Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz race cars, with hilarious results

Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz were guests on the very entertaining British car show, Top Gear. I used to watch this show with my husband (we can’t get it where we live now, but we’re going to rent it on Netflix on demand now that I’m reminded!) and it’s surprisingly entertaining for all genders and non-car enthusiasts alike. I’m not a car person at all and I love this show. They pull all sorts of fun stunts that can also be very dangerous, as evidenced by the very serious accident that co-presenter Richard Hammond suffered in 2006. Hammond has since fully recovered after a brain injury and is back on the show.

Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz separately raced a Kia around a track as part of Top Gear’s “reasonably priced car” race event, and I’m not going to post spoilers to the above video in this text because I want you to watch it and see for yourself! There are spoilers in the link to E!’s text quoted below. (The text itself doesn’t contain that spoiler.) I know it’s silly to talk about “spoilers” for a TV show, but if you watch the video you’ll see why I want to keep the suspense going. It’s fun and will brighten up your day:

Well if the movie thing stops working out (and, after the release of Knight and Day, you never know…), at least Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz can fall back on race-car driving.

Cruise and Diaz tore up the track during a joint appearance on the BBC’s Top Gear on Sunday, both zipping through the course in astounding time—with the Mission: Impossible star narrowly averting a potentially dangerous accident.

[Cruise’s near-miss is about at the three-minute mark in the clip above]

To promote the U.K. launch of their action flick, the actors got behind the wheel of a Kia for a segment called “Star in a Reasonably Priced Car” and attempted to break the course record held by Harry Potter star Rupert Grint.

Diaz, wearing her best game face and dropping her best F-bombs (“some of this is actually broadcastable,” quipped host Jeremy Clarkson), went first and flew around the circuit, just edging Grint’s time.

Then came Cruise, who at the end of his ride drifted off the track and briefly went up on two wheels but managed to bring the car back down without killing himself.

[From E! Online]

For all you can say about Tom Cruise, he is a really good sport and he kept his composure while on the track. He was so calm when racing around while Cameron was swearing like a trucker! That may have a lot to do with the fact that Tom has extensive experience racing cars, having starred in the 1990 film Days of Thunder.

Knight & Day may not have cleaned up at the box office, but it’s hanging in there. So far it’s grossed $161.78 million worldwide and had a production budget of $117 million, according to Box Office Mojo. Add in the DVD sales and it’s in the black, although it surely didn’t make as much as the studio is hoping for. I’ll probably catch it on DVD. Cruise is not my favorite person, but I can suspend disbelief when I see him on film. He plays crazy so well.

Also, don’t Tom and Cameron seem really cozy with each other? If Cameron was getting touchy feely like that with any other co-star there would definitely be affair rumors.

Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz are shown at premieres of Knight & Day in London (gray sweater dress, 7/22/10) and in France (black and white dress, 7/23/10). Credit: WENN.com

    tom is one clingy guy.

  2. denise says:

Cammy’s great legs distract from her fug face.

Oh and I would never get in a car driven by Tom Cruise.

  3. bite me says:

    Thomas makes me 🙁

  4. lmae says:

If Cameron were a guy, Tom would so be hittin’ that.

  5. Andrea says:

I’m going to start keeping a count of how many times Tommy Girl wears those lift/heel/boot things. So far I’m at 343, but he still has a few premiers to go…

  6. TaylorB says:

I am confused, Cameron is wearing pretty high heels and if memory serves she is pretty tall to begin with… How is Tom the same height? Isn’t he just a wee little man?

  7. denise says:

    @ Taylor B

Tom wears lifts in his shoes to give him height. I think he should do like Prince, and just wear heels. I mean it’s so obvious he’s not that tall.

  8. Reason says:

I get a brother/sister bff vibe from them. They’re both too alpha to be together, but they’re probably pretty competitive with eachother, in a playful way.

  9. TaylorB says:

    Denise,

You are so right. Everyone knows he is a Lilliputian, Katie is like 5ft 8 and she towers over him. I must confess I am totally curious how the lifts work, is he on his toes (like a high heel)but inside the boots or is the whole foot lifted inside the shoe like Herman Munster.

  10. mln says:

I loved the video they are both racing fiends…too bad with all of their likablity K & D is still something I’ll watch on netflix

  11. denise says:

    @ Taylor B

LOL!! I was wondering the same thing. HIs feet must be really elevated in those shoes. Have you noticed he’s been wearing the same boots for every premiere? Poor Tommy, it’s so embaressing.

  12. Statler says:

Okay, is it just me or would it not be super fun to compete on that show?

  13. Fae says:

Never mind Richard Hammond, it’s all about the subtle, gentlemanly brilliance that is James May.

  14. electric says:

what the hell kind of lifts is Cruise wearing to be the same height as Cammy D???

  15. malina says:

    his make-up’s good!

  16. Mairead says:

    @ Fae – fellow “Mayniac” here 😉

Before I get onto the programme, I’ll just address this:
“Hammond has since fully recovered after a brain injury and is back on the show.”
Only if you discount the really horrific side effect that his hair is now more tragic than James May’s 😆

But yeah – their bit was actually very good. Jezza having a crisis when Cammie said “a six-cylinder carburretor for a ’66 ‘vet” was hilarious 😆
Tom was his usual interview-charming self. And they do have a great friendly chemistry together.

BUT – I call Xenu-shenanigans! Cruise was all over the place on his lap. I mean, Michael Gambon would have been proud of how he took that last corner (known as “Gambon” due to the fact that Gambon always nearly kills himself on it). It cured me of any latent liking of Cruise though, 😉
And Teeny Tom has extra-high lifts on because Jeremy Clarkson is 6’4″ and would have made him look like a toddler.

I still adore Cammy however, she drives like me: in a cabin with the air turned blue! 😈

  17. Mairead says:

Oh. And I’ll deny it if anyone of you lets the cat out of the bag – but when I saw the trailer for “Knight & Day” last week, I wanted to see it 😳

  18. Mistral says:

That show is funny. Do they still do the “Would you drive Kristen Scott Thomas in this car?” test?

  19. Sally says:

Watched this ep – Tom and Cameron were really funny! I’ll also join in with the James May love <3 He’s always been my favourite presenter!

    @Mistral: not for a while, but perhaps it’ll make a comeback! 😀

  20. mojoman says:

Good gawd, did this chick just age 10 years? she looks like Ellen Barkin. now I know why my husband made a face when I showed him her pic in a magazine cover.

  21. Music says:

You know what? Why don’t Tom and Cameron be together? I mean they are the ones that seem to be the most suited for each other, yet it NEVER happened for them?

I mean Diaz has said she understands Tom better then anyone, and he seems to be the happiest (and not like fake happy with Katie) with her and they are interested in doing crazy things, and laughing all day and night. I think they would be together for however long, I don’t think either or meant for marriage so just let them be.

I don’t think Cruise is gay , I just believe he is so unhappy with Katie so he OVER compensates and thats why it looks fake and forced. He could have liked her in the beginning and then things spiraled out of control with him in the Scientology world, so he got married to someone, you KNOW he wants to divorce. With him and Cameron they could just stay single and do their thing.

I believe Diaz would be happy with him, and he would with her because she gets his brand of crazy sometimes, due to the fact she is JUST AS loony as him. Thats why she said they been friends through everything for 11 years. I think that is his soulmate if he ever had one and vice versa. They just can’t see it. Plus if they do it, especially since Tom is STARTING to get his likablity back to half/75 percent of the general public what would a divorce do than? Hell since people hate the KH thing so much it could only HELP his career.

As for lifts, RDJ rocks the best heels! LOL. I seen a pic of him doing the Iron Man 2 shoot and he was wearing at least 4 inch heels. Tom Cruise isn’t as short as some think because I seen him in person. He is clearly 5’6 or 5’7 but I NEVER knew that Downey jr was a midget also. Because in IRM2 he isn’t taller then anyone yet without “heels” he would shrink even more next to Paltrow. Thats why you never really see his feet. He is the SAME height as Ben Stiller who is 5’5.

  22. MooHoo says:

A male friend of mine in the Uk saw this ep of Top Gear and says to me ‘you know Tom Cruise, for all the gossip, seems like a really nice guy’. I saw him interviewed in Munich last week (he was also spotted in a local biergarten) and honestly, he does come across really well in interviews (except when doing crazy sofa stuff). Himself and Cam worked hard to promote this film both of them, good on them. The trailer did a number on my young daughter and she dashed out to see the film as soon as it opened and thought it was funny and great (12 year olds – not exactly perceptive critics but hey).

  23. CandyKay says:

Everyone I know who has met Tom Cruise, both personally and professionally, has said that he is, in fact, a really nice guy.

I also liked the trailer for “Knight and Day”, although as a single mom of a young child, I don’t get out to cinemas very much.

This film seems like an anomaly – an action film directed at a mature audience. Maybe they’re just not the kind of people who go out to a theater to see an action movie – I know I’m not.

It could be that this movie will be a bigger hit on DVD, download and pay-per-view than it ever was in theaters. I will probably download it whenever it becomes available.

  24. 88Modesty88 says:

Top Gear rocks. I’ve seen Jezza, Hamster and May in person here in South Africa when they come down for the MPH shows, which are also very very cool. You don’t have to be a petrolhead to be crazy about them!

And Tom is quite cool when he’s not spouting Scientocrap!

  25. Julia says:

I’m with Fae and Mairead – May is the (gentle)man – Go Captain Slow 😀

  26. fiyatı says:
