Tim Gunn was once suicidal, hates RHONJ & loves Jon Stewart

Don’t you wish that Tim Gunn was on a book tour all the time? I’ve been enjoying how many Tim Gunn stories there are lately, but it’s only because he’s promoting his new bitchy tell-all/style-guide/life-guide, Sluts Better Recognize Gunn’s Golden Rules: Life’s Little Lessons For Making It Work. It’s out NOW. Go out and buy it. I am. Anyway, it seems that a large part of Tim’s book and Tim’s book tour is taking bitches down. One of these bitches is Vogue’s Anna “Nuclear” Wintour. Yesterday we covered the progress made on the Wintour front – Tim basically telling the story about Wintour’s freakout when he publicly called her out, etc. Tim also went on The Daily Show last night (he and Jon Stewart are tight, Jon is a big Project Runway fan – for real – and I believe this is Tim’s third appearance on the show) and he discussed the Wintour situation in more detail, and was just fabulous, in general:

Tim has done additional press too. Here are more highlights:

Gunn on RHONJ: “Forgive me, New Jersey Housewives,” he says, “but there’s a trash element to them that’s abhorrent. The message they send is, ‘You want to be a TV star? Yell obscenities, act inappropriately, throw furniture, hit people and you’ll have great success.’ It’s appalling.”

Gunn on neckties: “The number of men who don’t know how to tie a necktie because they don’t own one,” says Gunn. “You must!” he adds, voice rising in frustration. “You need a dark suit, a white shirt and a necktie . . . It’s out of respect for people. Respect!”

Gunn is pretty sure he saw J. Edgar Hoover in drag: Gunn’s father, for instance, was an FBI agent and ghostwriter for J. Edgar Hoover. (Hoover was a secret cross-dresser, and Gunn is pretty sure he saw him in drag; his dad told him he was meeting the actress who played Ethel in “I Love Lucy.”).

Gunn was once suicidal: He has a fractious relationship with his mother, used to speak with a debilitating stutter, and hated school. At 17, he tried to commit suicide by swallowing pills and, plagued with depression, attempted several more times. He also considers himself asexual, is celibate and hasn’t had a boyfriend since 1982.

Gunn on libraries: “Call me a schoolmarm,” he says, “but few things make me angrier than people not taking good care of library materials.”

Gunn tells a funny story about Diane von Furtsenberg: One hilarious scene has him in a downscale diner with a famished Diane von Furstenberg, who announced: “Somebody, anyone, please bring me a hot dog!”

On Anna Wintour: a “sphinx without a riddle.”

On Martha & Alexis Stewart: Martha Stewart once flipped out when Gunn brought a Diet Coke into her studio — she had banned the caffeinated beverage, deeming it unhealthy. And Stewart’s daughter, Alexis, “strikes me as one of the angriest people I have ever met . . . There’s something incredibly ‘Grey Gardens’-y about [her and Martha],” he writes.

On Michael Kors: “a diplomat who takes the high road.”

Do I need to say anything else? Buy this book. For real.

    Sluts better recognize?
Gonna have me laughing ALL day.
If I could just here Tim Gunn say that *once* I would be the happiest gal ever.

  2. Lola says:

if kors is a diplomat who takes the high road then that says a hell of a lot about the rest of the industry – cause Queen Tangerine can bust out some rude ass stuff on PR. Delightfully so, i might add.

  3. Stronzilla says:

Now watch, Wintour’s camp will come out with a ghost-written book aptly entitled, “Anna get your Gunn”.

  4. mln says:

    he made my morning.

  5. GreenGinger says:

No Kaiser, you don’t need to say anything else–your argument was very convincing 🙂

But even though you’ve convinced me to get the book, can you still keep the Tim Gunn stories coming? I can’t seem to get enough.

  6. Lisa S. says:

    Love him!

“You need a dark suit, a white shirt and a necktie . . . It’s out of respect for people. Respect!”

    Awesome.

  13. JuiceinLA says:

I bought the book last night and tore through the first 50 pages. I can’t tell you the number of times I sighed and said “I love Tim Gunn”… The thing that is so wonderful is that he may dish about other people’s bad behavior, but its always with an explanation as to why this is relevant and important.

  14. Lady LaLa says:

    A spinx without a riddle…. You are
    badass, TG

  15. JuiceinLA says:

@lola! OH you are so spot on with the Kors comment! love it! I love Tim, I do, but we all know when Michael publishes his book it could easily be entitled “Sluts who dint reconizzze.”

  16. Rita says:

Tim and Jon- Honesty- Honest commentary and honest comedy.

  17. Shi-gatsu says:

So eloquent! I want to be him.

  18. GrnMtGirl says:

Tim Gunn is awesome!! The book is on my list.

  19. Bodhi says:

He was SO FREAKING AWESOME on the Daily Show last night!!

I love that he is a library nerd, le sigh, that makes me so happy! So happy, in fact, that I am going to add his book to my library queue right now!

  20. Hmmm says:

The man is certifiably adorable. I’ve never seen him, yet I love his candid quotes. This is the way to live life, with grace and a hacksaw.

  21. Jill says:

I don’t think Tim has ever said anything that I didn’t totally agree with. I love him. I will definitely buy his book!

P.S. Love the Martha/Alexa Stewart ‘Grey Gardens’ reference. So right on!

  22. TaylorB says:

I am still in love with him giving a back handed bitch slap to Gretchen, I like her but she needed a reality check or shall I say a Gunn Check in a big way.

  23. GMAFB says:

LOOOOOVE Tim Gunn, I hope Anna doesn’t put a hit on him.

  24. original kate says:

“few things make me angrier than people not taking good care of library materials.”

me too, tim! i manage a bookstore and i find it apppalling the way people treat books – put them on the floor, balance their starbucks cups on them, crack the spines…just horrible. also, when toddlers throw books on the floor and the parents don’t tell them “it’s not nice to throw things that aren’t yours” or whatever. they just leave them there to be walked on. ugh! so i’m going to get all tim gunn on them now.

    *rubs hands in gleeful anticipation*

  25. Alexa says:

I love him too. Really. And because Tim’s so cool, I don’t think he would mind me asking – “What the heck is he so famous for?” He got a B.A. in Sculpture. Then he got a job talking about fashion…why? What makes HIM such an expert on fashion?

It almost seems like he was hand picked to become Fashion’s first style expert character because of his universally “delightful” (flaming) personality.

I’m not saying this to be mean. I genuinely want to be enlightened!

  26. Linda says:

He’s actually kind of a fox.

  27. badmom says:

Schoolmarm, indeed. “library materials” made me squee. I Love My Library . . . but not as much as I Love Tim Gunn. No one on the planet uses language the way he does; perhaps that’s one of the reasons he’s famous. And beloved.

  28. betteboo says:

Tim Gunn is style with content. Love it. And I just noticed what a good laugh he has

  29. Mistral says:

    He is very cool!

  30. gee_gee says:

Dear Sweet Jesus I love this. I want the two of them to have a show together. Love Tim Gunn. Love that Jon Stewart watches it. It’s too much.

  31. Raven says:

Alexa, he’s a fashion expert because he worked at Parson’s design school(part of The New School)in NYC for 25 years, many of them as head of the fashion design dept. I’m surprised you didn’t hear the references to it on PR because he was still working at Parsons at the time. He’s now chief creative director at Liz Claiborne.

  32. fluff ass says:

    i LOVE him!
