Julia Roberts’ Parisian jewel tones: unflattering or lovely?

Julia Roberts’ European tour for Eat, Pray, Love continued this weekend as she left Rome for Paris promotional duties. These photos are from the Paris premiere… my opinion: much better. But I actually thought her Dolce & Gabbana black lace dress on Thursday’s Rome premiere was nice too. On her. I know a lot of you disagreed with me, and yes, it wasn’t the most flattering thing she could have worn, etc. But I thought Julia pulled it together reasonably well for someone who puts herself out there as a woman who doesn’t give a crap about fashion. Of course, maybe I was still in shock over her hideous muumuu, belt and leggings combo the previous day. Maybe I’m still in shock, because I really like this blue/purple outfit Julia wore to the Paris premiere.

It slims the lower half of her body very well. However, the sleeves and the wrap-v-neck top part of the dress gives her added bulk that she doesn’t need. And that belt isn’t the best either – Julia needs to stop with the belts. Someone needs to tell her to stop visually drawing attention to her waist. And I’m sure some of you will say that she still looks pregnant. Meh to that. But the hair looks great, as does the makeup, and this color looks wonderful on her. I LOVE jewel tones. Oh, you know why Julia’s makeup has been looking so good lately? Because she’s the spokeswoman for Lancome, and she’s on the verge of signing another contract with them, this time for five years, with something like $50 million in total. GAH. Anyway, my Javi was in Paris for the premiere too – and he and Julia were all over each other. Bitch. Her, not him. Get off of him!

  1. whatever says:

wow..my mother had a similar dress, back in circa 1975.

  2. a says:

i know it’s supposed to be loose fitting but it’s a mess, especially the top. yikes!

also, the sleeves are WAY to long, maybe it’s a nice dress that is a few sizes too big?

  3. fijifly says:

Love the color. Hate the style — not a “hot mess” just a mess. Absolutely unflattering.

  4. betteboo says:

her boobs look enormous in that second photo, has she had ‘work’?

  5. gloaming says:

She’s never had a small waist and this is the wrong dress for her. It makes her look too broad. The colour suits her and her hair’s gorgeous as usual. loving the shades too!

  6. geenie says:

She used to be ‘America’s sweetheart,’ but too bad for her, she got dethroned by Sandra.

  7. womanfromthenorth says:

Yeesh… so 80’s. When did her ass get so big? The last outfit we saw was a dud also. She needs to hire someone… soon

  8. Donna Wingfield says:

I can’t tell about the hemline from the photos, but it almost looks like the dress doesn’t hang right. I don’t think it’s flattering on her, but then I don’t think Julia’s attractive either.

  9. Eleonor says:

That bracelet on the dress. NO.
And what happened to her upper lip?

  10. Raven says:

She is a beautiful woman, but who the heck is dressing her these days? She has looked like hell for most of this tour. She needs to hire a stylist asap if she’s dressing herself and, if not, she should fire whoever is dressing her.

  11. Just a Poster says:

I’m telling you guys.. I am getting a very major preggers vibe from her.

  12. citysuede says:

funny how in every pic she is covering her belly in some way. even tho i don’t have a small belly now, i only did that when i was pg…

  13. Jenny says:

    she looks horrible!

  14. wunderkindt says:

    Hefty bag dress.
Julia just isnt very relevant compared to others who are much bigger stars-think Sandra Bullock!

  15. carrie says:

    hair? great
    make up? great
dress? unflattering because she looks fat and i know she’s not fat so is she pregnant?

  16. albeli says:

It’s too big, especially on top. But the color is fine.

I’m thinking baby bump camo, too, which would also explain the boobs.

  17. Super Sleuth says:

Beautiful color and fit is not bad if she is pregnant (which I think looking at how huge her boobs look may be a possiblity), but if it’s all because of just too many carbs in Italy, she needs a new stylist.

  18. lambchops says:

    she has to be pregnant.

  19. KatC says:

I think she looks wonderful in the first photo/ From other angles the dress works…less well to put it mildly. Then again, when you have a more ‘normal’ body, as Julia seems to, It’s hard to dress so that you look dazzling from every angle. It kind of sucks that she can’t be at a normal, healthy weight (especially for her age) without everyone assuming she *has* to be pregnant. She’s a little younger than my mom, and they have a similar body type. I think she looks good, just not exactly what we expect actresses weight wise.

  20. RHONYC says:

top pic looks good. lower hemline would be better. she is in her 40’s for f*cks sake! 🙁 nobody wants to see her damn knees.

  21. cat says:

I like the dress, javi wasn’t at the Paris premiere, the photos with her are at the San Sebastian Film Festival, she wore the same dress twice.

  22. Cam says:

Like the dress, but not on her… it just doesn’t fit right, makes her look like she just got out of bed and didnt know what to wear so she grabbed a belt and the bed sheet. Anyway, she’s got great legs and the make up is beautiful.

Definitely better than the black dress and the muumuu.

  23. Solveig says:

Mh, that dress would be good on someone skinnier and taller, on her it looks like a sack or a crumpled curtain.
    Love the colour, though.

  24. Cherry says:

Nthing pregnancy. The protective hands across the stomach, the boobs, these shapeless dresses…she’s either pregnant or wants us to think it’s so.

  25. supertrooper says:

    RE: RHONYC

Really? No one wants to see someone’s knees who is over 40? What? Are you 12?

As a 43 year old with fabulous legs, I sure as hell will NOT cover up my knees.

I really hate the ageism that is perpetual in our modern society. 40 is still very young in terms of life expectancy.

  26. Granger says:

I don’t get it. I just saw photos of her in a bikini in Hawaii, taken about a month ago, and she looks slim and toned. In these recent premiere pics, though, she looks positively chunky around the stomach and hips. I suppose it’s possible that she’s preggers, and that she’s just put on a lot of weight in the last month, but it seems awfully fast. Guess we’ll find out soon enough…

  27. original kate says:

julia is kind of rectangular shaped, which is fine, but she has never been able to dress well. she is just so boring, boring boring.

  28. gg says:

Julia REALLY needs to update her hairstyle. Time for a new do, hon.

  29. Crash2GO2 says:

@supertrooper: AMEN! Julia’s legs are fabulous and so are mine at 46 almost 47. No way would I cover them up. In fact I am planning on wearing a bikini to the beach this weekend (my abs are definitely one of my best features). Should I post a warning for all you sensitives who don’t think anyone over 20 should wear a bikini in public?

  30. dovesgate says:

Hmm. That dress looks like a long black sweater I just bought not too long ago, just a smidge longer. I really dont think my husband would appreciate it if I wore it as a dress though.

  31. Wresa says:

Is she preggo? The outfit is ok, but it seems like she is hiding something…

  32. jemshoes says:

    Jewel tones are beautiful!

If the gown was full-length, it would look better on her. Not loving the hair, though. It would look better styled UP somehow.

  33. chessie says:

    Fug. And a bad fit.

She’s just fugly all over, all the time.

  34. bizzy says:

color’s gorgeous on her. apart from that — it’s like she’s never actually met her own body.

also, she’s suffering from jennifer-aniston-same-hair-forever syndrome (angie, i’m looking at you, too). i’d love to take a scissors to everything below that first layer.
