Angelina Jolie didn’t win the weekend box office, plus thoughts on ‘Salt’

Here are some photos of Angelina Jolie promoting Salt today in Russia. It’s interesting that the first country the Salt international promotional tour goes to is Russia – usually it’s England or Germany, two countries where American stars play very well. But considering Salt’s subject matter, I guess Moscow makes sense, although I’m not sure what kind of reception it will get. I went to see Salt over the weekend, and while I didn’t hate it, I didn’t love it either. Beware, lovers and haters: I’m not hating on La Jolie, who I do like (a lot), and who made the film very watchable. I enjoyed her wigs (the short little page-boy wig was a particular favorite) and I was impressed by the stunt work in the film, and there were even a couple of stunts that she did where I literally gasped, surprised she hadn’t seriously hurt herself. But… the film needed another 15 minutes of plot. It needed a few more re-writes, and it needed just a few modern touches, because some of the plot points were very dated and/or nonsensical. My problem was with the script, I guess that’s what I’m saying.

Audiences embraced Salt domestically, although not enough to beat cinematic juggernaut Inception. As the box office receipts are still being tallied, it looks like Inception won the weekend with something like $43.5 million, and Salt came in second with $36.5-37.7 million (those numbers will likely change, it‘s around $37 million best guesses right now). To give you some random action-y perspective, action rom-coms like Knight & Day earned $20.1 million its opening weekend, and Bounty Hunter made $20.6 million its opening weekend.

The Daily Mirror also ran a very sappy, cloying piece about Angelina and Brad today – if they aren’t breaking up, they’re going to have more babies, it’s seems:

With six children and millions in the bank, you would think Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were finally ready to settle down and take life a little easier. But just days after winning a court battle over hurtful lies that they were about to split, we can reveal Brangelina are happier than ever – and planning to adopt yet another child.

Hollywood hunk Brad, 46, has been pouring his heart out to pals about his love for Angelina, 35, calling her a “wonderful mother” whom he will be with for ever.

“I love Angie and we were never going to split up.” Brad told a close friend. “That is why I had to do something about all the untrue rumours flying around about us and protect my family. The truth is that we are in love, we have six kids together and she’s the mother to my children and a delightful person. She is a wonderful mother. Angie just loves babies – and she wants another.”

The superstar couple already have Maddox, eight, Pax, six, five-year-old Zahara, Shiloh, four, and two-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne. They adopted Maddox from Cambodia, Zahara from Ethiopia and Pax from Vietnam. And the pair aren’t ruling out trying to adopt another baby as they prepare to add to their flock. Speaking to his friend, Brad added: “We wanted to adopt another baby from Ethipoia, where we adopted Zahara, but the country have clamped down. It means it is very hard to take babies out of there and to America now, but we are going to try for one more baby. The twins are two years old now and getting really big. And Shiloh is growing up so fast. She likes boy’s clothes … I think she thinks she actually is a little boy! It is so funny. Our children bring us so much joy.”

News that the pair hope to adopt another baby comes days after they made a dazzling appearance at the premiere of Angelina’s new thriller movie Salt. The couple looked happier than ever, further dispelling the malicious rumours that they were about to divorce. And Brad, who is currently filming a new movie about baseball, says the secret to the couple’s happiness is that they are able to balance raising a big family with hectic work schedules.

He told the friend: “Angelina and I never do our filming at the same time now. When she is on set, I will be caring for the children and when I am working, Angie does the same. It is really important that one of us is there for the kids. And we always ensure we are.” His comments on their plans to expand their family came as it was revealed the couple, who already own homes in Los Angeles and France, recently bought a 15-bedroom mansion in Italy for £25million. The mansion is in the hills of Valpolicella, Verona, with seven bathrooms, a home cinema, a gym, two swimming pools, and jacuzzi spread over 18,000sq ft. Sounds like plenty of room for a seventh child to run around in with his or her siblings…

[From The Daily Mirror]

Damn, did Brad really buy an Italian mansion? Probably not, but that’s interesting gossip. Personally, I think I would prefer an Italian mansion to a French one – the food is just better (I love pasta). But back to this gossipy friend who Brad apparently gushes to – Zahara, right?

So, after Angelina made it very clear that there will be no more babies in the near future, this rag decides that they will adopt!! Interesting, isn’t it? Also, every quote from “Brad” is probably completely made up, like fanfic. These rags just can’t help themselves, can they?

I think I’ll wait until later today to get a better total of the domestic and international box office for “Salt” but from the preliminary totals, it’s doing about what was expected.

  2. angela says:

I’ll probably see both Salt and Inception this week.

  3. kama says:

Were none of the other actors invited? Where’s Liev?

  4. Siren6 says:

    Man she looks great!

  5. Cheyenne says:

The black/white is okay but she was slammin’ in bright red. She should wear bright colors more often.

  6. Heather says:

I just can’t find someone so frail believable as an action star…it’s not like her Tomb Raider days and she was fairly small then too.

  7. Maritza says:

She is absolutely beautiful, its a pity she has so many tatoos.

  8. She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named says:

Ha! Those supposed quotes form Brad are high-larious!

I like she she has ever-so-slight a belly in that side shot. She actually looks like a very slim woman who’s borne children. *gasp!* no tummy tuck for her = awesome.

I actually don’t think she looks too skinny here at all. She does have exceptionally long arms and legs,(it’s like her arms should end a few inches shorter than they do?) but her body overall looks healthy. Glad to see it, she looked terrible there for awhile…

Will see Salt asap. Gotta support the sisterhood.

Also, thoughts on red lips making a comeback?

  9. Dhavy says:

Every time I see new pictures of her like these it makes me start thinking about natural beauties that have not been altered by plastic surgery….can’t think of anyone now

  10. lisa says:

Salt was a lot of fun. AND I so will be seeing it again. People in my audience were clapping and it was packed..

so regardless of a number 1 showing. That movie was and is a big success.. People are wanting to see it more then once and word of mouth will also help.

Really just a fun summer film..and I can’t wait for SALT 2.. we need more

She looks great in that red dress.. and it is just always wonderful when she wears color.. She owns that red.

The rags really need to spot worrying about when and how they will build THEIR FAMILY. IT REALLY IS NO ONES BUSINESS. AND SINCE WHEN do their friends talk to the media. NEVER. that story is BS.. and I don’t care about the positive points. Full of BS..

  11. Anett says:

    She should start eating:-((((

  12. The Truth Fairy says:

@Maritza – And just why is that a pity ???

  13. viper says:

I LOVED inception that movie is absolutely refreshing, brain massaging, and very much a masterpeice. Nolan is a great Director and his movies have never fell short.

After watching Salt however….I can’t STAND mary-sues. The stunts were TERRIBLE and unrealistic and the was even a point where jolie throws a blow and you can see there is a HUGE gap between her and the person she was ‘hitting’ ie stuntman- which KILLED the scene. It was just God aweful and some scenes were just plain unnesseary and offered nothing to the actual story. The one thing I hated was how forced upon the character was on the audience. Trying to make her bigger than she actually is. It was just a Godaweful movie and iM glad I didnt pay for my seat.

  14. Lucky Charm says:

She looks amazing here, as always. And as far as being thin, she has muscle which makes her completely believable in her action sequences. If you read what her diet & workout routines were while filming this you’d know why she wasn’t softer & fuller, which in my opinion would have made her less believable. And I find nothing wrong with tattoos, especially when they all mean something very personal.

  15. Anon says:

I haven’t seen Salt yet, and probably will wait for it on DVD or TV as I’m not the biggest fan of the genre in general and the reviews were not the best – echoing what you said.

I’m not sure though why you are posting action/rom-com opening numbers as a comparison – Salt was not in that genre, and therefore would be better compared to other strict action flicks which tend to do better financially. Besides, the two action/rom-coms you posted had very different production budgets from each other, and Salt – the LA Times released it’s production budget as $130 million, while Knight & Day’s is listed as $117 million, and The Bounty Hunter’s is listed as a much smaller $40 million. By the numbers on opening weekends for each, TBH took 51.5% of its production budget, Salt 28%, and K&D 17%. However, none of these can really compare to each other, but if we must, the closest comparison would be Knight and Day I suppose.

  16. Meanchick says:

Salt sucked ass big time! I didn’t know if it was a movie about a supposed Russian sleeper or a movie about her damn lips, which by the way stayed pink, pouty and well-defined no matter what happened! Is she just taking the $ now and not even bothering to read the scripts anymore?

  17. RobN says:

I love the way Brad’s “quotes” all sound like they were translated by somebody who speaks english as a second language. And please raise your hand if you’re a straight American male who describes his partner to a friend as “delightful”.

  18. Camille says:

She looks gorgeous here (again). I love the lipstick. Nice to see a pop of colour on her.

I will see Salt eventually, but probably on DVD. It looks like a switch your brain off, just go with it action flick.
Those numbers don’t sound too bad to me, I am sure it will earn its costs back. At least it didn’t come in last or something lol. And I doubt anything was going to topple Inception over at the BO.

  19. Buddha DeCat says:

I’m going to see Salt on Monday (the movie theater where I live does half-price tickets Monday-Thursday nights!). I saw Inception last Monday — totally overrated — great visual effects but no emotional connection to the characters. Reminded me of a video game. People are wondering about the meaning of the ending but I don’t care — if I don’t care about the character I don’t care about the resolution.

  20. Maria says:

I went to see Salt yesterday, and I really enjoyed it! It’s intriguing from the beginning and pulls you in with the mystery of Salt’s identity. The theater was packed with ALL kinds of folks, all races, males and females of all ages, which made me think that Angelina Jolie is one of the few stars who appeal to all kinds of audiences.

Jolie is good in action film, and I went to see it because of her. I think she is good and believable as far as action films go. Frail or not, She is no less believable jumping from one truck to another than any other action star fighting off a whole gang of fighters by himself!

  21. mm says:

Is it weird that I like how she doesn’t seem to have that many clothes? Like, she seems to wear things (the shoes, the skirt, etc.) over and over, more like we peasants do.

    Just saying . . .

  22. OC lady says:

Actually the film critic Scott Mendelson placed Salt’s budget @ around 75 million http://www.huffingtonpost.com/scott-mendelson/salt-is-strong-but-incept_b_658627.html

For that, I think the movie fared well. It didn’t get the numbers of Wanted (50 million) but 35+ million is nothing to sneeze at. I just love it that she beat Tom Cruise. She also beat other movies this year w/male leads. That’s pretty cool if you ask me. 🙂 Maybe we can get more girls in the action genre.

  23. mimi says:

Saw it with a couple of friends – we all liked it. Totally unrealistic – but still very entertaining..kept me interested the whole way through.

  24. Beth says:

I keep hearing different numbers for Salt. I’ve heard $80 million for the movie and $110-$120 when including promotion. It did what it was expected to do opening weekend. Being #1 is nice but it’s the longrun that determines if it’s a hit movie. I don’t know why people are calling it bomb when it could make more than $100 million after it’s run and is expected to be big internationally.
Why post that adoption story? A new one comes out everyday. I love how the “friend” retells the conversation word for word. The conversation sounds like it was made from quotes from interviews. Why would Brad have to tell a close friend that Zahara is from Ethiopia when that would be common knowledge?

  25. ADAM says:

the pictures with the red dress are AMAZING…what a beauty..she’s a godess

  26. Morgs says:

Well hello Ms. Scarlett. Digging the red dress on her. Did she put her extensions back in? Something’s….her face…plastic…

    Like the red dress.

  27. Layla says:

I loved Salt and can’t wait for the sequel! my theater was packed too and I saw a sunday matinee at 12pm.

  28. Kelly says:

She looks nice in that vermillion gown- it puts some much needed weight on her. But Ive said it before, those tattoos are budget. I love tatts, but those are nasty.

  29. sandy says:

Angelina is great, like her or not, there is no denying her, if i didn’t like her, i would still be intrigue with her, lets face it, i don’t know too many people like her, she just seems to be well rounded, intelligent, well read, on things that matter, you could tell that clothes and other things like body images is an after thought, even her movies, they pay the bills as well as help others, how cool is that?

  30. Dana M says:

She looks stunnng. What a beautiful lady.

  31. Sofia says:

My sister saw Salt and was not impressed, she said it was just badly done and silly and cliched (kind of what the NY Post review said, but I might catch it on DVD for kicks)…

I did see Inception this weekend, it was good, very smart, and I did think there was an emotional aspect and connection to Leo and his wife, my all-time favorite Marion Cotillard! Now that is a sexy woman.

I think Angelina looks good in that red gown, it is kind of similar to the pretty nude flowy thing she wore to Cannes, isn’t it? A good cut for her slender frame. The red looks good on her. But, I think she’d look so much healthier by gaining a little weight and working out to get some muscle tone….and getting rid of the tattoos, it just ins’t working as well as she’s aging. Is that a new one on her arm, anyone know? The one on the inside of her forearm? I think deciphering her tattoos is pretty interesting!

  32. Mia says:

Saw it with a group of gal pals. We loved it. Mom saw it with her friends. She loved it. We plan on going to see it together next weekend.

  33. purelife says:

Pitt is sooooooo lucky to sleep with her every night!

  34. lovelyday1 says:

She looks beautiful….no denying that. I’ll definitely be seeing Salt at the theater.

  35. mln says:

I liked Salt alot, I don’t know if anyone else could have pulled it off. Her performance was much better than Wanted. I love the red dress BTW.

  36. Shi-gatsu says:

Inception is just a better film -bottom line – hands down. Salt is a more “go with the flow” and enjoy the beauty of Jolie kind of film. It’s been done – again, by Jolie.

Inception was a breath of fresh air and the characters are very intriguing – especially Marion Cotillard’s character. Cotillard is a much better actress too.

  37. DD says:

beautiful face, beautiful hair, beautiful makeup… unflattering skirt 🙁 . Stunning head to toe in the red dress though!

  38. mln says:

@gatsu I commented on another post although I think Inception was good it is WAY overated. I don’t think it is better than the Dark Knight, and not anywhere as good of a film as the Matrix. In my book its a (sucessful)reboot of Shutter Island I am going to see it again eventually maybe I’ll change my mind.

  39. DD says:

@lisa you really sound like hired public relations. I find that odd.

  40. Andrea says:

I like how the article states that Brad said that he and Angie will never “divorce”. Did they get married, and I just missed that?

    @RobN
You’re right,it does sound like the article was translated.

  41. Kali says:

I’d like to see this movie. And wow, Angelina looks gorgeous in the red dress.

  42. chris says:

    Stunning!

  43. Lindsay says:

The wind made the red dress photos look great. It shows of the features of the dress rather than looking like a red v-neck dress with ruching. It also made it look kind of like she thought of something else to do with her hair… but of course not. In the top photo she looks horrid.

DD- Not nearly as much as Maria does! I don’t think people were there only to see her. *gasp* Action films appeal to a wider audience. Plus, I’m sure some people came to see Liev Schreiber. 🙂

The Truth Fairy – First cool screen name. Second, it is a pity because they are TACKY. They take away from whatever she wears no matter how stunning the dress. Megan Fox probably got that god awful Marylin Monroe tattoo to have tats just as distracting.

  44. ruru says:

    Gorgeous dress! (the red one)

  45. Katija says:

It was OK. I will say though, considering how many actors butcher the language (Hi Mickey Rourke!), both Angelina and Liev did a GREAT job with their Russian. Liev especially.

@Lisa – Question: How much is Columbia Pictures paying their PR drones? You in the LA or NY offices?

  46. Lindsay says:

Pajiba has a funny review “Bourne Meets Body Dysmorphia (only if you believe she is a mere mortal who makes mistakes, otherwise just keep looking at the pretty pictures 😉 )

    Funniest part:
“And maybe it shouldn’t matter, and maybe it makes me a raging asshole for saying this, but when casting the role for a bad-ass double, triple, or quadruple CIA Agent who will be tasked with jumping off of bridges onto moving 18-wheelers, roughing up aggressors, or standing up to a stiff wind, it might have been in the best interest of the studio to bring aboard someone capable in real life of winning two out of three arm wrestling matches with Betty White. Maybe that sounds shallow, but this is not a case of lookism, mind you: Angelina Jolie is a beautiful woman, and Wanted more than displayed her action bona fides. Unfortunately, it appears as though Ms. Jolie hasn’t eaten since she left the set of Wanted…”

“She’s a withered carcass parading around in a blond wig and pea-coat that she probably needs invisible wires to support. And after cracking three dozen heads in Salt, you begin to wonder why no one thinks to pull out the one thing that could knock the Evelyn Salt immovable force on her ass, namely a window fan set to medium.”

    http://www.pajiba.com/film_reviews/salt-review-bourne-meets-body-dysmorphia.php

  47. Lindsay says:

Oh, and a link to her career assessment they do weekly-ish of A-List and B-List actors:

    http://www.pajiba.com/career_assessments/angelina-jolie-career-assessment.php

  48. Sphinx says:

Did she dislocate every joint in her hands doing the stunt work? rheumatism?
ouch! ouch! She does like pain.

  49. anon1000 says:

Salt was a great summer movie. Angie kicked azz and was beautiful to boot. Salt will be take the #1 spot next weekend.

  50. Nessie says:

photo’s usually put up a pound of three, so can you imagine how thin she is in real life? I’m sorry to say that the clothes are amazing, but she is nothing like the beauty she was a few years ago. It seems like fame took it’s toll, not that it’s her fault, but I just don’t see any liveliness in her anymore, she is more like a statue than anything else. Shame.

  51. anon1000 says:

angelina jolie is even more beautiful because she has grown from selfish youth into a fulfilled wife, mother, artist and humanitarian. like she said, love is the most important thing a human being can experience and angie has found that love from her man Brad Pitt, her children, her extended family. and she pays it forward.

  52. Sharonkings says:

Havent seen Salt, but Inception is one of the best movies Ive ever seen!
Angelina should gain 5-10lbs! Shes wayyy too skinny.

  53. uggtop says:

It needed a few more re-writes, and it needed just a few modern touches, because some of the plot points were very dated and/or nonsensical.

  54. Luci says:

how often do americans go to the cinema?!
I havent paid to watch a movie in ages!!

  55. The Hamm is My Dream Man says:

An appropriate comparison would be The Bourne Identity, of which everyone is saying this is a poor imitation.

It opened with about the same amount of money per theater and it didn’t have nearly the same promotional outreach and didn’t have a supposedly A-list star leading the show. I predict that this’ll drop off precipitously next weekend, probably more than 50%.

This woman could cut diamonds with her elbows. And her top in that picture looks like a nightie.

I don’t plan on wasting any money on this full diaper load of schlock.

EDIT-Best part of Pajiba review of this film:
“I’d like to say I could rise above that distraction but when an action movie demands as much physical interaction as Salt does, it’s hard not to wonder whether starvation will kill her before the bad guys do. But on the other hand, Salt will likely prove a boon to theaters, as sympathetic hunger pangs are likely to drive up concession sales.”

  56. lisa says:

Don’t understand why people are comparing Salt and Inception.. two different movies. And why is it necessary to trash one to praise the other. Inception is what it is. And Salt was not trying to be a “best movie of the year”.. It was just FUN.. and for as many negative reviews. There are great positive ones. People love it and are going to see it more then once. Clapping at the end..Yeah. She was great. And if realism is the tent pole for action movies then we could shut down every single one that the men are doing. But nobody complains about the logic of what they are doing on film. I like that she did not bulk up like the men do or women. She was a woman that was trained used that to do her thing. We buy Jaden Smith in Karate kid.. and we buy all the others but never speak of size. WELL let a 6 year old kick you and see if it hurts.

The movie was fun and if you want to have a good time head out to see SALT. It didn’t disappoint at all. JUST a great summer movie.

  57. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Salt is clearly nothing like The Bourne Identity. Not even a tiny bit. The two main characters have like one or two things in common. Other than that you can’t compare Salt to any movie, maybe you can but I haven’t seen one like it.

I thought Salt was very good. First of all Angelina gave an amazing performance. I thought she was amazing. Not just physically but also in terms of pure emotion and making you care for her character. She was kicking so much ass it was incredible. The plot was mystery and I loved it. I had no idea what the hell was going on and I will admit I like that. I like surprises…good ones of course but I loved Salt was big ole surprise. I certainly got confused. It was such a good movie.

I have always always always like to see Angelina in red, she has worn red before but it was a short red dress, and damn she does not disappoint. Momma looks hawt!!! OMG!!!

  58. autotron says:

I don’t think she’s too skinny, particularly as this seems to be her natural body-weight. Shit, she’s bigger than I am so I can’t say anything in that regard (honestly I am slightly taken aback by everyone saying she’s too thin…), HOWEVER i do feel that her slender frame is accentuating the plastic in her face…NOT GOOD.

  59. malachais says:

She’s looks stunning in the Red Versace Dress, IMHO if she gained about 10lbs (circa Tomb Raider Days) she would look AMAZING. I might go see Salt 😛

I’m on vacay so will see it, but glad I read these posts so I can keep expectations low.

  61. Kbomb says:

    @lisa: wow.

@autotron: generally when someone’s shoulders point UP with bones instead of being rounded, they are considered too thin. If you are thinner than that I would recommend a sandwich.

  62. daisy424 says:

    Love her in RED!

  63. meme says:

Yes, she’s a beautiful woman but Salt was a stupid movie and she can’t act.

  64. RHONYC says:

pics # 2 & 4 in the red dress are what hollywood stars are made of.

    incredible.

what can you say? the b%tch has got it all. great kids. great career. great partner. she’s doing the damn thing. and looks smokin’ hot doin it…and THAT’S why people hate her.

she is the ultimate ‘enjoli’ woman.

she can bring home the bacon…
    *ba-bada-badum*
fry it up in a pan
    *ba-bada-badum*

    cause she’s the wo-man!

    lol 🙂

  66. denise says:

Loving the red dress on her, even more so ’cause she’s covering her twig legs. Two thumbs up on this look. Fab.

  67. xxodettexx says:

angelina jolie is even more beautiful because she has grown from selfish youth into a fulfilled wife, mother, artist and humanitarian. like she said, love is the most important thing a human being can experience and angie has found that love from her man Brad Pitt, her children, her extended family. and she pays it forward.

I loved Salt refreshing to see an actress kicking a**, Can’t wait for sequel.Angie is an international star I predict the foreign box office will double the domestic take .Wanted made 60% of its b.o. take abroad.

  71. The Hamm is My Dream Man says:

I just have to roll my eyes at the “jealous bitches” nonsense because you know what it really is? Playground childishness. “You don’t like her because you’re a stupidhead!” is really what that is.

A person couldn’t possibly dislike this woman because they feel she’s a bad actress who has made a career of being “controversial” and having big lips for a white girl. A person couldn’t possibly dislike this woman because drags her children all over the world, not giving them an ounce of stability (some people disagree and I respect their opinions and won’t call them doo doo heads). Nor because to them she comes off as fake and holier than thou.

No no no, they are just jellis h8ters who want her family, her job and her humanitarianism. Because that is the best and only way to live one’s life in a fulfilled manner.

  72. Cinderella says:

That red dress did wonders for her. Whoever put her in the first ensemble should be slapped.

  73. Majosha says:

The Hamm: Many high fives your way.

Also, I love how, instead of just praising Salt, some of these commenters report their time at the theater like it was some kind of religious experience. Not just for them, but for EVERYONE. People of all ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, and nationalities were brought together in a celebration of the human spirit as Angie punched her foes in the face and then blew up their cars. In fact, the audience was so enthralled that they clapped and cried out as the movie played out before them. Praise Anjesus!

  74. sandy says:

haters are going to hate, no matter what, we can’t stop it, and yes, some of it is jealousy, because as they state why they dislike her, she is everything her fans love about her inspite of the hate, again, she is intelligent, beautiful, great man and fulfilled mother with wonderful, beautiful kids who appears to be happy, and well adjusted, she is giving, and caring. a woman of substance, and it seems she have a whole lot of people who love and admire her for that.

I like the B&W outfit, but don’t care for her hair. The red dress is pretty, glad to see her in a color for a change. Don’t care for the red lipstick on her though, and the tattoos always ruin an elegant look for me.

Pretty much all the reviews I’ve seen have been that she’s good in the movie, but the film itself is lacking and not great. I’ll maybe catch it on DVD. I can watch her in an action film, don’t care for her in dramas.

I saw Inception again over the weekend, this time in IMAX, and the place was PACKED. I expect that to rack up the $ for several weeks to come. Salt had a good opening, but I could see it losing steam much more quickly.

  76. Freya says:

So Inception is #1, but since I’m not crazy about diCaprio I’ll see it when it comes on TV.
I will see SALT in the theater when it comes here.

    LOL @ Majosha. Thank you!
