Jerry Seinfeld on Lady Gaga: She was disrespectful, she should apologize

When the story broke Tuesday that comedian Jerry Seinfeld called Lady Gaga a “jerk” for flipping off fans and photographers at a Mets game (which she showed up to wearing a black bra and panties and fishnet stockings – you know, normal baseball game attire), resulting in her getting moved to Jerry’s luxury suite so she could have some privacy, a suprising number of people took Gaga’s side. But that’s not stopping Jerry from saying what he thinks about the whole situation. A longtime Mets fan, Jerry was doing some guest commentary on last night’s game when former Met Keith Hernandez, now a broadcaster for the Mets’ games, asked him about Gaga.

If you’ve ever watched Seinfeld, then you know Jerry is a big Mets fan. Tonight, he visited the Mets’ booth with Gary Cohen and Keith Hernandez for a few innings. Lady Gaga came up, and Jerry did not hold back.

Once again, Seinfeld addressed head on the Gaga middle finger incident from her surprise appearance last week at Citi Field last week—one he was brought into after Gaga was given his luxury suite for a few innings without his prior consent. After discussing his feelings on her behavior (spoiler: he’s still not happy about it), Seinfeld delved into the steps taken to cleanse his booth of her presence.

[From Gawker]

Here’s a transcription of what Jerry had to say when asked about Gaga-Gate:

[Seinfield]: I wasn’t really upset. Let me just say that we’re all fans of Lady Gaga. Lame, out-of-it, white guys in their 50’s, that’s her core audience. But I’m very protective of my Mets fans, and I did not like the finger.
[Hernandez]: It’s disrespectful.
[Seinfeld]: Yes, it was disrespectful, and she was a guest in our park.
[Hernandez]: In your suite.
[Gary Cohen, another broadaster]: Well, she was in front row seats, and I guess she was upset with that.
[Jerry]: Well, we don’t understand the kids today and the music industry. I’m sure everyone will all be bigger fans of her now that she’s cussed us out. That’s how it works…She should make a nice apology to the Mets fans. That would be nice. She was a guest here.
We had her as a guest. And then I would be willing to forget the whole thing.
[Cohen]: Everything okay in your seats now? They didn’t trash them?
[Jerry]: No, everything’s fine. We brought the bedbug dog in, Rusty, what’s his name, the Beagle? And it’s all clean.

[From video posted on Gawker]

I think it’s pretty obvious that Jerry Seinfeld is doing what comedians do- making a joke about this whole thing. So what if he’s a “lame, out-of-it, white guy in his 50’s?” He’s still funny, and I think everyone is making kind of a big deal out of this whole thing- which, I’m sure, is exactly what Lady Gaga wanted in the first place. Why else would someone show up to a public place where there are lots of people with cameras, dressed in her underwear? I think Gaga would shrivel up and die if she had to go more than 30 seconds without people looking at her. So, well played, Gaga.

Why does Jerry think he’s relevant in this decade?!?

  2. denise says:

Listen , I cannot stand Gaga, but I can’t stomach Jerry either. So he should just shut it, cause he is looking very childish right about now.

  3. KJ says:

I don’t understand why so many people were jumping to her defense. I like her music and I find her quirky, and I certainly don’t hate her. But what the fuck? She was a total asshole at BOTH Mets games. And she’s way too involved in being “Gaga” to understand that sometimes you can’t get mad at people for paying attention to you when you show up in underwear to a baseball game. Like the time I saw pics of her attending her sister’s HS graduation wearing a HUGE fucking black hat and veil and some white lace suit. I get that she’s all about preserving her image and she’s Gaga all the time, but at your sister’s fucking graduation? She realizes everyone will be staring at her right? Get over yourself.

As far as the Mets stuff, say what you will about Seinfeld but he’s completely right here, whether or not he himself is an ass. Gaga was a jerk both times. She showed up to the games, proceeded to get (more) drunk and make a fool of herself. If she were any other Mets fan, everyone in that stadium would be like “Man, what a jackass that person was. Take your head out of your ass.” But because its GAGA and she’s so ARTISTIC and SUBVERSIVE and DEEP she must be making some sort of statement. No, she got drunk and was an asshole. Not everything she does is social commentary, and sometimes even when she says it is, it’s just a ploy for attention. Shitting on a piece of paper isn’t art because you came up with some long, convoluted explanation about how it’s speaking to the current state of illegal immigration and animal rights. Shut the fuck up. It’s shit on a piece of paper. A jerk is a jerk. She makes good pop music, but jesus christ, get a grip.

  4. denise says:

I don’t think anyone on this thread was defending Gaga. But I’m sure they will pop up sooner or later.

  5. lucy2 says:

Hmm, someone likes the attention this got him, I think!
I do agree that she was disrespectful and he was right to be annoyed.
But I do have to question his “guest in our park” thing – since when is he part of the Mets organization, hmm??? Sorry, Jer – unless you work at the stadium or for the Mets themselves, everyone’s a guest there and should behave as such.

Keith Hernandez + Seinfeld = the “second spitter” episode with the Zapruder like film of KH spitting on Kramer!
And also makes me think of my favorite line from Psych: “She’s lovely…in a young Keith Hernandez kind of way.”

  6. meme says:

Seinfeld is 100% correct and there will be reruns of Seinfeld on TV long after Lady CaCa disappears.

  7. popcorny says:

“well played” -only in terms of tarnishing her image.
And, actually, it was quite surprising how many folks did NOT take ga-goof’s side -even her own fans.
This wasn’t just the general consensus of the participants of celebitchy -it was webwide.
The polls (Popeater, for example) themselves showed a 94% disapproval rate.
Her name recognition was already out there so this wasn’t “well played”, -that’s spin for a dog-in-the-race.
I suppose her face-plant at the airport (in 3+ foot boot-stilts) was also “well played”? Too funny.

  8. a says:

hey jerry: plagiarism is pretty disrespectful too…

  9. BLunted says:

    @KJ

I pretty much agree with everything you said except for the “she makes good music” part. She’s trash and will be forgotten in 10 years time

  10. JuiceinLA says:

Team Seinfeld, 100%. Sticking only to the incident at hand, Caca’s behaviour and wardrobe choices were unacceptable. or to quote @KJ, above, “she got drunk and was an asshole. … any other ticket holder would have been banned before entering or thrown out.”

  11. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Still? Cry me a residual. The only joke is that his extended temper tantrum is feeding the Gaga publicity beast. She doesn’t even need a PR team, she’s got Kramer’s friend doing the work for free.

Also, not taking Jerry Seinfeld’s side is nowhere near the same thing as taking Lady Gaga’s side.

OUR guests, OUR park–should we fire up ‘Zadok the Priest’, or can your coronation go on without it, my liege?

  12. nolanative says:

In total agreement with Denise. Jerry, just move on son.

  13. KJ says:

Sorry, I meant to point out that I referring to the original post about Seinfeld calling Gaga a jerk initially.

  14. denise says:

    @ Nolanative

LOL! @ the son part of your comment 🙂

  15. brenda says:

Ok, we get it. She acted like a jerk. But frankly, I’ve had enough of Jerry’s comments in his attempt to stay relevant. Shut up already.

  16. Lola says:

OMG why doesn’t he just give it a rest. Yes she acted like an infant. So you’re going to dwell on it. Nice.

That’s really mature in retort there Jerry.

  17. denise says:

    @ blunted

You saying we have to stomach Gaga for another ten years??? 🙁

  18. ering says:

To be fair, Jerry keeps getting asked about this. Although Jerry is not an official part of the Mets Organization, he is an extremely loyal fan and obviously a VERY valued customer. God only knows how much money he’s poured into that organization over the years.

Also, how does his wife’s plagiarism case have ANYTHING to do with this?

  19. KJ says:

I really don’t understand the notion that Jerry Seinfeld is trying to stay relevant by making the remarks he did. He seems like an arrogant douche, but come on. He’s SEINFELD. He doesn’t need to “stay relevant.” Answer the question of “what do you think of Lady Gaga being place in your box?” TWICE isn’t trying to stay in the spotlight. He answered a question. Sometimes on this site I feel like any time a celebrity opens their mouths a lot of commenters are like “oh so and so is just trying to extend their 15 min.” This is Jerry friggin Seinfeld here.

As @meme said, Seinfeld reruns will be on LONG after Lady Gaga has retired her hair bows and ridiculously uncomfortable looking shoes.

@ering some people think that character assassination is a good way to get their point across about an entirely unrelated issue. Happens all the time. Face it peeps, no matter what you think of him or his wife, Jerry’s got a damn good point.

  20. suchameangirl says:

??? I am completely confused as to why ppl that “hate” gaga so much feel the need to stop and take time out of their lives to comment on every gaga post. If you dislike her so much then did it ever occur to you that you’re only making her more popular by all the constant hating.Seriously the gaga haters are about as relevant as Jerry..get over it, what was “cool” and important in the 90’s isn’t anymore. As a 27 year old grown woman I don’t get all the irritation towards Gaga at all. She writes her own music, designs her own costumes and stage designs, plays piano and unlike these other trashy pop tarts she has a brain..jealous much? Ugh negative ppl can’t stand to see someone doing better than them

  21. lrm says:

I am now entering the zone of loathe when it comes to gaga.
I hate her-she is repulsive in every way…nothing redeeming about this copycat.
i cannot wait for this fascination w/her to be over.
obviously, she wanted PR and attention for these stunts, and she got them.

some of her fans will of course make it seem like she was all ‘turning societal norms on their head, making us challenge and questin our beliefs about what is normal or appropriate, blah blah blah’.

No, she is further eroding any sense of decency and respect we have in our society. People who are interested in attending sports games, don’t need someone making a point to them-they have a right to enjoy their interests, regardless of how straight laced and robotic like society may be in Gaga’s eyes.

Yea, and Gaga will say it was social activisim-you know, she was ‘gay-ifying the sporting event’.

she’s such an a*shole, and I dont feel strongly about many entertainers or people, to bother saying that.

I dont even allow my son to keep her songs on the radio anymore. da*n it, too bad i actually bought him her cd several months back, before i realized what a monster she was/had become.

she sucks, plain and simple. there’s nothing *new* about her material or act.

  22. RHONYC says:

gosh, remember when keith hernandez was hot?

    *sigh*

  23. Jaclyn says:

I’m a fan of them both, but I have to agree with Jerry this time!

  24. Miss says:

Gaga is a star sure but Jerry is a legend. He is in a whole other league.

  25. Zeit says:

God some of you people are seriously out of it…

Either you’re like three years old, or your brains are completely atrophied.. Seinfeld along with Larry David created a show that completely invented a new type of television, they added expression after expression to our language, and have had more RELEVANCE to our society than that total hack and madonna wannabe will EVER have… she’s just a blip on the radar.

  26. Sara b. says:

Seinfeld is a racist, narcissistic, hypocritical turd. Hypocrite because when sh-t stain Kramer jumped up and down saying the N word Seinfeld wasn’t this harsh. In fact he came to his defense and even gave him a part in that stupid BEE movie. Then when his mildly retarded wife plagarized he didn’t demand she apologize. Talk about disrespectful. He was very disrespectful to his elder Larry King in that interview where he showed his narcissm. Seinfeld is the jerk. He owes earth an apology for existing.

  27. Liana says:

Hmm, someone likes the attention this got him, I think!
    ___________

I’m really not a Seinfeld fan, he actually annoys the piss out of me, but he hardly needs Lady Gaga to get him attention.

  28. Rosalind says:

I am not a Seinfeld fan in the least, but he is 100% right on this occasion. She acted like a total a**, both times.

  29. KJ says:

@suchameangi yeah, its TOTALLY because we’re jealous, not because we have a simple sense of right and wrong and like to see idiots called out on their bullshit. It’s not because maybe, juuuuust maybe, some people find it a little refreshing to see that Lady Gaga isn’t impervious to criticism, and that people aren’t fooled by her sometimes bullshit. No, that can’t possibly be it. Jealous bitches I say! Puh-lease.

I’d like to be as rich as her, but chalking up people being sick of her antics to “jealousy” is super highschool. Not everyone who has something negative to say is “just jealous” of that greatness that is Gaga. Sometimes, they just have an opinion they want to share.

  30. Fluffy Kitten Tail says:

I do not care if his wife plagerized, because it wasn’t Jerry and it has nothing to do with this.

Gaga is an attention ho, plain and simple. She thinks she is above everyone. Look at how she dressed for her sisters graduation. She is vulgar, rude and not very talented in my book.

He is right. Like it or not.

I also agree with the person who said Jerry is a legend. His show is what sitcoms should still be today but aren’t and probably never will be again.

  31. Moore says:

Lady Gaga should apologize. Right after Jerry’s wife.

  32. LOVE ANGELINA says:

What a misogynist jerk. Lady Gaga flipped off photographers taking pictures of her!!!! She was trying to watch the freaking game. Second Lady Gaga is a New Yorker she loves that city. Often when she performs live she mentions New York, she loves that city and those sport teams just as much as him. Then whats with saying he needed to clean his stupid freaking box…Lady Gaga isn’t dirty she didn’t do anything to your rich secluded box you stuck up old fart!!!! Goodness the nerve of some people. Lady Gaga shouldn’t say sorry she didn’t do anything wrong, heck he wasn’t even there. Its not like she ruined the game for him or anyone else. He is the only jerk wad complaining and he wasn’t even there. Stuff him.

  33. Cari says:

I’m on Jerry’s side. Really, she’s just doing this for the shock value and it’s getting old.

  34. yae says:

    Zeit

Jerry did not invent sitcoms or a new type of television. Sitcoms were around years before him and they continue after him. He did not invent a new language or contribute anything deeply meaningful to American society. He made people laugh , and he had his own STYLE. He was not a pioneer or even a first in his line of work.

Jerry’s wife is not a pioneer either for obvious reasons.

  35. Ruffian9 says:

Jo ‘Mama’ Besser: I think I might love you.

  36. denise says:

    @ sarah b

LOLLLLL!!!!!! I loved your well informed comment.

  37. hmm says:

KJ–I agree 100% with everything you’ve said on this thread.

  38. Anastasia says:

Oh good Lord, someone give him some applesauce and a nap. Is he STILL whinging about this?

And wasn’t she flipping off the photogs?

  39. Lita says:

    Stop! It’s Msat time!

    Brilliant to see Msat posts!

  40. jc126 says:

He’s a season ticket holder and those are the seats he purchased, correct? Then he’s totally right on. I know she wasn’t his guest, but if she had been, she could theoretically have gotten his season tickets revoked by bad behavior.
Oh, and he has every right to get p.o.ed at somebody obnoxiously misbehaving at a Mets game. Fans (rightfully) get very offended and annoyed at people who attend and misbehave. There’s a certain camaraderie that develops at games, and someone acting like a drunken idiot and just flipping people off isn’t going to be appreciated. Which they should’t be – if you took your kid to the game and she was there and started shouting obscenities, would you be okay with it?

  41. benven says:

    jc126, well said.

  42. Lia says:

Poor GagGag. She fall down, go boom at the airport today because of her profoundly ridiculous shoes. Karma….

  43. RickG says:

Lady Gaga a 24 year old young lady born and raised in New York city to a close Italian family, being called a Jerk by a 56 year old man , calling her names and saying he hates her is not right. The way I look at it he is only looking for free publicity by being a bully to Gaga.If I was a New Yorker and some 56 year old guy picked on my daughter I would do more then give him the finger I would give him both hands,I would boycot Seinfeld and the Mets organization for setting Gaga up and informing the paparazzi where she would be sitting. All she wanted to do is enjoy a baseball game like any New Yorker without being harassed by the paparazzi.Seinfeld should be thanking Gaga for helping him get the publicity instead of calling her names that is not a mature thing to do.He might think it’s funny but I would say he is the JERK.I would say Seinfeld owes all the New York fathers and Gaga an apology.

  44. weslyn says:

can she not enjoy a ballgame without dressing like a hooker on the stroll..i’m thinkin not too many people could enter the ball park like that- it’s a family event- and had i been there and came across her..i would have raised hell

  45. Skuzz says:

Lol at the “Jerry and Mets called the possarazzi”. First off they’re always there looking for stars, second shes the type of fame-ho who would call them herself.

Seinfield doesnt need the attention. If Aniston got 25m a year for 5 years for syndicating Friends, what do you think HE got? He’s an out of touch 50 y.o white dude, but I think he’s fine with that. He’s not the one you see pushing himself into the news every day, guy is just enjoying his money now.

All kinds of Lol at his bed-bugs remark. You know that woman in carrying like 8 different stds and was sitting in his chairs in lacy panties. Im not sure there’s enough Lysol in the world to clean that mess.

  46. Liana says:

I would say Seinfeld owes all the New York fathers and Gaga an apology.
    _______________

Seinfeld is a New Yorker and a father, also. So…

She behaved like a jerk. If you go to a game at Citi or Yankee stadium in your bra and panties, expect to be photographed (actually, if any of US showed up like that, we’d probably be asked to put on some clothing or go home).

I don’t care how close her family is, how New York she is, how Italian she is (I’m all of the above, though I’m bi-Coastal because of my career), it doesn’t give her the right to continually prance about in public in her underwear flipping off anyone at a family venue. She could have simply shown up to the game in actual clothing, graciously accepted her premium front row seats (that someone may or may not have been ousted from for her in the first place) and when she didn’t like the attention that I can’t imagine someone showing up at a stadium in her underwear got, she could have politely requested another more private seat without resorting to profanity and the bird. But no. She did everything in her power to ensure that she got the attention she wanted, then complained about it. Same crap as she pulled at the Yankee game only a few days later.

Seinfeld is an ass, but even an ass occasionally has a correct opinion of someone’s behavior.

  47. bnice says:

Agree with KJ and others in that vein…she’s an entertainer, not an artist, and even if she were Freida-frickin-Kahlo, when she acts like a boob, there is no reason why it can’t be remarked on. The same freedom of speech that allows her to say whatever she wants means other people also get to say whatever they want about her and her actions. I have nothing against her, really (though I reiterate I don’t see her as much of an “artist”), but those who aim to take down sacred cows must prepare themselves for being treated to the same thing if they become a bit too “sacred” in their own minds.

I’m not a huge Seinfeld fan, either, and I don’t know how the “box” system works, but if he paid for it and then she got to sit in it because she was causing a scene (which could probably have been avoided for the most part by wearing a little thing called “clothing”), that would stick in my craw a little bit, too.

  48. Cletus says:

I think that a 27 year old grown woman should know better than to use the abbreviation “ppl” when posting, because it makes her look like a 14 year old girl, and not even a very bright one.

As for the rest: blah, blah BLAH. This shit is old and done to death. NEXT!

  49. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

@ruffian9: And well you should. Kidding, thanks–that was cute.

Here’s the thing, I don’t think that there are many people who think that what she did was right, I sure don’t. But, (and only speaking for myself here, though I get the feeling that some posters may feel as I do) the aftermath was just so unbecoming that throwing support behind him just feels off. She acted like a muff stain, yes, but it’s also ancient history. She’s surely moving on to her next stunt or embarassment, while this issue sputters and dies in the stadium.

She so clearly did not do so, but if he had handled it with a little class or dignity, he would’ve scored a lot of points–with some of his naysayers, even. Since he essentially didn’t, if they’re so inclined, people can easily see this incident as another entry into the ‘Jerry Seinfeld Thinks He’s Better Than You And So The Normal Rules Don’t Apply To Him And His Posse, And If You Don’t Know That, He’ll Remind Everybody Within Bitching Distance, Forever And Ever, Amen’ catalogue of dubious hits. That’s the thing with various virtues, they don’t count for a lot until they’re tested, or until they are called upon when it’s difficult or not very fun to have to employ them. 56 is hardly a fossil, but considering that he is more than twice her age, he could have easily shown her to be the troublemaking, insecure or grand’standing’ little girl that she can so often be in her public antics or guises.

These crazy celebrities, ‘grace’ is just a name, huh?

  50. Cletus says:

    HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHA, MUFF STAIN!!!

That’s freaking awesome, I’m gonna call my mom that the next time she messes with me about my hair or tells me to put on more blush.

  51. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:
