Drew Barrymore on Justin: ‘We never talk about when we’re together & we’re not’

Star Magazine has an interesting interview with Drew Barrymore promoting Going the Distance, which is out in the US starting today. They ask her directly if she’s with her costar Justin Long and she sort-of admits they’re on and off again but says she’ll never tell you when. I’m getting a “friends with benefits” vibe, which is what sometimes happens when you realize that the romantic part isn’t going to work out but you still have a good time together. Or hot breakup sex, it’s hard to tell. Here’s part of what Drew told Star:

What have you learned about how to make a relationship work?
Nothing! In all seriousness, I’m very excited to be in my 30s and not stand on my soapbox and brag about what I know. I’m not in on any brilliant secrets right now.

How can you make a long-distance relationship work?
I know what I would want to make one work, like letters and surprising each other – things that make you feel special, like you’re part of a unit and it’s not a phantom thing.

Where do things stand right now with you and Justin?
We never talk about when we’re together and when we’re not. It never, ever will be addressed. Mystery is sexy. But I definitely think it was a benefit that we knew each other so well. It’s very rare to have such an amazing chemistry with someone. That was such a blessing.

So all those kissing scenes were just part of the job?
I was just lucky he’s a good kisser! The worst is when you’re kissing somebody who’s not and you feel like you’re working on your own. Basically, it was a real team effort!

I’m thinking if it “never will be addressed” she’s ruling out a long term reconciliation, but you never know. She did talk about Justin all the damn time when she first got together with him. In terms of their “chemistry,” not everyone agrees that it translates on screen. I just read a review in US Weekly that trashes their chemistry. US observes “The costars – despite their real-life are-they-or-aren’t-they relationship – lack the crazy spark that’s needed in good romantic comedies.” The movie is getting mediocre reviews overall, with a 48% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Still, I hope it does ok for Drew. I like her and wish her the best. We need more celebrities like Drew who aren’t full of sh*t. I also want to mention that I love how she says that she’s not going to preach about relationships because she doesn’t know anything more than the rest of us.

In another recent interview, Drew tells Stylist Magazine that she hates being alone but she also has trouble long distances relationships like the one she portrays on screen. “The worst part of being single is being alone. But I don’t get the benefit of having any help because I’m in a relationship with a person I never see… so I think sometimes, I feel like I’m just in a weird purgatory. And I have definitely had my freak-outs about that.” It’s all so vague. Is Justin the guy she feels like she’s in a weird purgatory with or is she speaking about a past long distance relationship with him or some other guy? She says she’ll never tell – about Justin at least. We’ll see. This one likes to talk.

quirky + dorky… they are perfect together. I like them.

  2. Vee says:

I like both these two, they appear very real, unaffected by their stardom and fun. The movie looks like it will be bubble gum cute, not sure I’ll pay to see it, but would if friends in a group were going.

  3. eja102 says:

he’s so nerdy hot. he can do better than what’s her face.

  4. Katie says:

Yeah, they are totally fuck buddies. I think after they first broke up, it was amicable and they screw each other when neither one of them is screwing someone else. I’m kind of jealous actually. I need a Justin Long to keep around. That’s pretty awesome when you think about it.

  5. Cam says:

I like them both, I really hope they’re still together. And yeah, I’ll definitely pay to see this movie, just because Drew is on it, I’m that stupid.

  6. Cinderella says:

I don’t think they are together, but she never seems busted up over any of her failed relationships. At least not on the outside.

  7. The Truth Fairy says:

So they are friends with benefits it seems. Why not?

  8. gee_gee says:

I love Drew and I think she takes the same attitude toward relationships as Cameron Diaz.

On another note: I don’t like her two-toned hair. Brown or blonde, Drew. One or the other.

‘We never talk about when we’re together & we’re not’”

    That’s cause noone really cares.

  10. Lisa says:

    Hell, I’ll keep him..

  11. bored says:

    I love her hair..

I think they like each other and have fun, and don’t worry about anything beyond that. Considering how other female celebs around her age are constantly pestered about marriage and babies, she’s probably wise to not define anything to the media anyway.

I usually don’t like two tone hair, but hers doesn’t really bother me. Has kind of a beachy look.

Get your roots done Drew! I think you can afford it….

I just saw the movie today, and while parts of it were kind of cheesy, I really liked it. I laughed so hard in places I almost spit out my drink. I think the first 20 minutes had some poor dialogue and they definitely had scenes that were kind of “Hangover” guy-comedyesque. But Christina Applegate was great, and I felt like the chemistry–at least the caring–between the two was very real.

I hate paying $11 for movies, but I think this was worth it. I mean, it’s no classic but it’s a good ride.

It’s hard not to like a fun Drew Barrymore movie, which is to say any / all of her movies since like another actress (who shall not be named!), she pretty much plays herself / the same character over and over again.

  16. Dhavy says:

I love her movies, even the cheesy ones (I saw Whip it last week and I want to go into roller derby, LOL) they are airy and fun plus she never takes herself too serious and she overcame a lot.

I don’t care who she dates, it’s always someone corky like her anyway and as long as she’s not breaking marriages and stuff, it doesn’t matter.

I wish her dress here was short, it looks cute on the first pictures but not so much when seeing it full lenght

  17. Leah says:

She means it won’t be addressed to the media, not that she and Justin don’t know or talk between themselves…and yes, that other part was most likely in reference to a past relationships.

This is rocket science and it’s just a case of Drew Barrymore being inarticulate; which she is.

    ….Gwyneth Paltrow, take notice.
