‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ second trailer released: are you over it?

Did you know that Bill Nighy is in the last two Harry Potter films, The Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2? Yep. I was startled by it as well. Also, there seems to be quite a bit of Ralph Fiennes, doing his villainy best as Voldemort. Above is the second trailer for Part 1 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which comes out in November. Personally, I’ve never read the books or seen any of the movies (I know, I know), so I’m not even going to try to act like I know what’s going on. CB just told me she’s totally over it, which brings me to a question: has Potter exhaustion set in? Thoughts…

Actors who are in this film, beyond the three young leads of Daniel Radcliffe (love), Rupert Grint (dirt-lip) and Emma Watson (looking gorgeous): Jason Isaacs, Ralph, Billy Nighy, Helena Bonham-Carter, Michael Gambon, Tom Felton, Alan Rickman (love), John Hurt, Rhys Ifans, Ciaran Hinds (love him), Brendan Gleeson (love), Maggie Smith, Miranda Richardson, Jim Broadbent, Julie Walters and Imelda Staunton. Basically, every British actor. Basically.

Anyway, this is going to be huge. This will probably dominate all of November and beyond. Just FYI, I’m sure I don’t have to tell you if you have kids. It’s epic and intense. Happy hunting!

I was never in to it to be over it.

  2. LOVE ANGELINA says:

No!!! So not over it. I love Harry Potter. The movies more than the books. Although the last one I saw, Harry Potter and The Dark Prince, I didn’t like so much but this one seems like its gonna be good. I can’t wait.

  3. Kimmmm says:

I was obsessed but it’s definitely wise to let this run it’s course .

I’m over it after I see this movie .

  4. Samigirl says:

I’m a huge Harry Potter nerd. CAN’T FREAKING WAIT!

  5. Dorothy says:

    I. Can’t.Wait. I am already asking for babysitters!!! LOL It looks awesome!

  6. Snarf says:

I fell asleep in the theatre during the last movie.

Fans will big to differ, but each movie is basically the same. Blah blah blah Hogwarts/challenges/mystery, blah blah skirmishes with advesaries, blah, draw/defeat/victory/loss”.

    zzzzzzzzzz.

  7. AMS511 says:

    f-n love it!!!
theres no over it with harry potter.
    it is awesome. period.

  8. Tess says:

Rawlings kind of killed it for me when she said that Professor Dumbledore was gay.

I mean…why haul sex into a kids’s story that way?

    We’re reaching a point of over-saturation and I don’t think it’s good for kids.

  9. Gabby says:

I LOVE the Harry Potter books. I like the movies as well but I hate when they leave out important details or bigger stuff, even great battles, that occur in the books. So at the end of each movie, as entertaining as it always is, I just feel a little bit disapointed. I’ve read the last book, and I will watch these last 2 movies, out of curiosity alone, but I honestly hope that they don’t leave anything behind this time, cause if they don’t, the very last one will be EPIC!

  10. Amoosed says:

This trailer looks incredible, I was going from film site to film site trying to find the clearest (eg ad free) version. Can’t wait!

  11. Celebitchy says:

Snarf I left during the last HP movie! It was so boring. I think they really ruined this series by dragging it out too long. I will probably see the last two movies, though. They’re surely do a better job than they did for the last one – I hope, not that it matters as it will still make bank.

  12. Sophie says:

how could you ever possibly get over it?

WHY CAN’T IT BE NOVEMBER ALREADY?!?!?!?

  13. Melissa says:

Why can’t Emma Watson button up her sweater properly? The buttons aren’t aligned with the holes. Pet peeve!

  14. Statler says:

Been over it, wish it would go away. I stopped enjoying the books when she killed Sirius Black.

@Tess- I don’t know, maybe to provide gay teens with a role model? I’m just glad she didn’t pick Professor Lupin. (Did anyone else think those scenes with Lupin and Harry alone in the woods together in the third movie were a little too Lewis Carroll- if you know what I mean?)

  15. CT says:

Mmmm, Kaiser, you should put more Ralph Fiennes on Hot Guy Fridays. His eyes…ugh. Amazing.

  16. kiko says:

i will wait for the dvd releases so that i can fast forward to the interesting parts aka scenes with jason isaacs, alan rickman, ralph fiennes and surprisingly bill nighy…i already know what happens..i read the books+the movies look like crap with this bluish dark hue..

  17. Gabby says:

    The last movie sucked!!!

I felt they did no justice at all to the book. They made it long and boring, and the good parts, they actually left out!! NO Kreacher and Dobby!!!! NO story about the ring that hurt Dumbledore’s hand and NO Battle at the castle!

And instead of Dumbledore having Harry paralised and hidden, against his will (while Harry tried to break the spell and help), the movie just made him look dumb and powerless and weak, standing there watching what was happening to his teacher and doing absolutely nothing, for no reason at all.

  18. jeane says:

    @ Tess,

What does Dumbledore being gay have to do with sexualizing the story? It doesn’t change anything about the story, now that you know he’s gay do you suddenly see massive gay orgy scenes appearing in every book? If she had said that Dumbledore was straight, would that have sexualized the story?

When asked about Dumbledore’s love life, Rowling said that she always thought of Dumbledore as gay. Which makes perfect sense to me. Connecting this with sex and inapropriateness reeks of homophobia to me.

  19. Stephie says:

Jeez. I hate when some actor I don’t know offhand is mentioned and I have to google the name to see a photo (and go, “oh yea”) only to see there’s one already listed on the page! Argh! I need to learn to scroll first!

NOT over HP. Can’t wait to see the last two films. Wish they would just come out together and not prolong the agony. We KNOW how it ends now people, just show us the goods!

  20. Kayleigh says:

If it still gets people to read I can’t hate on it.

  21. jeane says:

    & gabby I totally agree.

I like the movies, but I don’t understand how anyone can follow them without having read the books and knowing all of the backstory, because the movies just skip over SO many important parts. It’s never even mentioned what actually happened to Neville’s parents, and they left out all the house elf story lines which turn out to be pretty important in the end. They trade all the important character/plotline stuff in for more action & making out scenes.
But in general I do like the look of the movies and I think they’re very well-casted.

  22. that buck toothed bunny says:

am i over it? are you insane? hell no! i agree though. i cannot imagine why people don’t read the books. the books are incredible.

  23. Captaine says:

lmao @ “being over” one of the best selling books in the history of the world and a franchise whose combined worldwide box office gross for the five Harry Potter films to date is in excess of $4.47 billion.

    Uhhh….I don’t think so Tim!

  24. eja102 says:

I could never be over harry potter. if only it were real and I was a wizard, I’d be such a good one. really.

  25. manda says:

LOVE Bill Nighy. LOVE HIM! Have wondered where he’s been lately, I guess the Nighy love has passed to some other british dude.

I will totally watch both these, but most likely wait til DVD.

And how can anyone like the movies better than the books? That’s just odd. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone ever say that about any book made into a movie.

  26. Delta Juliet says:

So NOT over it! I can not wait until November!

My husband hated the Half Blood Prince when we saw it at the theaters but he loves it now (we both love all of them…we watch them over and over LOL)

  27. Bodhi says:

HELL NO! I will NEVER be over Harry Potter & I don’t care if i am 28 😛

  28. Isa says:

No! I saw this last night and about wet my pants! I am so very excited!

This one looks better than the last. I love how the movies have gotten darker. The last one was anti-climatic–no fight scene at the end. I do kind of worry, a lot of stuff that should’ve been explained in the past movies never was. I hope they don’t try to cram it all in at once.

  29. si says:

no, i am not over it. are u crazy? i cannot wait!

  30. Iggles says:

    I’m over it!

Gabby, you’re spot on. The last movie ruined this franchise for me.

I LOVE the books. They are so AMAZING! Book 7 was perfection. The movie fcked up Half Blood Prince so bad, I have no interest in see them muck up the final part of the series.

They left out too many important things. I am pissed at all the things they cut in part 6. They took an amazing series and ran it into the ground.

  31. Lizzyxo says:

They ruined the 6th movie by changing it. Yes books and movies are different, but, the made the choice to completly change the ending of the 6th movie. It was suppose to be an epic battle seen, with death and a lot of other things. I almost walked out, and I am a huge fan of the franchise. And Rowling didn’t bring dumblerdors sexuality someone else did. A fan asked why we never met his wife, and she said, because he is gay, then went to the next question. His homosexuality wans’t ever about sex, it was about his love for his friend then rival. That is all.

  32. Tess says:

@ Statler and jeane, I’m just concerned about the degree to which the culture is becoming sexualized.

I think much of it is unneccesary and has more to do with adults than kids.

Speculation by the auther about Dumbledore’s sexuality is irrelevant…so why do it? The books and movies are aimed primarily at kids.

Let kids be kids. I think this is all part of a trend to sexualize kids way before they’re ready for it. And it’s really for the pleasure of adults not kids.

  33. Lucinda says:

I’m reading the books to my kids for the first time (for them) after having read the complete series myself. It is interesting to go back to the beginning when you know the end and see just how well written these books are. There is such continuity and balance. They really will become classics.

The movies are a different medium. They don’t have the level of excellence the books too but they are still very enjoyable. So no, I’m not over it yet. : )

  34. Statler says:

    @Tess-

To be fair, it’s not like she wrote it into the story; she was asked about it in an interview and responded. So I’m not really seeing the validity of your statements, I guess.

Now if you were upset about Dumbledore’s brother’s forbidden love for goats- which *was* written into the story- I might cede your point. (Actually somewhat surprised the LGBT community didn’t get upset about this; the implications are terribly insulting to them, if you want to get all over-analytical. Which I often do 🙂 )

  35. Julia says:

    Can’t wait. That is all.

  36. marie says:

@ Tess… actually I think Harry Potter isnt for kids anymore, its very dark.
And saying that Dumbeldore is gay doesnt sexualize it. Its just a fact about the characther.. nothing big or anything…

  37. Lisa S. says:

Hell no I’m not over it! Biggest Harry Potter nerd right here baby. And I would still hump Ralph Fiennes’s leg when he is in character as Lord Voldemort. hehe

  38. Whatever says:

Not over it at all. We loved all the books and movies and can’t wait to see this one too. Now, that twicrap on the other hand…

  39. Missfit says:

Ya, I like Harry Potter…and what??? Sorry, but I’m not like some people who are into movies with sex and nudity…not all people are like that, but too many are and THAT I am over. I am a big kid at heart and I’ve loved these books and movies since day one. I get soo excited watching the trailer, my adrenaline pumps, I watch it over and over again….okay, so I admit, I’m a HP junkie addict freak, I’m hooked! lmao I love something that I can do with my kids…then again I do lots of things with them…we are definitely seeing the movie this November on the midnight show and dressing up, that’s what! 😀

  40. original kate says:

i work in an independent bookstore and my area is childrens/young adult fiction. i recommend kids books all day long, and i can assure you the HP books are still going strong. so is the percy jackson series and everyone is waiting for the new “diary of a wimpy kid.” BTW, its november 9th, for those with kids. surprisingly, the classics like “secret garden” and “pippi lockstocking” are doing well. the twilight series is over – nobody asks for those anymore. there are some amazing children’s/YAF novels and series out now, which is great. my current fave is “the incorrigible children of ashton place” about a turn of the century nanny who is hired to look after some feral children who were found in the woods. i love it when kids come in and get all excited about reading – brings little tear of joy to my eye.

as for dumbledore being gay, i’ve never heard a kid or a parent even refer to it. but you have to remember that is revealed at the end of the series, not the first book, and the series is designed for kids to read as they grow older. an 8 year old is not going to jump right to “deathly hallows.”

  41. Tess says:

@ Statler and marie, you’ve read the books and I haven’t, so I’m unaware of the story about Dumbledore’s brother.

My general point tho, is about the culture and not specifically about HP.

But whether sex enters the HP saga through the device of Dumbledore’s brother’s perverse practices or conjecturing about Dumbledore’s sexuality, I just believe that it’s out of place. Adults should draw the line and protect their children from stuff they’re not ready to deal with.

  42. Harper says:

I am still so into it, and I think it looks awesome, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to see it based on the sheer number of snake shots. I HATE snakes.

  43. Eleonor says:

This movie seems AMAZING, much better than the Half blood prince (delusional) or the Order of the Phoenix, can’t wait!

  44. Tess says:

    @original kate

Thanks for the recommendations!!! Is the feral childrens book too advanced for a voracious 9 year-old reader? I was always fascinated with anything to do with feral kids and would love to give it to my granddaughter. By the way, she likes the Percy jackson series, which I think is a great intro to greek mythology.

  45. nnire says:

i held off reading these books as long as possible. i thought i was too cool to read them, but finally my favourite university English lit prof rightly called me out for being an egotistical tool about avoiding the books.

i read them, i love them, and even though the films can never do the books justice, i love them too! can’t wait until november. harry potter fever!

being gay, i am thrilled that Dumbledore turned out to be gay. it’s nice to feel included, as benign as the revelation truly is, and i look forward to reading the books to my future children.

  46. Lisa S. says:

I have to add.. as for Dumbledore being gay. I told my girls that his character is a homosexual when J.K. Rowling stated it in that interview. I teach my kids that there is nothing wrong with homosexuality. Acceptance is key.

  47. Eleonor says:

When the Dumbledore gay thing came out, I read somewhere J.K. Rowling saying something like “Yes he’s gay, so? It’s a novel!”. Great.

  48. original kate says:

@ tess: that book is targeted for upper middle readers, and it might be a bit too mature for a 9 year old. not in subject matter but in context. but i can make recommendations:

1)rick riordan has a new series called the “red pyramid” and it is about a boy & his sister whose parents are egyptologists. think “percy jackson” but with egyptian pharoahs and pyramids.
2)a new series by jacqueline west called “the book of elsewhere.” an 11 year old girl’s family moves into a creepy victorian mansion and she discovers she can step into another world through the paintings on the wall.
3)for a lighter read, maybe try “the popularity papers.” two nerdy best friends are entering 5th grade and want to be popular, so they decide to track the popular girls, wild kingdom style. the story is told through a journal the girls keep.

of course, you can always go with one of my fave kids books EVER: “harriet the spy,” by louise fitzhugh. classic.

  49. Bellatrix says:

    Dobby… Sob.

  50. jeane says:

    @ Tess,
My problem with your statement is that you immediately connect “gayness” to inapropriate sexualization. That is why your comment came across as very homophobic. If Rowling had said that Dumbledore always had a secret crush on Minerva McGonagall, would you have found it inapropriate? Or is it just gay people who are perverting our children?

Rowling never said anything about Dumbledore having sex with anyone. How does a character being gay sexualize the story, if there is no mention of sex at all?

  51. L says:

    HELL’S YAY! Harry potter!

And for people who say the movies are boring and formulaic-go read the books. SOOO much better. I just consider the films to be visual interpretations of the books. Don’t judge the series on them.

@Tess- I really don’t see the point of your arguement. She mentioned the character was gay in a adult interview. It’s never been mentioned in the books or the films. How is that over saturation? Because there’s a back story that’s not addressed? As Jeane said, would you feel the same way if it was a heterosexual relationship?

  52. KellyBrynn says:

@tess: so acknowledging that dumbledore is gay in the last book is MORE detrimental than the heterosexual tension and relationships throughout the entire “children’s” book? sexuality is in everyday life, even for kids!

sexuality is sexuality, it doesn’t become scandalous or dangerous to your kids until you tell them how to feel about it. if you don’t bat an eyelash at the heterosexual storylines in the book and then shield your kids from the ‘gay parts’, guess what they are going to deduct from that? “if mom doesn’t want us to read this part, it must be really bad”. kids will make up their own minds about the characters, and i doubt when your kids find out dumbledore is gay, they won’t think he’s any less of a great leader, mentor and/or BAD ASS.

and for all the haters, my 24 year old boyfriend just reread the entire series in about 3 weeks to prepare for this movie. people will never get enough of HP, it’s our generation’s star wars! live with it!

  53. TrixC says:

    @Jeane: totally agree

The fact is the books already contain ‘sexual’ content in the sense that they portray (straight) people falling in love, kissing etc. In that context, I don’t see how the author merely mentioning that a character might be gay is going to confuse anyone. To my mind the later books are not targeted at younger children anyway. @Tess are you seriously saying you’d let your kids read about people being tortured or dying but need to protect them from the idea that someone might be gay?

  54. Tess says:

    @ original kate

Thanks so much for the book recommendations.

I’ve gotta run to a meeting, but do want to acknowledge all the comments. I’ll read them more carefully later.

But my main point is not specifically about gay sexuality. It’s about the the amount of sexuality that young kids are increasingly exposed to. The HP thread accompanied by the question about whether we’re over HP just brought to mind one reason I’m not as taken with the francise as I once was.

@KellyBrynn, it’s very unfortunate that you link “haters” with people who voice legitimate concerns. Bad for dialogue.

@TrixC, I think it’s a good idea for parents to limit their kids’ exposure to violence, torture, and sex.

  55. Chris says:

As weird as this sounds I’ve always thought the movies were spoilt because they didn’t play up the Ron/Hermione romance enough and they didn’t play up the Ron/Harry relationship enough. Maybe it’s just me but those were two of the most important relationships in the books and they’ve not been given any justice whatsoever in the movies. I’ve seen nothing in the new movies to indicate otherwise therefore I don’t see this franchise going from strength to strength. It will continue to make what it has always made. It does make pretty fantastic bank but with their inability to really capture the story I don’t think they’ll see much increase in audience. Who knows though. We’ll see. Twilight opening numbers are pretty hard to beat and since Harry Potter is coming with the same old lame old, it seems unlikely that they’ll surpass it. Harry Potter fans will be so delighted if it does.

  56. MissCrys says:

I will NEVER be over Harry Potter. After seeing this trailer, I’m more excited than ever to see the movie! They included Dobby! And the decoy Harry’s scene looks like it’ll be very closely aligned to the book.

Though I’m usually disappointed (and sometimes outraged) by the changes and omissions made from the actual story, I still thoroughly enjoy watching the movies. I’ll be at the Times Square NYC premier at midnight with all the other Potter Heads…can’t wait!

  57. Lady D says:

To repeat: Can’t wait, can’t wait, CAN’T WAIT!
    Bellatrix, cosign.

  58. Paris says:

Harry Potter killed Twilight’s numbers last year. I can’t wait for this movie. The book was perfect until the epilogue. Blech. But I think it’s going to be great if it can come close to my imagination while reading the book. 🙂 The movies have never been as good as the books but I’m still psyched. I started reading those books when I was 11 or 12 and I’m 20 now. Pure awesomeness. And about the Ron/Hermione thing, I was always rooting for Harry/Hermione. Plus they have so much freaking chemistry in the movies it’s unreal. But the story was great enough not to make me ditch it over romantic pairings.

  59. Lia says:

The books started out as whimsical and fun, with a tiny bit of tension mixed in. Now, the story has become so dark and full of angst that it isn’t enjoyable to follow anymore. It would be like taking The Wizard of Oz and having, in “book seven”, Dorothy terrorizing scarecrows, seducing tin men and brutalizing lions. Meh. I’m over it.

  60. Shoe_Lover says:

    Harry Potter for LIFE!!!!!

I cant wait to have kids so that i can read these books to them

  61. wunderkindt says:

    Over it not!

Gandolf is tattooed on my ****

  62. velcrodots says:

I’m so not over it, I can’t wait!!!

  63. Hollz says:

Over the movies? Absolutely. Over the books? Never! I re-read them at least once a year (usually 2 or 3 times). Hell, I stood in line to get my copy of DH for 3 hours, and got it at 12:01, I’ll never be over them :D.
I will most definately go see the movies, mostly so I can bash them later. I’m PISSED that they are coming out in 3D, but what can ya do? 3D is the big thing this year 🙁

  64. Lady says:

Yes! I can’t wait but really what’s up with Voldermort’s beef with Harry? He’s a kid dude. Move on.

  65. Rose says:

I WILL NEVER GET OVER HARRY POTTER.

i am still heartbroken i am a muggle.

  66. Adrien says:

Ralph Fiennes is still Voldemorty in the last photo? And Bill Nigh (yay!).
Good lord, I was still in high school the first Harry Potter.

  67. Holly says:

No way, I’ll never be over Harry Potter but I am very over the movies. I had hoped that the movie could be great because there is a lot of action and most of it in disguise, so different actors would portray Harry and Hermione. But it looks like they don’t think the audience is smart enough to understand the concept of polyjuice (changing your body to look like another person) so we’re going to be stuck with the same awful acting. The movies consistently show that
Radcliff and Watson aren’t good enough actors for their roles, the writers and directors dumb everything down, and the main characters you know and love from the books bear no relation to their screen counterparts.

It gets more depressing with each film. Not to say the films are as awful as the Twilight ones, but they’re nowhere near as good as the books…

  68. Lyla says:

First of all–this is a celebrity gossip site, not really the best forum to debate about the Dumbledore being gay thing.
Secondly, I will never be over HP 🙂 Everytime ABC Family does one of their HP marathons–you better bet that I’m watching it. I’ve honestly never read one of the books (I’m horrible I know), but love the movies.

  69. Lynda says:

    Alan Rickman…….OMG!!!!!!!!

  70. rudy5 says:

Harry potter was the first book I ever enjoyed reading. since then I’ve read hundreds of books movies are kinda cheesy but I’ve seen them all. Love the books!!!!!

  71. Chris says:

I’ve never been interested enough to read a Potter book or watch a Potter movie and I think I’ll keep it that way.

  72. My2Cents says:

@ Rose: Me too! Im totally gutted!

  73. saywat says:

I can’t wait till Nov!!! I re-read the books once in a while as well. I agree with whoever said in previous post about starting from the beginning again and see how everything’s in balance and explain so much.

The movies definitely dont do justice to the book. My husband only watches the movie, and I’m still so intrigued by that and keep wondering how can he follow when they leave out so, so, so much from the books.

Recently I went to the universal studio to see the Wizarding World of Harry Potter because I couldn’t wait anymore. The ride inside Hogwarts was so much fun, and dark. I was like a little kid again :).
