Kylie Minogue on Lady Gaga: “I think there’s an element of me in her”

kylie1

Over the weekend, I did a post about Kylie Minogue’s appearance on the new issue of Blackbook Magazine. I’ve always considered Kylie to be a cute girl, and it pains me how much work she’s had done to her face. It also pains me that we’re supposed to pretend her face is the product of some Botox that she no longer does. Another thing that bothers me? Kylie thinks she’s way more important than she is. Sure, I’ll give her the gay icon status, and yes, I’ll give her a “dance-music queen” title too. She’s made some good to great dance music, and she’s famous for having a great ass. She’s also a cancer survivor, and I can’t imagine how much she’s struggled over the past years, dealing with cancer treatments and then remission, not knowing if it was going to come back. But she reckons that she and Madonna are on the same field, and that she (Kylie) is one of Lady Gaga’s influences. The full Blackbook interview is here, and here are some highlights:

On her business savvy: “I have big ambitions,” says Minogue, once the most-groped wax figure at Madame Tussauds’ famed London gallery. “But I’m really quiet about it. What’s that saying? ‘Never let people know how much you know.’”

On her early acting career: “Acting was the first thing I did when I left high school,” she says. “I signed up for the dole when I graduated, but I never got a check because I started working on Neighbours. Fame wasn’t the driving force, but I can’t say I didn’t aspire to it at all. I used to daydream as a kid that my neighbor was a record producer and that he would hear me singing.”

On her career, post-cancer: “When I came back after I’d healed, I realized, more than ever, that performing is what I do,” she says. “It’s what I love to do. Strangely, I’m less stressed about getting in front of an audience now, and so the shows have gotten better.”

On her new album: “I don’t think I’ve ever felt like this about an album. Although I’m not taking the title too literally,” she says, “Aphrodite is the goddess of love, and as far as the music goes, there’s a feeling of euphoria on this one.” Perhaps this new sound reflects her current state of mind? “Am I happy right now?” she asks. “What’s happy? I have moments of happiness and sometimes they’re even strung together, but I definitely have dark moments, too. Thankfully, those don’t last very long. I can go down very quickly, but I won’t stay there.”

On being a gay icon: It’s hard to imagine where Minogue would be today without her gay following, a devout demographic she first encountered in 1998, when drag queens began performing her songs in Sydney, Australia. “I was ecstatic when I found that out,” she says. “Shocked, but ecstatic. Before I knew it, I was cradled in their arms.” Her star rose in tandem with her over-the-top stage show, suggesting that perhaps Minogue knew a good thing when she saw it. But, she insists, “As far as the music goes, I’ve just kept doing what I do, which is, I suppose, what endeared me to them in the first place.” But surely there are times when she caters to her gay fans? “I don’t know how to answer that question,” she says, before a considerable pause. “To be honest, I like not having an answer to that question, because it was never calculated in that way.”

On the comparisons to Madonna: “But it’s a bit of a lazy comparison now,” she says. “If someone were to look at it more closely, they’d see that I have a lot of influences that precede Madonna.” She adds, “We have friends in common. She’ll pass me a message and I’ll pass a message back to her. I’m sure we’ll meet one day and have a good laugh.”

On Lady Gaga: The terrain of dance-pop has shifted considerably over the last couple of years, namely because of Lady Gaga, whose oddball combination of couture and camp has endeared her to fans of all sexual persuasions. “I think there’s an element of me in her, but you’d also have to add into that mix all of the other women we’ve been talking about,” she says. “It’s all part of a chain. Inasmuch as dance music has gone mainstream, I’d love to think that I’ve played a part in that.”

[From Blackbook]

Am I crazy, or does Kylie only really have a devoted following in Australia and the UK? Sure, she had some hits in America, but is she really this global superstar? Eh. And maybe I like Lady Gaga too much (true story), but it seems like Gaga is out there doing her own thing for the most part, and handing the other dance hall favorites (Madge, Kylie) their collective asses. Gaga has had how many number one hits in the past three years? More than Kylie has had in her whole career.

Yes, she is,for the gay at least!
And Kylie even not being a million albums deal, she has a pretty looong and solid career! Let´s see how long Gaga will last!

  2. bite me says:

bitch please, gaga is a fad and nothing more…and people like Rhianna have a lot of number hits, music is not what it used to be

  3. snowball says:

“I think there’s an element of me in her.”

    Bitch, please.

    Apples. Oranges.

  4. Mairead says:

The comparison between Kylie and Madge isn’t that far-fetched. Back in the early 90s Kylie made us compare the two by having a nearly-identical concert set and costume to the Blonde Ambition tour (I think it was that one).
I didn’t see either, but the Gaultier style corsets and Dick Tracey suits would have looked silly next to those catchy-but-banal Stock Aitken and Waterman songs she was doing back then.

But to be fair, Kylie has been in the industry almost as long as Madonna – she was a child actress in WWI-WW2 Aussie soap “The Sullivans” when she was 9.

  5. Pretoria says:

It’s true, she’s huge in Europe, UK, and Australia and has released 11 albums. She doesn’t seem overly concerned in tackling the US market and has said as much in interviews. It doesn’t mean she’s not successful. 😉

  6. OMG are you for real? Kylie is big everywhare BUT america lol
She has sold over 70,000,000 records and actually Kylie has had 8 No1’s in the UK and many more elsewhare lmao
Gaga is the biggest rip off merchant EVER she steals from Madonna, Kylie, Grace Jones, Roisin Murphy, Kerli, David Bowie, Bjork etc etc
Gaga is a fad made by marketing people and her music all sounds the same….

  7. cedar falls says:

“Gaga is out there doing her own thing for the most part.”

Eh? She’s just an amalgam of a number of successful artists, most of whom have been around for years – Grace Jones, Madonna, Gwen Stefani, Elton John, etc… whilst Kylie’s Can’t Get You Out Of My Head is very Gaga-esque (or vice-versa) and that was over a decade ago! Meh, I also doubt Lady G will have one of the most watched weddings in UK TV history, sigh…

  8. jover says:

I’m with all the posters CaCa is already starting to fade flippin the bird at the Mets game was real classy. Let’s see how her followup cd does; hopefully it bombs and she disappears under her tacky outfits.

  9. Luci says:

yeah, I think Kylie M didnt express herself too well, but she’s always been supernice, and superprofessional
and she’s had WAY more #1 hits than 3!!

  10. Angel says:

Honestly couldn’t get past the first paragraph of this. There’s a first.

Manson, Monroe, Madonna, Minogue; the list goes on, and probably covers every letter of the alphabet. There is an element of nearly everyone in Gaga. I don’t get why people don’t get, already, that this is her shtick. And there is nothing wrong with that.

As for Minogue thinking she is more important than she is. Puh-lease. This woman is an international superstar with one of the longest surviving careers of any celebrity. Even Madonna, the quintessential narcissist, has acknowledged that. Think about what you’re saying.

  11. LOVE ANGELINA says:

LOL!!!! This is the woman whose only hit American song is Loco Motion and she thinks she influenced Lady Gaga? Laughable. One thing that bugs me is people wanna say Lady Gaga is unoriginal and that she borrows her style from other artists…which I can see that but I still believe Gaga is quite unique. Lady Gaga never claimed to not be influenced by other artists but people just accuse her of this and that and its sad. Everyone is unique in there own way.

  12. Kitty2000 says:

Kylie has been around – and huge in the UK and elsewhere – forever it seems, and when you hear people [who have interviewed her] talk about her, the universal opinion is that she is gorgeous, charming and just generally a honey. I think she always comes across as genuine and classy. Neither of these words fit Lady Gaga.

  13. waldemar says:

Kylie is a Pop Princess, never will she be or was she a Queen, let alone of Dance Music.

  14. serena says:

I hope she won’t become gaga-like too. And why ask of gaga in an interview? I like her but, who cares what minougue thinks of her or viceversa.

  15. d says:

Minogue is hugely popular everywhere but the US, she’s been around forever, and has a great reputation in the biz. Longevity counts for something. Let’s see how long Gaga lasts before slamming someone like Kylie. Gaga also says outright she’s influenced by various artists and she blatently uses riffs from other performers. I don’t know that Kylie’s done that. Each of her videos and albums are different.

  16. Anna says:

Lady G is over the top outrageous Kylie’s just plain skank.

  17. Mairead says:

The Minogue is definitely extremely famous outside of the US. Even a teenaged Mairead had (HUGE) posters of her up on the bedroom wall 20 years ago!

As for her gay icon status: I remember a Sunday Times Style magazine article from some years back that had her photographed with shoemaker Patrick Cox who said something along the lines of “Kylie is a gay icon because she’s like a living doll that gay designers love dressing up”. He even hand-makes her shoes for her.

But I still really enjoy GaGa, (and prefer her to Kylie), even though she wears her influences very obviously, so it’s all good for me 🙂

  18. rinaz says:

This may be celebitchy, but I love me some Kylie Minogue!

Just one peep of her singing Especially for you with Kermit the frog, and I’ll bet it’ll melt your heart 😀

  19. connie says:

@Love Angeline- after reading some of your latest posts i have to wonder, do you know what you’re talking about when you comment?

  20. d says:

PS: Celebitchy, thanks for fixing the formatting! Or did you. I’m using Firefox now so maybe that’s why everything’s better. Ok, if I could delete this comment, I would, dammit.

  21. bizzy says:

she’s a bigger star than you’d think, assuming you’re doing your thinking in the usa. i was all “huh, did she make a comeback?” and everyone’s all “no, you’ve been in america for twelve years, biatch.”

  22. gg says:

    She wishes.

Also, I’ve seen that gator top on K-Stew.

  23. Chris says:

Kylie is a huge celebrity pretty much everywhere but the US. Her 2008 world tour was a huge stadium show and a fully fledged world tour, minus the US. Not just any pop act could pull that off and have it sell out everywhere she went. As for the Gaga comparisons, if you take a look back at Kylie’s past looks, especially some of the costumes she’s worn during her concerts, you would know that Kylie had been doing the crazy outfit thing long before Gaga. That leopard print catsuit Gaga wears at the end of the telephone video is ripped right out of Kylie’s Showgirl tour.

  24. Shoe Lover says:

Kylie is HUGE. she has been around since the 80’s and has had a slew of hits. Her concerts are insane and really hard to get tickets to. Gaga WISHES she was as successful as Kylie. If you have ever been to a Kylie concert (like me) you would not question how successful she is- the audience go insane for her and really get into it with costumes and crazy outfits or just feather boas and lots of dancing.
The only place Kylie isn’t hugely successful is the US and I don’t think that bothers her

  25. Emily says:

Kylie is big here in Australia. And especially in the gay clubs! She’s one of those people whose last name you don’t need to hear to realise who someone’s talking about. I realised I wanted to be a drag queen when I was dragged on stage by one at a gay club, to sing Kylie’s Spinning Around. Sooo much fun!

  26. DetRiotgirl says:

I used to live in Europe, and I can tell you that Kylie is a mega star there. I love her! I don’t think she’s wrong to say that she may have influenced Lady Gaga. Kylie has been doing insane theatrics a lot longer than Gaga. Kylie has been around my whole life. Let’s see Lady Gaga match that.

Also, I am so over Lady Gaga! I liked Bad Romance, but the rest of her music does absolutely nothing for me. She always sounds like a cheap rip off of Ace of Base or, yes, Kylie. Honestly, I wouldn’t dislike her so much if her fans weren’t so rabid about everything. Her “monsters” seem to think she invented pop music, and I am tired of them claiming that EVERYONE is copying Lady Gaga, when in fact it is the other way around.

Lady Gaga fans are like the playground bullies of pop music. She didn’t invent latex, leotards, shock tactics, objections to Catholicism, stage make up or crazy costumes and, quite frankly, I find her lack of orginiality boring.

  27. Harajuku says:

Kylie IS an international superstar… Everywhere but the U.S. She’s like soccer, the entire world is obsessed, besides America. Literally every single one of Kylie’s 11 studio albums has gone platinum and several have gone more than 7 x Platinum. Look back at some of her performances & you can see where she’s coming from with the ‘Lady Gaga has elements of me’ thing… They both have a really insane theatrical style mixed in with the futuristic… Only Kylie has been doing the performance her entire career – which started before Gaga was even born! If they have a similar performance style, we can’t exactly say Kylie has elements of Gaga… That’s like saying a handbag designed in 1980 was influenced by a bag designed last year.

FIY, just because someone is not successful in the U.S. doesn’t mean they can’t be a superstar. Europe, U.K., Asia and Australia is a much bigger fan base than just the U.S.; and being listed at the top of the U.K.’s rich list, Kylie seems to be doing just fine.

I’m an aussie to say the least. And well I was a fan of kyile for a little while.I got over her because well she’s a budgie. She not creative at all. I don’t believe she writes her own songs and she can’t sing. Kylie was never a good actor she’s just a good faker. Her last preformance in Australia was on live telly on hey hey it’s Saturday, which made a come back but was axed. They got kylie on the show to bring more viewers to watch the show! She sang and believe me she can’t preform. Gaga fan 100 per cent! Kylies an old mole, who’s better disappear before her face falls off. She acts like a teenager!
