Alec Baldwin considering running for office

Many an actor has made a failed – and generally embarrassing – attempt at a second career. The most notorious examples of this generally involve anyone putting out an album. But here and there you find a failed clothing line or a ridiculous attempt at dancing. But once in a while, an actor successfully crosses over the threshold into a successful second career. And for whatever reason, they seem to have the most luck in politics. Probably because their egos serve them well in the political arena. Alec Baldwin gave an interview to 20/20 which airs this Sunday night, and in it he says he’s considering running for public office.

Alec Baldwin says he’s ready to be Mr. Nice Guy – and he’s mulling a run for public office. The Massapequa, L.I., entertainer, eldest of the four Baldwin brothers turned actors, says in an interview airing Sunday that politics looks appealing now that he’s turned the corner on 50. “There’s other things I want to do,” besides acting, the left-leaning performer tells CBS’ “60 Minutes.” “There’s no age limit on running for office, to a degree.” It is “something I might do one day,” he said.

Discussing his public divorce from Kim Basinger and the custody battle that led to an angry voicemail to daughter Ireland Eliesse, calling her “a thoughtless little pig,” Baldwin said he is learning something about tact. “You can pretty much bet all you own that I would never leave another voicemail message for my daughter that wasn’t just like something out of a Rodgers and Hammerstein score,” said the “30 Rock” actor.

Over the years, Baldwin has done little to hide his brand of politics. He has called Dick Cheney a terrorist, then said the vice president wasn’t a terrorist but rather “a lying, thieving oil whore and murderer of the U.S. Constitution.”

[From the New York Daily News]

I came down pretty hard on Alec after the whole calling his daughter a pig fiasco. But that was before I ever watched 30 Rock. And now that I’ve seen it, I can say that I really am spineless enough to love Alec Baldwin no matter what the hell he does. He’s THAT good in it. Rarely do I admit I am wrong, but he can call any kid any name he wants, for all I care. And I’m pretty sure if I’d turn this quickly just because he’s a good actor, there’s a pretty decent chance I’d vote for him too. Sad.

I really hope that nobody takes this vile young daughter bully seriously! He is a disgrace and should stay out of the public eye!

  2. Hanna says:

This stupid windbag probably does think highly enough of himself to run for public office. What an absolute idiot. He needs to keep his piehole shut, and just stick to his day job.

  3. kk says:

Alec could of called his daughter a lot of worse things. Go for it Alec!!

  4. Audrey says:

He should stick with acting. Alec is no Ronald Regan.

  5. Sasha says:

If you can do better- you run for office Blondie and Hanna. I say, go for it Alex!!

  6. Ack! says:

No, no, no. Life without 30 Rock and Jack?

Is calling your daughter a “thoughtless little pig” better or worse than calling her a “fat cow”? No personal reason, just wondering.

  7. Blondie says:

Sasha, You are warped if you think he should run. And the reason why such incapable and moronic people are in power today is because of voters and supporters such as yourself who don’t have a clue about anything.

  8. snappyfish says:

Alec was great as Will’s boss on Will & Grace, he is fabulous as Jack on 30 Rock.

Kim Basinger has some serious problems, she used her daughter as a pawn during their divorce. She involved a young girl in her machinations to hurt an ex-husband. Calling a child a ‘little pig’ is awful, there is no denying this. None of us know what was going on, but one of the most thoughless things to do was to release such a message to the public.

I would hate for my father to have called me such a thing, but I would have been mortified that my mother released such a message to the public. Neither parent was concerned with this child’s feelings at the time.

We don’t live in their shoes…..oh and Alec is right about Dick Cheney.

  9. Anne says:

I ADORE Alec Balwin in 30 Rock, that whole show is perfect. And I’m not ashamed to say that I agree with Jaybird and snappyfish. Basinger shouldn’t have released that tape or did it come out in a court hearing? I don’t think he’s a great father and neither is she a great mother, that is beside the point, he is a great actor and all I’m asking from him is that he entertain me.

  10. headache says:

Basinger is batshit crazy, has been for years.

Okay so that’s a bit harsh but she does suffer from agoraphobia which causes her to have panic attacks in even the most mildest of stressful situations. I have no doubt that contributed very heavily to their horrid custody battle.

As for politics, have you heard some of his political opinions??? He makes some of the most liberals among us look like Pat Robertson.

  11. Sasha says:

Blondie- there’s running and then there’s winning. The one does not guarantee the other. Relax your sphincter, you’ll live longer. 😉

  12. blondie says:

Fair point Sasha, but I still am against him running…because who knows he may win

  13. monica says:

blondie…. i know what you mean. i never would have thought in a million years dubbya would be president, twice but there you go… this is what the american people wanted.
    i love alec though!

  14. Melania says:

Why not? He’s charismatic and obviously intelligent. Only thing is he should lose 80 pounds and then he’d look good too.

  15. mollination says:

Oh Jaybird, I love your honesty AND your retractions! You might as well run for vp, and then you guys can have my vote! haha!

  16. JudyK says:

You people are kidding right? Because he actually played a part in the movie you think he has a place in politics? Don’t we already ahve a bunch of assholes in there already? Maybe this is why we have such a screwed up Govt. because we have people that think this way. That is what we need a guy that insults his kid calls her names ,cannot control his mouth or his temper in politics. Where did our education system fail us??

  17. Enonymouse says:

Why is always Kim Basinger the bad guy in all this when Alec Baldwin is proven to be the crazy, abusive (it was know that he was physically abusive towards Kim Basinger) and manipulative person in this relationship. Also just because he is in a sitcom it seems that some people have so easily forgotten what kind of repulsive man he really is. I listened to his call and it was not just what he called his daughter that disgusted me, it was the way he said it that was in such a vile way which makes it so very unacceptable to talk to anyone especial your young child.

  18. leah says:

I agree with you Judy. We don’t need another asshole running our government. Especially one that can’t control his temper and is so arrogant to boot..

  19. wanda farian says:

I have a horrible feeling a lot of parents talk this way to their children. Good luck with healthy egos in that kind of family.

  20. Anastasia says:

I do have to agree–he’s AWESOME in 30 Rock. I can’t even get the husband to watch it, he hates Alec Baldwin that much–even though I keep insisting he rocks the house in that show (the whole show rocks, really).

But yeah, I’ve definitely been thawing toward La Baldwin lately. And if I am assuming correctly from his comments, he’d have a D after his name if he won office. Cool!

  21. breederina says:

He is agreat comic actor, remember Schweaty Balls? A classic! It’s true he is no Ronald Reagan & thank god, that idiot was a menace in every office he held.
He is also hopefully no Dubya.
If he wants to run for office, why not? I say go for it.

  22. breederina says:

p.s. Totally agree w/him re; Dick Cheney. That slime bag is evil incarnate.

  23. Randi says:

I agree with Enonymouse in regards to Basinger. People always talk as though she’s the bad guy in the divorce but he’s the one who makes all these public attacks.

  24. Syko says:

I’d vote for him. God knows he can’t be worse than what’s in office now.

The calling his daughter names – who hasn’t? For awhile my son thought his name was Michael Dammit. We all do things in anger that we shouldn’t do, say things we shouldn’t say. We’re human. He was angry at the girl because she was thwarting his plans to be with her – again. Apparently this is behavior that’s encouraged by the mother. Obviously he adores his little girl and would like to spend time with her, and when he can’t, he gets upset. I can’t blame him for it, I’ve been angry at my own kids and said things to them I shouldn’t have said. Thankfully my ex didn’t broadcast it to the world to humiliate me.

  25. headache says:

I guess if that voicemail was all you’d ever heard of the relationship, then you’d believe Kim’s claim.

I would suggest anyone who thinks everything is his fault research the divorce, the custody case, and most importantly agoraphobia.

  26. Valerie Kell says:

I just vomited a little in my mouth, but I would love to see this idiot go down in flames. Most of America wouldn’t elect him for dog catcher, but if he runs in good ol New York he’ll win in a landslide. They gave us Senator Clinton and now noone can make her go away!
