but haven’t the crap beat out of you for the way you look? That’s just intolerant bullshit. If they were targeting the black culture people would be calling bullshit to it, but because the kids dress a little ‘off’ they get even more jeers because they shouldn’t dress in a way to become a target?
I’m not a fan of emo, it’s the goth/punk-lite of subcultures but damn, that’s just not cool.

  14. Mairead says:

Prfacing this with the fact that I’m not condoning the actions at all, I agree with Scott F – this type of thing has been going on for generations … Teddy Boys, Mods vs Rockers. The only “yoof” movements which didn’t escalate into all out war was in the 90s between the grungers and the ravers. Must have been more pacifying drugs then 😉

Am I the only one that seems to think that the “emotinal hardcore” sensibility is basically being a The Smiths fan with the wardrobe of a Curehead?

and off topic – Journey.. bat guano? Seriously? The reason I’m incredulous is, well apart from the fact that it sounds like the guide was taking the piss, that they’re protected species in Europe, so unqualified people entering their spaces is illegal.
But that stuff is an absolute bitch to wash off – gum arabic would be a much better alternative. 🙂

  15. coco says:

ok,so emo kids are annoying as fuck, but hey, so are pop-princess types, and noone’s beating those up…
seriously, you have to be disturbed to think music and “scenes” are worth fighting over.

btw, i think “modern myth” by j leto’s band is a pretty ok song.

  16. FF says:

Seems like people never run out of excuses to beat the crap out of each other.

  17. Mairead says:

still off topic – you were right Journey, it’s the guanine in guano, mother of pearl, fish scales etc. that’s used for a pearlescent finish. But it is generally made synthetically which would make sense, because bat dung is a bitch to remove from surfaces – and they do move around so it’s not like it’s a constant sources.

So your guide was doing what I do when dealing with groups, especially with kids, find the nastiest sounding “facts” and sex ’em up like a British Govt Iraq dossier 😉

  18. Tati says:

    ok first of all
    Jared Leto is NOT EMO!!!
and he is an amazing musician!!!
oh and most of those people are not “emo” they are scene
figure out what your talking about before you say it morons!!!

  19. Rianna says:

Tati… google him and then look at wikipedia. it says on there that he is emo.

  20. dancingnancie81 says:

30 Seconds to Mars kicks ass, with a huge black effin’ period!

  21. Foxxy says:

im scared for ma life…and its just hard to pretend everything is okay :roll:seriously ive been attacked twice the first i almost got killed..

  22. Anonymous says:

Okay for one, people may think emo is annoying, but it is a style.Just because you see a kid dressed in sinny jeans, black hoodies, and they have heavy eyeliner on,does not mean they are emo!
People who cut they’re wrist can look like anybody else.So to say that “emos” cut their wrist is completely false.
Kids dress this way because they look towards bands and members as idols or comforters. All these bands are dressing “punk” and “goth” and “emo”,an really all it is is a style they are comfortable with.No matter what that is what it all comes down to.Style.So some kids who dress this way cause they are depressed, that doesnt make them any different then anyone else.
I think this thing is absolutely horrible and completely stupid!!People being beaten up because of how they look.It is as bad as the thing with homosexuality. When you feel comfortable with who you are and how you look,no one should say anything about it!!

  23. Mar says:

What the hell? Kids in Mexico(and in Chile) are stupid. Both the people who are beating emos up and even killing them, and the emos themselves. To me, Emo just looks like goth mixed with punk. Other than the tight skinny jeans and eyeliner, everything else looks the same.

Emo has been a music genre even before the emo style was even known. And I didn’t see any of those bands dress that way.

Personally, if you want to be emo a good place is Japan. I think that the Japanese have a similar dressing style for bands and the hair really reflects it, too. Check out bands like Luna Sea(which mind you, has been out for a very long time) and what not and you’ll see.

But I just think that the emo-bashing is stupid.

People should grow up, too. For those who are cutting themselves and making themselves depressed…dude, that is just stupid! I mean, I support the ’emo look’ I think the hairstyle looks good (just not the tight pants). Like I said, it really reminds me of Japanese hairstyle, which by the way looks really cool.
But I just don’t support the stereo-type(spell check) emos who cut themselves and cry all the time or what not and emos who like bands that are over-rated as being emo like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, 30 Seconds to Mars, and whatever else is out there like that.

Like I said, people just need to STOP. Fucking retards…

  24. jessica _emo princess_ says:

this is so fucking stupid i dont see emo kids getting beaten up i see kids
so wut if they wear different clothes and listen to different music
wut if it was ur kid who was emo how wuld u feel about it then picture them or ur lil sibs out there getting the shit beat out of them this world is so fuking gay instead of fighting war your out there trying to b big and bad by beating up emo’s its stupidity … wut if ppl just decided to start beating up preps cause they wear different clothes and stuff… i dont belive how ignorant some ppl r …. most of these ppl beating up others dont even understand wut emo is all they see is the outside…. its like nazis and jews next theres gonna b camps for emos’ and shit

  25. Jim says:

The whole emo style is ridiculous. The first “emo” bands were Sunny Day Real Estate, Texas is the Reason, Elliott, etc. They didn’t overdo it. And they were real. The new emo music is nothing more than overdramaticized pop. They just don’t have any heart anymore. The dress is just a symptom of trying way too hard. Every genre of music turns to shit directly before or after it goes mainstream, and it’s pathetic that people are beating people up over this.

  26. kalibre says:

He’s not emo, this is just a stage show.

  27. Emo says:

    WhaT’s Up ?!
I am interesting emo news. But not actually
